- How are you?

Yeah, we do actually,

'cause carbs are really
important to me right now.

And then I think fries
should be in that diet.

- Nikki, leave her alone.

You really expect people
to eat kale and cabbage

for nine months.

- Of course not momma,
but at this rate,

she's literally gonna give
birth to a baby potato.

- So, it's looking
really nice in here.

You think y'all need some help?

- Ah ah, gone and
get out of here.

We got this.

- Yeah, I get dressed.

People will be arriving soon.

Mama, meat and cheese?

Where's the carrots,
the broccoli, asparagus?

- Babe, your sister over here,
about to catch these hands.

- [laughs] Yo just say the word,

- Besides all that
sweetened, salty,

whatever Is just a myth?

- It's not a myth, it's real.

- There's no science
to support it.

- Hey, Hey, that's debatable.

'Cause I don't want to hear it.

- So you talking trash

[laughing]

- You don't want

- I mean, of course, in
theory, what's wrong with boys?

- Nothing's wrong with boys.

Just feel like every woman

wants a mini version
of themselves.

girls are fun.

- [sighs] Girls are dangerous.

- What's that supposed to mean?

- Relaxes sister Souljah,
let me rephrase that

before we start arguing.

What I mean is the ready-to-die
mentality men inherit

when you have daughters,
it's dangerous.

There's no limits
to what I would do

to make sure my
daughter is protected.

That's scary.

- I think that feeling
comes with having children

in general, especially-

- Yeah.

[upbeat music]

- All right everyone, it
is time for the moment

we've all been waiting for.

Gather round. Come on, come on

Come on Chanel, come on mumy.

All right. So mommy
and daddy here

will be given a pen and
on the count of three,

they're gonna pop this balloon

and the color of the
confetti is going to tell us,

whether we're having
a girl or a boy.

- Hold on, before
we do the countdown,

God, thank you for the
blessings of new life.

We ask that you
protect this child,

as it continues to grow,
in it's mothers womb.

- [Chanel] You don't
wanna be a girl Dad ?

Well Girls are fun.

- [Malik] Girls are dangerous,

there's no limit
to what I would do

to make sure my daughter
is protected, that's scary.

The ready to die
mentality, men inherit

when they have daughters,
it's dangerous.

- [Announcer] Reports of
missing girls increase,

police and the press
are treating missing
black girl cases,

as runaways, disappearing
without a trace,

- [Mama June] The
most important thing

is that this child
be happy, healthy,

and surrounded by love.

We know that you are
worthy to be praised.

- [Malik] What's
wrong with boys?

[soft piano music].

[sirens wailing]

- [Chanel] I think
that feeling comes

with having children in general.

[soft piano music]

- Hi, I'm Nikia
Steven's screenwriter

of the newest AspireTV
short film, "Endangered."

I was inspired to
write endangered

after reading a book called,

"Between The World and
Me" by Ta-Nehisi Coats.

There's a quote in
the book that goes,

black people have
this kind of obsession

with your children because
when they come to us,

they come to us endangered.

And so after reading
that, I thought about it

and I was curious about what

that would look like on screen.

And so I started
to write a story,

around that idea of
being endangered,

when you arrive in this world.

The two main characters
are Malik and Chanel.

So Malik is more artsy,
he's a photographer,

he's very gentle,
he's laid back.

- Here's my baby.

- What about me.

- My baby and my queen.

- likes good music.

He's the person who's
always like the mediator.

- At this rate she's literally

gonna give birth
to a baby potato.

- It's looking you're
really nice in here.

You think y'all need some help ?

- You know, he's always
trying to calm things down.

So that's more of
his personality.

Chanel is more of a firecracker.

- You should be lucky I
care about you like that.

There's people out here,

that don't have
parents like that.

- She's literally
juxtaposed to Malik.

She's more demanding,
she's more upfront.

- Babe, your sister over here
about to catch these hands.

[malik laughing]

- Just say the word I'll
hold her down for you.

- And she's more opinionated,

so you're gonna always know

what she's thinking,
what she's feeling.

When Malik is kind of
very go with the flow.

I feel like opposites attract,

so their characters kind
of do well together,

in situations where
it might take Malik

to be like, relax Chanel.

And Chanel might be like,
speak up a little more.

So those characters are main
characters of "Endangered".

[upbeat music]

- My journey as a
screenwriter has been

a lot of me finding my own path.

There is no blueprint
to this industry,

When you're a filmmaker,

you have to figure out
what you want to do.

If you wanna start
doing indie films,

if you wanna focus
more so on shorts,

if you wanna do TV writing.

So you have to figure out

what your own path is gonna be.

And then tips I would give

to aspiring screenwriters,
would be to write.

I can't tell you how many times

I've met an aspiring
screenwriter,

who hasn't even
written anything.

So get out there,
go ahead and write,

put your ideas to paper,
get your stories out.

The more that you write,
the better you get at it.

So make sure you're writing.

When I was younger, I would
have told my younger self,

to not be afraid, to be
all parts of who you are.

And then in turn, I would
make sure to put that

into my characters to make
sure that they're multifaceted.

Like it's okay for
them to be smart

and also still wanna listen
to a certain type of music,

or it's okay to be multiple
things and to be very layered

and to be complex because
that is how human beings are,

so you want to reflect
it in your story.

So I think the sooner I
accept that in myself,

the sooner I was
able to reflect that

in my scripts and in my work.

So three things I wish

I would have known
about screenwriting.

I would say number one,

I wish I would have known what
screenwriting was early on.

I didn't really know the name

for screenwriting until
maybe the 10th grade.

I just knew that
I liked to write

and I knew that I liked movies,

but I didn't know
how to marry the two,

maybe someone who
is from California

or is closer to Hollywood,

can understand early on
what the business might be.

But I'm from Atlanta so I had
to kind of figure that out.

Another thing I wish I
would have known that

rewrites are a good way to go.

Starting off I would write my
first draft and be so excited.

And I was like, Oh
my God, I'm done.

I wouldn't do an edit, I
wouldn't do anything like that.

That would have
been very helpful

if I were to have a second,
a third and a fourth draft ,

just to hone in on the craft.

And the third thing I
wish I would have known

about screenwriting.

I wish I would have
given my script

to more people to get feedback.

Like I said I would
write my scripts

and I would be so
excited and be like,

all right I'm ready, who's
gonna be in this film?

So I had no feedback
and no edits,

it was just a first draft

of whatever came to
my mind initially.

So that's definitely something

I wish I would have known.

[upbeat music]
