All language subtitles for 9. Choosing a Report Layout

Over the next couple of lessons, we're going to focus on the design or the way that our pivot table

report looks.

And we're going to start out in this lesson talking about report layouts.

Now, before we do, I am going to modify my pivot table yet again.

Let's remove the month name and I'm just going to put year back again.

I quite like it organized like that.

Now, if I click on my pivot table and go up to the design ribbon, this time notice in the layout group,

I have a little report layout button.

If I click it, I get numerous different ways that I can display my pivot table reports.

So if I choose the top one show in compact form, that is the default for your report layout.

So that is exactly what we're looking at and have been looking at throughout this section.

And this compact view basically displays the country and the product directly underneath each other.

So this is more like a threaded layout, you would say.

Now let's take a look at how this looks in comparison to an outline view.

Well, now we have a completely different layout.

We have our country in one column.

We then have a grouping and another column and then the product in another column.

So this type of layout takes up a lot more space on your page.

Now what this is actually exposed is that the grouping that we added just has the generic name of product,

too.

So what I'm going to do is double click here and we're going to change this to range and enter.

So this is our second way that we can lay our data in outline view.

Let's take a look at the third way we can choose to display our report in tabular form.

So let's click this.

It's kind of similar to the previous view, but it looks more like a table.

We still have the range in one column and a product in another column.

But this has a tabular format instead.

Now, one thing to note here is obviously you can widen out your column so you can make adjustments

like this.

But note that if you do make any adjustments to the width of your columns when you start moving your

columns around, your pivot table is always going to resize your columns to exactly fit the contents.

So you might find that if you drag this column out and you have it really wide like that.

If I was to then move the year column somewhere else, it's going to collapse back up so that it's simply

just the width of the contents.

Now, if you have very specific widths that you want to keep in place, no matter how you move these

fields around again, this is a little setting that you can adjust.

So if we right click and going to pivot table options again, notice right at the bottom.

Here we have an option for auto fit column widths on update.

So if you've set your column width and you don't want those to change, you would select this option

just here.

So just be aware of that when you're designing your pots.

So those are the three main layouts that you have.

Compact form, outline form and tabular form the one that takes up the least space is definitely compact

form.

Now, notice that we have a couple of other options at the bottom.

And these are really applicable to outline, view and tabular form view.

For example, if I chose to repeat all item labels in tabular view, it's going to just repeat those

labels in every single row.

Now, to me, that is way too much, but I will say that depending on the data that you're using, sometimes

that can be really helpful.

Let's go back and let's just say, do not repeat item labels.

Another option you have here is to add blank rows into your pivot table.

So if you want to insert a blank line after each item just to add a little bit of separation, you can

definitely do that as well.

So let's say insert blank line.

You can see that now after the premium section, we have a blank line after luxury.

After standard, after the subtotal, so on and so forth, if you don't want that blank crew there,

you can remove it very simply.

So those all the layouts you have, I'm actually going to switch my back to show in compact form.
