of 1897 Jack London,

a young Socialist
from San Francisco,

with his friend Merritt Sloper
arrived in Skagway, Alaska,

the start of the
worst of all journeys,

the route to Dawson
City in Canada's

almost unknown Yukon Territory.

This was a moment when
the world had gone mad

with Klondike fever.

(bright piano music)

(foghorn blowing)

(passengers chattering)

(passengers chattering)

Someone said it looked
like the gate to Hell.

Can't be all that
bad if there's gold

on the other side. (chuckles)
