where does your sense of humor
came from?

- I was really bullied
when I was young,

and I thought, like, "How do
I make friends with people?"

And I saw somebody in my class
was, like, always cracking
jokes,

had so many friends,
and I'm like, "I want to be like
her."

- It's a survival thing.

- A lot of people use
humor as a shield.

If I can laugh
about a situation,

I have control over it.

I've always held on to humor
as, like, a life jacket.

You may be drowning,
but if you have a life jacket,

you are going to float.

- Laughing at something
is so necessary for healing.

My background
as a First Nations person,
right?

We have this concept
of laughter as medicine.

The issues we face
as Indigenous people are many.

There's so much trauma,
so much pain, so much hurt.

If it wasn't for a sense of
humor
as Indigenous people,

I don't think we'd be here
today.

- Are you support for your drag
in your community?

- It's mixed, obviously.

With, like, every community,
there's always people who are
queerphobic.

There's always people
who are very much in support.

I identify as a two-spirit
person.

I like to define it as being
both masculine and feminine

within one body.

Within Indigenous culture,
because of colonization,

there's toxic masculinity,
hatred of queer people.

We're fighting for these things,
these social movements

that Indigenous people had
pre-contact.
- Yep.

- We're trying to go back to
something
that was already here.

- The same thing is happening in
India.

We've had queer people in our
histories,
in our myths, in our religion.

And all of a sudden, with
colonialism,

it turned into like,
"Oh, this is a bad thing."

- Right.

- And now they've left,
but they've left that behind.

- It stays.
- Yeah, it stays.

- And it stings, which is what
hurts,

'cause at some point in time,
before we were colonized,

people were actually A-okay with
this.

- Not just okay...

On my mom's side,
we are Indigenous.

Listening to Chelazon talk about
her
Indigenous background and
culture,

I really wanted to talk about it
and open up.

But because I come across so
white,
