She doesn't have a name yet,

but this little dog...

Cat's a fire captain from Miami

who saves lives in disasters.

She's come all the way
to Michigan

in a blizzard to find
a new partner.

A small partner.

to look at three puppies.

Dutch Shepherd puppies.

learn to find someone buried

after a hurricane or a tornado.

You never
want it to happen.

You never want there
to be that incident

where you're needed that badly.

But the dogs,

they are truly amazing.

Oh, yeah.

That's why
we train so hard...

...for that one
possible moment.

The story of how
us dogs and you humans

started saving lives together

goes back hundreds of years.

Some think it began at sea.

This is Reef.

She's a descendant of some
of the very first dogs

to save lives.

With her partner Ferruccio,

she patrols the coast of Italy.

Reef is great.
She's an incredible dog.

She comes from a long line
of water rescue dogs.

In fact, her grandfather, Mas,

saved my daughter
from drowning.

Ever since then,
I've devoted my life

to working with Newfoundlands.

Reef's ancestors

helped fishermen for centuries,

hauling nets and carrying
messages from boat to boat.

But no one had any idea
how amazing they really were

until one of you humans
fell overboard.

And in that moment,

the superpower dog was born.

Reef is the ultimate lifeguard.

She has two coats,

a shaggy outer coat
that keeps her dry

and a soft inner one
that keeps her warm.

Underneath, she's pure muscle,

with a thick tail
that helps her steer.

Forget the doggy paddle.

With massive webbed paws,

she can tow
up to 50 times her weight

and swim for miles.

Today is just
a training exercise,

but Reef and Ferruccio
have saved many lives.

And they're inspiring
a new generation of heroes.

You're looking
at the latest recruits

of the Italian School
of Water Rescue Dogs.

And class is in session.

The graduates
of this school will go on

to guard Italy's lakes
and beaches,

and this pup just can't wait.

Halo is now four months older

and already doubled in size.

She's ready to start
superpower school of her own.

is Cat's training partner,
Frank.

And her favorite game
is the same as mine,

hide‐and‐seek.

She's learning
to speak up when it counts.

That bark is her alert,

her way of telling Cat
she found someone.

And she only gets her tug toy
when she gets it right.

This time,
Halo doesn't see or hear

where Frank is hiding.

She'll have to use
another sense to find him.

Halo's just learned

the most valuable
lesson of all,

to trust her nose.

And that brings us

to the best canine noses
in the world.

Well, maybe not
the most heroic entrance,

but we'll give them a chance
to finish their nap.

Tipper and Tony
are Bloodhound brothers

known as the super sniffers.

With their partners,
Aloise and Joseph,

they keep
the neighborhood safe.

And what a neighborhood it is.

A wildlife sanctuary in Kenya,

home to endangered species

like rhino and elephant.

Endangered because they're
under constant threat

from illegal hunters.

Thankfully the Bloodhound
patrol is on the case.

The team
is called in to investigate

an abandoned campsite,

where illegal hunters
have been hiding out.

We got this call

from one of the locals
in the community.

They had seen a group of
illegal hunters in the area

trying to kill elephants.

The villagers
rely on Tipper and Tony

because they have brought
so many criminals to justice.

Any time there's a crime,
they call us right away.

The bad guys are long gone,

but they've left
a valuable clue behind,

their smell.

And the smell from
that one boot print

is all Tipper needs.

When he puts his paw down,
it's his way of saying,

"I got it."

Don't take this personally,

but you're pretty smelly.

Every minute, you're shedding
millions of dead skin cells.

Add your breath and sweat,

and you've got an odor trail
Tipper can follow.

If you could see
what he smells,

it would be like
bringing the past to life.

Tipper sniffs the air

up to seven times a second,

and uses his ears,
the folds in his skin,

and even his drool to help push
the odor into his nostrils,

where the real
detective work happens.

With hundreds of millions
more scent receptors than you,

and a massive part of his brain
dedicated to smell,

he can track a suspect
for days.

Now it's Tony's turn
to take over the search.

And the local villagers know

the nose of a Bloodhound
never lies.

Now check this out.

Tony's alert isn't barking,
like Halo's.

He wags his tail
and lifts up his head,

which can only mean one thing,

"I found him."

Tipper and Tony
are saving the lives

of so many animals.

They're local heroes.

People say they have
magic powers.

That whenever
the dogs are around,

they feel safe and proud.

In the middle of Texas,

you'll find the world's
top school

for firefighters
and first responders.

It's called Disaster City.

For search and rescue dogs
like me,

this place is Disneyland.

Good girl, baby.

Halo is a year
and three months old now.

I would like her to be
more advanced at this stage,

but it's going well,
she's doing well.

Just the focus, I got to
start working on the focus.

All this training
that we're doing

is to be deployed
in a real disaster.

But in order to get there,
we have to pass this exam,

this certification exam,

and that'll happen
within about a year.

To pass her exam,

Halo will have to find people
buried in a pile of rubble,

like this one.

She'll need to master
all of her super‐senses.

We may not see
all the colors you do,

but our field of vision
is wider than yours.

And our ears can hear sounds
none of you can.

But this game of hide‐and‐seek
is all about smell.

Halo's got to ignore the odors
of the people she can see,

and focus only on one...

...the odor of the person
she can't see.

Good girl.

The next step is a tough one,

learning to resist temptation.

She's a famous surf champion
from California,

but her real superpower

is healing people.

Ricochet's partner Judy

had big plans for her
as a puppy.

That's a good dog.

She trained her to help

someone with a disability.

Good girl.

Ricki!

But there was just one problem.

Ricochet was
too distracted by birds.

Ricochet!

It was only when Judy saw her

balancing on a boogie board
that she understood

what Ricochet
really wanted to do.

She ended up helping
not just one person...

but many.

And what Ricochet
has done for me

is not only introduced me
to all these amazing people,

but, um, gave my son
the confidence to surf.

‐Surf, surf.
‐Surf, surf. Exactly.

Surf, surf.

Logan has what's called
sensory processing disorder.

When Logan is faced
with something

that he is afraid of,

he shuts down.

So when he looks
at those waves,

and he feels he can't do it,

Ricochet is able to ground him.

She calms him.

This is Griff.

He's a Marine.

Until recently,
his experiences in war

made him afraid to be around
other people.

‐All right. That better?
‐Mm‐hmm.

But today, he's helping Logan

overcome his fears.

...hands together like this,
try to stay warm. Go...

All because Ricochet

turned his life around.

When I first started
doing the work with Ricochet,

she had already picked up on

what was going on,
um, internally,

uh, what I was
struggling with.

Um, no matter how good I was

at, uh, hiding it,

Ricochet, she can see
right into your soul.

Come on. Come on, Ricki,
this way.

Sometimes we'll be walking,

and if something triggers
my anxiety,

she'll, uh, alert me
by planting.

She'll put all fours down

and refuse to move
in any one direction.

Ricochet
can sense Griff's fear.

Especially when crowds
or sudden noises

trigger his memories of war.

(HELICOPTER WHIRRING

Planting on all fours
is her way of telling Griff

to listen to his emotions.

It's her way of protecting him.

The gift that I received
from Ricochet

from the work that
we've done together was, uh,

reconnecting, um,
to loved ones,

reconnecting to life,
to experiences.

When she's looking at me
like that

and you have
those moments, um,

it's one of the few times
where I don't feel so alone.

It helps me see
just how far I've come.

Hold on tight.

Ricochet bridged this gap

between this man
that is torn up inside

and my son,

and make them both
feel empowered.

And I don't think
there's anybody in this world

that can do that
except for Ricochet.

She is his hero.

New York,
where so many dogs came to help

after the terrorist attacks
of 9/11.

Nearby is the training site
of New York Task Force 1,

where Halo will take
her certification exam.

If she passes,

she and Cat will be an official
search and rescue team.

This is huge.

We've been working
towards this goal

for two and a half years,
you know?

It's intense.

One minute until search.

She doesn't
know why today is different.

She probably sees
that I'm a little stressed,

but in her mind, you know,
it's just another day of fun.

of doing what we do.

up to six people hidden
somewhere in the rubble.

If she gets it wrong,

if she barks
at food or clothes,

she and Cat fail.
