This must have been
very difficult to determine,

even for Leif Spånbo, the interrogator.

I think that's a myth actually.
There's this fake science

that says you can tell if someone
is lying by their eye movements,

but that's just rubbish.

If you talk to real experts,
they'll tell you

that it's not possible to see
if a person is lying. It's that simple.

And this doesn't apply to me alone.
This is the case in general I think.

So, it's not easy thing to do
of course.

But I don't think that I stand out
in that respect. That's just how it is.

The world would be so simple

if we could see
when someone was lying.

In Knutby.

Shock and despair spread throughout
the little town of Knutby.

The murder of the 23-year-old woman

and the attempted murder
of her neighbor

is in stark contrast
to this quiet, peaceful community.

This is one of the most bizarre criminal
cases in Sweden in modern time.

A web of religion, sex
and cruel, callous murder

unprecedented
in the judicial history of Sweden.

Who was the driving force behind this?

It's an important piece of evidence
that's been manipulated.

It creates doubt among the public.

Is this actually what happened?

This is a difficult time,
but we believe in God.

We're here for one another.
We're not giving up.

EPISODE 4: HAND OF GOD

HELENE FOSSMO
HELGE'S FIRST WIFE, DIED 1999

The pastor risks a life sentence.

He says he's innocent
of both the shootings in Knutby

and the death of his first wife
four years ago,

which police
have now classified as murder.

So you and Heléne came
to Knutby in 1997?

Yes, that's right.

I would like you to describe
your relationship in the autumn of 1999.

We... had a good marriage.

The problem was, before Knutby,
I worked an awful lot,

which meant that she did everything,

looking after the children and the home.

On December 18, 1999,

Helge Fossmo's first wife Heléne
is found dead in the bathtub.

Her death is not suspicious
so they don't investigate it.

Yet, a few days later,
they go over there.

There's a hole in her forehead.

They want to see if the faucet
matches the hole in her temple.

They can see that everything
has been cleaned.

There is no crime scene left.

It's too late to start an investigation.

Then a preliminary forensic opinion
was obtained.

This reveals toxic levels of
dextropropoxyphene in Heléne's body.

-Dextropropoxyphene is a...
-Morphine like.

Precisely,
a strong morphine-like substance.

This would explain why she fell,

but they don't think
there's sufficient reason,

so on January 14, 2000,
they decide to close the investigation

on the grounds
that no crime was committed.

Then in 2004 they look at it again.
When the forensics team arrives there,

they recognize the house.
They'd been there before.

The same pastor, the same house,
wife number two is dead.

Precisely.

When we were going to move to Knutby,

they promised us everything
under the sun.

"The family was important," and so on.

It promised to be
a totally different life

and we really looked forward to it.

It was like that to begin with,
but then...

More and more of my time
was taken up...

with Åsa and I was constantly torn.

Her wrath was best avoided.

Since Heléne expressed
her concerns about this,

Åsa felt she was jealous of her,

that she didn't understand what
God was doing. So that's why...

Åsa was dissatisfied with Heléne.
She felt she didn't deserve me,

since she failed to understand
the importance of my role by her side.

Heléne did everything in her power
to understand that. She...

She did her best not to complain.

When she demanded
what was her right as my wife,

Åsa turned against Heléne.

Why was she an enemy?

Because she questioned the fact

that Helge and Åsa
spent so much time together.

She was sensible and spoke her mind.
She got in the way

of God's plan for Helge
and Åsa's relationship.

Åsa brought up the subject
with the rest of us,

"It's not good if Heléne is jealous
of me and Helge.

Helge and I must spend a lot of time
on God's plan for us."

Heléne finds this difficult.
"Pray for Heléne not to be jealous.

This is not okay.
It will hinder our quest."

There's nothing worse than hearing

that you're hindering God's plan.
It's the worst thing you can do.

Now that we know what this meant,
the whole thing was totally bizarre.

-Meant?
-They had a sexual relationship.

That's what it meant for them.

Her authority was built upon
her unique election.

She was chosen specifically by God.

She was Jesus's darling, so to speak,

his woman, his beloved, his bride.

But since Jesus isn't here in person,

that love should be conveyed
through a channel.

And that channel was me
for a long time.

She could suddenly say,
"Speak to me from Jesus now."

If I didn't have anything to say
she'd get really angry,

as if Jesus
didn't have anything to say.

So I had to choose captivating
and encouraging words and...

This went from one thing to another.

At first she wanted me
to do stuff with her hair

or massage her face, her feet
and this led eventually to...

satisfying her sexually with my hands.

But then she started talking about
consummating this union.

It always started that way,
"I've had these thoughts."

By degrees
those thoughts became truths.

She began to think, despite everything,
that this was right.

Because I had declared
from the start that...

I'm not going to have sex with you

because then I'll be one with you,
and I can't do that.

For example,

if I said that I wanted to go home
or that I didn't want to come

she sometimes reacted very strongly.
And then...

Åsa usually blamed Heléne, saying
that she was making improper demands.

After a while, she began saying

that she wasn't so sure that God
would allow this, but rather...

In that case, remove Heléne because...

Åsa was so important.

Nothing else should come before that,
but she...

blamed Heléne.

She was the one, in Åsa's eyes,
who was the problem.

If Heléne didn't change her ways,
she would hinder God's will.

God won't allow anything to hinder
His will. He'd sooner remove it.

Åsa chose you to help her
in this regard.

Her demands meant that you were
torn between her and your family.

But you chose the congregation.
Is that right?

Yes.

She wanted Heléne to die.
That's my conclusion.

CRIME SCENE RECONSTRUCTION:
HELÉNE FOSSMO

In conjunction with the investigation
into Alexandra's death in January 2004,

Public Prosecutor, Elin Blank,

has decided to reopen the investigation
into Heléne Fossmo's death.

We can see here the faucet

that we think caused
the injury to Heléne's head.

If we assume that she falls,
could she get her injury in this way?

The arrow on the faucet corresponds
with the appearance of the injury.

-Can a person fall in that way?
-No. You would fall like this.

Looking at this reconstruction
in the bathtub,

it's really difficult to figure out how
it happened that she fell like that.

It's impossible to fall like that.

It's not possible to fall
straight into the faucet like that,

fall down, hit the faucet

and land in the bathtub.
It's not possible.

I think it's unbelievably stupid
to believe anything other than

that it is impossible to fall
in that way.

At the trial, professor of orthopedics,
Olle Nilsson,

was one
of the prosecution's leading experts.

One can sustain
a skull fracture in a fall,

but not this type of skull fracture.

I don't agree with his conclusion

and neither do the two forensic
scientists who investigated this.

The coroner who carried out the autopsy
on the pastor's first wife in 1999

and who was called to testify
for the defense, was confident.

The appearance of the injury is
no different from what we usually see

when similar witnessed
fall injuries occur.

BLOOD CONCENTRATION LEVEL
OF 2 MICROGRAMS

LIFE-THREATENINGLY TOXIC DOSE

Why did Heléne have a concentration
of Dextropropoxyphene in her blood

that equaled a lethal dose?

The autopsy shows that she had
dextropropoxyphene in her blood.

-Yes.
-This is an ingredient of Dexofan

which you were prescribed.

Mr. Ahlner, consultant and professor,
says Heléne had ingested

between five and ten tablets,
one to five hours prior to her death.

She was with you during this time.

So I'm asking you, how did the tablets
get into her system?'

Since it's a question
of that amount, I don't know.

-She was poisoned.
-Yes.

How was Heléne?

You just said she was the same as usual
at one o'clock. That can't be right.

I did say that, but she was sick.
I can't remember if we talked.

She was sick. She was weak.
She was nauseous and feverish.

But that description
doesn't fit the autopsy report.

She was poisoned.

Well, I don't know.

I don't know the answer
to that question.

Dextropropoxyphene
is a narcotic substance.

It depends on the level.
If we're talking 2 mg,

then that's a lethal concentration.
It could certainly result in a coma.

So you're saying she wouldn't be able
to get from the bed to the bathroom?

I can't see how she could,
considering the high concentration.

You're very clear on this,
compared to what was said in court.

They argued about this in court.
Some said she died in a fall.

Others said she did not and so on.

How come you're so clear on this,
compared to what was said in 2004?

Dextropropoxyphene
is subject to controversy.

It can no longer be prescribed.
It's not a licensed drug,

since it's so dangerous,
but that wasn't known then.

When you listen
to what this expert says,

you realize this person isn't just sick,
they're practically unconscious.

Yes. I don't know when she took them.

She didn't ingest it orally. There were
no traces of it in her stomach.

What does it mean
if she didn't ingest it orally?

Either vaginally or anally.

All marks, such as needle marks,
have been identified.

Based on the time it takes
for the body to process the drug,

it would need to be taken within
two hours, let's say mid-morning.

Yes. I don't know.

When you examine the circumstances,
I suspect that Helge

administered this poison vaginally...

to Heléne.

When she passes out,
he takes her into the bathroom

and lays her in the bathtub.

He unscrews the faucet
and hits her on the temple with it.

I don't believe that she fell.

This is a great source of sadness
for me and for our children and...

I have said to Leif Spånbo,

"If you're so convinced
that Heléne was murdered,

then it's your damn duty
as a police officer to investigate it.

But investigating it isn't the same

as asking me time and time again
if I did it.

Look further into it instead."

You can't investigate something
by looking through a straw.

You have to broaden your view.

Åsa Waldau said
that the pastor deceived her,

his wives and the whole congregation.

She describes how the pastor said he had
dreamt that both of his wives would die.

But she admits
that she gave her approval

when he falsified
Heléne Fossmo's autopsy report.

He looked at me and I asked,
"What's that at the end of the form?"

Something about tablets. He said,
"They found tablets in her stomach."

Did she kill herself? I asked.
I wondered what this was.

He said, "They didn't find very much,

but I don't want
Heléne's parents to see this,

in case they think
that she killed herself."

So I thought it would be unfortunate
if they had to deal with that as well.

And there was that autopsy report
you Tipp-Exed over. Why did you do that?

Because when Åsa saw this she said,

"Heléne's mother has
a medical education. She's a nurse."

She said, "If she sees this toxic dose
of dextropropoxyphene...

she might think
that Heléne killed herself.

That would not look good for me."

For Åsa and the congregation, that is.
"Erase it."

Åsa says the opposite in her book.

Åsa's book is the greatest collection

of unadulterated lies
ever published in recent times.

And I, well...

Altering the autopsy report
was a despicable thing to do,

but... I did it
and that's the reason why I did it.

And I've regretted that terribly.

You're both very strong personalities,
but who is the strongest?

Me, but I wasn't evil.

The funeral was a burial.

The Knutby congregation organized
the whole thing. We were left out of it.

They could have asked us about psalms,
or hymns, but they never did.

They were in charge.

I suspect
that Åsa was behind that too.

Yes.

Were you and Helge specially chosen
to intercede for Åsa,

or was the whole congregation involved?

I think at that time,

Helge and I were specially chosen.

Chosen by whom?

I don't really know.

We were masters at lying,
but we didn't think we were lying.

We thought we were protecting a secret.

BRIDE OF CHRIST

It doesn't matter how much I deny it,
I'm married to her.

She's not the Bride of Christ.
She's my wife and I love her.

Yet they'll still write, "The one who
calls herself the Bride of Christ."

MY WIFE IS NOT THE BRIDE OF CHRIST

It was a strategy. All I can say is,
as much as it pains me,

once more, here, I lied.

THE BRIDE OF CHRIST'S
SECRET INTIMATE ACT

WITH JESUS IN THE KNUTBY CHAPEL

-Did you become betrothed to Christ?
-No.

I promised God a deeper fidelity.

But a week later I was preaching
that the congregation was the Bride.

I wasn't thinking along
those lines then. For me, this was...

So what we read in the papers,
that on March 29, 1999,

together with Helge Fossmo
you went secretly to the chapel.

You put a seven-stone diamond ring
on your finger

and became betrothed to Jesus.

That never happened.

Despite all the attention
that she has been exposed to,

Åsa Waldau appears relaxed in court.

She smiles occasionally and glances
at Sara and the congregation.

She says she was very upset
that Sara Svensson

had a relationship with Helge Fossmo,

but denies that the congregation
turned their backs on her.

After the hearing,
she reached out her hand to Sara

and they clasped hands tightly
for a few moments.

-"Sara is given mercy."
-Yes.

"Yesterday she was given mercy
by the Bride of Christ.

After the hearing
Åsa Waldau defied the court's rules

and reached for Sara's hand, the same
hand that killed her little sister."

You can see the symbolism
in Åsa's role here.

For Sara, it's like reaching
for God's hand and receiving it.

She is the Bride of Christ.

She's the closest you can come
to God on this earth.

There's something legal
going on here. That's one thing,

but there's something theological
going on too, within the congregation.

I wonder how many members
of the court realize this.

No one's talking about the Bride
of Christ. They must protect her.

Her role isn't mentioned.
It's obvious they're toning it down.

"She hasn't arranged marriages.

We don't believe she's going home,"
and so on.

They're cutting themselves off.

These are the mechanisms
that are triggered.

CLOSING ARGUMENTS FROM
THE PROSECUTION AND DEFENSE

As regards the charges against Sara,
the question the court must ask

is not if she committed these crimes,
but why she committed them.

Helge Fossmo is an ordinary man,
with no previous convictions.

She carried out the crimes
on the instruction of a person

who had a motive, that both Alexandra
and Daniel had to die.

He has already been convicted
by public opinion.

Obsessed with his power
in the congregation.

Obsessed with conquering women.

Can one convince someone to shoot
two people that they love?

Obsessed with his incredible ability
to manipulate and deceive people.

Helge Fossmo requests
that he be released.

Helge will be convicted for instigating
the murder and the attempted murder

of Alexandra,
Daniel and his wife Heléne.

In Sweden we have a tradition where,
after a conviction is made,

then that's the truth.

Unfortunately, convictions
aren't always based on the truth.

The prosecutor already made that
very clear before the trial.

EVIDENCE IS MORE IMPORTANT
THAN TRUTH.

She said,
"I'm not interested in the truth."

It's a pity that the judicial system
doesn't strive to achieve that end.

And I understand that it isn't
always easy to get to the truth,

but it should be the objective.

Saying you're not interested in it
is offensive.

Helge Fossmo was given
a life sentence today

for instigating the murder
and attempted murder of his second wife

and attempted murder
of his neighbor.

The trial was one of the most
sensational in Swedish criminal history.

This was apparent today when
the judgment was announced.

The court found that he ruthlessly
took advantage of her love for him

and her dependency on him
as a religious leader.

His intent was for the victims to die.

Sara Svensson was sentenced
to forensic psychiatric care.

The court could not establish that
Fossmo had murdered his first wife.

While there were a number of
aggravating circumstances for Fossmo,

it was still not possible to rule out

that Heléne died
from a fall in the bathtub.

I'm satisfied that I secured
convictions for both of them.

I'm a little disappointed
in the outcome,

concerning the incident in 1999.

I'm disappointed
in the outcome, obviously,

since my client was convicted
on three charges, despite his denial.

Uppsala District Court
does not consider

that the nanny's serious psychiatric
disorder compromises her credibility.

I do think that the judgement
is lacking here,

especially since there was
no in-depth psychiatric analysis

of a person
with a serious psychiatric disorder

given the role
that she had in the District Court.

Is she credible, since this is
a sick person we're talking about?

Furthermore, we know that
when the nanny was questioned,

she read from her notes
most of the time.

The District Court fails
to mention this in the verdict.

What's interesting in the judgment
I think has to do

with the murder and attempted
murder of Alexandra and Daniel.

Sara is able to in detail recount
the text messages

that were restored
just before the trial.

She lies to protect Helge

and she holds back
on important information

about how she went about
buying that gun.

No one asks her about
the footprints in the snow.

No one asks her if she got a lift.

There's a certain kind of atmosphere
surrounding this trial

when you listen to it, as if she has
all the answers.

But Daniel Linde is the only witness
who has seen the perpetrator.

When he's shot and calls 112,
the first thing he says is,

"It was a masked man."
That's the first piece of information.

But in court, he says,
"I could never say that it was a man."

It would be interesting to know
what they asked him about that.

It's quite remarkable.
He changes his story.

I'm standing right inside
the bedroom door.

I've opened it, but I don't move.
I stand there.

Where's the person on the other side?
We know that Sara confessed to this.

If this was an American movie,
someone would yell objection!

A more reasonable question would be,
what do you see at the door?

-An open and simple question.
-He isn't given the chance.

The process has to move along.
Sara did this. We know that.

That's not what we're here
to investigate. We know the truth.

The most serious aspect of
this judgment and the whole trial is

that Sara cannot describe
how the murder was carried out.

You mean the three shots
fired at Alexandra?

Shots two and three to the head
are close contact.

Here.

Sara says that she stood at the foot of
the bed when she fired the second shot

and moved a little closer
for the third shot.

It wasn't close contact.

You would expect this
to generate questions.

Why doesn't this correspond
with your confession?

But instead, it's mentioned
in the prosecutor's closing argument,

"That's a detail that does not
diminish Sara's credibility."

There's a politeness about it,
a clarification.

They go along with Sara's story.

She's a murderer
who's being treated like a victim.

Well, maybe that's the case.

And then I walk slowly towards
the utility room door.

I stop here.

I listen for any sounds

and I continue walking slowly.

It's so frustrating
that no one asked these questions.

That we're sitting here today...

irritated because no one has
examined this adequately.

The one person who may have
the answers to these questions,

if this is exactly the way
it happened, is Sara.

I'm extremely eager
to ask her these questions.

She hasn't spoken about this
since the trial. 15 years ago?

Yes, it's over 15 years and she has
declined interviews ever since.

After the murder, we had a time
when everything was easier.

People keep coming,
but what can we do?

I think that people are strange.

Åsa and us, we try to portray ourselves
in a favorable light.

She's known to many
as the Bride of Christ.

People get married, educate themselves,
go on holiday. We live life.

There was even a baby boom
in the middle of this.

if a real sect came to Sweden,

considering the enormous media...

This says a lot about
the kind of person Åsa is,

a positive, visionary,

We were, in a way, superior.

We had been keeping a secret
that was now international news.

The Queen of Heaven
was among us here on earth.

This was spectacular, obviously.

I don't know that much about you.

You're a lovely lady. You're very pretty
and I love your outfit.

-Thank you.

It would take a lifetime to explain.

But then it started to fall apart again.

Åsa didn't get the results she expected
from all the media attention.

The dreams, visions, thoughts...

The prophecies relating
to the Bride of Christ disappear.

She feels that the congregation
is not respecting her enough.

Somewhere along the way,

she became extremely disappointed
in the congregation.

She felt they didn't stand up for her.
They didn't respect her as they should.

They didn't praise,
or elevate her enough.

This triggered a degree of stress,
"We must protect her.

We must do everything we can.
Can we do more?"

-What do you mean?
-Eventually, she didn't want to see us.

She was so angry with them.
She was seething.

That's around the time it started.

She was disappointed
in the Swedish people,

the Pentecostal Movement,
the Free Church

and she was increasingly disappointed
in the Knutby congregation.

This is when
Åsa starts to isolate herself.

This was all about her getting
to where she wanted to go.

Åsa was going to be with Jesus.
This was top priority.

It was a constant prayer,
from her too,

even though she would find it so hard
to leave, especially her children.

But there was a period
when we prayed every evening.

We were waiting for God
to do something.

My main role was, not as a pastor,
I was just there for Åsa.

It was my job, along with several
other women, to support her.

So my life consisted
of spending all my time with her.

She was up late at night
so slept late into the day.

We were there before she woke up

and made sure the house was clean
and tidy and the coffee was made.

-How many of you were there?
-Three, perhaps.

I spent all my time, when I wasn't
working or sleeping, with Åsa.

For me, it was a matter
of life and death.

We provided for all her needs.
We left her clothes out.

We had hot towels for her
when she got out of the shower.

-Hot towels?
-We heated them in the tumble dryer.

More people came around during the day,
even men. We all gathered there.

We had to bring her presents,
some she accepted, some she didn't.

We had to bring her presents
and flowers.

She wanted to be celebrated.

Jewelry, loads of jewelry,
flowers, roses, furniture,

kitchen utensils, clothes,
technical equipment, everything.

I remember the first time she told me
that I should give her nicer presents.

And when I bought something
nicer, she said,

"Did you buy this
because of what I said?"

I'd say, "No, of course not."

She wanted me to know that
I didn't have to do as she said,

but that's what she expected of me
and this escalated more and more.

There was an expression,
"You can't go wrong with gold."

Royalty has all the gold and Jesus
has all the money in the world.

He can give me everything,
but he has appointed you to do it.

That's why she traveled so much.
She could do as she pleased.

A winding road.

This is just a fantastic view.

She's on camera!

The goal was
that Åsa would be with Jesus.

That was the ultimate goal.
That's what this was all about.

But there was a struggle
going on there too.

Why? You'll have to ask Urban.
He was the one who...

the leader behind it all.

Urban joined us in 2001, or thereabouts.

In the beginning he had a minor role,
but quickly he and Åsa became close.

He became a pastor eventually.

He took over the role
that Helge had occupied,

as some kind of Jesus substitute.

A tomorrow filled with hope

I went there to attend Bible School
for a week.

I discovered a great sense of community
and a wonderful atmosphere.

This is what I'd been longing for.

I tell my wife Susanne about it
and she felt the same way.

So we move to Knutby
in the autumn of 2001.

At Bible School in the autumn of 2001,
there's a final party.

She takes me aside and asks me
to read Psalm 45 in the Bible.

It's about the King Messiah
and His Bride.

The King Messiah
has a queen by His side.

When I finish reading it
she says, "It's me."

A woman should be led
by her husband.

A man is head over a woman.
When I stood there thinking

that Jesus is going to be
my husband,

I realize that I must have a man
to lead me, who knows this.

Because I'm a woman
and I can't lead myself there.

Therefore it was logical that Jesus
would send someone to guide me.

I put my trust in this, that Urban
was chosen by Jesus to lead me.

That he would communicate
what Jesus said.

I think... what I began to realize

is that our relationship
