to the house band five heterosexuals and a keyboard.

Six. How exciting is this? For the five weeks just gone, I'm in a Rock

'n' Roll Band! On TV we have had the elements of a truly great band

come together and tonight you will be voting for your favourite singer,

lead guitarist and drummer of all time. Can I say I am thrilled to be

hosting tonight. I have been passionate since first purchasing

my first single pearl's a singer by Elkie Brooks. For younger viewer

who don't know what vinyl is it's a ringtone made of plastic. Back in

the 70s I spent three whole years at an Emerson, Lake and Palmer

giling. That was a drum solo. I didn't realise how they would be be

in my life. I saw Iggy and the stoogeing, who could have dromeed

one day I would seek his advice on car insurance. Still great band

coop on coming. Gorillaz are playing Glastonbury. Who is going?

I am gutted I don't get to see U2. It is chilling to think that yolk

from the '80s while did Bono fall off the stage, because he stood too

close to the Edge should be so prophetic. The decisions tonight

lie with you at home. The viewers. To help you we have a panel of

experts. We have the Queen of 6 Music and the guitarist from

Kenickie, Lauren Laverne. Hello. APPLAUSE.

Sitting alongside her we have the narrator of h series and drummers

with The Shire Horses, a band cruelly overlooked tonight it is

Mark Radcliffe. APPLAUSE

There is nothing he doesn't know about popular music.

And finally, once upon a time he was called Clarke Kent, he has a

career as a film composer but we know him tads drummer from the

Police it is Stewart Copeland. That is your line up right there

there. And to help steer you in maybe the right direction we have a

Green Room full of stars who will be advocating one of our

shortlisted nominees. Have a look you will see who we have lined up.

think you are more powerful as a band. Most people are looking for

ways to misbehave and that is what we do. It is a marriage, it totally

is a marriage. No matter what band you are in, those guys have become

your bro brothers. You get the travel the world. Shag above your

station. Have it large above of your station. You live rock 'n'

roll life to the full. It is wonderful. It is the best thing you

could ever do. No regrets there. So that is what

it takes to make a great band but who have made the final three

greatest bands of all time? We are about the find out. All the bands,

they were decided but your votes on line. Here are the big three in an

order that can only be described as random if only I could pronounce it.

Led Zeppelin dragged the blues kicking and screaming into a brave

new 70s world of power riffing. Hair Sheikh shaking. Skins pounding

rock 'n' roll. -- hair shaking.

Each member an expert. They became an awesome force of nature as a

unit. Lovibly eccentric in the grand

British tradition and fearless in their choice of wardrobe Queen

brought the fun of the theatre into rock 'n' roll.

Their unqany knack of creating killer an thems that people want to

singalong to has made them one of the most successful musical exports

ever. The Beatles set sail from the mercy

to conquer the world and the hearts of millions. -- Mersey.

They changed the face of music, forever.

And 40 years after they split, new generations can't help falling in

love with the Fab Four. So remember, once again it is your

Right? And that is a good thing this show is called I'm in a Rock

'n' Roll Band! And Led Zeppelin are this rock 'n' roll band. Yes. They

even did a song called rock 'n' roll as a clue. They were never

cool when I was a kid. They were the real deal. They were like

musical porn. No-one sings like Robert Plant. No-one plays guitar

like Jimmy Page and no-one plays drums like John Bonham and no-one

has played organ or rock 'n' roll recorders like John Paul Jones. The

measure of their power can be found in John Paul joins. The Beatles had

a John and a Paul. Led Zeppelin had a John Paul, doing the work of two

whole Beatles. And doing nit the background. With Led Zeppelin it is

not just the music, every trashed hotel room, every poodle haired

rock Muppet. Every groupy is an echo of Led Zeppelin's mythical

assault on the States. It is a wonder there is a building standing

in the Midwest of America. In the middle of this they came down can

Queen had the same sort of kudos at the Beatles or Led Zeppelin, I

would be wrong. If I was to say to you they were the first or the

heaviest band you would laugh at me. But you have to remember why you

are here tonight. It is to find the best band. Now I want to give you

examples. I was lucky enough to be standing on the side of the stage

during Live Aid in 95, and I saw everyone that day, I saw Queen, I

saw U2, Jagger, Bowie, the lot. And, something special happened at 6.00.

Freddie came past me, and he was wearing his white jeans and vest,

he sat in front of the stage on this piano, and he went straight

into Bohemian Rhapsody. Queen were unbeliever b. It was the best

life. It was at that moment I realised it was why they are that

good. Everybody loves them. I doesn't matter what creed, colour,

religion, sexuality. Everyone loved them. It was the first time in my

life I experienced band envy. I would have given anything, there

and then, to be John Deacon. Even though Spandau had been on that

stage, like two hours earlier, Queen were the best and are the

best band in the world. 39 years later, still going,

Beatles ten year, Led Zeppelin only went for ten years. Queen still

going, selling out stadiums 39 years later. You have to vote for

Queen. APPLAUSE

Beautifully put. Quite moving. I don't know whether I would say

they are still going really. It is not the original line up. Thank you

Martin Kemp. I get a chill down my spine hearing the starred of under

name and The Beatles go together like two things that don't go.

bigging up The Beatles. Bigging them up it like suggesting the

Queen owns a bit of property. The Beatles are Great Britain. They are

woven into fabric of the country. They are in the hearts of every man

woman and child. They changed the face of music single-handedly. I

remember listening to the first Beatles album I had Rubber Soul.

The harmy s that known has been able to repeat. But I could go on

forever about statistic, we know about The Beatles. We all know. But

what I want to say is I met Paul McCartney a few time, but I was

outside a pub a couple of months ago with a mate of mine Dave who is

a huge Beatles fan and there is Paul McCartney. He was saying go on

and ask him to come in for a drink. He did. He has half of Guinness. My

mate Dave board him to death and he left but before he left there was a

drop of din nis left in glass, you have never seen so many grown men

fighting over a bit of spittle. Dave my mate was first there. He

had the success and he drank it. He still hasn't written the follow

up to Sgt Pepper yet. The albums dominated every style of music from

Baroque to rock. That pushed the boundaries and I don't think

anything they have done has been surpassed since. They are the best

of everything that is good and great about our society. Without

getting too challenge rated. Frankly boys and girls they were

there would be no Queen or Led Zeppelin. All you need is love.

Nicely put. That is a big thing to end on. You have heard all three of

ABBA advocates. Allow open it up to debate. Stuart, we all came here

with opinions but if anything, did they change your mind? They all

broke my heart! Their advocacy. Particularly Al Murray. Did you not

shed a tear at his emotion? But I think, you have to look at the

record with these groups and they all skirted around this, indeed,

Led Zeppelin had the definitive bit higher riffs that everyone wanted

to learn. It Israel rock'n'roll. They totally rock! Queen, six or

seven, maybe 10 major hits. The Beatles, 30 number ones. And it's

not just quantity, number one! It is out of our hands. Stock bacon

and water men dominated the charts for many years! My money was on

that for many years! The Beatles, you are expected to like Sergeant

Pepper's, and for me, they're not the best albums, but... They are

important, they teach them in school. All bands, all four pieces,

the components are very different. Does that make a difference?

this seems straightforward. The Beatles are the epitome of a pop

group, they invented it. This is a I'm in a Rock 'n' Roll Band. Led

Zeppelin, the epitomise the rock and roll band. Queen are both, they

can be eliminated at this early stage! But listen... So we're left

with two bands, one of the most important things about a

rock'n'roll band is that when you see them, they have to be visceral,

thrilling. Nobody knows whether the Beatles would have been that. They

never developed into a live rock and roll band. They are a

collective of genius songwriting talent. Nobody could hear it! I

have answered it. I rest my case. It is Led Zeppelin! Fortunately, it

isn't just you... Give Queen ago! If the world had never had led

Zeppelin or the Beatles, well... They would have Jimi Hendrix!

changed popular culture but who had the most influence? The Beatles

changed the world. Three bands that definitely changed music, they made

their imprint but Suggs is right, the Beatles invented celebrity in

this country. They started. great! But they were not the best

rock'n'roll band. Every thing you say is right. A what the Beatles

had was the ability to have pop music and be able to capture the

atmosphere and a moment that immediately transports you to

another place and time. In another life. They do that better than the

other two bands. Queen are getting the short shrift! Would you like to

step up? Look at Led Zeppelin, look at those albums. Six or seven

fantastic albums. They do not use imagination in naming their albums!

Seven orate fantastic songs. But the rest, they were quite poor

album fellas. -- fillers. defence of Queen. Oh, don't start

that! Every member of Queen wrote a number one. If you look in terms of

the band that has more than the sum of its parts... I'm changing my

vote to Queen! Queen's Album titles for Marx Brothers films! Whose body

of work is most impressive? You cannot argue with statistics?

Beatles are the most impressive but that does not mean they are the

best rock'n'roll band. The best rock'n'roll band is Led Zeppelin?

The Beatles are the major influence. We don't argue that. Rock'n'roll is

the banner. It does not have to be rock music. Does it have to be a

special live act? No, I just think rock'n'roll covers everything. The

Police. We were pretty good life! Did Spandau Ballet have rock 'n'

roll moments?! We were so rock 'n' roll, we cannot go into it! You are

immovable? Yes. I haven't heard anybody shift me from my first

opinion that I formed in my dressing room compared to the

lavish suite afforded our visiting American press and! I'm surprised

you are disappointed. Led Zeppelin are a great band but when I see you

as the Pub Landlord, it is Queen? Isa and that was you? No, he does

not have any taste! You don't like Queen? The problem is, we are

arguing over three very great and important bands but I love Queen's

music but it is like British folk music, we like it whether we like

it or not. They are like a musical waiting to happen. It happened and

it's not very good! Whose body of work has to the test of time best?

You are going on rock 'n' roll performance. Let's talk about the

actual work. Whose work has survived and is the most popular

today? The Beatles have a kind of a sense of being so ahead of their

time at the time that it still sounds fresh today. Led Zeppelin,

awesome and massive, but they sound retro. And Queen to take you back

to a moment in time. The Beatles went beyond that. I think it has

more relevancy. As Martin said, it is a generic term but when the

Beatles started, rock 'n' roll was a certain type of music. Black

Americans and the Beatles were a rock'n'roll band, that is how they

started. They were. It is being heated already. But it is what you

think that tongue, it is up to you... Here is a quick reminder of

guitarist was always the most important, he was... The genius is

behind the guitar. It is a type. You're always going for chicks and

Who is the best guitar player? That The argument may go on but we will

have a decision this evening. Who has made it into our top three rock

'n' roll guitarist of all time? The waiting is over. This is the the

shortlist. Could jend be the ultimate six

Stringer? -- Jimi Hendrix. His licks and

tricks inspired a generation as he made the impossible appear

effortless. Playing it upside down. Bringing

his teeth into the equation. There was nothing he wouldn't try.

He is the Ponty of power playing -- upontive of power playing. He is

Jimmy Page. After test flights with The Yardbirds he took off as axe

man with Led Zeppelin. I give you the thinking man and

woman's guitar player Mr Jimmy Page. Top hat. Check. Gravity defining

cigarette in corner of mouth. Check. Less Paul strung low. It could only

be that guitarist Slash. Haze form the licks of the Parthenon that was

Guns 'n' Roses. No-one would argue with any of

those three being there. Most of us have tried, I like millions of

others tried to learn it. Failed to master the streets of London by

Yes. Why am I stood here defending Jimi, he needs no defending. He was

the best guitarist of all time. No doubt. First time I heard him I was

on holiday at Butlins, and the tannoy played music out throughout

the holiday resort and the first thing I heard that struck me as

being the most fantastic sound I had heard in my life was Jimi

Hendrix doing Voodoo Child. Bursting out. Oh what a sound. It

was the future. It was a spaceship. The past, it was John Lee Hooker

with a fuzz box and, but, oh, Jimi! And then I saw him, once, I was

nine-year-old, and he was doing a gig at a pub in Darlington and he

drove past in a Daimler, and in his full military gear, and I saw him

and I chased him down the road. And he smiled at me. And that moment is

emblazed on my heart adds is his music. When I reach to my CDs I

reach for the Hendrix, he was the most innovative, the most fantastic,

and still is the best guitarist in the world when he first came over

to Britain and played in a club a little club, in Britain, Eric

Clapton was seen weeping outside. And everyone knew that it was over

once Jimi started playing. He is dead now sadly, the best guitarist

alive is Jeff Beck of course, but, Jimi was the best guitarist ever in

Quite beautiful. Quite passionate. Quite emotional. That was very

emotional. From the heart. Most of us were moved by that. From the

heart. Now to Jimmy Page and promoting his cause, an auteur, a

DJ and solo artist who is the father of a Border Collie named

Maude which is why I will call him the dogfather of pop. It is Mr Mark

Hello. When I was a teenager growing up, in New York, if you

wanted to get laid you were good at sports or you could play Stairway

on the guitar. I sucked at sports so I thought I would break out Led

Zeppelin 4, and that is what I had to do if I wanted to see the

promised land. See Jimmy Page could get you laid because everything he

wrote and played was in a swagger coupled with Mel dick pieces that

could melt the hearts of icy prom Queens. Even my renditions got me

to third base with 15-year-old girls in training bras and brace,

but back to Stairway. I will admit what Page laid down that day has

become so enetrenched in our culture we have become immunised to

its 18 string imagine -- majority and the fact it can be heard in any

guitar shop at any minute of the day has made it a punch line. But

wheneverry single teenage kid wants to play that riff to be Jimmy Page

in an instant there is a reason. You will never get laid playing

welcome to the jungle. I tried and failed. That is why you should vote

for Jimmy Page, the best guitar player of all time.

worthy contender and an insight if what would have happened if Anita

Dobson had a child with Isambard Kingdom Brunel. His add vote o

advocate is someone whose performance of Cheryl Cole in Sport

his place in the Pantheon of guitar greats. He had done more than that.

His is a guitar that sings songs nobody else knows and nobody else

can play. If the holy spirit was to reveal itself in human form it

hand a Les Paul in the other. Slash is rock 'n' roll. Some of you may

argue to be a true great you have to die young. Well, Slash did.

Legend has it, after being pronounced dead he wasry vieved by

like anybody else you know? You watch him live you will see

miracles. This is more than 5,000. I implore you vote for Slash.

doesn't. I'm a drummer. Mark for you the best guitarist the one you

most enjoy listening to. Hendrix invented a lot of what we know as

the rock 'n' roll guitar. Jimmy Page may technically be the best

and he almost had the whole sound of a band coming off the fret board.

It was almost not a solo instrument. Slash is a great guitar player. It

was lovely to hear you extol the virtue of Snake Pit. It is all

right you were probably too old for them. I am glad I am a bit older if

Slash is all you had the feed on. Slash is a combination of the

cliches that the other two invented for real sort of thing. He is a

cartoon character really. What he did it came from a real place. I

don't doubt that he is the product of these other two gentlemen, but,

you know, you can be first to market and have the best product.

What he did and became is rock 'n' roll. He was third to market. He

wasn't first. It is not about who did it first. I can't be about that.

An ridiculousness has a very important place in music and in

rock 'n' roll. You have to be not frightened to be ridiculous and the

fact Slash isn't is a good thing. thought I was going to have to fire

somebody there. Who had the biggest impact. Slash is a hybrid. That

surely detracts from his impact. Hendrix was original. When he came

out it changed. I don't know about that. Yard birds predate Hendrix.

He used the fuzz box. The marshal stack. We should let Mark have a

stay because Hendrik has -- Hendrix has won. Jimi Hendrix was

unbelievable. Did stuff the world had never seen. Wouldn't page you

would have had no Ramon, no punk, no indie, no Run DMC. You have no

hip-hop. That is nonsense clearly. If you listen to Led Zeppelin,

Kashmir is like a modern hip-hop That was the swagger. THEY ALL TALK

AT ONCE. WHO PRODUCED SCAPTS THE MOST. HE CHANGED THE WAY He changed

the way a single instrument was played. It is very rare one person

symbolises, absolutely the change. And I think Hendrix, much as I love

Jimmy Page, and I am a huge Led Zeppelin fan, I am not saying Slash

is bad. He is brilliant. I could have done without the fag or the

shades or the top hat. It is putting too much together. It's a

bit cliche. We are not operating a hands up system here Vic. It is a

points based system. Let me ask. Riffs, who has created the best

riffs. Don't just shout out names. Depend on who you are. If you are

anybody under 40 it is Slash. He is a monster. He invented the guitar

as sex object. If you are a mew circumstances a guitarist, it is

yimy page. He had the widest vocabulary. He played the mandolin.

He has the most technique. Should the mandolin not be held against

him. It is Jimi Hendrix ail the way. That is who every drummer wants to

play with. As if anyone cares about Jimi Hendrix is the key guitarist,

but Slash, it could refs... 20 monster guitar riffs. No need for

shouting! Put your hand up, sir! Jeff Beck, he should be up there.

This is hard enough with only three people! What is rock 'n' roll and

what is pop is? If you see the silhouette of Slash, you think,

rock'n'roll! You have to raise your hand! Too late! Rock, pop and blues,

everything into one! Having sex with five women... That is what he

did after the show! There are two types of men in this world...

People who had a whole lot of love and people who did not, Jimmy Page,

I love Jimi Hendrix, he was an amazing virtuoso player but if you

look at his songs, Black Dog, it goes on... They don't play the

guitar behind their head because they can't! And of much highbrow

note we will wrap this up... Some fabulous.... That is what our panel

think. Plenty of food for thought. I don't know if it has changed her

mind but these were the numbers to make your all-important vote...

are a peculiar breed, the error bit mad. They are always caught balls.

is a caveman mentality... You will find drummers are a very typical

bearded man but when they go, they are astounding... Who doesn't love

drummers? But whose rhythm stick is the mightiest of all? Let's have a

Keith Moon was everything we wanted... Flamboyant, unpredictable

but vulnerable. His free form style defies description, it appeared

chaotic but it sounded great! His drumming was so much more than just

keeping the time. And where would rock 'n' roll be without someone

doing this...! Maybe he is best known from the Foo Fighters but

Dave Grohl's most enduring love is the drum... He made his name

perform live, something I am not proud of but I have been high

enough to witness him and his brilliance drumming with other

projects, not least at Glastonbury last year, Surrey, Reading Festival

and the anticipation of the unveiling of his new band was

about Dave Grohl. Not many drummers can capture attention like that. He

is a new generation, totally influenced by his fellow finalists.

He has the circle of John Bonham on his wrist. He has played with the

one continues to form new collaborations just to fill his

love of music. It comes back to the drumming. Singer, songwriter,

Your passion for Led Zeppelin shines through again. You can't get

enough och of them. It sounds like you asked the drummers to play

Countdown with you Squeezing words out. Most drummers don't know half

those words. Maybe they are not professional drummers. Life as a

drummer begins to beat away at the brain cells. Who was the best?

Grohl would be gobsmacked to be considered in the same company of

Moony and John Bonham. I would have to say he totally belongs up there

with those guys. Dave Grohl was much more of a musician, is much

more of a musician than either. Moony and John Bonham are gods of

drumming, you mentioned Moon's style. What is amazing about Keith

Moon he had the worst technique in history and yet he accomplished all

that. Look at the way he can't hold his sticks right. Look what he did.

Hang on. He did it. You told us Hendrix was mildly out of tune.

Next thing it is going to be you don't like the way Rembrandt holds

a paintbrush. I doesn't matter how he held his sticks. He is agreeing

with you, we love hearing you talk because it's so weird! What is that

accent. Lived in England for 20 years. I still sound like an

American. It is not of this planet. Dave Grohl is not just a drummer.

He is a musician. Any guitarist wanting a drummer is going to go

for Dave Grohl. John Bonham I really close second but Dave Grohl

has all the chops. He has it all. He should have thrown a couple of

television through the window. can't even smoke in the room. You

haven't enjoyed the success Stewart has? I have to say when I put my

first list down Stewart Copeland was on my list. His playing was

astounding. APPLAUSE. You were this close to

the top three. One out of the two of us was going to get a dressing

room about the size of a football pitch it was going to be him: We

picked on drummer, I remember interviewing Pete Townsend and he

said his style came about because if Keith Moon wasn't lead guitarist

in the who John went whistle was. We have picked drummers who are

tour de force, there are drummer like Charlie Watts. I never saw

John Bonham play, I think he maybe the ultimate rock 'n' roll drummer.

I have seen Dave Grohl play. It was frightening. It was utterly

terrifying, I mean it was just brute force. I imagine John Bonham

in his pomp would have been like that. That combination of fantastic

technique, but brute force, and a drummer like that in full flight is

one of the most pour of things you will see. There is little to choose

between them. It comes down less to personal feeling, we are all

excited by all three. The thing about drummers is you have that

primal response to them, so if you get a drummer you love they really

matter to you. I love John Bonham, you can't argue with that, and I

grew up with Nirvana and when Kurt Cobain killed himself I cried for

days and days. For me Keith Moon has a spirit and you can hear nit

the songs, and in the way he plays and he has a spirit that has lived

on in rock 'n' roll and spread out and is bigger than him, and bigger

than The Who, who are probably my favourite band. Bigger than

everything which shows how powerful music could be. You could argue

that he was the first big superstar drummer. He was the first one

people know about. Buddy Rich. Ringo. Ringo was in The Beatles.

You wouldn't have wanted Beatles Keith Moon in The Beatles. He was a

problem for the rest of the band. He is so much fun for the audience

to watch but I am sure Pete towns b end would probably say... Pete

Townsend lost 25% of his hearing on one explosion of the gunpowder in

the drum kit. You have like, you have John Bonham in the middle. You

have before and after in rock drumming. Keith Moon, he is this

incredible force, but you can't pin him down. He overpowers the band.

John Bonham's playing is, it is rock drumming Chris liceed and what

Dave Grohl does is because of John Bonham, he San awesome player. I

think... In terms of what he brings to a band, he encompasses

everything about a band. He creates riffs. Dave Grohl would never want

to win. That is why you should. is not up to us ment. The audience

got most excited about Dave Grohl I felt.

APPLAUSE Is that just because you are young people happy to be out

late at night? It is the hardest one to call, because the drum solo

is the time I thought they put them in so you had a good time to go to

the bar or toilet. That is why Dave is the best because he never played

a drum solo. It is It is hard to say that is a hard, what is it a

paradiddle. People don't get excited about the drumming. I think

you do. Whether you know it or not. People respond to rhythm. If you

look at another great drummer. The drum refer the stone roses. You

can't help but wind yourself in, even those of us who can't dance.

It is a difficult one. I think all of these three guys are an amazing

force of nature. I think Moon is edged out by sort of what Al says

by the other two, pinning down the band, nailing it. I think that, I

think those two... The foundation of that the band... There are no

great bands without great drummers. There are great bands that might

have a ropey guitar players. Blue Monday is a great song. There are

no great bands without a great drummer. You need a great drummer.

It is about the rhythm. The opening bars of blue Monday, it freaks you

out. It is incredible and it's a drum machine. You can make great

records with a drum machine. could argue this all night but we

don't have time. Stewart. Shut up. The intellectual qualitys are

important. Because you are a drummer. Only you at home can make

The archetypal swaggering rock god, his style, exaggerating the

approach of the blues greats, has defied hard rock singing ever

since... Flamboyance personified, Freddie Mercury and his moustache

to machismo was blended with pure camp for a front man who stood out

a mile... Brimming with perfectionism and ego, his

personality exploded from the stage... What would you crown him

Kurt Cobain emerged from the Underground and a whole generation

find a voice to call their own... His star imploded too soon but his

music continues to inspire and his legend lives on... Well... There

you have them. You might love the guitars but in our hearts, we

always want to be the front person. Who is the best? Here are the

his got and make it so soulful and believable. And what he wanted you

to hear. Nine albums, unbelievable. Over 200 million records. Led

Zeppelin reformed to play attribute and 90 million people, sorry, 9

million people apply for tickets. That is still up there! In the

audience, Sir Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, Arctic monkeys, Dave Grohl

and Oasis. That pretty much sums up the standard of Robert Plant and

Led Zeppelin. Robert, for me, has always been about music, everything

he does, even to the album he put out with Alison Krauss last year,

some of the best vocals I have ever heard, he is still making records

right now. The appeal to the masses. For that reason, give a lot of love

to Robert Plant! He is still at the top of his game. Yes!. Next,

Freddie Mercury. I'd loved to have been there the day Brian May met

Freddie. I can only assume Brian wandered into the wrong pub. His

advocate is a legend of radio presenting, it's Whispering Bob

Well, I'm here to talk about Freddie Mercury because I just

think he was so great, the first time I met him, it was in 1973. I

had seen Queen supporting at the Rainbow and I thought they were

fantastic and I invited him to do a session for my sounds of the 70s

programme on Radio 1. I walked into the studio at 9:30am, completely

ungodly for rock 'n' roll, but he was already there. He was running

through a number and as he signed, under the studio light I could see

the veins standing out on his neck as he was stretching himself to the

absolute limit. Even at that moment, even on a run-through, he was

putting his heart and soul into his vocals. On every level, Freddie

Mercury was the definitive front man. You only have to look at the

Live Aid future -- footage to see that on the biggest stage on the

biggest night, he completely stole the show. He brought an extra

dimension to Queen's performances, no doubt, a sense of theatrics,

ballet and opera. He absolutely commanded the stage. As we know, he

was very shy of stage, he was sometimes very insecure and under

the glamour he was vulnerable and caring and I think that his hands

really responded to that. But that first impression of him that I had

has always endured and I never saw him give anything less than 100%.

He had everything, Freddie Mercury was unique. The greatest frontman

and the greatest singer in a rock and roll band. Wrote Freddie

Mercury! -- vote. Quite persuasive. I love Freddie Mercury. And now,

the final advocate for lead singer - Kurt Cobain. Kurt's advocate is

self confessed grunge lover, Kurt Cobain was a real deal, the

ultimate front man, he spoke to millions of teenagers, of which I

was on. When rock'n'roll music was having a weird time with bands like

on job the and Guns N' Roses, we find Kurt Cobain. At my school it

was R&B or deaf and discovering a fan of us an important turning

point. With the band stripped down, it was his amazing voice and when

he sang, you wee bit -- you really believed him. It was like he was

not needed until he was there. Against Ryan Jones, Jimmy Hendrix

and Janis Joplin, he died at 27, leaving a beautiful memory. He will

remain forever Young and Kurt Cobain was our last great rock star.

And let's not forget, totally hot. That is why tonight, he deserves

your foot! Thank you. Nicely put. Who stands out as a performer? Did

you ever seen a van at a play live? Like I care about singers! I play

the drums! Actually, drummers to share something with singers. We

both suffer a little insecurity. Neither of us are sure we really

are musicians. At least the drama or has this massive thing that we

call an instrument and the rest of the band do not. Even the bass

player can say, do it, but the singer has to do this with the

phallic object. I don't want that. Not a problem for Freddie Mercury!

We do occasionally have to notice the singer. But today, nobody wants

to look like rubber plant right now. Not even he sings that way or looks

that way any more. Freddie Mercury had his place and that look, it was

very powerful. But kids are not dressing up like that. Kurt Cobain

is still utterly current. Is that a good thing? Do we not want our

front meant to be larger than life? Those things are cyclical and Kurt

Cobain was 15 years ago, which is the right time... I was 15 when

they were up there. And these things come back. There will be

another time and the future when that 70s thing will look more

current and maybe even Queen welcome back, News are headlining

Glastonbury, they could not be more like Queen if they wrote songs

about knotty nannies! Fat bottomed girls! Queen were unique. Nirvana

did make us interested in rock, but was he strong enough for you to

argue the best of all time? Well, Freddie Mercury and Kurt Cobain are

both iconic figures. Both really potent and persuasive front men but

they could not be... Those are the two ends of the spectrum, Freddie

Mercury is about show business, the entertainment. Kurt Cobain is the

opposite, it is baring your soul, getting the stuff out that needs to

be spat out. It depends on what you want from a rock'n'roll band.

Robert Plant is the epitome. Robert Plant is the epitome of what be

think of as the classic shaggy mane and microphone, legs akimbo --

stocking the stage. Although you think Kircubbin is the outside,

dark course, in this race, he has the James Dean factor that the

other to do not. They were both having excesses of stage, but I

think them is that thing in rock and roll about being tortured and

confected and he was genuinely a poet. As a lyricist. Are we talking

about the singer or the front and? It is a combination of the two.

For the entertainment you describe, they developed the -- as they went

through, Freddie Mercury had the sense of theatre. He was very

British. Yes, he was. Have you ever liked seeing Queen perform? I have

never liked Queen. Am I allowed to say that? It is too late! What

about Led Zeppelin? Surely they have something in common with

Nirvana? They never held a place in my heart. Kurt Cobain made me care

again. I think people did really warm to his troubled nature. You

loved how tortured he was. Freddie Mercury, you never felt he was

burning his soul. It was more like bearing other parts! Do you think

we can say Robert Plant was one of the best? I don't think, as much as

I Love Queen and Freddie Mercury, the highs and lows that Robert

Plant had, that was a different vocal style, especially for a man.

Before Freddie Mercury even Kay Moran. Technically, I think Robert

Plant is up there. Beautiful acoustic songs and then rocking out,

singing rock and roll and doing the stands. Everything that Freddie

Mercury was doing. Absolutely, Robert Plant is 100%. The biggest

TV show, Top Of the Pops, that was the scene Chick -- the theme tune,

Led Zeppelin and Robert Plant have an absolute big stake in music.

Nirvana connected with a lot of people. Yes, I love them and I love

Kurt Cobain, I remember the first time I heard Smells Like Teen

Spirit. It was amazing. The whole band was amazing. I am here talking

about Robert Plant az and adds a vocalist his ranges is massive and

we are talking about a singer. This is what... That is, this is the

point where you get into argument of music isn't football. It is not

ant who sings the best or scores the most goals. You can't add music

up. That is the difficulty with doing the programme. You know what

I am giving my vote to Freddie for the hats. Simple as that. And the
