Ladies and gentlemen, Tim Rice.

Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.

It's a great pleasure to be here at the Albert Hall

in a concert version of a show

I wrote or began writing

with Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson

about a quarter of a century ago.

And I think at last we're getting it right.

And one of the reasons I think we're getting it right

is that we've got a terrific team here

under the direction of Hugh Wooldridge.

And I'd like you to meet them--

I'd like you to meet them

just before we get going.

So will you please welcome Josh Groban

Idina Menzel

Adam Pascal

David Bedella

Clark Peters

Herry Ellis

and the pride of Scotland Marti Pellow!

And now will you please be kind enough to welcome

the man whose charismatic baton

will control the proceedings

Maestro David Firman.

This is Walter de Courcy reporting live for Global Television.

The opening match of the 1979 World Chess Championship

is about to begin here in Merano, Italy.

The title will go to the first man who wins six games.

The players are the champ, ion from the United States

Frederick "Freddie" Trumper,

and the challenger from the Soviet Union

Anatoly Sergievsky.

The political overtones of such a match between a Russian and an American

have created a great deal of media attention from around the world.

And they're off.

There has been a sensational development

in the very first game of the World Chess Championship

here in the snow-covered Tyrollean town of Merano, Italy.

The board and pieces have been thrown to the ground in disgust

by one or other or both of the players.

The world champion Freddie Trumper

has stormed out in a rage.

It looks personal.

Trumper has demanded that Sergievsky apologize

for making him walk out.

Unless someone bangs their heads together,

the championship could be abandoned

after just one game.

Welcome back for more from Bangkok, Thailand.

This is Walter de Courcy reporting for Global Television.

And now a few words from the ex-champ,

who needs no introduction.

Thank you, Walter.

The all-Russian struggle for world chess supremacy

is well underway here in this steamy city.

Both players may be Russian, but this is a titanic battle

between East and West.

Anatoly Sergievsky, the current world champion

is now a British citizen

having defected to the free world when he beat me last year.

It's honors even so far with the match two games old.

In the first game, Sergievsky was inspired,

and his Soviet opponent, Leonid Viigand,

played like a man petrified, awestruck.

But in the second game Sergievsky seemed troubled,

distracted, and Viigand sneaked a subtle victory.

You know, Walter I'm quite glad I retired.
