for what we're about

which is the shanghai tunnels.

part of portland's history.

and we're lucky enough to be
investigating

a part of the tunnels
which are newly opened.

and there haven't been
many people down there

to kind of look around
for the paranormal.

So that's what we're here
to investigate.

So on that note,

and go get shanghaied.

why are they called
shanghai tunnels?

so shanghai tunnels,
as far as we know,

they were used in the late 1800s.

And people were being
essentially kidnapped

and used as slaves...

It was used for
these kind of fight clubs.

as well as shanghaiing people.

And a lot of times
they would die

before they even made it
to the ships

because they would be od'd
on drugs they were being given.

I remember the bar very well.

the shanghai tunnels
went all over portland.

It was like
an underground railway.

But this was happening up until,
like, the 1950s.

We've been able to put so much
into this museum.

- Artifacts that I've collected

since I was seven,
since I first went underground.

Michael has a long history

of being the subject matter
expert in the shanghai tunnels.

He teaches at
portland state university

about this part of history.

Shanghai tunnels was a network

where men could be dropped
through trap doors in saloons.

- Mm-hmm.
- These were transient workers --

loggers, sailors,

and they would give them
knockout drops,

bring underground
to the ship and collect

- $50 a man blood money.
- Wow.

These men had no rights.

When they were sold
to a ship captain,

these guys were not conscious,
they were knocked out.

It's kind of like when mum sends
you on tour, dad.

Very funny.

At that time,
the captain presented men

with papers they had to sign.

If they didn't sign the papers,
they were stowaways.

So overboard they went.

- Wow.
- But also,

you can't forget the women
who were victimized.

They grabbed them
right off the street.

They held them in
underground cells to break them.

How did nobody
in the higher-ups --

as far as the city goes --

how did they not know
this was going on?

They knew.
They made money off of it.

And also, these were considered
dregs of society.

When you really dive into
the history

of what was happening
at that time in portland,

it is horrific.

It's a history of portland

that some people
don't want us talking about.

We started the tours
20 years ago.

other areas

that we've been working on --

the couch street tunnels
and the 6th avenue tunnels.

But the more we renovate,

the more paranormal things
tend to happen.

And generally, the work crews
will last an hour

and they leave.

They can't handle it.

in this area.

for a few interesting things.

biting people's ears off.

People have come into this area

and felt something
kind of nibbling at their ears.

She'd never struck me
as the type of person

that would, um, be hysterical,

that would witness an event,
then, you know, exaggerate it.

I always think back to

is that shovel story
that she talked about.

because what in this world

levitate like that?

I've been to, but one of them

Actually, one in England
that I went to,

it was called black monk house.

When I was there, I got --

I ended up with these scratch
marks on my lower stomach.

And I just felt
this intense burning.

And when I lifted up my shirt
to see what it was,

there were
these two scratch marks,

almost like a cat
had taken its claws

and dragged them
across my stomach.

they've filled in tunnels,

kind of blocked it off,

And they helped keep it secret.

And there are still

a lot of these tunnels
in existence today.

for illegal gambling.

Back in the day, they used to
keep slaves in the attic.

And, like, torture them
and stuff,

and it was just a really nasty place.

Like, a candle blew out
right in front of us, and...

That place is freaky, for sure.

the couch street tunnels
