I mean, when did all this start?

Uh, a lot of the mutilations
were close to the river
down there.

-Okay.
-Yeah.

And in those fields down there
and farther down and...

How many cattle did you have
on property when it began?

Uh, probably at that time
we had around a hundred cows.

-Okay,
-But we're down
quite a bit now.

And where was
the first one found?

Uh, it was right
just east of that,

-east of where I came
out of that house there.
-SHANNON LEGRO: Mm-hmm.

Just in that patch right there.

And that was
the very first one
that I noticed.

I really looked at it good,

because it was right close
to the house,
and that's when it had...

uh... well,
the eyes were missing,

laser cuts on the body and...

LEGRO: How long was it
until the second one was found?

[DOG BARKING]

MILLER: I've been having them
pretty near every year.

-LEGRO: Every year?
-MILLER: Yeah.

LEGRO: How long
you guys been out here?

MILLER:
Uh, this started in 1996.

So far, I've had 16 of them
that I've counted.

Cows and calves
that were mutilated.

And pretty much one a year,
for the most part?

-Yeah, more or less.
-Yeah.

And sometimes,
it go a little longer,

but then we had another one
out here in this pasture
out here.

And it was just
out in the prairie,

and there was
brush around there
and everything

and its ribs were broke.

It didn't just
fall over and die

-because it's ribs
wouldn't have been broke.
-Right.

And so it had to be dropped
for quite a ways.

One time I had two of them,
two cows at the same time.

LEGRO: Right next to
each other, essentially?

MILLER:
Right next to each other.

And what happened...

uh, when I had those two
and they were down there

in that arroyo down there.

Uh, one of them was
completely mutilated

and the other one was laying
right beside it
with a back broke.

And it wasn't mutilated.

Somehow they are able to,
uh, draw them up

to their UFO or whatever,
you know,

and then they do what they do,

and then they drop them
back down.

These two cows
were right together,

and so when they started
picking them up,

and then as they go up
a little higher,

it narrows down
and the one dropped off.

LEGRO: Colorado.
Visions of the Old West
come to mind.

Ghost towns and pasture land
alongside rugged mountains
and endless skies.

Oh, yeah, and mines.

Lots of those in this state.

I'm Shannon Legro,

and my search for stories
has brought me
to the Centennial State.

I've been curious
about the cattle mutilation
phenomenon

and its connection
to the UFO mystery
for a long time,

and along with
the Small Town Monsters crew

and documentarian
Seth Breedlove,

I have already begun
to uncover stories

that connect
strange lights in the sky

to mutilated animals
on the ground,

which is what brings me here,

to this valley
in the heart of Colorado,

which also happens to be
positioned neatly

as the heart of
the animal mutilation subject.

The place where it all began,

the San Luis Valley.

-BREEDLOVE: So we just got here.
-LEGRO: Yeah.

Like, honestly,
I'm pretty astounded

at the varying topography
of Colorado.

I've briefly at one point
driven through part of it,

and it was very mountainous.
I wasn't expecting

all the open valleys,

and almost a high desert feel
similar to Nevada.

-So it reminds me
a lot of Utah.
-BREEDLOVE: Mm-hmm.

-Which happens to house
Skinwalker Ranch.
-BREEDLOVE: Right.

And a lot of the ranches here

also have a lot of
the same activity,

including cattle mutilations
and horse mutilations.

BREEDLOVE: I guess
what surprised me
about the area

is I've always been aware
of the rich history of,

like, UFO sightings
and cattle mutilations.

I didn't realize there's such
a wide range of activity
in the area,

and reported activity,
and it really
reminds me of

places we've looked into,
like the Chestnut Ridge

or Skinwalker Ranch,
like you mentioned.

I'm excited to see
if we can make
some connections

between all these
various phenomena

and come up with something
that correlates the high
strangeness in the state.

LEGRO: When you were
mentioning on some
of the readings

that we were doing
before we got here

of people that think
some of the mountains
are actually hollow,

hollowed out
by the government
for whatever reason.

BREEDLOVE: At one time,
mining was what Colorado
was known for.

I think... I looked online
and did some research
before we came,

and you're talking,
like, 18,000 mines
around the state at one time.

So that's an
interesting correlation
to what, you know,

we looked into
in West Virginia.

And there is
this activity, too,

that seems to emanate
from the earth itself.

I'm curious to see
how many of the people

that we're going to interview
think it's military related

-or truly off-planet.
-Mm-hmm. Does our...

Yeah, like some kind of
a true "ET" experience
or things coming

from another dimension
or universe, planet, whatever.

My name is Katie Griboski.

I am the State Director
for Colorado MUFON,

and I'm also the administrator
for MUFON's MARRS Project.

BREEDLOVE: USA-wide,
how many UFO reports are there
on file? Do you know?

Well, Colorado averages
about, you know, 12 a month,

so about 250 a year-ish.

So, you know,
populated states

obviously have more reports
than less populated states,

like, for example, Wyoming
compared to California.
Big difference.

So, you know, 10,000 reports.

I mean, you know,
it just varies year to year.

LEGRO: Well, Richard,
Thanks for being here.

Uh, first of all,
how long have you been
in Colorado,

and how long have
you been looking into,
specifically, the UFO?

Well, I've been in Colorado
for 22 years,

paranormal investigator
for 25, 26.

And investigating
the UFO phenomenon

since my publishers asked me
to write a book on it
five years ago.

Colorado is a state that is
defined by its valleys,
its mountains,

its prairies, and there are
many instances of craft

that have been seen
or at least reported
emerging from mountains.

Whether they're in
some cave system
we don't know,

some subterranean hiding place.

Also rising from
bodies of water
such as lakes.

Colorado also has
a rich history of mining,

and indeed, we have
the School Of Mines here,
which is very prestigious

and is known for its geology,
digging into the earth.

So, you personally,
when you get a report

into MUFON, into your office,

how often do you actually
physically are able to go out

and go to the location
where the sighting happened?

Interestingly enough,
that happens less,

less than you might believe
it happens.

A lot of the work MUFON does,
and our investigators do

are on the computer.

But if a case is good enough
and it's active,
actively happening

because most times
you'll just see
lights in the sky,

and by the time
you get out there,
the phenomenon's gone.

Now, we will go on location
if it's a repeated event

or if they have
evidence on the ground

or if it was
a more close encounter
we'll go out there

and try and do testing
and interviews face-to-face.

So the crafts that appear,
they vary throughout.

A lot of this is
strange lights in the sky.

The classic, you know,
unidentified flying light.

And, of course, we live
in the age of the drone.

But then, there are
these lights that plainly
are not drones,

that behave in ways
which you could not control

a drone so sensitively,
that don't seem to obey

the laws of physics
as we understand them.

That will stop dead
and gain altitude

extremely quickly or decelerate
and then change course

far more quickly
than a piloted object could.

Over 80% of my cases
are what we call IFOs,
or Identified Flying Objects,

but then we have that 15-20%

that we have no idea
what they are,

and those go in as "unknown."

So they can be Unknown UAPs,
Unknown Other.

Generally speaking,
here in Colorado,

it's lights rather than
craft as such.

And, of course,
we've had a few cases

in which genuine
man-made objects
were mistaken for UFOs.

Do you get cattle mutilation
reports at MUFON?

No. I wish we got
more than we did.

We will from time to time,

but we don't get them as often.

And I really believe,
after the interviews I've done
out in these small communities,

and with ranchers,
this is a phenomenon

that has been
happening now for decades.

And a lot of these ranchers,
they don't want the publicity,
the stigma,

and more importantly,
I think, they know that
nothing will come of it.

Like, we have been trying
to get to the bottom
of what's been happening,

not only with cattle,
but horse, sheep,
other animals.

There's even been dogs.

Right now, when we look
at the global understanding,

the public perception of UFOs,

it's become a part of
the whole zeitgeist,
hasn't it?

This idea that cows,
horses, sheep, cattle,

are kind of either taken up,
moved, mutilated
by some unseen force.

One of the stranger
things by far,

and this is a phenomenon
that happened

throughout the '60s,
'70s, '80s, '90s,

was very common
amongst ranches
throughout the Midwest,

and still happens to this day
with no credible explanation.

And I just want to say,
I'm not the cattle
mutilation expert.

I mean, that's really
Christopher O'Brien.

That's been
their wheelhouse for decades.
[LAUGHS]

O'BRIEN:
My name's Christopher O'Brien.

I've been involved
researching and investigating

cattle mutilation phenomenon
for almost 30 years.

LEGRO: So, uh,
are there historical texts
or things like that?

Yeah, yeah.

I, uh... I found
the first outbreak
that's documented.

But I found it in 1605,
right after James I got in

as King,
and in the court records,

there is a very
interesting quote in there.

And it's "Lately hereabouts,
strange deaths.

"A hundred and one cases,
less in others.

"Strange sheep were found
with missing parts,

"the tallow and wool
left behind."

So, the first indication
that we have

of waves of mutilation is,
the earliest that I can find,

is 1605 in England.

This became
such a widespread thing.

You have researchers
like Linda Moulton Howe,

whose project,
A Strange Harvest,
I believe it was,

looked at this in depth.

But this is something
that's now been with us
for decades.

Uh, ranchers
still experience this
to this day,

usually in isolated places
that are in the middle
of nowhere.

So it's not something
you're gonna see
in downtown Denver.

But if you live way out
in the middle of the boonies,

it's certainly a concern,
and it certainly happens.

LEGRO: Colorado
is a mysterious place,

especially once you travel out
of the hub that is Denver.

There exists a stark division

between the cities
and the wilderness here.

Yet both boast
their own unique history
of unexplained occurrences.

The pasture lands
of the eastern section
of the state

give way to arid desert
to the south

and rugged mountains
to the west.

No single place looks
the same as any other.

Here, in the backwoods,
grassy prairies
and rugged wilds,

encounters with lights
in the sky are commonplace.

Craft are seen as frequently
as the planes that fly

into and out of
Denver International Airport.

And nearly everyone has
their own story about
a brush with the bizarre.

Colorado is home
to numerous military bases,

and this fact has helped
propel the strange sightings.

To be certain,
a fair number of the objects
or light seen overhead here

probably have
mundane explanations.

But that hasn't stopped stories

from spreading of
military installations

which possess a far darker
modus operandi.

Out here,
everyone encounters something,

even law enforcement.

MAN: So I spent eight years
in the United States Army.

I served in Afghanistan
almost a decade ago.

And then after that,
I went into law enforcement
here in the Denver metro area.

So I've worked
for two different agencies,

one up in the northern
part of the metro area

that was sort of
along the foothills,

and then I worked for
another agency
that was south of Denver

and that sort of bordered
the prairie, the plains,

east of the I-25 corridor.

So during that time,
I was a field training officer.

I trained new officers
straight out of the academy,

and I was also a trained
and FBI certified crime
scene investigator.

Colorado, it's very saturated,
as you guys have seen,

with military, with government.

The Fed Center out in Lakewood

is actually the largest
concentration of

government employees
west of the Mississippi.

We've got
Buckley Space Force Base,

we've got NORAD
down to the south.

MAN: [ON RADIO]
The nerve center
of the space tracking mission

is located deep inside
Cheyenne Mountain
in the Colorado Rockies.

Computers, led by a network
of sensors including radars,
telescopes, cameras,

-radio receivers, maintain
a constant...
-[RADIO STATIC]

...movements of the more than
4,700 objects

-still in orbit over the Earth.
-[RADIO STATIC]

Colorado also has no shortage,

of course,
of military installations.

Uh, Cheyenne Mountain,
out of which NORAD,

uh, was run
for the longest time,

is one of the most secure
facilities in the world,

designed famously
to withstand a hit
from a thermonuclear weapon.

We also have
Buckley Air Force Base,
which again is very close

to where we film now
in the city of Aurora.

Buckley Air Force Base
is where Space Command
operated from.

The Space Command
was responsible for tracking
objects in orbit

and the US military's
eyes in the sky
above the atmosphere.

And if you study
the UFO phenomenon
globally throughout the world,

whether we're looking
at the Soviet Union,
China, Europe, the UK,

there are countless instances
of UFOs being drawn
to military facilities.

And generally speaking,

the more top secret
the facility is,

the more attention
they tend to attract
from UFOs.

So there's always weird stuff,
you always hear weird things.

And so I experienced
a couple of those
when I was in law enforcement.

I had a few calls
in my career,

both on the north side
of the metro area

and then down south,
more closer to
the plains and the prairie.

This probably happened
about three or four times
in my six years on the road,

where we'd get a call
from somebody saying,

"Hey, I'm in my backyard,
I see some lights
moving in the sky.

"They're moving really weird,
they look like disks.

"Now they look like
a rectangle.

"They're kind of
zipping around,

"it doesn't make sense.
Can somebody come by?"

You sort of take those things
with a grain of salt.

But the fact that
they kept happening
three or four times

and it was always
very similar descriptions.

It was always,
"These lights are a disk.

"Now there's three of them,
and now they're a rectangle."

That was always kind of
the pattern that I had heard.

And it was weird
that it happened both
when I worked up north,

and then a few years later,
when I was down south.

And so the incident that
really caught my attention

when I was down south was

I was driving on the highway
one night, on I-25,

taking somebody down to jail,
and I'm coming back

and it's about 3:00 or 4:00
in the morning.

And so nothing's going on,
and it's pitch black dark

on this corridor
of the highway.

And, again, I got another call
saying, "Hey, this call's
coming in.

"We're getting weird reports
of lights out east
of the highway."

In this particular area
out east, there's
really nothing,

but it was just really strange
to get those light reports
again,

and I was kind of
at a spot on the highway

where it kind of
descends down a hill.

So I kind of have a view
of the area, I can kind of see,

like, what they're
talking about.

And I keep hearing
the radio chatter

from one of our
sister agencies, HAM,
in the area

were checking it,
and Dispatch has given us
notes saying,

"Hey, the RP,
the reporting person,

"is saying that
they still see it.

"It's right above their yard."

I'm on the highway
with a vantage point
of this area.

One of my buddies
from another agency,
from our county sheriff's,

he's in the neighborhood.

But the reporting party
is giving this description

that I have now heard
two, three, four times

in my law enforcement career,

working two different parts
of the Denver Metro agency.

Two completely
different agencies,

two completely different
dispatch areas.

One along the foothills,
one out closer
to the prairie,

and it just... The fact that
they synced up like that,

it just kind of stuck with me.
I'm like, that's weird.

But weird things happen
in the Colorado Mountains,

especially in the foothills
of the Denver Metro area.

Anywhere between Denver
and maybe the first half hour

to an hour into the Rockies,

where you have
a high saturation
of the population.

There's just weird stuff
that comes out of there
all the time.

LEGRO: Encounters
with the unusual
in this state run the gamut

from simple observations
of strange lights
to full-on craft sightings.

But while the abduction
phenomenon might have
come into its own

on the East Coast
with the Betty
and Barney Hill incident,

Colorado's history
of missing time reports

and abduction cases
is as old as New Hampshire's.

This is where the UFO
game takes a nasty turn.

Abductions
and cattle mutilations

throw a wrench
into the works
for those of us

who want to see
the subject return to
its once-hopeful roots.

But to ignore
the nastier side of the topic
is to ignore the truth.

The truth is, out here,

abductions are a big part
of what goes on,

and those abductions come
with lingering effects

for the witnesses
that can traumatize them
for years after the incidents.

Sometimes even for
the rest of their lives.

The most common
of those effects,

the feeling you're being
watched at all hours
of the day and night.

Probably the most interesting
abduction case I researched

was with a gentleman who,
sadly now, passed away
last year.

He asked me to give him
the pseudonym of Al.

And Al was
a respected paramedic.

So, a very knowledgeable
medical provider,

and he spoke very frankly
to me about this.

He claimed he'd been abducted
many, many times
since he was a boy.

And what was interesting to me
was that he didn't seek
any kind of publicity or fame.

You know, there was
nothing in it for him
to tell me this story.

When he heard that I was
researching UFOs,

you know, he spoke to me
and he said he would
like to tell me

the story in confidence,
and I could share it

as long as I kept
his identity secret.

He talked about the fact
that he was taken
quite frequently,

said that he had been
engaged against his will

in a breeding program
with extraterrestrials

and that they had
done this to him
throughout his entire life.

And it was something
that he found

both exhilarating
and terrifying
in equal measure.

LEGRO: Is this
one of those situations
where he's taken

however many years
or days or weeks
or months later,

and he actually feels like
he's met one of his own
"hybrid children"?

Yes, it is exactly
one of those situations.

And these stories sound
like the plot of
a science fiction novel.

I don't know what I believe,
but he certainly believed it.

He was 100% sincere in this,
and he believed it
until his dying day.

A lot of our, you know,
experiencer or abductee reports
that we get in,

let's say somebody has,
you know, an entity
in their bedroom or something.

The investigator will initially
make contact with the witness,

do a preliminary interview,
gather the data
and information,

and then MUFON has
what they call
an ERT team,

or an Experiencer
Research Team,

and often times,
we'll hook those types
of cases up

with that team of people
because they are
more qualified.

They're psychologists,
sociologists and all that.

Those would kind of
pass off to that ERT team,

which was headed up
by Kathleen Marden,

who was Betty
and Barney Hills' niece.

Uh, she has since
passed the torch on.

So that's what we do
with those cases.

LEGRO: Okay, rolling.

[EXHALES]

But you said you've
never told the story.

-Just to my wife.
-Yeah.

LEGRO: So,
when did this happen?

Watson, where were you
when this happened?

Just walk us through.

-Uh...
-Start at whenever point.

Uh, August 2019.

Sleeping in my own room

because my kid was
still breastfeeding

and it's kind of hard
for two people

and a two-and-a-half-year-old
to sleep in a bed together.

I was sleepin'
and I just thought
I was dreaming.

I kept hearing, you know,
"I came back for you."

It was like whispered.

You know, soft voice, you know,
[WHISPERS]
"I came back for you."

You know, kind of woke up,
went back to sleep,

and I just remember
hearing it again
and... just that,

you know, I started to wake up,
and there was this, like,

really bright, like,
police spotlight.

And it just kept getting
brighter and brighter.

You know, I tried to go back
to sleep and just ignore it
and keep hearing...

you know, I came back for you,
I came back for you,

and I was like...

Go see...
Go see what's going on.

So I go out through the...
like, the bathroom,

there's a little back deck.

And it's just getting
brighter and brighter,

and I'm just, like,
looking up and...

you know, you can't see
what it is. It's just light.

And, like, maybe
if I get closer,
walk down the steps

to, like, in between
the two houses,

and I'm just looking up,
and it's just like, it's...

you know, not blinding,
but bright enough.

I just froze, you know.

Don't remember
thinking anything,
doing anything.

I was just... Last thing
I remember is standing there,
like, looking up.

[EXHALES]

Uh, we hear
a lot of cases like this

where... Missing time, right?

Do you feel like
when you walked out

and, you know, you're
kind of trying to find

the source of light
and you're looking up at it.

Do you know for a fact
that it was mere moments
before you dove into bed

-or looked at a clock
at any point in time?
-I didn't.

But when the sun came up,
it definitely, I was
out there for a while.

You know,

I believe 45 minutes.

'Cause I knew
I was standing out there,

but it was like
I was paralyzed.

You know, just...

And at some point...

I just un... Unfroze.

Like I still...
I still couldn't even feel
my body, but...

And I just, you know,

ran, door...

Other door...

Literally dove into my bed.

It was like...

Maybe if I put the blanket
over my head, just close
my eyes, go back to sleep.

You know,
it was just baffling.

And I hear that,
it's just getting brighter
and brighter.

You know,
like the white blanket I have,
you know...

"We're coming back for you,"
and the light just

got super bright
and I just closed my eyes
and was just like,

you know, "Just go to sleep,
just go to sleep."

And it just started
getting dimmer.

And then all of a sudden
down there,
it was pitch black.

You know, they got the dark sky,
you know, right there.

And, uh, it was just
pitch black.

Dead silent and I was just...

laying there under my blanket.

[SNIFFLES] Uh...

Any other strange
things in the house happen
after that or before that

now that you think about it?

Before that, uh...

Just once as a kid.

You know, same light,
just not as big.

-It was the same light
just not as big?
-Yeah.

-'Cause it is...
-Just bright, you know.

LEGRO: You know,
they were saying...

Well, they came back.
They came back.

GRIBOSKI: You know, I think
what stands out for me

just in general when it comes
to that topic are the ones that,

whatever the phenomenon is,
whatever these experiences are,

seem to follow
some sort of pattern

of, like, when initial contact
is made,

typically early on
in childhood.

And then it seems like
in the teen years,

the experiences
get more intense

where maybe there is
an abduction

or beings in the room
or whatever.

And it seems to be during those
uh, puberty, teenage years.

I don't know
if you're just opening yourself
up to more things at that time.

Then things seem to really
quiet down for a while

and then you'll hear
back from these experiencers

and abductees, like, midlife.

So it's kind of interesting
how the pattern falls
on these cases.

A lot of people have seen the...
See a lot of different lights,

different things.

You know, not saying
they're aliens,

but it's not normal.

You know, a lot of people,
you feel like

you turn around, you feel
like something's there,
something's watching you.

You know, out in the woods,
in the house.

You know,
I get that occasionally,
you know, different places.

Most of time I was awake
for days and it just felt like
there was something there.

This concept
of high strangeness intruding
on everyday life...

Those that are experiencing
the abduction phenomenon

more so
than the contactee phenomenon

will often report this feeling
that they're being watched
by unseen eyes.

That there are people there
that they cannot see,

or that they are seeing people
who nobody can else can see.

Um, I've heard accounts
of these people driving

through the middle of town
and are being pursued

by people moving
impossibly quickly.

As if they are flying
through the air themselves
that nobody else can see.

And it's very tempting
to just describe this all
to being a hallucination.

But these cases are very,
very well documented.

LEGRO: Lights in the sky,
no matter how close
the encounter may be,

are part and parcel
for the UFO subject.

But there's much more
to Colorado's involvement
in the UAP game

and some of it
pushes the boundaries
of what we understand

about all of this.

Some of it harkens back
to some previous spots

we've visited
while searching for answers.

Places like the Chestnut Ridge
or Skinwalker Ranch.

The high strangeness factor
in Colorado is strong.

And it's something
that can't be ignored
as we begin

to shift our gaze away
from the smoggy
city limits of Denver

and the surrounding suburbs

and enter the prairies
that sit in the shadows
of the Rockies.

Here, in the forested hills
and valleys

at the base of one of the most
well-known mountain chains
in the United States

sit ranches and ranch land
that seem to act as a magnet
for the bizarre.

It's here where we got
our first hint as to just

how unusual the activity
in this part of the country
can become.

Katie herself became interested
in unusual phenomena

due to having her own brushes
with the bizarre at a ranch

owned by her family
known for having
high strangeness activity.

Years later, Katie,
through extensive research

and investigative work
of her own,

along with help from MUFON,

would uncover documentation
that verified

the activity taking place
at the ranch.

Perhaps most shockingly,

she also discovered
that not only were numerous
UFO researchers involved

in investigations there,

but that the US government
was called in as well.

BREEDLOVE:
What got you interested
in the subject?

Years ago, um,
I experienced some very
high strangeness activity

out at a ranch
in Elbert County, Colorado.

I didn't know at the time
it was even reported or anybody
knew anything about it

'cause we were threatened
and warned, really,
never to talk about it.

I've been collecting
documents on that

and people involved
in everything,

which also was mind-blowing
to me that,

'Wow! Why are all these people
out on the property

"investigating, PhDs
and geologists and...

"You know, wow,
I thought nobody knew
about it but us."

So just to know
this was being researched
was like

crazy information
in the first place.

What happened,
my parents divorced in 1973,

I think it was late 1974,
early 1975,

my mom meets a gentleman
at work.

He's getting a divorce
from his wife.

His wife has a new
love interest, so...

Um, they had three sons.

So they bought
the ranch property
out in Elbert County.

We would take the boys
back and forth to the ranch

to spend time with their mom.

And, you know,
I am only nine to 12 years old,
I'm a young girl at this time.

So it was like,

you'd hear the adults
talking about [LOW VOICE]
police being called

and cattle being killed and...

You know, UFOs being sighted
and lights in the sky

and Sasquatch creatures
and banging on the house

and, uh, paranormal...
All of these crazy things.

It was a really scary,
eerie time.

They had rewards out

trying to figure out
who's mutilating these cattle.

People had loaded shotguns
by their door, you didn't go up
to anybody's door at night

without letting them know
you're coming 'cause

they were actively looking
for who was doing this.

One of the experiences was
it was a Colorado day

and anybody who lives
in Colorado knows

in the springtime
you still get snow.

The snow gets really wet
and heavy.

You know,
but the sun is still shining
and it's nice.

So my sister and I
were out there on the ranch

just tossing the Frisbee
back and forth.

And we look down

and we noticed
that we're standing
in this dry dirt

where nothing grew.

And we're like,
"That's really weird."

Because over here,
It's like wet, heavy snow.

But here, it's dry.
It wasn't even wet dirt,
it was dry.

And then to get
the briefing document
all the years later

and to see that they are talking
about that in these reports
at the time,

and they actually measured
the circle.

It was 35 feet
in diameter around.

LEGRO: What was the absolute,
if you could just

pin down one thing...
It's probably
a little difficult.

Whether it was something
that you feel maybe

followed you from the ranch
to your home

or something that happened
on the ranch, what was
the absolute strangest?

The absolute strangest night
for me, we were out there
with the boys.

I believe it must have been
the boys' mother's birthday
or something.

So all of the adults
are in this little room,

about the size of this room,
playing games.

We were in the boys' room,
just the three boys,
my sister and I,

just being teenagers and kids
and I was the youngest of them.

Um... [CLEARS THROAT]
And all of a sudden,

the humming noise starts up.
And sometimes that humming sound
would get so loud

you couldn't even hear
yourselves talk over it.

And everybody is like,
"What the heck?"

Then all of a sudden,
power goes out in the house.

Big, the brightest light
I've ever seen in my life, like,

brighter than the sun
though the window.

That's when
that disembodied voice,

'cause all the power
is out of the house,

um, comes through.

And the only reason
I know what it said,

I have memories of it
being terrifying,

but I didn't know...
I knew it was a warning

to not talk about it
'cause we were threatened
not to talk about it.

And it basically,
in a nutshell, said, "You know,

"we have allowed you
to remain, we have interfered
with your lives very little.

"Your friends will be warned
not to talk about us."

It felt ominous, it felt evil,
it felt bad.

But that night, after that...

When we got home,
I don't remember...

Like, in my mind,
I don't remember, like,

how we left,
but I know when we got home,

I got into the front door,
just inside the door
in the living room

and I was on the floor.

And I went paralyzed that night.

And my mom and my sister going,
"Katie, what's wrong with you?
What's wrong with you?

"What did you eat?
What did you eat?"

And I couldn't talk.

Um, I just remember
like that last scene,

I don't know,
five or 10 minutes.

Yeah, that was the most
terrifying night, that was...

-Yeah.
-What light? What did the light
actually look like?

It looked
like the brightest white light,
like those lights,

uh, times 100.

-Yeah.
-I don't get chills very often
when we do these things.

-But we last night talked
to a guy named Mark.
-GRIBOSKI: Yeah.

And he has the almost literal
exact same description.

-GRIBOSKI: Really?
-And after a...

-Yeah, and the voices,
the whole the thing. The light.
-GRIBOSKI: Really?

-LEGRO: And there was a voice.
-Oh! That gives me chills.

LEGRO: And he was paralyzed.

-And he was paralyzed?
-BREEDLOVE: Yes.

-Oh! I need to talk
to him. [LAUGHS]
-LEGRO: Yes, you do.

GRIBOSKI: Another time, um,
I was with

the younger boys in the back
of the pickup truck
with their dog.

There's ponderosa pines
behind the ranch house.

And we were just driving around
the back of the ranch property.
We stopped at this

little outbuilding, we get out
of the truck, I don't know
what the adults were doing.

But I just remember
this humming noise starting up.

Mm... You know,
this low humming noise.

And all of a sudden I hear,
"The box, the box, the box."

And I'm, "What?"
And you look into the trees

and there was this box.

And it was lit and it was...

They're like,
"Get in the truck,
Get in the truck."

And then, boom...
[SNAPS FINGERS]
That box was gone.

Disappeared.

And so I'm like,
"I'm not gonna talk about this

"'cause that kinda sounds
like, what?"

But then later to find out
in the report

the undersheriff,
Bill Wall, witnessed

this disappearing box.
Not only did she say he saw
the box disappear,

but he said the tree next to it,
it seemed like they went
into the ground.

This strange box was just seen
at Skinwalker Ranch.

Um, that disappeared,
they have that.

There has to be
commonalities between these
high strangeness locations.

What is the commonalities?
Because they're all
highly magnetic.

I mean, that I know
off the geological maps.

Um, they ping
the charts as being
highly magnetic locations.

LEGRO: The ranch where Katie
experienced years
of bizarre activity

might just be a microcosm
for the entirety

of one of the weirdest places
in the state of Colorado.

The San Luis Valley
of Southern Colorado
is a stark contrast.

The valley is ringed
by the San Juan Mountains

and runs nearly 122 miles
down into the state
of New Mexico.

And it's here where some
of the weirdest activity
in the United States occurs.

We're not just talking
about strange lights in the sky

or even actual craft seen
in fleeting glimpses.

No.

We're talking
about the kind of activity
that really stretches

the boundaries
of what we term
as high strangeness.

It's here
where the cattle mutilation
phenomenon was born.

It's one of the most
amazing places
in North America.

It's the world's largest
alpine valley.

It's about 10,000 square miles.

Um, it's about
140 miles long.

The San Luis Valley portion
is the part in Colorado.

But the tip of the valley
is in New Mexico

and goes down to Taos.

It's a spooky place.

The variety and intensity
of unusual,

uh, phenomena there
and the reports

is unrivalled anywhere
in the country.

Everything from big, huge,
giant thunderbirds,

Bigfoot, elementals.

And there's a lot of, uh,
cult practices going on, too,
in the area.

Lots of healers.

Lots of brujos and brujas.

Quiet a number of times
I would get calls,
people reporting

weird, you know, balls of light
that fly across the dessert

and they'd reported them
as witches.

Anybody else would say,
"Oh, it was a UFO."

No, these... They believe
that when witches
are in a hurry,

they can turn into balls
of light and shoot off.

If a UFO hovers,
they'd call all their relatives,

so that they can triangulate

where it's hovering because
there's treasure underneath.

It's a pretty interesting place
with its own unique set of,

uh, sort of folklore
and legends.

ESTEP: The San Luis Valley
down south where you get a host
of UFO activity.

We have the original
horse mutilation story,
livestock mutilation

in the form of Snippy, or Lady.

We have
the UFO Watchtower, of course,
which is pretty unique.

JUDY MESSOLINE:
I just didn't wanna say
we need a UFO watchtower

you know, because of the story.

LEGRO: And you already
had sightings at that point?

No.

I believed there was something
else up there,

I watched X-Files a lot.

I struggled with the livestock
for four and a half years

'cause they don't
eat sand real well.

And I had to sell the herd,
I couldn't feed 'em anymore.

And I was working up
at the gas station in Hooper

and one of the farmers
was in one day and he said,

"You know,

"you need to put up
that UFO Watchtower

"you giggled about,
you'd have fun."

Uh, it was gonna be a little old
mom and pop business,

pull the tourist traffic
off the highway,
I mean,

that's what I had in my head.

And from the time
that we opened, we started
having sightings here.

ANNIE ROOF:
When I first moved here,
I don't know why,

I just felt this need to

research this place
and just read as much as I could
about this place.

I didn't know why I felt
that way, I just felt that way.

Which now, I kind of look back
at it as, I was preparing
for working here.

LEGRO: Now, do you have
personal sightings?

ROOF: So once I did start
hanging out here,

and when you're sitting here
looking at the sky

pretty much all day long,
you're gonna see things.

And I use the term "sighting"
as like an umbrella.

It's not an accurate term.

I think Judy has it right
with "UFO experience."

I think that kind of
touches on it more

because I've seen things,
I've felt things,
I've heard things.

Um, sometimes things
have nothing to do
with the sky.

I've witnessed, along with
people that were here
in the middle of the afternoon

watching it, too,

black helicopters disappearing
into the side of the mountains.

I feel like there's absolutely
tunnels through here.

LEGRO: What do you think
is down there?

ROOF: A lot of military,
I would bet.

A lot of military,
and probably a lot of stuff
they don't want us to know

'cause otherwise they wouldn't
put it in the ground.

We've had 282 sightings

documented once from just here.

And they're in the book
in the shop.

They have had documented
sightings in this valley
since the 1500s.

They have estimated
10 to 15 thousand mutilations

in this valley
and Northern New Mexico
since the '60s.

What do you think it is
about this area

that makes it attractive
for whatever is coming in?

The Native Americans considered
the valley floor sacred.

They wouldn't fight
on the valley floor,

they'd have their peace talks
on the valley floor.

Other say it's the vastness,

it's so large
and not highly populated.

Some say that there's
an extraterrestrial base

in Mount Blanco over here.

Could be,
lots of activity over there.

LEGRO: Would you mind
starting from
the beginning, or...

-DEEANNE: Sure.
-LEGRO: And also, how long
have you lived out here?

DEEANNE: We've lived out here
for about four years.

We moved out here
in the spring.

This mountain range
are the Sangre de Cristos.

That particularly morning
I was just sitting out
on our deck

and, as you can see,
I love to draw and paint.

And I had taken
my things outside and I was
sitting on the deck.

Beautiful morning.

And when you live out here,
you notice movement
around you.

And I saw something
up above me,

and I thought,
"What in the world is that?"

And this thing made no...
It made no sound whatsoever.

[SMACKS LIPS]
And it just rose up...

uh, slowly, and it was
perfectly clear.

I mean, there was no metal
on it at all.

It just appeared to be
perfectly elliptical shaped.

And it started to move over,
over the tops of the mountains.

Then it started to take off
over the valley.

And then when it got
to the edge of the house,
you know, where the roofline

obscured my view, then

I couldn't see it anymore,
so I just assumed that
it headed out

in that direction
over the valley and I couldn't
see it anymore.

LEGRO: Did it frighten you?

DEEANNE:
No, no. Not at all.

I sort of expected it
to just, you know, zip off

or zoom off
or make a sound or...

I wondered
what it was gonna do.

Do you think it's ours
or do you think
it's something else?

I can't imagine, really.

I've thought a lot
about it and I, you know,
I'm standing there

at my kitchen sink
because that view, you know,
is right there.

-LEGRO: Yeah.
-DEEANNE: So I look up there
a lot.

You know, to see
maybe if it has comeback
or if I'll see something else

and maybe I'll have
another chance,

um, to see it and...

You know,
try to analyze it again, but...

I just... I just can't
even imagine.

LEGRO: Cattle mutilations
have been part of
the public consciousness

and tied so tightly
to the UFO phenomenon
for so long

that most don't actually know
about the history of the topic.

During the 1970s and '80s,

authors like Linda Moulton Howe
and journalists
like George Knapp

popularized the subject
through their books

and various television
and radio appearances.

But even before then,

ranchers were discovering
mutilated animals
on their farms

and ranches
across the United States.

Fittingly, the first known
cattle mutilation case

originates right here
in the San Luis Valley.

And it wasn't a bovine at all.

It was a horse named "Lady."

ESTEP: The first place
that happened was in

uh, Southern Colorado.
And it was a horse
named "Lady,"

who came to be known
as "Snippy,"
was missing for about a day

and was found
in a very unusual situation.

There were a series of

round indentations in the ground
near the horse's body.

There was a very strange
viscous substance
on one of the bushes,

uh, near the remains.

And perhaps
most interesting of all,

the state of this poor animal,

much of the tissue
from her skull

and neck had been excised,
was gone.

When I was 10 years old,
I was with my mom shopping
at a Safeway and we...

[LAUGHS] I saw the Enquirer
and it had this "Flying Saucers
Killed My Horse."

That was a headline

and there was a picture
of this horse that had all

the flesh and tissue
and muscle and hide,

everything just
vacuum-cleanered,

withers from the neck
to the tip of its nose and...

The first documented
livestock mutilation
was Snippy the horse.

And I have her here
and I will take you over
and let you see her.

And it's quite the story,
it still hasn't been solved.

The ground where she was
was radioactive.

There was some slimy stuff
on the bush.

Their hands would burn.

Somebody else said that
his hand itched so bad

he had to go wash his hands
to get whatever it was off.

It happened on the King Ranch
over here.

And they attribute it
to alien UFOs.

I had one of the relatives
from the King family call me
two weeks ago.

And she said, "I heard
that you've got Snippy."

And I said,
"Yes, I have Snippy."

And she said,
"Well, you realize, Judy,
it was UFO related.

"It was a UFO that did that."

LEGRO: So, Judy,
can you described when they
first found Snippy,

since we're standing
here with her?

MESSOLINE: Yeah, all the hide,
meat,

everything, the only thing
that was exposed was the bones.

It was all bare from here
to the tip of her nose.

I had a young man in,
and when he was a teenager,

he was there when they took
the hide off this area.

And he said...

Taking the hide off, he said,
"Nothing was there."

All of the internal organs
were gone.

And they cut into the...

The skull up there to get
the brain, and no brain,
you know.

So, from what I understand,

the area where she was
was radioactive.

What about Snippy herself?
Was she also very radioactive?

Yeah, all around where she was.

And then they said
that there were some...

About 100 yards or 100 feet
from where they found her,

there were holes in the ground.

They think that
that's where a spaceship
had landed.

But they said that the bones
looked like they had been laying
out in the elements

for 20 years.

They were just that white.

Do you know what the timeframe
was from when they last
saw Snippy

alive and breathing
to when they found her laying?

MESSOLINE:
Yeah, it was two days.

Well, she didn't come in
for her feed or her water

and that's when they decided
they'd better go look.

The other horses came in,
but she didn't.

Uh, at that time,
how much property did they have?

Gosh! The King Ranch,
they were big.

BREEDLOVE:
What else was going on
around the area in 1960?

Anything weird in the area?

They saw strange lights.

That's what the family reported,
they saw strange lights.

And the lady who owned her,
her name was Nellie Lewis.

And she swears to God
that she saw spaceships
over there.

And, um, after this happened,
then she passed away.

I think she committed
suicide, but... Anyway.

It was, it was sad, you know.

It was just sad.

The things that are taken
are the pituitary gland,

the thyroid gland,

the tongue
and part of the brain.

Sometimes...

the innards, the organs inside
are taken.

Like the uterus and the ovaries.

It's just... It's strange,
just strange.

O'BRIEN:
Cattle are the closest match
genetically to human.

If you're an AB+ blood type,

you can actually
about receive

a transfusion of cattle
hemoglobin and it won't
kill you.

Another interesting fact, too,
when you think about is
the parts that are taken,

generally,
the reproductive organs,
the tongue...

These are areas
in the human body that

tend to develop cancer.

There seems
to be a correlation, uh, there.

ESTEP: And skeptics say,
"Well, you know, insects get
into the body

"of a dead animal,
get into the carcass.

"They will eat it away.

"They'll eat the brains
and the soft organs, tissues,
things of that nature."

But generally,
that doesn't happen in such
a short space of time.

That usually takes a while.

O'BRIEN: That's the first thing
I look for,
is cut hair follicles, 'cause

scavengers, birds, insects...

They... The flesh just tears
between the hair follicles.

You know, over the years,
I've come to find out
that a lot of these...

These popular notions
about mutilations,

like they're always
drained of blood, animals would
never go near them.

It's not necessarily so.

I did not have very many cases
that were drained to blood.

I've had a couple cases,
though, where we cut
into it

and the meat was pale,
the meat wasn't red.

And it appeared
to have been drained down
to the capillary level.

When I investigated
the ranch in Elbert County,

you can't investigate
that location and the things
that happened to me

when I was a young girl

and my sister as well
and everybody on the property

without looking
at the cattle mutilations,

'cause it was almost occurring
daily out there.

I went out and interviewed
another witness, who...

If you visit
the Elbert County Museum,
her family kind of

pioneered the location.

So they have, you know,
a long time in this small town.

And, um,
I went to Wyoming,

she lives in Wyoming now,
and interviewed her,

and she had a really
fascinating encounter

right out of high school,

and her husband
was out on horseback

checking the cows for calves.

He came across a calf
and the calf was dead.

The calf had four cuts
in a perfect square.

So incision, incision,
incision, incision.

The top of the fur was removed,
but the skin was still there,

but the calf was dead.

And so he gets on the horse,

he goes back
and gets my witness,

they come back
and it maybe took 23,

20-30 minutes
to get back in the truck.

By the time they got back,
the calf was mutilated.

Perfectly clean incisions,
organs removed, blood drained,

which... Coyotes
will jump up on the back

and just kind of tear at it.

This was clean cut incision.

No tracks, no sounds.

No... I mean, they're out
in the middle of nowhere,

miles from a road.

Nobody just came up
and did this, like,

pulled off the side
of the road and did this.

I mean...
So the interesting thing

about it to me,
because this is a memory I have

from when I was young,

is they had a sense
of being watched.

They felt it was really eerie.

They felt it was evil.

And again, no helicopter sounds.

No car marks or truck marks.

Only the horse, you know?

And so, really fascinating case.

Some of these cases
can be written off, of course,

as when the carcass bloats,
it fills with gas.

The skin will tear along
very neat, clean lines.

But when you see
a true mutilation,

what you're looking at
is almost a surgical excision

of parts of the carcass,
as if it's done with a scalpel,

an extremely sharp scalpel,

or something
even finer than that.

This one case I had,
probably the spookiest one.

The animal had been found

in a pristine,
fresh five-inch snow,

not one drop of blood,

it's right front leg was gone.

And when the rancher
found the animal,

the heart and the liver
had been expertly taken out

and then laid side by side
in the body cavity.

The spine was gone from the base
of the skull to the hips

and it had been taken out
in an upwards fashion,

which was impossible
because the skin was there.

There was no brain
in the brain case,

which hadn't been broken into.

It had a subtle smell
of some sort of disinfectant.

The thing wouldn't rot.

I went back four days later,

and the thing was
in the exact same condition

that I had seen it
in four days before.

That particular case
was one of the only cases

that was signed off on
by Dr. John King,

who was the head
of the New York State
Veterinary College at Cornell.

LEGRO: Tom Miller's ranch

is the knot at the end
of many strings

that form Colorado's
rich ethological history.

A second-generation rancher,

Tom had been noticing
strange kettle deaths

on his ranch
for over two decades

before he finally started

viewing them
in a different light.

Field dressed
and surgically removed organs,

along with eyes and ears,
is what caught his attention.

Since 1999,
he's lost even more cattle,

and the activity on his land

has become more and more
disturbing and bizarre.

The land where Tom's ranch
sits has an interesting past

that might help
to shine a light

on just what is going on here.

At one time, these lands

were inhabited
by the Ute Indians,

who have their own
beliefs and traditions

regarding skin walkers
and strange lights.

The Purgatoire River
cuts through their property,

and at one time,
the Purgatoire was referred to

as the river of lost souls,

due to a regiment
of Spanish soldiers

who went missing
after setting off

to follow the river south.

Trinidad, the closest town
to the ranch,

has its own sordid past,

comprised of death
and debauchery.

You know, the usual
Old West stuff.

But today, it's the mutilations
that bring us here

to the banks
of the Purgatoire River

in the heart
of former Native lands

where a door
we might not want open

has been kicked
right off its hinges.

So 16 cows or and or calves,

to you what
is the strangest thing

that you've seen out here
or aspect of the whole thing?

The calves... Some of the way

the calves have been left
are pretty hideous.

I think that little calf
that they gutted clear down

to the spinal cord
was one of the worst.

LEGRO: All the organs missing?

Everything was missing
except the spinal cord.

And it was fine
a few hours before.

And then the second one
would have been

the back strap off of the cow
on the last one.

Usually they leave that,
but this was a perfect

horseshoe-shaped piece
from the neck down to the hips.

That was pretty bad.

LEGRO: A lot of times
in the cattle mutilations,

you read about blood being just

magically drained and gone
and no trace of it anywhere.

Is that the same
with some of these?

I don't know
if it's magically drained,

but a cow has, what,
7.5 gal of blood

and there's never
a drop anywhere.

It's gone.

There are no blood leakages
around the calf or cow.

Whatever is used,
it's probably intubated

and taken out in that manner
because there's nothing around.

There's nothing left.

In fact, the animals won't
even go near it for a while.

They will stay away
from the carcass completely.

And then over a period of time
it just deteriorates on its own.

We had one cow...
That was pretty strange, too.

We had one that
was near the house

and Tom took it across the road.

We went out the next morning
to look at it,

and it had turned into
a pile of as overnight.

LEGRO: What?

Yeah, well, that was a calf,

but it was still,
there was nothing...

There was just ashes there,

and we never
could figure out...

-SALLY: Yeah.
-...what happened there.

That was the only time
that happened?

Mm-hmm.

So, they are different,
you know, I mean...

Whatever is or whoever is

or whatever is,
has its own agenda.

Typically, they have
the same trademark cuts.

Probably everybody
across the country

on the 37th parallel has that.

We've just had a few of them
that had been really different.

LEGRO: In the 1970s,
reports of mysterious

unmarked helicopters erupted
around the United States.

Many of these reports
were in conjunction

with either UFO reports
or that of mutilated livestock.

Theories abound
as to what the purpose

of the helicopters might be,

as well as who might
actually be piloting them.

Here in Colorado,
it's easy to speculate

that their origin might
simply be the US military.

After all,
this is a state

with a strong
military presence.

But the helicopters
are so often seen

in places of high strangeness

that it's easy to wonder
if they aren't tied directly

to the UFOs themselves.

Even the Miller Ranch
has had their own brushes

with mysterious
aerial phenomena.

Both man-made and otherworldly.

But I had lots of helicopters,

lots of helicopter sightings.

As many as seven in one case.

So that was back in the '70s.

The Kings still believe
that it was UFOs.

Was there a military presence
after that happened?

You know, any time there
is a cattle mutilation,

there's always
military activity.

The ranchers described
seeing black helicopters,

jets, everything
flying around their ranch.

Actually, when they see
helicopters around in a place

before or after
a mutilation case,

if they're ex-military,
then they tend to report it

because they think
they're being
victimized by the government.

And so that would be one
of the motivating factors

to actually report a case.

I had a postmaster helicopter
maintenance guy in his house

with his wife at night,

and they were
about ready to go to bed,

he heard, like, it sounded
like a tornado outside.

The trees are all
whipping around,
and so he went out and looked up

and there's this
huge helicopter there,

but it didn't make
a single noise

except the noise of the prop

and the trees swirling around.

It was dark colored.

He couldn't tell
if it was black

or dark purple or dark blue.

It was all dark, uniform dark.

There was no markings.

It was a military helicopter.
He said it was a big one,

like a Sea Stallion
or one of the bigger choppers.

I mean, he used to work
on helicopters and he knows

the sound of their engines

and that they have
to make a sound, right?

He said this thing
was completely silent

and then it took off.

He goes out the next morning,

and three of his animals
are mutilated.

There's quite a number
of cases with, uh...

Weird lights are seen.
Usually orange.

There are cases that
all obviously indicate

that the animal
was taken somewhere

and then dropped back.

Animals have been found
five fence lines away

from where they're
supposed to be.

Animals have been found,

quite a number have been
found with broken legs,

horns driven into the ground,

snapped off, all the ribs
on one side broken,

like the animal
had been dropped from a height.

And, you know, you never...

Supposedly, you never find
footprints or tire tracks
or anything,

any sort of crime
scene evidence.

I had a case where

it looked like a crop circle
in the grass had swirled down.

There was a mutilated cow
right in the middle

and the hair on the tail
had been taken out

and sprinkled around.

You seen any of the craft
that maybe do this?

Never seen a craft.
We have seen lights.

We have seen the lights,
but again, we don't know

where they originate from.

They have come
out of the river,

they have flown over,
they've been at the windows.

LEGRO: They've
been at the windows?

SALLY: That was
Tom's experience.

He had red orbs
looking in the windows.

Yeah, actually, I was
sleeping and turned over

and there were two...

They were about like that.
Just real bright red orbs.

And as soon as I turned
over there, they were gone.

But all the while,
and right after that,

I thought, "Well,
I'm dreaming, of course."

You know?
But the bed started vibrating,

just shaking like everything.

And at the same time, you know,

how you have goose bumps
on your arm?

Then those goose bumps just went

across my body
real slow like that.

And all the while,
the bed was just
shaking like that.

And so then they stopped

as soon as the feeling
got all the way across,

it stopped.

The next morning
he couldn't get up and walk.

LEGRO: He couldn't walk?

Couldn't walk. I had
to take him to the doctors.

LEGRO: What did they say?

They didn't have an explanation.

He told them what had happened

and they're like, "Mm-hmm."
[CHUCKLES]

That's what almost everybody
says is, "Mm-hmm."

LEGRO: It's all about
where the orbs will follow

-vehicles in or out?
-SALLY: Mm-hmm.

We have had lights
that have followed us.

We've had other people
that have been on their
way out to the ranch

to do things.

In fact, our insurance agent
was called.

He called from about
a 10-minute drive up the road

and he said,
"I'll be there in 10 minutes."

And I said, "Okay."

An hour and a half past
and he never showed up.

And I thought, oh, God,
a car wreck or something.

He finally got here
and he was all shaking,

he said when he
crossed over that bridge,

lights lifted out,

and he ended up almost
till 165 miles away.

We have hunters down here.

They hunt deer and stuff

and they have
tree stands down there.

And so you know, these hunters

go out there
in the middle of the night

and set up
in the trees and wait.

One of them came
the next morning,

and he showed me a picture
on his cell phone

and it looked
like a little marble.

But he said that thing
was just out there,

you know, in the sky
and then he said it would,

it was there, and... [WHOOSH]
It was there...

[WHOOSH] It was there.

Just moved just that fast.

But and he said I couldn't tell
how far out it was.

You know, in the cell phone,
it looked like a little marble.

But it could've
been a mile away.

It could have been
10 miles away.

-LEGRO: Right.
-You don't know.

MILLER: But he couldn't
figure that out.

But he watched it
for quite a while.

You ever see anything?
The cliche black helicopters

or anything like that?

Yeah, we have those around here,

and we don't think
military's at all involved

because we've got a huge
Fort Carson base right here,

and they run hundreds
of head of cattle.

They're not gonna come

and take a few
of our little cows

and create a stir
in the community.

As far as the ranch goes,

we know there are
these menacing helicopters.

We know that they were
out there investigating

and maybe doing some
of the mutilations out there.

There's no question about that.

So my question was always,

were they out there
causing the phenomenon,

trying to scare
the family off the property,

or were they
out there investigating

the unknown phenomenon
that they were aware of
that was happening?

And I am finally,
after all these years,

coming to the conclusion
that it was both.

I really think that
they were made aware of

that some strange things
were happening

and then they were out there
trying to investigate as well,

and maybe do some
of their own research.

There's a lot of debate about

what the source
of this phenomenon is.

And since its inception,
people have just jumped to,

"Hey, the UFO phenomenon
equals aliens."

So the extraterrestrial
hypothesis is interesting

because when you look at
the history of this phenomenon,

the first sightings,
the first landings

and contacts allegedly
between humans
and extraterrestrials,

they said that the UFOs
were coming from Venus.

That they were
coming from Mars.

Well, we sent probes
to Mars and Venus,

and rather inconveniently,

we found there was
nobody or nothing there,

and the conditions
were nothing like

the contactees were telling us,

and so the story
began to change.

And lo and behold,
at the moment,

they come from Alpha Centauri

and some of the other
nearest stars.

And I would bet my bottom dollar
that when we get there,

probably that's not gonna
turn out to be true, either.

This is a phenomenon
that evolves.

But I do think that
we as a species

have a tendency to wanna put
our own comfortable labels

on what this phenomenon is.

Rather than traveling these
vast interstellar distances,

these craft or travelers,
call them what you will,

may be coming in
from another plane of reality,

from another dimension.

We can say for sure that

something is invading
our airspace.

We don't know what it is.

We're not able to stop it.

And it seems to defy

our current
understanding of physics.

The word "consciousness"
comes in play a lot
with some of this stuff.

What are your opinions on that?

Probably, probably right.

I think that they are

in a different dimension
than we are

and that's why you
can see them one minute

and then they're gone.

But I think they can pop in
and out at will is what I think.

Yeah, I worked with cattle.

Uh, it is not easy

to kill a 2,000-pound bull.

It can't be college kids
pulling a prank.

To get that thing

and to cut it up
with such precision

and not spill any blood,

be able to, you know,
leave a pristine crime scene,

these are really
slick operators
that are doing this.

But I think there's
multiple groups of humans,

for various reasons,

are perpetrating these cases

and they're piggybacking
on other cases.

It's almost like there's
an action-reaction.

It seems like the government
is involved on several levels,

but one level is monitoring
the other groups,

and that's where
the helicopters come in.

There is, at the core
of the phenomenon,

about 2%, I'd say maybe three,

there is
a high strange perpetrator

that are doing the ones
you just can't explain.

But that's, what,
one or two cases
out of 100.

You know, you'll have that
really mind-numbing case

that just, you know, even me,

as hardboiled
as I am about it,

I've had a couple
of cases that, you know,
kept me up at night.

Just like
any of the phenomenon,

a lot of it you can,
even with orbs

and things like that,
it's dust, it's bugs, it's...

You can explain away some of it,

but you still are left
with these really
high strangeness cases

that just don't make any sense.

So, you know,
just enough to keep you going.

You know, what is this?

You know, and especially when
you're getting to these noises,

the disappearing boxes
and this.

It's almost as if that
high magnetism open...

It either allows us to be able
to experience the phenomenon

or it's allowing some sort of
open doorway or something

where these things
are coming in and out.

I don't know.

When I first found it,
it was real smooth.

-Just all the way
clear up to there.
-Did it start up here?

Yeah, and it looked, well,
kind of like those other cuts,

and it was just...

LEGRO: When we
started on this journey,

Colorado seemed to be
something far different to me,

a beautiful, rugged,
wild land

that in some places
still offered a glimpse

into our not-so-distant past.

The reality is, though,
I found a place where

UFO sightings are abundant,

and seemingly take on
a more sinister undercurrent

due to the cattle mutilation
phenomena.

It's a place where encounters
are had with strange lights,

craft, bizarre boxes,
voices from beyond

and probably countless things
we've yet to even hear about.

Sometimes this array
of paranormal entities

intersect in strange ways.

Ways that begin
to push the boundaries

of thinking of the UFOs

as simply visitors
from outer space.

But if not that,
then what are they?

And why are they present

in the places they're found?

I mean, do you
have any theories

on why they're coming
and doing this to your cattle?

SALLY: We've heard
from other people, like,

think of some
of the other investigators

that have been out there.

Apparently, there is only one
chromosomic difference,

just like between
pigs and humans,

and cows and humans.

Some say, well,
they're using that DNA

to create a superior race

or to help erase
or a planetary people survive

if their planets
have been destroyed, et cetera.

I mean, there are all kinds
of speculative reasons why.

They do know, though,
that the DNA

is very closely related
to human DNA.

We've had every researcher
around has been here.

We had the doctor that is a head

of the veterinary school
at Fort Collins.

He's been here,
he's analyzed everything.

LEGRO: So he would
go up to each carcass

as he came over
and there would be radiation...

They would bring equipment
with them, they would bring
Geiger counters.

They would bring different
kind of computers monitoring.

Did they... I mean,
what did they find in the soil?

Anything they could identify?

The soil was some
kind of a meteoric...

It was radioactive number one.

But then there were some
minerals that generally come off

of meteorites
that was within the soil.

Yeah, that's what
he said it was.

When a meteorite falls,
there's a certain amount
of radiation from it,

and these cows had
the same type of radiation

or something like that.

SALLY: Yeah. I don't remember
what he said was in the soil.

That's been quite a while back.

They tell us that
the electromagnetic field

across the world is like 0.09.

So as they were going around,

checking for all kinds
of weirdness in the ground,

when they got
close to the house,

there was no reading whatsoever.

He said there are only
two places in the world

where they have found that.

One is on this ranch

and one is on
the Skinwalker Ranch
over in Utah.

So that was pretty weird.

LEGRO: So, besides
an ET hypothesis

or craft coming down,
what other explanations,

if you guys even
entertain with this stuff?

I don't think there's anything
else that we can entertain it.

If it's a predator,
a predator tears and shreds.

So there are none of those.

These have been verified,
cauterized laser cuts.

BREEDLOVE: Whenever we do
one of these shoots,

I think we wanna come back
with some sort of answers

and this is a very complex
question that has been asked

by numerous investigators
and researchers,

probably far beyond
our skill set.

And most of them
come back with nothing.

What I am curious about is,

while we've been
on this location,

while we've been filming,

you've been looking into
some of the correlations

between all these various
high strangeness locations.

So this isn't just about UFOs
and cattle mutilations.

It's also about the locations

where those things
are taking place.

Did you come up with anything
that connects the dots?

The interesting thing is that
not only do we have the whole,

we've heard
of the 37th parallel

where things are supposed
to be kind of weird,

we have that. So between
37 and 40th parallels,

you have Trinidad, Colorado,

you have Elbert County,
Colorado,

and then Skinwalker Ranch,
which is at the 40th parallel.

So there's that.

And then also, I found out
that the EMF readings

for these locations,
are extremely high.

They're all in the red.

Something very interesting
that we just found out, though,

and I'm happy that we're finding
this out before we leave,

is that at Tom
and Sally's ranch,

the EMF readings
while high on the map,

right around the house
are reading zero.

Flat zero, nothing.

Do the EMF readings correlate

to exactly what we're looking at
here with the mutilations

and the sightings,
don't know,

but it's at least
very interesting.

What is the ultimate takeaway
you have from the investigation?

A lot more, really,
needs to be done.

I mean, even if you just take

this one particular part
of the state,

you could investigate
every single day

and probably come up
with 16 different theories

as to why this is going on.

And really, are we ever
gonna find the answers?

Probably not.

But even just this
EMF aspect of it

is at least
something to start on.
