Get into it you through quickly setting up an open VPN connection on Windows OS X iPhone and Android

Normally when you subscribe to a VPN provided they will provide you with an open VPN client a piece

of software you can download and install.

Here is an example with I VPN you would just download that and everything would be good.

Generally you want to go with these because these contain things like kill switches and leak protection

which we haven't discussed yet but I will talk about shortly.

And those are good features those are things that you want but if you don't want to use your provider's

open VPN client software or you're setting up your own VPN server then you need an open VPN client for

10

the operating system that you are going to run it on.

But before we look at the software let's have a look at the configuration files for the software for

12

all open VPN clients.

You will need a client configuration file that is usually provided to you by the VPN provider.

If they don't provide one then it may be that they don't want you to use anything but their software

15

which would be a problem.

So for this particular provider you can see here we can download the config files and then you can use

it with your own open VPN client software.

So if I download this I can demo what sort of things are in here and in this particular one is a collection

of oh the p n files and that's all it's just OVP and files.

Now if I open this or we can see here is essentially the configuration for how it will configure that

client.

So it has a lot of obvious stuff here like the cyphers that is using the compression that it's using

and this one also includes within it the service certificate.

And if we go down we know that because it's the c a c o t.

And if we go down here we can all also see the tailless orthe union here and that's all they provide

in this one.

Now here is what another VPN provider provides.

So just to sort of illustrate the differences to what you can possibly get.

So you can see here we've got another v p n file.

As I opened this room and we've got similar sort of things this one's actually got more detail about

different things.

But we've got our preferred encryption the domain name the ports of protocols.

Now what this one also has is you see how instead of having the server certificate here it's actually

just declaring them there.

And sometimes there's also another file called t a dot key which you sure you

So those are all the possible config files that you will get but usually you will get an Ovi PC and

So what do we do with these config files.

Well obviously we need the software to run these config files on.

So here we are at open VPN and you can see here we can download the various clients here but no don't

They are an annoying red herring.

Start with windows we come here to this you r l which is actually at open VPN dot net and we download

the latest version whether it be 64 or 32 bit or you can obviously download the source code and compile

it yourself.

Once you download it you want to verify the signature and then install it it's a standard install.

Once it is installed on Windows you will find it will exist in a directory.

This one is program files open VPN and we are looking for the config file.

Now remember these config files are talking about where what you want to do is you want to copy what

you have been given.

So in this case let's just copy these and these need to go into this kohm fig directory.

We connect to the ones we want to connect to.

We can edit the config which is simply a case of editing in a text file which is fine and the other

Or maybe you want to use some sort of proxy just to get out and that's it.

So then all you do is connect disconnect and you can view the log.

You can also use iTunes as well to use Dropbox upload the config file to your Dropbox account on the

iPhone open Dropbox and simply select the config file.

Then you click on the code which looks like a square with an arrow pointing to the top right corner

tap on the open icon and then tap open an open VPN to email send the config file to an email address

that is associated with this device obviously.

Open the email and tap on the icon of the configuration file in your email.

Choose the option open in open VPN.

What do you do if your service provider does not provide a config file or in that case it probably means

they don't want you to connect by anything other than their own software see probably want to avoid
