was a sense of shock here

martial law was implemented

suddenly there were checkpoints all over
the country people are very anxious very

jumpy

and of course immediately many Ukrainians
began to flee the the country at this point

more than four
million Ukrainians

have fled their country

but for those who have stayed
and are not in areas that are under.

Russian occupation were
seeing shops reopening

restaurants reopening
people taking their children.

Back to playgrounds
people using public transport

and it's as if they want to make their lives
as normal as possible in this situation

almost as a point of pride hmm.

That's very interesting.

And Ukraine in fact has been doing an

is there still in the the Ukrainian people.

Well Lana on the one hand you have this
sense of anxiety I think particularly coming

from government leaders like president
zelensky and also military officers saying

you know we still don't have
the weapons that we need.

To win this war and of course
there's also a real sense of.

Of pain and grief

looking at some of the atrocities that
have when committed against civilians.

People who seem to have been murdered
execution style with their hands behind their

back

and allegations of multiple allegations of
rape I mean we just have to imagine how we

would feel.

If that happened
in our own country

on the other hand though

when we speak to most Ukrainians they do
seem to be very optimistic very buoyant now

perhaps it's partly
about military successes

just in the last
week for instance.

Ukraine says that it managed
to take out the flagship

of Russia's black sea fleet Russia
says that it was it was sunk but it doesn't

acknowledge that
Ukraine was involved

and and and also remember that
when you talk to many Ukrainians

for them this isn't just a war about
territory it say seems to be about ideas

they talk about democracy they talk about
freedom so perhaps that sense of optimism

and buoyancy

also comes from their feeling

that they're on

they're on the
right side of history.

Optimism and buoyancy

but also we hear
these increasingly.

Of.

Almost desperate plays

more assistance from their allies.

grateful they are to the u s
for the help they've received

but if you talk to people in the military
they'll also say what we really need to do

is somehow take on

Russia in the skies

and there are two things that they keep on
repeating when they talk when they talk to

US

they want fighter jets

and they want modern
air defense systems.
