you know what they're doing is--

is something they really

disgusted was
the last feeling that I had.

Disgusted.

I would feel extremely small
and vulnerable

and feel like I would have

to do something
that I wasn't comfortable doing.

I felt like I was lost
in this world

that I would never get out of.

I felt swappable,
interchangeable.

It got a little weird.

I felt like
it was almost pimping.

You have a man that was living

in a multimillion-dollar
mansion,

having million-dollar parties.

But the girls that made him
that success,

we were disposable.

That's how we felt.

It wasn't just hefner's buddies,
his friends, the big vips.

It was hefner himself.

I never heard him
say on television,

"it's okay to do it
when the girl hasn't said yes,"

but he was doing it.

They were not giving
full consent.

Typically, if someone is known

for dating
vulnerable populations,

we call that out
for what it is, right?

Looking back now,
hef was a predator.

He was a predator.

my name is hugh hefner.

I'm editor-publisher
of "playboy" magazine.

When hugh hefner was just 27,
he fashioned himself and playboy

as the face
of sexual liberation.

Playboy is one of the most
famous brand names in the world.

I would like to be remembered
as somebody

who played some positive part

in changing the social-sexual
values of my time.

I believe that hef pulled
one over on the whole world.

The fantasy of playboy
that he created

did not allow for the consent
of the women.

When it came
to hefner's buddies,

you had to keep
those secrets quiet.

-What have you got for free?
-[laughs]

when you get someone
that powerful,

anything could happen.
Anything.

The people
who were really there--

they're the ones who know
the real truth.

I want to be a voice
for the women

that suffered the most
at his hands.

I could have left that world
thinking he was a great guy,

being able to say to people,

he was never inappropriate
with me.

He, you know, paid us well.

Some doors that maybe I never
would've stood before, opened,

but I can't say that.

I decided to tell in detail
about the hefner rape.

[voice breaking]
I hate that word,

but there is no other way
to describe it.

Women who go through this

feel that
they'll be "stigmatized"

or thought of differently.

It's why they don't talk
about it.

That's why they don't tell.
Sometimes never.

It took me years. Years.

I was raised in alabama,

just a very rural area
on a farm.

My parents were almost
cult-like with their religion.

The church of christ,

anything to do with sex
or your private parts

was just completely,
completely off the table.

We weren't allowed
to wear shorts.

I remember I invited some
people over to go swimming.

I cut my pants off
to the knees,

and my mom came home,
and I got--

she beat the hell out of me,

called me every name
in the book,

that, you know, I was a whore.

And, um, you know...
Just...The sh--shame, shaming.

When I was little,

I just remember
my grandfather--

he would take me into the woods,
and...

Mm.

And then he would--he would
take his, um, his pants off,

and, um, he would rape me,

and I remember when I was 8,

he said, "well, don't you ever
tell your mother

because she will kill you
if you tell her."

so when I left home at 15,
I got a job.

I was determined to get
my little brother

out of that home
and to come live with me.

I felt like he was
in an abusive situation as well.

I kept getting approached
to do modeling jobs,

and I realized I can make,
you know,

some good money doing this.

It was weird to me
to be valued for my beauty

because I'd never felt pretty
at all.

One photographer
that I met said,

"would you please
consider modeling

for me to send in some pictures
to 'playboy'?"

and I did do
bathing suit modeling,

and they sent in
some test shots to "playboy,"

and "playboy" wrote back
and said,

"oh, yeah, we--we would love
to see more of this girl."

I did believe that what
I was doing was wrong,

but I thought, you know,
god's gonna forgive me.

I need this opportunity,

and I'll--I'll never be able
to make this kind of money.

This is my "playboy" test shoot.

I was scared to death

and was so thankful

I had so much hair
to hide behind.

I wasn't 18 when I started.

When the centerfold came out,
I was 18

because they had to wait
until I turned 18.

"turn-ons--diamonds and furs,

vintage champagne,
faster horses,

traveling and going home."

I'll tell you, I was highly
coached on this data sheet

on sounding
fast and racy and sexy.

[birds chirping]

in 1983, I was staying
at the playboy mansion.

It was that time of the year

where somebody's gonna
be chosen soon

for playmate of the year.

It was all very intimidating
and really new.

I felt safe in my room,
and that's where I stayed.

With hef, he was telling me,

"susie, I've heard
that you're nervous

and that you've been
staying in your room,

but I want you to know
it's safe here,

and I want you to know that
you can do anything you want.

If there's anything
you want to experiment with,

then you just need
to let us know

because we want you
to be safe."

that was kind, and I did.

I felt safe at that moment.

Me and another
playmate of the month

were in a bedroom
down the hall from hef's,

and of course we were talking
about playmate of the year.

And she's like, you know, "well,
if you're so worried about it,

then why don't you just walk
down the hall and talk to hef?"

she literally pushed me
out the door of the bedroom

and towards his bedroom
down the hall.

And then I knocked on the door,
and he said, "who is it?"

and I said, "it's susie.
Susie scott."

and he said,
"susie, come--come in."

and I'm like, oh, good.
I'm not bothering him.

He gave me a hug,

and he said, "you look
very stressed. What's wrong?"

I said, "oh, I'm just...
Got a lot of my mind,

and I wanted to talk to you."

I had my speech all ready. I was
gonna ask him, you know,

had he thought
about playmate of the year,

and to tell him, you know,

I would commit myself
as a spokesman,

and I'm very good at it
and well-read,

even though I didn't finish
even 10th grade.

He goes, "well, let me just give
you something to calm you down."

and he gave me a pill
and a soda, and I just took it,

not thinking much about it.

You know, at first, it didn't
dawn on me that it was a drug.

You know, at first,
you're thinking,

somebody's giving you
a tylenol or an advil.

And then I thought, okay,
what did I just take?

I didn't even ask.

I don't remember laying down.

I don't remember if I even
said anything to him

about playmate of the year.

I woke up with him on top of me.

He was naked,
and my, um, pants were off.

My pajama bottoms were off.

I thought that
I was having a nightmare

because it didn't seem possible.

I thought I was reliving
the last time

that my grandfather had done
this to me, and...

Ugh. [chuckles]

this old man with his mouth
gaping open was a real thing.

He was a real person.
It was hefner.

He looked like satan.
He looked like satan.

He just looked so...

Cr--
just a creep, just a creep.

He honestly had the same look

that my grandfather had
when he did it.

I can't tell you.

There must be like
some common demon that gets in

and looks the same because
it was eerie. It was just eerie.

maybe I was one of the few
who he had not slept with,

and maybe he didn't like that.

I pushed him off of me,
and I think it made him mad.

When I went back to my bedroom,

all I wanted to do was just
lay back down, cry, think.

And I...

I just remember,

I've got to tell somebody.
I've got to tell somebody.

Know,

wishing they could live
your life, but...

I know. I know.

...Wondering how the hell
you do it.

Yeah. Well, part of it's being

very straightforward
and honest about it.

See, I think one
of the great curses

and--and one of the great
immoralities in--

in, uh, in sexuality

is the lying, the cheating,
the hypocrisy.

when I came to "playboy,"

I thought that doing
the centerfold

was kind of like getting
my power back.

I had it for a moment,
but it was taken right back.

This thing
that happened with hef

set me back a long way.

The next morning,
I was so ashamed,

I wanted to just die.

This whole thing--
it had to be a secret,

a secret that I had to,
you know,

like, see all the time.

You know,
I looked up at that hallway,

and you know,
I'd think about it,

but then I'd have to put
that smile on.

And when I saw hef, you know,
give him a hug.

He never mentioned it.
He--he--he...

The only explanation is that
he was hiding it from me

to make me doubt
that it happened maybe,

to make me forget about it.

But you don't forget.

Never.

Never.

I believe it was a quaalude

because I've been told what it
feels like to take a quaalude.

I just don't remember
falling asleep.

When I was there,
hef would carry the quaaludes

in a wadded-up kleenex
in his pocket,

and I saw him offer it
to people all the time.

See, look at how
he's hovering over girls

and just kissing at will.

He touched all the girls.
He would touch their breasts.

He thinks that he owns
everybody's breasts.

There was a night
that hef told me

we were going to go
for a little walk.

He took me down the hall,
and he got a key out,

and he told me
it was a skeleton key.

And I go, "what do you mean?"

and he said, "well,
you think I wouldn't have a key

that would open every room
in this house?"

and that's the night I learned
that he used it at will.

He opened the door
on a girl who was sleeping,

and he went inside

and sat down
at the bed with her.

And...At that point,
I'm just frozen.

I...
I didn't know what to do.

And she kept saying no.

I blocked it
the minute she said no,

and he continued
and forced himself on her.

I was standing there,
and I was terrified,

but I can't see it.

And...All these years, I mean,

does she think I'm a monster
because of it?

I'm sorry. I didn't...

I'm sorry I didn't do
anything to stop it.

And he told me, uh, when we were
heading back to the master,

uh, he said to me...
[sniffles]

"well, did they think
that they were gonna

come stay in my house
and not sleep with me?"

[sniffles]

whether they consented or not,

if he wanted something,
he would take it.

he rifled through so many
decades of young girls.

Reporter: How many girlfriends
have you had?

In total?
I have no idea. I don't know.

But you keep a record,
as I understand.

Yes, but I've never
counted up the numbers. Uh...

-Hundreds?
-Yes.

Many more than hundreds, yes.

Thousands?

Well, certainly over a thousand,
I'm sure.

Hef liked the girls young,

and he liked them
from a broken family,

or there wasn't
a father involved

because then
he could impress them

and, uh, control them more

because they would be
more likely

to want to please him
or please his friends.

I wanted to tell somebody
I trusted

and then have them
tell me what to do.

So I told marilyn, who was
the editor--marilyn grabowski.

She said, "oh, that's all?

Don't--don't let it bother you.

It's nothing. It's nothing.
He won't even remember it."

[scoffs]

and I'm like... [chuckles]
"but I will never forget it."

she goes, "just don't even
think about it anymore.

Just do what you know.
Do your work.

It's not a big deal."

[sighs]

and then I never--
just never talked about it.

I started getting
very, very, very thin.

I think I probably
got down to 90.

of course he sent mary to say,
"hef is so worried about you.

And you know, we would really
like to have you see a doctor.

And, uh, we just want you
to know we care."

mary o'connor was his instrument

for doing
all the legal things properly.

He had to pretend to care.

I was just completely depressed.

I didn't feel of value.

Many of the girls wanted
to tell you their problems.

I think I was mostly bothered
by the sadness.

Hefner enjoyed taking these
fresh girls and breaking them.

Dorothy stratten--this is
his playmate of the year.

She looks beautiful.

Look how happy she is. She's on
top of the world right there.

She was the ultimate playmate,
dorothy was.

She had it all,
all in one package.

To look at her now
in the footage,

she was so sweet.

I mean, you could not help
but love her.

Dorothy stratten was
the most perfect playmate

to ever enter
the playboy world.

She was...

Magnificent.

then after all these years,

what we have left of her

are photos of what once was.

Thousands of girls
come through it,

through the mansion,
through the magazine,

thousands of them,
and they don't get murdered,

but one did--dorothy stratten.

There are many documentaries
on dorothy's death.

Dorothy stratten, 20 years old

from vancouver, canada,

was on her way
to becoming a celebrity.

Brutally murdered
by her deranged husband.

"playboy" magazine's
1980 playmate of the year

has been found shot to death,

killed apparently
by her estranged husband

who then killed himself.

But that's not the whole story

of dorothy's experience
at playboy.

with dorothy, I believe that

hefner certainly didn't act
in a gentlemanly way.

Growing up, you know,

very skinny and no shape
and just...

[laughs]

-no shape?
-No, I was just--I'm tall.

You must have had a good year
and a bad year then.

-It all happened in one year.
-One year?

And that's when I was found
by "playboy." [laughs]

dorothy stratten ascended

hugh hefner's cult-like
structure very rapidly.

She went from a bunny
working at century city

to playmate of the month,
then playmate of the year.

And then the next step was
going to be a respected actress.

The magazine layouts were
an important stepping-stone,

and soon she was a guest
on "the tonight show."

hefner--he particularly
wanted her

because he knew

that she had the potential
to be a big star.

I don't know
of any other playmate

that I've had the feeling
would have been a big star

more than I thought
dorothy would.

She was in a situation
similar to mine, really,

with a man
that was controlling her.

Paul snider was a low-life pimp.

When she was 18,
her boyfriend, paul snider,

sent her pictures to hefner.

I was working at the mansion

when the limousine
brought her up.

She said,
"I've just come from canada.

Can you tell me
where mr. Hefner is?"

and that was the beginning
of the end for her.

She was into the system.

At the mansion, the process was,
you first meet hefner,

you have sex with him,

and then he passes you around
to his friends.

You don't violate
this order of sexual activity,

but dorothy--
she broke the rules.

When dorothy first came
to the mansion,

hefner thought that she'd slept
with patrick curtis.

His name to fame was he was
in "gone with the wind,"

and that's how
he parlayed himself

with all the girls
at the playmate mansion.

Hefner was very angry.

This is like a town
in the old west

where every girl in town
is the sheriff's girl,

and you're told,

"you don't want to mess
with the sheriff's girl."

he wanted her for himself,

could not understand
why he couldn't get her.

How did she pay for it?

With her being brutalized.

Early on in her time
at the mansion,

I and another security guard
were outside the grotto.

We heard her screaming.

We peered around,
and we witnessed it.

There was a ledge
around the grotto.

Hefner propped her up, and he
started to rape her anally,

and she was screaming.

after we witnessed it,
the security guard told me--

he whispered in my ear--

I should go back
into the butler's pantry

and keep my mouth shut.

And that's what I did.

You had to follow the rules.

You had to be discreet,
be quiet, carry on.

Nobody was going to come forward

because nobody wanted hefner
to come after you.

In the old days, it was like,
well, who are you?

You're just after his money.

That was always the thing.
You're after his money.

And they would side with,

you know,
the most powerful person.

There was an inequality there.

It's pretty sad for me
just to relive this.

And I'm sorry.

So please feel free to cut
and edit it out any sadness.

She confided in me the pain
she was feeling inside.

She was hollow.
Her eyes were distant.

She didn't engage
with you anymore

in that personable way,

the way she did
when she first came from canada.

Mr. Hefner wanted to stay
in control.

It's the old story.

He started out as
a very liberal,

modern-thinking writer

when he started
putting the magazine together

in chicago on his kitchen table.

And then by the time he got to
hollywood, everything changed.

He became a typical rich guy

using his money to buy women,
to control women.

Hefner thought that if he could
abuse her over and over again

against her wishes,

that he could get control
of her.

Dorothy stratten was devastated.

She was psychically destroyed.

It was too much for her.

Her body was breaking down.

She--she couldn't--
she couldn't help herself.

She wasn't sleeping.
She wasn't--wasn't well.

While she was waiting for
her centerfold to come out,

paul schneider coerced her
into marrying him

because he wanted her money.

He wanted that fame.

The marriage lasted less than
a year, and they separated.

Paul was clawing at her.

He was losing her. He knew it,
so she needed a protector.

She needed protection
from everyone.

Dorothy met peter bogdanovich
at the mansion,

and like many men who met her,

he fell in love
at first sight.

Bagdanovich told me about hefner
forcing himself on dorothy

in the jacuzzi part
of the grotto, in the grotto.

[sniffles] he told me that.
He told me.

Dorothy was naive
in many ways, very innocent,

believed what people said,
believed the whole playboy hype.

Found herself,
when she got to hollywood,

found herself maneuvered
by hefner

into a sexual situation that,
uh, she found very shocking,

and, in fact,
it traumatized her.

There was nothing in
the relationship with dorothy,

with playboy or with me
that I am less than proud of.

There is a strong possibility
that there's truth,

in that allegation that

dorothy stratten
was raped by hef,

I don't have reason
not to believe it anymore.

If you had told me that
before...My experience,

I would've said no,
no, definitely not.

I think hef
thought he deserved it.

[sighs]

and I don't know
what kind of mentality or psyche

would cause a man to think that.

But for some reason,
I think he felt he deserved

anything he felt
he needed or wanted

from anybody that was
in his home.

see how happy? Look at that.

Now, if that happened to her,
how could she be that happy?

It was--it was all playacting.

It was all his movie

and his script
down to the day he died.

It was not long after
that she was murdered.

It was so devastating
to all of us.

They underestimated paul.

Peter bogdanovich--
he wanted to date her.

He wanted to sleep with her.

Paul snider became aware of it,

and he went crazy,

even trying to jam his car
through the front gates.

So it became
this, uh, intense triangle,

and it ended in disaster.

According to police reports,

snider blew off his wife's face
with a 12-gauge shotgun

before turning
the powerful weapon on himself.

Earlier in the evening,

before the knowledge
of dorothy's death,

there was a new girl,

and hefner thought
she was super cute

and wanted me
to get information on her.

The day that dorothy was killed,
the day she was murdered,

when I finally had gone home,
changed, and came back,

one of the first things
he asked me was,

"did you get
that new girl's number?"

I remember thinking, wow,
it was just so self-centered.

It really was hef's world.

Hugh hefner--he never wanted
dorothy to have any power.

He never wanted a woman
to become so powerful

that he couldn't control her.

And it was so wrong

and so against what
he espoused to everyone.

I mean,
all about protecting women

and non-exploitation,
all that,

that was nothing but garbage.

We treat them, uh, as the record
will rather clearly show,

in a rather first-rate way.

he was so good
at making you feel

like you were the only thing
in the world

and the most beautiful thing
in the world,

until the next playmate
came along,

and he didn't care if you were
broken, uh, anorexic, addicted.

I heard about
the dorothy stratten story.

I never read peter bogdanovich's
book when I was at the mansion,

because at that time
I still had

my rose-colored glasses on
about hef,

and you generally
don't want to read things

about somebody you care about
that are negative.

But I decided to read the book
right before my book came out,

and it really hit me.

I always thought
that dorothy was somebody

I'd never be able to relate to

because she was always
presented as this goddess.

But when I read the book,

I was really just creeped out
by how similar everything was.

Everything that happened
back in her day

was so...Mirrored what was
going on in the early 2000s.

This is a poem
by dorothy stratten.

"it's here, everything,

everything anyone ever dreamed
of and more, but love is lost.

The only sacrifice
to live in this heaven,

this disneyland
where people are the games."

that--that describes it.

I--I've never heard it described
more...Perfectly.

[sighs]
it makes me feel really bad.

So many of those people
aren't with us anymore

by their own choosing

because they felt like that,
and they realized it.

They found out that people
are the games.

And one man got people to want
to play his games with us.

Hugh hefner held himself out as
this big lover, this bon vivant,

you know, this person that--
that every man wanted to be.

And here he was the lowest

and the most vilest scum
on earth.

I think he hated women
underneath it all.

I've spoken to enough people,
interviewed enough that--

that just seems to be the only
conclusion I can come up to.

People would ask me,
"why did you keep going back?

Why did you keep going back?"

and I just--
I just think it was complete,

you want him
not to have ruined your life

by also taking your employment.

And I also thought
he probably had cameras

in his room, you know?

It haunted me that
he might have a video of me

when he was on top of me.

I pray that
because I was unconscious,

he would not show it
to anyone because it's illegal.

My saving thought is that
he had to have destroyed it

because he's showing himself
committing a crime.

And he had tapes on everybody.

Anybody that walked
into that bedroom, disrobed,

they have a tape on them.
They had a tape on them.

They knew they were there,
and it kept everybody in line.

They were fearful of it.
What if--what if they got out?

What if somebody saw them?

I didn't get over what--
what happened in that bedroom.

[sighs]

I was disappointed in myself
that I...

Put myself in the position that
he could have had access to me.

I had tried so hard for so long
to not be the stereotype.

We all wanted to be
the perfect girl,

not the messed up girl,
you know?

[chuckles]
yeah, who walks around naked.

[scoffs]

but...I'm better than
what happened to me.

I'm valued. I'm loved.

I'm very much expecting
to go to heaven.

And I very much think
that I'm now safe in my home.

10 years
after I broke up with hef,

I had managed to get married,

and I was a mom,

and my life looked
pretty nice on visual.

I really loved being a mom.

[voice breaking]
I loved being a mom.

for a long time,
I spoke highly of playboy.

I could not have told anybody
the truth.

Every easter we would come up
for the easter egg hunt

'cause it was family-oriented.

I had pushed everything so back
so that my life could be normal.

I realized that
when it started getting dusk,

it was like something inside me,
a panic would start,

and then I-I would want
a glass of wine or something.

I needed to buff out
whatever was coming,

and that's when thoughts would,
like--like a rolodex of pictures

just going...
[makes whirring sound]

and things I had never
thought about for years,

moments that I wish
had never happened,

I'd get a flash.

and the only way to fix that
would be have a glass of wine,

have a glass of wine,
and then I could numb it.

I didn't have to think about it.

And I feel bad for my part in it
that I could actually

ask girls to go upstairs
and have some cocaine with me.

And I was--I was reeling them in
for him,

and believe me, I...

If I could take it back,
I would take it all back.

I had this demon after me.

I realized that I have
to take what happened to me

and make something good
come out of it in the end.

We can look at these.

In 2011,
miki and I started talking,

and once our eyes were open,
there was no turning back.

You wrote me this--this
incredible, touching letter.

What was so important to you
was about the sex tape.

-Yes.
-Right.

I told miki, you know,
I'm worried about these tapes

and what--what's gonna happen
to them.

He was in his 80s.

I mean, he could kick
the bucket at any time.

That's correct.

And then who would have
that key

to open that panel
and get to those tapes?

-We were working against time.
-Yeah.

We started a letter-writing
campaign in 2011.

She helped me write the letters.

And I think miki and I
were the first ones

to just in his face,
go after him about the tapes.

We orchestrated
this whole game plan

of if a tape got out,

we would hold hef
and/or playboy accountable.

[birds chirping]

you deserved an answer,
and by god, we got it.

Miki and I were the first one to
nail him on the--on the tapes.

We started
a letter-writing campaign.

We caught one of hef's lawyers
saying one thing

and hef saying another thing.

That's when we had him.

We had him, and he had--
he was forced

to give us his last words
on those tapes,

and we know what happened
to them.

In the end, we got
hugh hefner's last words.

Yeah.

On what happened
to the sex tapes. Didn't we?

Yeah.

We were told that
it would be taken care of,

that mary was in charge.

And if anything happened
to him, she knew what to do.

That she was going
to destroy the tapes.

I do have reason to believe

that one of the video
department heads had a boat,

and they put
all of those video tapes,

after they had been pulled
from their cases,

were then put in a barrel
and taken to sea.

That's what I was told
was done with them,

and I-I had reason
to believe that was true.

Even then, I didn't believe that
he would destroy all of them.

He just--his ego would not
destroy all the tapes.

No, no.

Even after all our letters,
there was no apology from him.

You'd get a pat on the back.

"don't worry.
It'll all be okay."

but no, he didn't
apologize for anything.

Hefner never wanted us
to be friends, right?

-Yeah.
-And so then...

Because you were crazy
and dangerous.

-I was crazy and dangerous.
-Yeah.

And now you've become crazy
and dangerous. [laughs]

now we're both crazy
and dangerous.

All right.

Miki has been there for me
through so many things

that I didn't have
the support of my family,

I didn't have the encouragement.

To find sondra
after so many years in 2011,

it was like striking gold,
really. [laughs]

all right.

I didn't meet p.J. Until...
I think it was 2016.

She asked me to partner
with her in this group

that she started,
the iconic women of playboy.

She supported sondra and I.
She put herself out on a limb,

and this is a woman who survived

a brutal rape by bill cosby,
hefner's best friend.

So it's the bunny mother,

the director
of playboy promotions,

and the girlfriend of hefner's.

It's the first time ever

that all of these worlds
collided together.

In the end, we're just damn
lucky we got out of there

as normal as we could be...
[laughs]

because not one of us
is normal. Not one of us.

It may be too late
to do much about us,

but that shouldn't stop us.

I'm sure with this documentary,

there's gonna be
a lot of women

that have come out
of the woodwork with stories

that we haven't heard about yet.

I hope that by coming out
with this that maybe other girls

can say, finally, you know,

they acknowledge
that there was wrong

and maybe they can let go
of that nightmare.

I think women are getting
a bit smarter.

I think they'll smell the rat.

Now is the time.

were suspicious of each other,

I can't really explain to you

how strong the feeling was

so I wouldn't feel bound
to be living this lie

apologize for him

Coming forward, I think
will be a cleansing for me.
