One of the biggest predators in Hollywood.

He's a rapist who had a really big TV show once.

An example of...

the complexity of...humanity.

They've destroyed Bill Cosby's career and life.

If they wanted to hurt him,

the first thing they should've taken away

was his medicine cabinet.

is un-rapeable, when you--

The worst part about
Cosby was he was a hypocrite,

and I said, "I don't think
that was the worst part."

Bill Cosby is the focus

In the last few years,

I feel like I have to have this discussion.

Bill Cosby himself showed me

that you could be smart
and funny in equal measure.

Cosby, 80 years old,

was convicted today of three counts

of aggravated indecent assault.

Mr. Cosby, are you prepared to go to prison, sir?

How do we talk about Bill Cosby?

There's all the good he did...

and all the other things

that I and many other people

believe he did.

and have the difficult
conversation about Bill Cosby.

And although lots of people said no,

thankfully, some intelligent,
brave, and funny folks

said yes.

There's some times
where you just have to show up.

Breaking news about Bill Cosby.

The comedian was just released from prison.

We love you, Mr. Cosby!

So let's start at the beginning,

when America met Bill Cosby.

...who's become a big hit
in a small period of time.

He's clever, inventive, fresh,

and something other young
comedians sometimes neglect--

he's darn funny.

A promising comedian
who has kept every promise--

Bill Cosby.

See this?

He didn't mention,
"This first Negro comic."

He just said a comedian.

He looked so, so innocent.
Handsome.

As when I was a kid,

I used to go to the movies every Saturday.

And I--to start off,

the guys that frightened me
the most were the monsters.

Yeah, he was so likable.

1963, Bill Cosby appears
on The Jack Paar Program...

And blew everybody away.

I think she'd have trouble

trying to punch out Frankenstein, you know.

Break his knee cap!

That kind of thing.

Good laughs.
He ripped it on that.

That's a rip in 1960-whatever.

And they didn't have a lot of Black people

on the Jack Paar show.

He didn't see not one of his
faces in the audience, like,

"Oh, shit, oh, shit."

So Cosby was kind of in a special place.

His trajectory from his first stand-up gig

to his first appearance on TV was very short.

A few years before

he begins to do stand-up,

Bill Cosby was a freshman at Temple University.

He decides to take up bartending

at this place called the Cellar in Philadelphia.

While he's there, he decides to, you know,

tell jokes to the customers.

He's like the most popular bartender.

'Cause he's figuring out
"Oh, this comedy stuff

that I did in class kind of
can translate over here."

His boss actually is the one who says,

"Hey, you should try stand-up."

Football can be combined with history,

as I found out sitting in history class

thinking of football.-

He starts doing comedy in '62 in the Village

doing sets in between the folk singers.

Most amateur comics are shaky,

they don't have their voice yet.

Bill Cosby had full confidence.

Pretty much immediately.

It took him only one year to go from

raw, novice beginner

to an A-level stand-up.

And people saw him right away

and was like "Oh, this guy is something special."

Our next guest has a unique
quality that made him a star.

Bill Cosby.-

I attended Temple University.

Physical education major.

Now, I hear some of you laughing.

Phys Ed, ha ha.
You're dumb.

He presented himself as
the nice, young, college guy

that you wouldn't mind
having come over for dinner.

Good evening.
Good evening.

Bill Cosby, with just one look or just

one reaction, could make people laugh.

He was so gifted as a physical comedian, too.

The sort of sound effects he uses,

the way he vacillates
between various characters

just through his voice.

Charlie, take the reins!

Cosby, I can't drive.

All of these things were really unique to Cosby,

and since then, everyone has imitated that.

He was just the best storyteller.

Car skidding back and forth.

Kind of kept me awake, you know?

Oh, almost died that time.
Yes, that's great.

To have a funny story,

to have people continuously laughing--

you know, that's what Cosby was a master at.

Every Saturday, we used to have go-kart races.

As a little girl, all I knew was that

whatever Bill was doing
made my grandmother laugh,

made everybody in the house laugh,

and made me feel good.

Bill Cosby, he's the...

storyteller who is clean,

but not corny, right?

He doesn't curse, but he still
has some edge to him.

I hit a tree.

Soon as I hit the tree,

I remembered in my glove compartment,

I've got nine old moving violation tickets.

That was a big part
of the appeal of Bill Cosby.

You could watch him and enjoy him

as an educated and cool Black man.

You know, you just didn't see
lot of Black people on TV.

And you're funny too.
Yes, I hope so.

The '60s in America

are just a tremendously turbulent period.

I have a dream

one day, this nation will rise up,

live out the true meaning of its creed.

The President of the United States is dead.

All of those things are happening at once.

So it's a really chaotic time in America.

You're not going to see any of this

in Bill Cosby's comedy from the time.

What Bill Cosby is doing
is talking about Noah's Ark.

Who is that?

It's the Lord, Noah.

Right.

Bill Cosby is saying things of substance,

but he's not making people uncomfortable,

he's not making people look at themselves.

What's an eye?-

He's not Dick Gregory.

I feel sorry for Willie.

I hate to see any baseball
player having troubles,

'cause that's the great sport
for my people.

That is the only sport in the world

where a Negro can shake a stick at a white man

and won't start no riot.-

1961, two years before Bill Cosby appears

on The Jack Paar Program,

Dick Gregory comes on the scene.

He's the first African American comic

to play to white audiences,

and he did something that people thought

couldn't possibly have been done before,

which was talk about race, talk about racism,

talk about the civil rights era.

When a Negros in Chicago
move into one large area,

and it look like we might control the votes,

they don't say anything to us.

They have a slum clearance.-

Dick Gregory talked about race

in front of their face.

Dick was sittin' on a stool
smoking a cigarette.

It was almost like

nigga, what are you doing?

The color line was broken by Dick Gregory

when he plays the Playboy Club
in January of 1961.

Playboy starts to establish these clubs

all over the United States
and the world in the 1960s.

They often featured up-and-coming

or otherwise popular but controversial comedians.

In other words, a stripper in the burlesque house

starting to, goes "Here it is, boys."

La-da-da-da, it's cool.

But let her do that in the
public park on the way home

and her ass is in jail.

And Hefner purposely brought on

African American entertainers,

and that was one of the ways in which

he was trying to express his support

for the civil rights movement and integration.

Dick Gregory playing the Playboy Club

and gets huge national press.

He gets on the Jack Paar Tonight Show,

opens the door.

He is, what they say, the
Jackie Robinson of night clubs.

So now, all these night club dates

are available to a young, Black comedian

who, ten years earlier,

Bill Cosby would have been on something

called the Chitlin' Circuit.

He would have played primarily Black clubs

in Black neighborhoods and Black theaters.

Dick Gregory breaks the color lines

right before Bill Cosby hit.

All serves up this guy perfectly.

Even though by the time

Bill Cosby made it to television

he was sort of the alternative to Dick Gregory,

early in his career, Cosby
wanted to be Dick Gregory.

There's an article

in The New York Times
where he's quoted as saying

he's the Philadelphia Dick Gregory.

At that time, a lot of his stand-up material

dealt with race and racial issues.

This the great mystery of Bill Cosby.

Something happened from that
New York Times article

to several months later
with different managers he has

that he decides to drop all
references to racial strife,

being a Black guy in America,

like, removed his race
from his comedic equation.

Once Bill Cosby decides

he's not going to be confrontational

like Dick Gregory,

the press sees him in a new way.

They call him "raceless,"

which white people often think
is a compliment. Hm.

What was important to him at that moment

was having a successful career

as a Black man in an industry
that didn't have many.

The number of gatekeepers

in the TV industry was tiny.

They were all white.

Bill Cosby in the '60s had to fit into

a very, very narrow definition
of what a Black man could be.

The term was "nonthreatening."

Dick Gregory never had a television sitcom.

He very rarely appeared on variety shows

because he didn't fit
whatever that white, Hollywood

prejudicial concept of "nonthreatening" was.

Bill Cosby filled that role.

He wasn't ruffling any feathers with race.

He wasn't protesting, he wasn't making

great political announcements about anything.

I think that was just very comforting

to all of these white people
he had to work for.

You know, they didn't want
someone who was going to say,

"Well, we need to talk about
the March on Washington."

I'm not sure Bill Cosby went
to the March on Washington.

One of the things that Dr. King

often said to folks in Hollywood was,

"Look, you do what you do."

Even if you were not in the streets,

you still had tremendous value to the movement.

I became interested in the civil rights struggle

out of a necessity to survive.

Because what you are presenting to America

is a view of African Americans
that needs to be seen

that Black folks were not criminals,

that Black folks were not poor, illiterate.

They call me Mr. Tibbs!

That is critically important

to the work of a civil rights movement.

I think his later-articulated

vision of Black progress

that could best be described as incrementalism,

which is get on, get your money,

and then help the Black people
out that you can.

And one of the best ways to do that

is by being the safe, compromised choice.

Ladies and gentlemen,

this afternoon, we're over on Paradise Road

visiting with one of television's top producers.

He's an actor turned writer turned director

turned producer, Mr. Sheldon Leonard.

Sheldon Leonard was like
a real mogul in those days.

First, may I apologize
for this very informal garb?

He had a big track record

of hit television programming.

So Sheldon Leonard heard about
Bill Cosby and thought hey,

this guy would be great for a new TV show.

See, even cool titles.
Very '60s.

Everything about it's cool.

It's got the whole James Bond vibe.

I just remembered tennis, pretty women,

and punching guys.

That to me was kind of
the essence of the show.

And at 12, you go, "That's cool."

When this relatively unknown
guy named Bill Cosby

gets this premier role on I Spy,

it's a watershed moment.

Television history instantly changed.

This is the first time
that a Black man's gonna be

the star of a series.

"I Spy" was an espionage-type

television series.

It costarred Robert Culp

and Bill Cosby as spies.

Robert Culp was a tennis pro,
and he was his valet.

But really, they were traveling
all over the world,

trying to undermine, um, uh...

communists.

Or whatever other threat there was.

Kind of absurd.

You know, in the earliest days of television,

many of the Black characters were kinda holdovers

or carry overs from the film industry.

You gonna put your shoes on?

No, I'm saving them in case my feet wear out.

You talk about a Stepin Fetchit,

Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, or Willie Best.

Chicken house?
Uh-huh.

What am I waiting for?
I don't know.

Me, either.

These were the images of Black people in film

and later, I think,

many of those images you could
see on television as well.

Amos'n Andy.

Lipstick.
Let's see that lipstick now.

Hmm.

Black people are represented

as childlike, slow.

You know, if it's a woman,

either you have the sort
of overly-sexualized Jezebel,

or you have the asexual, Black mammy.

I mean, it was just the worst representation

you could possibly imagine.

The reason a Bill Cosby stands out in the '60s is

because he's not playing these
old, stereotypical Black roles.

The images that Bill
Cosby was fighting against

weren't from the distant past.

Lot of this stuff was still on TV.

When I Spy first went on the air,

Amos 'n Andy was still in syndication.

Oh, what wouldn't I give to
hear a wooden doorstop again.

So you could watch this...

And in order to make the thing work,

all you got to do is take it like this.

Who thinks Black guys
don't know what a gun is?

Bill Cosby was this cool,

suave character who also was the smart one.

And that is not hypothesis.
That is fact.

Alexander Scott, the Bill Cosby character,

He's a Rhodes Scholar.
He speaks multiple languages.

He's a karate expert.

He's not just a spy, he's a Superman.

He's everything you don't see

in Black characters on television.

You all right?

Yeah, yeah, everything's fine, man.

My family's fine.

I was like every little kid in America

who looked up to him.
My parents looked up to him.

My father looked up to him from I Spy, you know?

White people in Southern Indiana were

inviting this Black man
into their home every week

and not clicking off the TV.

He had a kind of mystique

of a change agent,
not just an actor or performer.

He was a significant cultural figure.

No.

No.

No.
No. See, that's incredible.

Okay, in a Bond--Bond film--

excuse me, I have to tell you this story.

Say live and let die

We were filming Live and Let Die

with Roger Moore and Gloria Hendry,

the first Mrs. Bond of color,

and the first love interest.

So here I am coming in the door.

That hand is standing at the door, this cigar,

and he flips this body over.

That's not me.-

They didn't have a woman of color

to play my role to do that stunt.

It was a white man

dressed in a white outfit,

sleeveless, and you could see
they colored his skin black.

Also, when I was killed in
Jamaica with the scarecrow,

they didn't have anybody
of my hue to play that.

So I'm lying on the grass

with all those ants eating me up.

There you go, sir.
Thanks for your patience.

Been doing this a long time.

Never dreamed of it.
Never thought of it.

Yes, sir.
Be right with you.

It's while Bill Cosby's filming I Spy...

Sees a white stuntman putting
on essentially blackface.

At the time, it was in 1958 and up to '65,

if they had a Black actor
that that needed a stuntman,

they painted a white actor black

and had him do the stunt.

No, I mean black.
They painted him black.

It's a horrible-looking thing,

but they got away with it for years.

Bill looked at it and said,
"This will never happen again.

"I know we in Los Angeles.

"You can find a Black stuntman to double me."

When I came in, I changed all of that.

When I first started in the movie business,

I was working as an extra on Gomer Pyle show.

See, I want a 100% PFC platoon.

And Sheldon, when he came on the set,

and he saw me stand up as a Marine.

Said, "Who's that guy standing over there?"

He said, "That's Calvin Brown."

Said, "He look like Bill Cosby.

Tell him to come out.
I need to talk to him."

Because if he could do stunts,

he no longer working
for Gomer Pyle as an extra.

He working for I Spy as a stuntman.

Just that quick and just that lucky.

That's actually the origin
of how Black stunt performers

came into the business.

Calvin Brown was his initial stunt double,

and my grandfather also doubled
for him and Greg Elam.

All of these pioneers

that have gone on to have incredible careers

to become second unit directors,

to become stunt coordinators.

It's created an entire industry for people

that did not have jobs before.

If fact, I was the first
Black guy to get on a contract

on a live show, just for stunt purpose only.

Any time Bill needed a stuntman,

I was already available for that show.

That is--
I had never heard that story.

But you know, that tells me
that Bill Cosby was doing

what he could do to effect change

on behalf of Black people.

He made a huge impact.

So what the hell else we got to do?

Fantastic.
See, that's what I'm saying.

That's the Cosby I know.

And that's what I have to understand.

Human beings are human beings.

So to put all of that--
oh, it's difficult.

Mr. Poitier was very instrumental,

and Mr. Belafonte was very instrumental

in the progression of Black stuntmen.

But it was Bill Cosby who stood up

and took that first initial risk

to say,

"I need a Black person to double me,

and that's that, period."

I am a documentary film producer

currently producing

Breaking Bones, Breaking Barriers,

about the history of Black stunt performers.

My grandfather is Ernie Robinson.

He is one of the first
Black stuntmen in Hollywood

to fight for diversity and inclusion

for women and minorities in stunts.

I interviewed Bill Cosby in 2014.

Oh my gosh.

When I think about that interview, I beam.

It was so unbelievable.

He invited our crew to his home.

As an African American
filmmaker, and I'm a woman,

and I was a part of a Cosby generation,

for me, it was just--

it was unimaginable
that this could be possible,

that this was happening.

I had not really heard
anything about allegations

prior to my interview with him,

so I started learning about it
after our interview.

I was at a loss for words.

I was very angry.

I felt conflicted.
I felt let down.

It was a very serious matter
that needed to be sorted out.

So I think it was a better position for us

to cut the footage.

But I don't think that
I can speak to the allegations

because that wasn't my experience,

and I feel like I can only speak

to what my experience was like
in his presence filming him.

That's the Mr. Cosby I know.

Part of the reason why he was able to do

what he did for so long,

nobody wanted to believe
those kinds of things.

Nobody wanted to imagine
that these things were real

when we're thinking about somebody

who is respectable and clean-cut and nice

and has sort of made his living

as the nice Black guy in the room.

The boys are on a break right now.

Would there be any chance

of getting Mr. Cosby and Mr. Covaline--

Well, I see Mr. Cosby here in the company

of a glamorous young lady

who is probably our next important movie star,

and I wonder if we could prevail on him

bring that young lady in.

Isn't she beautiful?

Introduce this young lady
to the Las Vegas public?

What do you say, Bill?
How are you, Mr. Cosby?

Hey, how are you sir?

Is this your little girl?

Yes, this is my son, the daughter.

In 196d, Bill Cosby meets a college student

named Camille Hanks.

By all accounts, she was above his station.

They get married in 1964

and have a child the next year.

Well, I'm gonna have about 30 kids.

And my wife can't do a thing about it,

'cause she's Catholic.

If she refuses me, I'll take
her right to the pope.

Pope. If she says naw,
"Pope says you gotta do it."

Ha ha ha.

The beginning of Bill Cosby's career

moved super quick.

In 1962, he's a single childless college dropout

who people think is funny.

By 1965, he's married with a family,

and he's one of the hottest
comics in the country.

He wins Best Actor in a Dramatic Series

three years in a row.

While he's filming I Spy,

he's also recording comedy albums.

This is a true story.

Happened to me in San Francisco.

I had a tooth pulled.

First of all, Novocain does not kill pain.

It postpones it and gives it a chance

to build little pain buddies
over to the side, you know.

Every year, a new album came out.

Bill Cosby's A Very Funny Fellow Right!,

I Started Out As A Child,

and then   Why Is There Air,
and then   Wonderfulness,

and then Revenge, and then Russell.

Year after year, he was winning

all these Grammy awards.

He has, like, six in a row,
like, some crazy record.

Bill Cosby is a family man.

He's more successful

than he ever

could have imagined being.

He's no longer just the up-and-comer.

He has arrived.

Usually, part of the deal

with becoming a celebrity

is that your private life

now becomes open to public discussion.

But the way his public life was constructed,

we felt like we were seeing
enough of his private life

that we didn't need
to ask any more questions.

And I was real happy

to borrow our next guest.

We got him from one of the

season's top TV shows,   I Spy.

It's great to have him back
with us again tonight.

Mr. Bill Cosby.-

If you knew of him as, like,

the Hollywood creation from I Spy,

he was absolutely, at one time,

the sort of sexualized,

young, potential heartthrob.

The spy is here, Bill Cosby.

The spy.

I got a story here.

You mumble when you tell stories.

He's a mumbler.

The veneer

that Cosby represented

was always about progress.

Folks who were thinking
about what could be next

and what could be possible,
he stepped in that gap.

But the truth of the matter

is that the machine that creates Hollywood,

the machine that even allows
a Cosby to come forth,

is one that's rife with misogyny

and active kind of behind-the-scenes

and in-front-of-the-scenes
oppression of women.

It's just a time when,

if you are a womanizer,

you will be patted on the back for it.

You could be a high-profile actor

and go about your business
having multiple affairs,

and it never, ever interfered
with this public persona

that you have crafted with your PR folks.

Are you a man

of good character where women are concerned?

Have you ever met a man of good character

where women are concerned?

There was a culture that was...

people would look away.

"Boys will be boys."

Man talk.

And if we're gonna talk

about "boys will be boys" in the '60s,

then we got to talk about
Hugh Hefner and Playboy.

Are most of the girls embarrassed

when they first put these costumes on?

Not hardly.

I'd say about one out of 143.

Darling, I'm two out of 143.
I feel ridiculous.

I can't believe I didn't know this existed.

When my turn came, I felt pretty awkward.

But at least I didn't spill
anything on the customers.

Later, when I left the club,

the doorman asked
if I wasn't taking off early.

"Well," I replied, very grandly,

"- after all, I'm not a Bunny.
I'm a reporter

for the National Broadcasting Company."

"Gee," he said, "you could have fooled me."

And you know something, Hugh?

I must admit that secretly
I think I was kind of pleased.

And that's it.
That's Bunny school.

You should be pleased.

You make a very cute Bunny.

You know, the amazing thing is, though,

They are more chaperoned, really,

than in a television studio.

It has been said, even, that the atmosphere

is almost depressingly moral
in the Playboy Club

because there's no hanky-panky whatever.

And the furor that's raised about it is--

That's disgusting.

Playboy Club.

I was a cigarette Bunny doing cigars, cigarettes,

Tiparillos.

Playboy lighters, $1.05.

Hefner and Bill Cosby were friends for decades.

They became friends both through civil rights work

as well as through the comedy scene

at the Playboy Club.

We had a lot of jazz musicians, Gary Crosby,

all of the old comedians, Redd Foxx,

and Jackie Gayle.

I worked for this man
for years in the Playboy Clubs.

I worked there so many years,

I started to recognize
the bunnies by their faces.

We all schmoozed with them.

They were all our buddies,
you know, and then we'd all go

and have breakfast across the street

after we got off work.

The difference between a Playboy Bunny

and a Playboy Playmate:

a Playboy Bunny was the waitress in the club.

A Playboy Playmate was the centerfold.

Now, you could be both or either.

I was both.

I didn't meet Hugh Hefner until we opened

the Playboy Club in LA.

The big deal of the day

was when Hef would come out from Chicago.

Then they'd have the big cocktail party

in his penthouse at the top of the building.

He was so skinny, and he was
standing there with a pipe,

and all of these girls
were swarming around him.

And he walked over to me, and he said,

"Oh, Victoria Valentino."

And, typical of me,

I looked up, and I said, "And you are?"

And I made him introduce himself.

A typical Bunny.
Young, she's fresh.

She has a pleasant personality,
a fabulous figure,

and she works like a Trojan.

What was it like being a Bunny?

You look at my face?

It was incredible.

The 30-million-pound empire

built around the simple principle

that most people like
to look at pretty girls.

In this case, well-trained pretty girls.

Well, put it this way.

If there was equality for women,

especially during the '60s,

I can go along with that.

But honey, I didn't like making $50 a week.

You got it?

But as a Bunny, we made between $1,000

to $2,000 a week in cash.

I always felt used.

A lot of the girls didn't feel that way.

They were saving money for college,

they were supporting their children,

they were buying houses,

and I was feeling demeaned and diminished.

Now, when she places this one,

you notice that she is doing
what we call a Bunny dip.

We would dip, dip this way,

and we would serve this way, this way.

That's absolutely correct.

Looked glamorous on the surface,

but if you didn't have your ears straight,

if your tail wasn't clean,

if you had a run in your stocking,

you would get demerits.

It was a very hard job.

We were very well taken care of.

One man said, "I'm not gonna have

that nigger gal waiting on my table."

Honey, I went over there
and told the room director.

He walked back over there, and he said,

"May I see your Playboy key card?

Get the "mm" out.

If we got too fat and didn't look good

in our Bunny costumes, we'd get fired.

The bunnies had their own doctor

who prescribed us amphetamines.

We were being plugged into

a particular image.

You know, we were a collection of body parts.

Bill Cosby, who we associate as being

a very family-friendly, G-rated act

may seem incongruous
in the Playboy Club atmosphere.

But really, in those days,

nobody expected their comedy to be dirty.

Uh...

no, it couldn't be.

Ultimately, it was a classy venue.

They hired classy acts,

so it wasn't really beyond the norm

for a comic like Bill Cosby
to be performing there.

This is where looking back gets complicated,

because the definition of family-friendly

is always changing.

What counted as family-friendly back then

wouldn't fly now.

On the album "It's True! It's True!",

he does this routine

which now seems like

it might have been a red flag.

Ha ha ha ha!

I had that album as a kid.
I remember listening to it.

At the time, it just seemed
like, "Oh, this is funny

that something could turn
someone on like that."

You thought it was like,
I don't know, like oysters.

Spanish Fly is the name of the game,

and everyone wants to play.

All of a sudden, I feel very weird.

Can't you wait?

No.
Neither can I.

I remember as a kid,

and I hope I don't get
in trouble for saying this...

It was before I was having sex.

But I remember, I think even
on the back of a comic book,

you could get some stuff called Spanish Fly

and you put it in a drink.

It was time to party.

I remember him talking about Spanish Fly

in one of his albums,

and I was like, "Oh, shit, Spanish Fly.

Man, when I start fucking,
I want some Spanish Fly."

I didn't know what it was.

spent the last 12 or so years

traveling around the world,
studying psychoactive drugs.

Spanish Fly is--
it's an actual insect

that produces a chemical called cantharidin.

And cantharidin is an irritant

that causes a burning sensation

in the urethra when
it's eliminated by urination,

and that burning sensation can be confused

with a sort of sexual stimulation,

or an aphrodisiac effect.

Yes, it's a real thing.

That was accepting?
Like, that's crazy.

Ooh, yeah, that doesn't age well, does it?

The Spanish Fly bit.

Maybe it's innocent, maybe not.

But if you listen to that Spanish Fly joke,

the motherfucker tells on itself.

The album is called It's True! It's True!

That almost could be like a summation

for the prosecution.

And I think people just turned
a deaf ear to it

and just kind of, like, put it off

to being just a joke.

But I mean, clearly, you have the indications

that there's something wrong with this man.

Bill Cosby, it seems to me, has been leaving

something like bread crumbs
all throughout his career,

pointing to his guilty conscience.

Okay, this Spanish Fly thing is weird.

As a comic, I'm not going to judge

every comic for every joke they tell.

But Bill Cosby was still
telling Spanish Fly jokes

more than 20 years later.

This is from 1991.

Spanish Fly.

We knew what it was.

Spanish Fly was the thing that all boys

from age 11 on up to death,

we will still be searching for Spanish Fly.

That's right.

And what was the old--
the old story was,

if you took a little drop--
it was on the head of a...

Pin.

Ugh, why does he know the dosage?

On the head of a pin.

Oh, the famous Larry King Live   clip.

Lot of you've seen it.
But did you know

that he was there

promoting his book Childhood,

and Childhood   has an entire
chapter about Spanish Fly?

And Spanish Fly is mentioned
in the book 15 times.

And you put it in her drink.
Drop it into Coca-Cola.

It doesn't matter.
It doesn't make a--

and the girl would drink it, and...

She's yours.
Hello America.

And he's on   Larry King Live,
taking about the Spanish Fly.

"You just got to put just
a pin, just the head of a pin,

and oh boy, God bless America"--

whoa, whoa.

And Larry was like, "Yeah,
tell us how you do it, huh?

How is it, Cosby?
How do you do it?"

And he's just talking about how to drug women.

There was this narrative
that it always been there

in the undercurrent of his comedy

about drugging women,

that we had all mutually
agreed to never talk about

and to never connect the dots.

What Cosby, from almost
day one, was telling us

that he was willing to,

and didn't think anything was strange about,

putting things in women's drinks

to get them to do what he wanted them to do.

So when we fast forward,
it's not a huge leap to think

that what Cosby was talking about in the '60s

he was doing.

It was the end of '69.

September 6th.

I was under contract to Capitol Records

to do an album of my own songs.

I had a music attorney

by the name of Martin Cohen.

He was giving a party
to celebrate my contract

and his new wine cellar
that he had just bought.

My son, Tony, and I were there.

He had just turned six years old.

He was saving grasshoppers who were drowning

in the swimming pool.

Martin told me to go in the house.

His sister-in-law, I think,

was coming up the steps with a case of wine.

Martin was still out by the pool.

Then he, all of a sudden, was in the kitchen

pulling bottles of wine out of the case and going,

"Oh, this is a great wine--
oh, where's Tony?"

And I ran outside.

Found him face down on the bottom

of the deep end of the pool.

My beautiful wise little man.

So at that point, my life was over.

What happened with Bill Cosby

was just a few short weeks

after my little boy drowned.

My roommate and I went to this restaurant

right next to the Whisky a Go Go.

It was like the new cool
steakhouse on the Strip

called Sneaky Pete's.

I was just having a terrible, terrible day,

grieving, and Cosby came to our table.

He was chatting her up.

It was clear that they had their thing going,

so I was just sitting there,
kind of rearranging the food

on my plate and glass of red wine,

and I wasn't participating,

and all of his corny jokes
were not moving me.

And finally, he reached over

and put a pill next to my wine glass,

and said, "Take that.

It'll make you feel better.
It'll make us all feel better."

And then he put a pill next to her glass,

and then he did like this,
as if he was taking a pill.

The pill started kicking in,

and suddenly, you know,

couldn't keep my head up,

and her head was bobbing in her plate, too,

and slurring words and feeling nauseated,

and I have this memory that he reached out

and put another pill in my mouth directly.

And it just got to the point,
and I think it was me--

it could have been her--
said, "I want to go home."

So he said, "Okay.
I'll take you."

We were probably not looking very good

to be in public with at that point.

So we went up to the parking lot.

I got in the back seat,

and she was in the front with him,

and suddenly, we're going through

all those little windy Hollywood Hills streets,

and I'm in the back seat with spinners,

and then, all of a sudden, the car stopped.

There we were, parked kind of nose up,

and I looked, and there was

this--like a townhouse

kind of building.

And he said, "Oh, I want
to show you girls my awards

and things," and I'm going--
I didn't want to go.

I didn't want to go anywhere.

I just wanted to go home
and curl up in bed

and maybe throw up.

And got in this little elevator, took us up.

I think it was to the second floor,

and opened the door,

and it was no office.

And then she went over immediately

and sat on the love seat
up against the wall

and keeled over on her side, just...like that.

And I sat down on the love seat

and just put my head back.

And I don't know whether I passed out or what.

All of a sudden, I remember,
everything was so silent,

it woke me up, and I remember looking around

and seeing him sitting next to her,

and he was just looking down
on her and looking down,

looking down, and she was
completely out of it.

Gone.

And I realized instantly
by the look on his face

and bulge in his pants,
what was going to happen next,

and so I started reaching over and going...

I was trying to say something,
but what was in my head

and was coming out of my mouth,
it just sounded like garble.

He kept ignoring me,

and then he started getting
this irritated look on his face

because I was distracting him.

And then he finally started getting so annoyed

and I could just see this whole--

his face changing, you know,
this anger coming over,

and he stood up,
and he came walking towards me,

and I got panicky, and I stood up

and then lost my balance
and grabbed onto him,

and the next thing I knew, I was on my knees

in front of the sofa, and...

well...

He orally raped me,

and then he stood me up and bent me over

and did me doggy style and split.

And as he's going out the door, I said...

"How are we going--how are we
getting out of here?"

And he--
how are we getting home?

And he just pointed--
he didn't even look at me.

He pointed to the desk,
and he said, "Call a cab,"

and he slammed the door.

And the horrible thing is, I said "Thank you."

For years, every time
I'd drive down the Strip,

I'd have to look away
when I passed that street

because I--you know, my stomach would twist.

Here, he had taken advantage of my grief

and had no compassion, no empathy.

He didn't care.

I was just the sacrificial lamb.

I was collateral damage.
He didn't get what he wanted

from my roommate, so he took it out on me.

Well, I don't think I ever
told her the details

because I was so humiliated.
I was so ashamed.

Never told anybody.

I mean, told them that he had
gotten us drugged out,

or that, you know,
that he wasn't the nice person

that everybody thought he was,

but I never said
what he specifically did to me.

I couldn't.

I couldn't even think about it,
because you use the words,

then you have the images,
then you have the feelings,

and then you, you know,
are washed with self-loathing.

I never talked about it.

I never told anybody
any of the dirty details

for years and years and years.

I didn't know that there were other women.

I just thought it was me.

So he drove you to an office,

some sort of a place that was not his home,

and then, what did he do?
Correct.

Opened his fly and had me...

perform oral sex

and then raped me.

I think for many of us,

the hardest thing about
the Bill Cosby situation

is that we loved him for such a long time

before we ever heard
about any of the allegations.

It feels like new information.

But long before he was America's dad,

long before he was himself,

before we watched him
on Saturday morning cartoons,

before I was even born...

The guys that frightened me
the most were the monsters.

From almost the very start of his career,

Cosby is alleged to have been
sexually assaulting

and raping women.

He prepares a cocktail for you.

Yes, a bourbon and seven.

I must have passed out again,
because when I awaken,

I found myself on a bed.

He had his hand on the back of my head.

She says he then tried

to force her to perform oral sex.

I had ordered a Coca-Cola.

I have never been a drinker.

And that was when things
began to become blurry.

What I do remember next was waking up naked

in a bed alone.

I turned around, and there was

nobody in the room at all,

just him and I.
He grabbed me.

He had me up against him
and kissed me in the mouth.

And I just pushed him,
and I ran down the hallway.

I was on   The Tonight Show.

I was in my dressing room.

He opened the door.

He came up to me,

zippered down his pants,

and put my head on his penis.

When I awakened,

I was naked in the bed beside him.

I couldn't move or speak.
I felt paralyzed.

He flipped me over and sexually assaulted me.

And I had a headache,

and he brought back a capsule.

He wouldn't tell me what was in it

and was like, "Well, don't you trust me?"

Well, of course I do.
It was Bill Cosby.

He starting grabbing at my chest.

Then he started to push himself on top of me.

That's when I panicked.

I opened the door and ran out of his car.

I came to with him
taking off my underwear.

He pulled me up by my hair

and shoved his penis in my mouth,

and I thought in that instant
that people are going to find

a naked body in a canyon somewhere.

Even though he was like
the kind of center of morality,

then and all throughout his career,

it turns out that
just behind the curtain,

there was the most immoral shit
you could imagine going on.

But we didn't know about any of that.

The Bill Cosby we knew was
going through some changes,

like Black folks all over America.

Dr. Martin Luther King

has been shot to death in Memphis, Tennessee.

In the late '60s,

you have this shift in the culture,

and it creates the opportunity

for a new representation of Blackness.

I am--
I am--

Black.
Black.

But as the culture shifted,

Black performers started to shift.

Cosby uses this moment to transform his image

from late-night comedian to radical educator.

Black people have to go out
and burn up the neighborhood

in order to get the community
to see what's going on.

And this point is critical,

because it's Bill Cosby's focus on education

that sows the seeds
for the rest of his career.

And nobody could have imagined
how big that career would get.

When we turned on the TV,

it was almost impossible
not to see Bill Cosby.

He was our teacher, and he was funny.

And now welcome the star of the show.

Everybody knew the show was happening,

this show called The Cosby Show.

I mean, there was just no way to know

how much America would fall
in love with this man.

You started hearing these things

that this guy is not who he appears to be.

We all know Bill Cosby as America's dad.

What in the world
did you think was going on?

He constructed himself as a role model.

There is a time when we have
to turn the mirror around.

He became a cultural icon, hero,

not only for Black people,
but for all people.

Thank you.

He looked at me, and he said,

"Fooled them again."

And suddenly, this is

no longer a rumbling underneath the ground.

I have to ask about your name

coming up in the news recently.

No, no, you don't answer that.

It was impossible to comprehend, impossible.

It was just like...no.

Not Bill Cosby.
