It'd be completely awesome
if we found a water source

and some place where we can
actually make a shelter.

Nala, just, she just
wants to keep going.

I'm getting the lay, the lay of
the land right now with Nala.

We have to watch out
for these widow-makers.

I don't want them to
fall on Nala and I.

Careful.
Don't go under that.

Wow this is thick out here.

Holy (bleep), Nala!

Something like that,
that would kill one of us.

Gotta watch out
for these things.

They're all over the place.

So, I don't want nothin'

This is my dog, Nala.

She's three year old,
she's a German Shepard.

She's strong, she's agile,
she's pretty much non stop.

Nala was raised by
a friend of mine

who raises dogs for the
police and for the military.

She's seventh generation of
military and police dogs.

They didn't have a
ton of interest in her

because she was so small,

but we fell in
love with her.

Holy cow.

There's a lake.

Look what you found us.

We have an unlimited
water supply.

We better keep working.

There's a storm rolling in.

NARRATOR: Well into late fall,

conditions are worsening
in northern Maine.

Frequent storms and
the scarcity of food

announce the imminent
arrival of a brutal winter.

CHAD: This area has a lot
of nice straight branches

that we can use for
our shelter, girl.

I'm gonna have her
pull them to camp.

Help me save a lot
of my calories.

Come here girl.

Hey, come here.

Seriously. Nala, come!

Come on, hey, focus. Focus.

Hey, come here. Focus.

Help me pull some wood.

You ready, girl?
Let's go.

I see a lot of myself in Nala.

We're both outgoing.

We both love adventure.

Pull over that log girl.

Nice.

But, I think sometimes both
of us get a little out of focus

and my goal is for us to
build enough mutual trust

so we can rely on each
other 100% unconditionally.

We're gonna do a teepee shelter.

Basically I'm gonna put
together three easy poles,

stack poles in there, try to
insulate as much as possible.

We'll use a tarp connector.

So it won't be too sexy,

but if it rains we'll
definitely stay warm.

NARRATOR: Nala's service dog
heritage is instrumental

in helping Chad quickly set
up a rudimentary base camp.

And five miles
to the northwest.

JEN (off-screen): Bean,
are we going on an adventure?

NARRATOR: A scrappy terrier mix

is out to prove
that youth and brawn

aren't the only canine
qualities that count

when it comes to
surviving in the wild.

JEN: Bean!

Come on. This way.
I think I see something.

Who's the best girl?
Who's my girl?

What are you looking for, Bean?
Yeah you smelling, Bean?

Oh, Bean what's that?

Oh wow.
Did you find a chewy?

Oh, what is that?
Found a whole skull.

There's definitely moose in the
area according to these bones.

NARRATOR: Daylight hours
are shrinking as moose,

coyotes and lynx
roam the woods.

In the final days
before hibernation,

bears compete for any
final morsels of food.

JEN: It's the wildlife
that concerns me.

But, hopefully it'll be alright.

My dog's name is Bean.

She's 12 years old and
she's probably got a
lot of terrier in her.

Bean, being a little dog,

she's not your husky
pulling 50 pounds of logs,

but Bean excels in a
lot of small ways.

I've had Bean since
I was 19 years old.

I found her when she was a
little puppy, she was abandoned.

We've gone on so many
adventures together.

But she's getting older,

so if I could think of anything
that I would like to prove

is that older dogs are
just as good at surviving

and taking on these really
difficult challenges

as anyone is.

What have you got there, Bean?

She's really good at scenting.

Oh wow, check that out.

That's my girl.

Coral mushroom.

Good girl.

It's our lucky day.

These are good eating.

I regularly forage for mushrooms
so I'm pretty comfortable

with identification in probably
about 10 edible species.

Look at that.

What did we find, Bean?

What a relief.

We found our water source and
hopefully our food source.

Alright, let's go
find a place to live.

We'll check it out.

It's relatively flat.

Just gonna do a simple
A-frame with the tarp.

I'm looking for a ridgepole
for my A-frame shelter.

I need it to be
long and straight.

That's what the tarp
kind of drapes over.

NARRATOR: For the next 10 days
the three teams will attempt

to earn up to a
maximum 10 points

based on the success of
their survival skills.

Teamwork is critical.

Each pair must work together
to source food and water,

secure fire,
build sturdy shelter,

and stay mentally tough.

Earning a point
if they succeed.

JEN: You OK, Bean?

NARRATOR: And two
points if they excel.

If a team taps out early,
they forfeit the competition.

JEN: That'll do for now.

NARRATOR: After 10 days,

the team with the highest
score is declared the winner.

JEN: Bean, what do you think?

So far so good.

NARRATOR: As a storm
front rolls in,

Jen and Bean's
makeshift shelter will
hopefully prove adequate.

(thunder)

And over the next ridgeline,

a drenched goldendoodle
and her companion

trudge through Maine's fickle
weather and a mudslick bog.

DANE (off-screen):
This is sketch.

How about a jump?
You wanna do a jump?

Let's do a jump.

Oh!

That was awesome.

Nice job.

I wish I could say
"almost there".

Keep going, huh?

This is Willow and she
is a golden doodle.

She is going to be four.

She's a strong swimmer.

She can scent and dig for worms.

She's a badass true and true.

I grew up with golden retrievers

and definitely had my heart
set on getting one of those,

but my girlfriend of seven
years is allergic to dogs

so I had to find
something hypoallergenic

and a golden doodle is
as close as I could get

to a golden retriever.

But as soon as I had
Willow, did a complete 180,

I'm just like all
about doodles now.

What is going on here?

I'm sure I can do
something with this.

Oh a fire ring, holy cow,
OK, that'll work bueno.

Gonna keep moving,
try and find that spot.

I used to test myself a
lot more with sports
and climbing mountains,

and I've gotten
soft over the years.

I chose to do this challenge

to see if I still had
the fire in the tank.

I think this is it.

Lake access.

That's dry in there.

Is this the spot?

That's the spot.

Alright.

There's definitely no denying
the fact that Willow and I

have become pretty domesticated.

Living in the city for so long
and working 8 to 5,

sneaking out to take
her to the city parks.

It's a pampered and
softer lifestyle.

This is gonna be a
major test for both of us.

Willow, can you dig?

She's leveling my bed right
now, pulling up roots.

Rip it out, rip it out,

So my basic strategy
for shelter right now

is as simple as possible.

I'm just gonna do
a simple A-frame

to keep me dry on the floor.

Not the palace I envisioned.

I was hoping for
flatter ground,

a little more open area,
you know?

A raised bed on night one.

If this just keeps raining
this is gonna get real tricky.

NARRATOR: As darkness falls
and the storm breaks over head,

the teams each settle
in for the night.

(rain)

CHAD: This is stuff we love;
storm, lightning, adventure.

JEN: Here we are
waiting out the rain.

It's not ideal but
it is what it is.

Luckily, I got Bean with me.

It's what I wanted to do, spend
this quality time with her,

just the two of us.

NARRATOR: Chad and Nala
are off to a strong start

with their humble teepee.

And Jen and Bean are
in solid position

with their well
executed A-frame.

But Dane and Willow's
flimsy weather proofing

on uneven ground

betrays a serious
lack of experience

in a survival setting,

putting them in last place.

DANE: Oh, my God, I've made a
mistake, I shouldn't be here.

I'm sleeping in rain gear.

Oh, my God, and I'm still
freezing and so is Willow.

This is a nightmare.

We could not be doing worse.

♪ ♪

DANE: Morning.

Yeah.

We both made it
through the night.

Why don't you get
that one, yeah.

Positives today, I have a
little bit of water left,

it's not raining,
my dog's happy,

she cuddled in bed
the entire night.

(sighs)

But, negatives of today, I
have to put on wet socks.

And what's better
than wet socks?

Frozen socks.

I wish I could have those socks.

Well, I need to try
and find some worms
and grubs for fishing.

the humans need a daily
intake of 2,000 calories.

So Dane's best bet
is to aim for a haul
of four to five fish.

DANE: I got my larvae
that I'm gonna try

and dangle over the water.

Let's go see if that hanging
tree is strong enough

for me to shimmy out there.

Oh this one feels pretty sturdy.

Should be some fish coming out
of that cove, coming in here.

Oh I didn't even see you there.

Oh (bleep), huh.

You are trapped up here now.

Gotta get over you cause
I know dogs can't back up.

dog from being leashed up.

NARRATOR: While Dane and
Willow wait for a bite,

in a valley three miles away,

another team is ready to
dig into their first meal.

JEN: Just wanna get
this water boiled,

get some breakfast in me.

I'm glad I found these mushrooms
when we were walking in.

I'm gonna pop them in my pot
and I'm gonna cook them up.

Hm, it's actually pretty good.

Alright, let's see if
we can find some bait.

There's some minnows in
this little offshoot here,

so I'm gonna see if I can
throw them into the bucket.

Bean, can you come here?

Bean's pretty good
at finding them.

where's the fish?

I have Bean trained
relatively well

where I can kinda like point
to where I want her to go.

She's helping me herd fish
into my bucket to use for bait.

12 years together,

Jen and Bean have
an exceptional bond

with Bean highly attuned
to Jen's every cue.

JEN: I've barely eaten anything.

I'm getting progressively
more frustrated.

I've always been an
outdoorsy person.

I've been to Alaska,
Norway, Sweden,

and I've always
had Bean with me.

She's my first dog,

and she's been my best friend
for the last 12 years.

Honestly, I couldn't really
imagine my life without her.

If I'm having a bad day or
if I'm having a hard time,

Bean's right there
trying to cheer me up.

So, I'm just gonna keep
going and try again.

CHAD: Good morning, girl.

Hey.

We had a good
night's sleep, didn't we?

You're ready to go, aren't you?

Ready to go fishing.

Alright, come on.

OK, so we're gonna tie
it on here together.

I have this knot that I've been
using since I was a little kid,

and my brother taught
me how to do it.

I've been an outdoors person
since I was about 10 years old.

My brother and I would
survive together

building forts, shelters.

Unfortunately he passed
away from a heart condition.

I was only 18, and
he was just 19.

His name was Jonathan.

And every time I tie
the knot I think of him.

As two kids, we were
playing together,

surviving and catching
fish just like this.

All those years of learning
being outdoors with my brother

taught me how
important it can be

to have a partner you
can trust in the wild,

now I'm hoping Nala and I can
build that kind of partnership.

She has something
that I can use.

Come, girl.

You're my secret weapon,
yes you are.

I'm gonna use her
hair and make a fly.

OK, girl, ready to go fishing?

she scares everything away.

days into the challenge,

this team's lack of
cohesion has cost Chad

needed calories.

CHAD: Those are definitely
rain clouds coming in.

It's gonna storm.

And the top of my
shelter's opened up, which.

we didn't catch nothing,

but the main thing now
is to stay dry.

(thunder)

NARRATOR: With another ominous
weather front overhead,

Chad knows he'll soon have
to focus his depleted energies

on rebuilding his shelter
despite his gnawing hunger.

CHAD (off-screen):
Alright, now we're getting wet.

Oh no.

Holy cow the wind.

Oh. We have this massive
storm coming in on us right now.

Nala's worried and I'm worried.

There's tons of lightning.

Really need to get our
permanent shelter done

or we'll never make it.

(thunder and lightning)

DANE (off-screen):
It's definitely cold,
it rained all night.

I'm freezing,
teeth still chattering.

NARRATOR: A few miles away

during a reprieve
from the storm,

Dane finds himself in an
equally undernourished state.

DANE: I'm really hungry,

so I'm gonna
check my fishing rod.

So my fishing strategy
is pretty much trying
to get to deeper water.

And I still don't have any fish.

If there's no fish
on it this time,

I'm taking them out of there.

No luck.

This is not easy.

I feel myself slowly
starving out here

and one fish could
give me the energy

to just like keep
pressing on.

Another big old fishing pole.

This one's nicer.

It's a fault of mine that
I can't enjoy the moment,

like any time I climb
a mountain, I hate it,

and then next thing you know,
three months later like,

"God, climbing that
mountain was super fun.

Let's climb another one."

And then you're out there

and you're like what
the hell am I doing.

I hate this, you know that.

Willow lives life every
second to the fullest.

When I see her just
having a great time,

it definitely helps my spirit,
no doubt about that.

a hard earned fire

yet they're still
lacking self confidence

as they battle the elements
and one very empty stomach.

DANE (off-screen): Willow spent
three hours while I was trying
to get the (bleep) fire started,

just sitting there staring
at me in the dark.

I can't watch her not be happy.

It just sucks.

We're not gonna make
it at this rate.

♪ ♪

JEN: Hello, Bean.

So I'm gonna spend some
time reinforcing my shelter.

The rain's coming
and we might end up

having to spend quite a
bit of time in there.

At this point, the most
challenging thing out here

is the weather.

I mean the time of year,
it's getting colder,

and if it rains and it's cold,

it can lead to hypothermia
pretty quickly.

I'm gonna get these conifer
boughs and I'm gonna pile 'em up,

pile 'em up, pile 'em up,
on the ridge pole,

on the outside of the tarp
for a little added insulation

for Bean and I.

It'll help block the wind,

and it'll keep the
heat kind of enclosed.

NARRATOR: With colder,
wetter weather blowing in,

Jen's decision to
shore up her shelter

could prove to be a wise one.

JEN: I haven't
really eaten much,

but there is just no point
in being out in this weather,

especially my little Bean dog
because she's little and old

and I'm not gonna make her
get out of the shelter

or the sleeping bag.

I don't know.

I really don't know what
I'm gonna do right now.

NARRATOR: As the
teams pass the halfway
mark of their challenge,

they each have enjoyed
a few small successes.

Despite their
lackluster shelter,

Dane and Willow are
now leading the pack.

They've been thinking
quickly on their feet,

have managed fire,

and also devised a
passive fishing set up

that they hope will deliver.

Jen and Dean wasted no time

scrounging up some
edible morsels,

and maintaining a
respectable shelter.

But this duo's
spirits are flagging

despite being in second place.

Bringing up the rear
are Chad and Nala,

whose once adequate shelter
is giving way the elements.

The ever-worsening weather
is not making things easier

for any of the teams

but to win this challenge,

or at least survive it,
they'll have to push harder.

CHAD: We both know that

we need a better shelter.

CHAD (off-screen):
Even though I wanna build
a shelter on a full stomach,

with the weather getting worse

I just can't put
it off any longer.

I took my old shelter down
so I can use these pieces

to build the mac-daddy shelter.

We're gonna make a
bush-craft cabin.

Unlike the tepee, this shelter
will have a fully covered roof

so it should be waterproof.

We'll have room
inside for a fire pit

so we can keep a lot
warmer at night.

Nice.

This is gonna take
a lot of calories.

(grunts)

(groans)

I'm feeling not eating.

Nala, girl, you ready to work?

I'm gonna need your help today,
girl, to pull that wall up.

It's gonna be very
important for us.

more rugged structure

than the one they
started with.

there and guards,

making sure that we're safe in
our shelter which is amazing.

I'm still super hungry.

We're gonna try

I'm grateful for the food,
and Bean helped me,

and I've been thinking
about how I wanted

to spend this time with her

because Bean means
everything to me,

and we just don't get
dogs for long enough,

so you gotta make the
most of every moment.

She's not getting younger,
but I think Bean proves

that you're never too
old for an adventure.

I mean we have been
through the ringer so far

and it has been a lot
more challenging

than any mountain has,

and I look down and she's
just happy, playful,

couldn't be more
stoked to be out here.

It just gives
me a big boost,

super sketchy,

Chad's drive

to the extraction point

The water's risen so
much because of the rain.

The flooding washed up some
heavy logs that I can use.

I'm gonna have to rely on
Nala to pull those logs

out of the water because
I'm totally worn out.

Pull up on shore, girl.

Good girl.

Here, there's another one.

Good girl, Nala, good girl!

Yeah.

Yeah, woo!

Gonna get all these together
and start building a raft

so we can get the
hell out of here.

Nala's been a real champ along
the way with building this raft.

She's saved me
tons of calories,

tons of time,

she knows that I'm depleted,
she can feel it,

and she's really
stepped up as a partner.

I don't know if
it works yet but if it's
gonna float us, good.

NARRATOR: Chad's ingenuity
in building a raft

with Nala's eagerness to help

demonstrate the duo's
exemplary survival skills.

As the last day of the
challenge draws to a close,

the three teams are awarded a
rating up to a maximum of ten

based on how they used
their survival skills

and mental toughness to
secure food, water, fire,

and shelter while relying on
the strength of their teamwork.

CHAD (off-screen):
We're ready to go home!

NARRATOR: Chad demonstrated
impressive construction skills

throughout the challenge,

completing two shelters
as well as a raft

and although Nala initially
suffered from lack of focus.

CHAD: Come on, hey, focus.

NARRATOR: She eventually
became an invaluable teammate.

CHAD: Good girl, Nala.

Good girl!

NARRATOR: However, Chad's
inability to source food

during his time in
the wilderness.

CHAD: Oh, (bleep).

NARRATOR: Hurt their
final standing.

He and Nala received
a score of seven.

CHAD (off-screen): Nala
means everything to me.

The bond between
us is unbreakable.

I would do anything for her

and I feel like she would
do anything for me.

DANE (off-screen):
Oh, that's very cute.

Hi.
We did it friend, alright.

Let's go.

Let's hit it, alright,
let's go home.

Woo-hoo!

NARRATOR: Dane proved that a
combination of mental toughness

and creative thinking can
be tickets to success.

DANE (off-screen): Oh, fish!

NARRATOR: And with her
easy going disposition,

even when confronting
challenges she'd
never faced before,

Willow confirmed that
she can excel in the wild

as much as any other dog.

DANE: The lady who
found the worms.

NARRATOR: This duo earned a
final rating of eight points.

JEN: You ready, Bean?

You ready for another adventure?

Let's go! Oh boy!

NARRATOR: Jen's extensive
wilderness experience was key

to her success at both
foraging and catching food.

JEN: Yes! Woo!

NARRATOR: And although
Bean is older,

she displayed great
energy and willingness

to tough it out in the wild.

Bean was also a
great comfort to Jen

who found herself easily
discouraged by the adversity.

They won a total
score of six points.

JEN (off-screen):
Bean is 12 years old,
but you know,

it doesn't seem like she's
slowing down anytime soon.

I'm sure there'll be
plenty of more adventures.

NARRATOR: In the end,
Dane and Willow,

the underdogs with the
least wilderness experience

of the three teams pulled
off a well-deserved,

upset victory.

DANE (off-screen): I'm happy to
know that I still can dig deeper

than I thought I actually could,

but there's no chance in hell

I could've
successfully completed

this challenge without Willow.

The moral support,

just having her
follow me everywhere,

just helped me keep going.

Anybody who says
goldendoodles aren't
badass hasn't met Willow.
