KEALI'I: Uh oh.
Hoku's on to something.

(Hoku howls).

That's a moose track.

That still feels wet, so it
tells me that it's fresh.

We're definitely on
a active game trail.

I don't want to sneak up on
a bear or a moose out here so

I'm gonna keep making
as much noise as I can to

make sure that
whatever is out here

knows we're out here.

(tribal call).

(Hoku barks).

Pretty sure we scared it.

This is Hoku.
He's 2 and a half years old.

He's a Mala-mutt or a
Malamute slash Husky mix.

He's great at digging.

He loves the water.

He loves fishing and you put
us together and we're gonna be

able to accomplish a lot.

Growing up I did have
two Huskies that passed away

at an early age.

I was traumatized and I was
like "I'm not getting a dog

ever again" and then
Hoku came into my life.

Hoku is a great listener.
He is also a great talker.

We get along very well.

We got to make it to the top.
Let's go.

(Hoku barks)

What? What?

I gotta figure out
where we're going!

We got water.

So, my game plan for the next
ten days with Hoku is not to

just survive out here,
but I want to be as

primitive as possible.

I've never had the
opportunity to go out into

the wild and to
get Hoku to help build shelter,

build fire, catch fish,

and this isn't
the stuff that we can't
do in our everyday life.

It's pretty soft and dry.

This would be the
bed right here.

We can sleep under the stars
which is as primitive as you

can get at the moment.

Hoku high five.

Oh alright.

NARRATOR: After leading
Keali'i to their basecamp,

Hoku earns a break.

While three and a
half miles away...

DUB (off-screen): Hanky.

(whistles)

Where are you going?

NARRATOR: An excitable
hound springs into action.

DUB: Slow your roll, Hanky,
I can't keep up with you man.

Somewhere pretty
darn close is water.

Let's go get it, Hanky.

What do you got, Hanky?

Look.
Hanky found some bone.

That is sweet.

I honestly don't know what
they are from but definitely

predators out here in Maine.

NARRATOR: Dub and Hank will
not only compete with two

other teams but also with
Maine's wildlife all trying to

stock up on as much food
as possible before the cold

winter weather arrives.

DUB: This is Hank.
He is three years old.

He's a mix breed.

He was adopted a couple of
years ago from a kill shelter.

Hank is really good at digging
and he's a hardcore swimmer.

He's built for it.

He loves to do it
and he learns fast.

The best thing that ever
could have happened to me

was the serendipitous
moment of adoption.

When he is by my side, it
makes my life a lot better.

He's pretty much my brother.

Finally, dude.

Ah man.

This is a really, really
nice-looking river.

I just want to stand here and
take this in for a second.

There's plenty of timber in
here to use for our shelter

and this natural blowdown
could make like 50% of my

shelter for me.

So, Hanky, I'll cut them
down and you can haul them.

Let's do it Hanky.

The last two years
have been crazy.

I've been spending way too
much time working and not

nearly enough time with Hank.

So, let's go.

Come on, Hanky.

Pull it.

I left my job to come here
and spend this time with Hank.

Hank, you're doing
a great job, man.

We haven't been in the woods
in a long time and now we're

both more determined than
we've ever been to succeed and

get back to our roots of
just surviving and thriving

in the wilderness.

We're going to find
some raw materials like

live tag alders.

We're gonna jam into the
ground, bowl 'em over.

Create the bones of this
structure and we're gonna use

the natural blow
down as the back.

Now we're gonna just start
weaving branches in and out.

NARRATOR: For the next 10 days
the three teams will attempt

to earn up to a maximum 10
points based on the success of

their survival skills.

DUB: Boy this is looking cozy.

NARRATOR:
Teamwork is critical.

Each pair must work
together to source

food and water, secure fire,

build sturdy shelter
and stay mentally tough,

earning a point
if they succeed and two
points if they excel.

But if a team leaves the
contest early for any reason,

they forfeit the
chance of winning.

DUB: What do you think, Hanky?

NARRATOR: After 10 days,

the team with
the highest score wins.

DUB: We got a campsite.

We got a shelter.
We're doing great.

I don't think I could find
a better dog on the planet

to be my teammate.

NARRATOR: Using the fallen
tree as part of his shelter

shows Dub's resourcefulness,
helped along by Hank.

They're shelter
building teamwork saves Dub

a lot of time and
more importantly, energy.

While over the next ridge
on a craggy path through

a dry creek bed,

a small but mighty border collie
is leading the way.

KATHY (off-screen):
Yeah, be a good trail guide.

OK, let's go.
Let's go. Good boy.

Wow it looks really
thick down there.

The terrain is just so uneven.

I doubt if I've even
covered a mile so far.

KATHY: What do you smell?

Huh, what do you smell?

KATHY: Uh, I think this is
chaga which is like a fungus

that grows on the birch.

So, yup that's what this is.

Good boy, tough guy!

This is Tuffy.

He's a McNab border collie
and he is three years old.

Tuffy is very loyal,
very sweet, very athletic.

He's a working dog.

He loves to have a
job and he just is the

perfect companion really.

When he was about nine
months old, he had been shot,

left for dead on the
side of the road.

He had a broken pelvis and
a broken tibia, broken tail.

He was so broken
he couldn't walk.

Tuffy just got discarded and
I volunteered to foster Tuffy.

Since I'm a cancer survivor,
we're both survivors.

I think that's why
we make a good team.

Found the creek but uh, the
only good thing about here is

that there's water.

Oh, my God, OK,
I gotta stay out of that mud.

It's deep.

I mean we go out in the woods
a lot and one of the things

that I always worried about,

what if I got hurt?

Would Tuffy know what to do?

Should we go this way?

And so, I think going
through this with Tuffy,

it'll definitely make me
have a lot more confidence in

Tuffy's ability to survive.

I seriously don't know where
I have to go from here.

NARRATOR: Daylight is fading
fast and while Kathy and Tuffy

struggle to navigate through
the maze of water ways...

KATHY: I'd certainly like
to find some sort of shelter

before it gets dark.

NARRATOR: The two other
teams are already settled

in their basecamps.

(flint strikes)

KEALI'I (off-screen):
There we go.

NARRATOR: Keali'i and Hoku
have already secured fire.

KEALI'I: That is a fire.

(sighs)

Good job today buddy.

NARRATOR: Dub and Hank
also have a fire and water.

DUB: Can't wait to drink this.

NARRATOR: But Dub's shelter,
re-enforced with maple bows,

gives him an early lead
at the end of day one.

Kathy and Tuffy are
running out of time to

find a suitable shelter site and
get situated before darkness.

KATHY: Come here.
Let's try this.

I wanted to stay
near the creek,

and I wanted to follow the
creek down and then it just

got so thick and
difficult to pass through.

It's getting dark and
it's starting to get cold.

I just feel like we're
back in no man's land.

NARRATOR: With the sun
setting and temperatures
quickly dropping,

Kathy and Tuffy are
searching for clues for the

right direction to set
up shelter for the night.

I'm gonna make a tepee
for the sleeping quarters.

NARRATOR: After spending
most of the first day
lost in the wilderness,

Kathy and Tuffy have
just managed to erect a

barely adequate shelter
to get them through
their first night,

putting them behind
in the competition.

KATHY: It's kind of windy.

Getting colder but we have our
little rough camp set up here.

Got a little semi-shelter up.

Nothing fancy but
nice warm sleeping bag and

Tuffy's all tucked in.

Aren't you, Tuffy?

I am so tired.

Sleep rough tonight.
That's for sure.

NARRATOR: After a sleepless
night without shelter in

Maine's frigid terrain,

Keali'i and Hoku come up with

a new plan to keep
them warm at night.

KEALI'I: Hoku, let's go buddy.
Good boy.

Last night totally sucked.

Hoku and I want to
build a mansion-fort,

so we need some pretty
big, long wood out here.

Want to take this one?

Oh, that's a big one Hoku.

So far, trying to stay
primitive has worked out

pretty well for us but
uh, man, this environment,

this weather, this cold, is
just completely different than

what I'm used to on
Oahu and California,

so we need a roof
for sure, Hoku.

We're gonna stack
a bunch of wood,

I'm gonna strap it to Hoku's
harness and hopefully drag a

bunch of wood through
the forest till we get back

to base camp.

We will do this together.

Two and a half years ago,
my girlfriend at the time, Leah,

got Hoku for me as
a birthday gift.

Leah and I broke up,

but we made the decision
that it would be best for

Hoku to live with
her since I'm always

on the road a lot.

So, I'm glad we're out
here and I'm glad we're

spending time together.

I didn't think I would be this
emotional over building this,

but we built
this together, so.

It's an awesome experience
to go through this with Hoku.

NARRATOR: Keali'i's reinforced
shelter will allow him and

Hoku to recharge in comfort.

Across the river,

hunger has set in for
Dub as he and Hank search

for solutions to secure food.

DUB: Hanky. Let's go.

We're looking for a really
long fishing rod looking tree.

This one looks decent.

I'm so freaking hungry.

So, this is nice and
flexible, fairly light.

Not perfect but I think
we'll get fish on it.

Being out fishing and
being in the wilderness,

it's always been the place
where I feel happiest

and most at peace.

But the past couple of
years have been difficult

for both of us.

My work has really pulled me
away from having the time to

take the trips.

Hank's way more in
his element here.

Coming out here was a chance
for us to renew our love for the

wilderness and be together
in peace and heal our souls.

Dogs don't live nearly long
enough and you might as well

give them all the
adventure you can pack in.

You gotta take that time.

secure food yields no reward,

Kathy and Tuffy take a
low-risk approach by foraging

for their food.

KATHY: Oh, OK.

Tuffy's chipper this morning.

Today is gonna be all
about trying to find food.

There's a difference

starting to be weak.

diagnosed with cancer.

you kind of face death.

And you recover and suddenly
nothing scares you anymore.

Yeah, I would define myself
as a survivor at this point,

for sure.

I would define Tuffy
as a survivor too.

Life is short and you know,

if there's something
you wanna do,

you better do it.

Being out here right now
is a good opportunity to

prove that we can get through
any challenge together.

NARRATOR: The sorrel Tuffy

it was a lot simpler.

I feel like I lost
that way for a while.

I'm surrounded by technology

but then I teach primitive
wilderness survival so I want

to be able to show my
students Coach K isn't just

out there teaching
you and yelling at you,

he can also do it.

when you're camping on right
on top of large game trails.

It's like we're camping
in somebody else's

A huge move like this is

of my energy out.

NARRATOR: Halfway
through the challenge,

teams have been
surviving by foraging

and staying hydrated.

Keali'i and Hoku have earned a
marginal lead with four points,

with their mental stamina
and skilled shelter.

Kathy and Tuffy and Dub
and Hank stagger behind,

currently tied
with two points.

None of the teams have sourced
any significant protein yet so

securing food during the
second half of the challenge

will not only improve a score,

but draw the line between
surviving and thriving.

KATHY: Two days ago,

I took up my
belt loop by one notch.

And today I had to take
it up by another notch.

I'm hungry.

Tuff, we need to find a fish.

Tuffy loves to play fetch.

So, the whole idea is that
Tuffy can get the stick,

that net behind him.

NARRATOR: The net Kathy
brought could be effective,

day of the challenge
draws to a close,

the three teams are
awarded a rating up to a

maximum of ten based on
how they used their survival

skills and mental
toughness to secure

food, water, fire,

and shelter while
relying on the strength

of their teamwork.

KATHY: Oh, my God.

You ready?

Let's go, let's go!
Lead the way, buddy.

NARRATOR: During the
course of the challenge,

Kathy survived
mostly on foraging.

When she didn't
have enough energy,

she was able to lean on
her partner Tuffy to help her.

KATHY: Oh, my God, Tuff.

NARRATOR: Just as
they always have,

Kathy and Tuffy persevered
through every obstacle

standing in their way,
earning a score of five points.

KATHY: Tuffy and I both
have a survivor mentality

cause we've both
been through hardship.

That definitely helped us
get through the challenge.

And, I would say now,
after this challenge,

our survivor mentality
is even stronger.

DUB: Oh, Hanky.

This is such a
bittersweet moment.

Come on, Hanky.

NARRATOR: Though they
had a difficult start...

DUB: I just cut the
(bleep) out of my hand.

NARRATOR: Dub and Hank got
back into their groove and by

working together,
realized their survival

instincts never left them.

DUB: Where's the bait at Hank?

NARRATOR: This formidable team
adapted to every situation to

prove that they
could only survive

but thrive in the wild.

Dub and Hank bounced back from
every setback they encountered

and earned a score tied to
Kathy and Tuffy with 5 points.

DUB: Hank and I definitely
achieved what we set out to do

which was test ourselves
physically, mentally,

and to get a complete mind
reboot from the rat race.

I'm walking out of here
with no job but a fresh new

perspective and it's gonna
long-term mean a better life

for me and a better
life for Hank and a better

life into eternity.

KEALI'I: Hoku and I
had one heck of a time.

I think Hoku loved
every second of it.

Come on, buddy.

NARRATOR:
Keali'i set out wanting
to follow his ancestors,

and he was able to achieve
some impressive builds

with primitive techniques.

KEALI'I: She's floating!

NARRATOR: He had a great
teammate in Hoku who was able

to pull the weight
when Keali'i couldn't.

KEALI'I: Good job, high-five!

NARRATOR: They demonstrated
great skill and stamina in

building their robust
shelter and never gave up

in their quest for food.

Consistently determined
and undeterred,

their mental
toughness carried them

through the challenge,

earning this team a winning
score of six points.

KEALI'I: There is
no going back after

this adventure together.

There is only going forward,

and I want to cherish
every moment with him,

and I also don't
want to miss those moments

where he's going to amaze me.

I see big adventures for
Hoku and I in the future.
