Now, there's a lot of other panels that can reside inside of after Effects, but for the most part, these are the three main panels.

So before we dive in and really get started into this course, let's 1st talk about your preferences inside of after effects.

So to open preferences, run a click on after effects preferences, and the word is going to click on general.

You can see there's a lot of different preferences listed here, or we're going to start with general.

Now, the preferences here are enabled for my machine, and these are the preferences I prefer to work with.

Now, you can always pick different preferences that you feel work for you, but I am going to show you what works for me.

So this 1st one is pathpoint and handle size.

As you progress more throughout after effects, and you become more comfortable with it, you'll start to use scripts and plugins later on, and this preference will allow those to to work inside of after fix.

By default, this is usually turned off.

I would say, turn it on Play sound when render finishes.

This is an important one if you have audio in your timeline, so you obviously want to hear the sound.

Moving to previews, I always go adaptive resolution.

Audio is usually turned off when you open after effects for the 1st time.

I mute audio, um, because if you don't mute audio and you're trying to preview things, you can get some really funky sounding audio when it's not real time.

So this just says, hey, don't play any audio until my preview goes real time, and then I want to hear it in real time.

So I would justifies that you turn this on.

I don't think I've ever really messed with this one.

Grids and guides. A lot of times this defaults to a higher number, um, I think it's nine or twelve, typically,

You can change guide colors here.

You're probably okay to start with the default colors, and if you find that things just aren't pleasing to your eye, you can always come in here and change colors.

I would leave these safe margins exactly what where they are.

Labels. So you get into using lots of labels in the timeline.

These are the default colors. I have never changed them.

I don't think they're the best colors to use, but I have just been too lazy to change the colors throughout the year.

You do want to enable a discash, ideally this.

This cash is on a separate drive than what after effects the application is sitting on.

So if after effects the application is sitting on my main hard drive for my computer, I personally have an external SSD drive that is very, very fast, and I set it to that be the cash folder for after fix.

What the cash folder is is it puts media files there so it can quickly access these media files and preview animations and motion graphics back quicker.

So it's always a good idea to have your cash disc on a separate drive, and just a point to where that drive is.

Video preview This is if you have an external monitor, which I do not, you would enable this and you'd set up the external monitor.

Sometimes external monitors are good to preview renders outside of the main window.

Here, I work on an IMAC, and I find that it works just great for my uses appearances.

The default is very dark. This can also affect label colors, if you want it to.

I leave that alone. Gradients, you'll see right here, like if you look down in this area, or this up here, if I turn gradients on, you can see that those bars slightly change.

It's nice just to draw attention to these panels.

You can also adjust the interactive control and the focus indicators.

I leave these all defaults, so these settings are all default for me.

Okay, new project. This is a big one.

I am giving you a template that is a setup for how you should organize your assets inside of after effects.

And there it is. So I'll show you what happens with that here in a minute.

But what this does, instead of opening up after effects every time to just a blank canvas, the project fellow gave you, is going to give you a folder structure of how to work and state organize.

And I find that it's a very solid folder structure to, uh, keep you very organized through your projects.

When you work inside of after effects, things can get very busy, very disorganized very quickly.

Next, we got auto save. I haven't enabled to save every 20 min I think it's enabled, so it's not turned on when you 1st start up after fix, I find about every 20 min is fine.

I get a little annoyed sometimes.

So when you get into very large project files, when you enable us every five or 10 min and all of a sudden you're working and it stops, you want to start saving.

If it's a bigger project file, I could take, you know, a few seconds, and when you're right in the middle of something, that's a little bit annoying.

This is also turned on when you start a render, it's going to automatically save and it's going to save a maximum of five projects versions when you're out of savings.

I'm using a breakout box, which is a scarlet two I two us bbox.

So it's a true sound, which, you know, working in after effects is not so important that we have the very true sound a lot of times.

I don't really typically mess with these settings.

You know, feel free to change preferences based on how you like to work.

So typically, whenever you open after fix up, and you load a new project, it just comes in blank like this.

There's nothing up here in the project window, which is our main window for the project files.
