that needs to get done.

of our bigger projects.

Everything does look
great what has been done,

but there's a lot
that needs to be done still.

Cony is my biggest rivalry.

You know, I grew up hating them.

Cony is a high school
up here from Gardiner.

Cony and Gardiner have
one of the longest rivalries

in the history of
high school sports.

Hi.

- Wow.
- [Ashley] Unrecognizable.

- [Suzanne] Unbelievable.

[Robbie] Good work.

[Ashley] Why are we walking
through these woods?

[Ryan] Where are
we headed today?

Today, we are in
Winthrop headed to

our next camp to meet
the Chadwick family.

The interesting thing
about this camp

is that it was built
by the Cony family,

the family that also
built our high school.

The rivalry lives on.

Cony is my biggest rivalry,
you know.

I grew up hating them.

Cony is a high school
up here from Gardiner.

Cony and Gardiner have
one of the longest rivalries

in the history of
high school sports.

I was bred to hate them

and I definitely wasn't
supposed to spend my life

hanging out with people
from Cony.

[Chase]
They recently purchased it

and it definitely needs
to be updated.

It still got original knob
and tube wiring.

[Ashley] So what does this
have to do with Cony?

- [Chase] Hey, look.
- [Ryan] What is that?

Why is there a mascot here?

It was a good one, you guys.

Look, there's the camp
of the Chadwicks right there.

- Hi.

[Ryan] Hey, guys.

And this is Goose.

And we're the Chadwick family.

[Ashley] I see a puppy.

That's Goose.

- Hi, Goose.
- Wanna hang out?

[Chase]
He's four months old.

- [Ashley] Oh, look.
- [Ryan] He is so handsome.

[Chase] Yup.

[Ashley] So this is the camp.

Tell us about it.

We purchased this camp
in August.

The camp was built
in the early 1900s.

- Around 1906, so...
- [Ryan] Oh, wow.

it has a lot of
work that needs to get done.

The focal point for us
really was the front porch.

We just love that.

Obviously, that's where we're
gonna spend the majority

of our time with our two
daughters and our friends.

We obviously need a lot
of work on the bathrooms.

There is a nice old
fireplace in there.

We wanna expose some
of the beautiful fireplace,

which is unusable
right now. The...

- [Ashley] Keep the fireplace?
- [Suzanne] Yes.

[Robbie]
Has a furnace in the kitchen.

We'd like the kitchen done
and the furnace removed.

Anything else about the camp
that you wanna keep?

- Not really.
- [Ryan] The view.

[Suzanne] The view.

And the porch.

The side porch can be torn off.

Any colors to lean towards
or stay away from?

[Suzanne] We like
the gray and the black

that we started
with on the front.

I would say two special
requests would be a fire pit

out front so we can enjoy that
and maybe a bar.

- [Chase] Oh.
- [Ashley] A bar.

When do you need the camp back?

We would love to have it back

for the beginning of summer.

So about eight weeks.

How much are you looking
to put into the project?

We're looking to put in
around $50,000.

But if it goes
over a little bit,

we'll use some Cony math
to get it done.

[laughter]

We can work with that.

We just need a set of keys.

on a great lake
in the state of Maine.

It's pretty cool to have
the old grandma lights

you can pull down

I think it's a waste of space.

[Ashley] All camps have these.

- [Ryan] Yeah.

How is this being open
a waste of space?

Because, you know, like you have

two sets of steps,
you only need one.

[Ashley] If you're in the kitchen,
you have to walk all the way around

into the living
room to go upstairs.

[Chase] That's a good point.

[Ashley] Can we block that in,
give them a little more privacy?

- We can.
- Let's do that.

[Chase] It doesn't really do
anything for the Chadwicks.

[Ryan] Just a lot of room
there, I think Chase

will be able to come up
with a nice design.

You definitely want more
privacy, but there is a benefit

to having it open like that

because it allows the air to...

So it doesn't just get stuffy.

[Ryan] This room is pretty...

This room is definitely
not private.

[Ashley] You get some
privacy in the bathroom.

The drop ceilings.

[Chase]
On the interior of the camp,

we definitely can get
the Chadwicks

most everything
they're asking for,

upgrading the kitchen,
upgrading the electrical.

We are going to get rid of
the furnace, update plumbing,

get the fireplace
in good working condition.

Upstairs, we're gonna swap the
bedroom and the bathrooms around,

build new bedroom walls
that reach the ceiling.

- Nice.
- Well, let me get

the light for you, look at that.

That's so cool.
I could do this all day.

It's a great example
of the old knob and tube

that actually has the switches
that you turn.

Nice colors.

That is the biggest thing.

Knob and tube
is not safe anymore.

The coating on the wiring is,
at this point,

it's so brittle,
it falls off and it...

You definitely can
electrocute yourself.

- [Ryan] Nice porch.
- a really nice porch.

I can see myself
sitting here all day.

[Ryan] That's a nice view.

Why are the steps so wide?

[upbeat music playing]

[Chase] On the exterior,
we are going

to paint the siding,

replace the windows,

tear off the side porch,

landscaping and a fire pit
down the front.

New roof and new plumbing.

Left.

First I saw the camp,

the first time I looked at it,

this sure is well-taken care of.

And it needs a lot,

but we got a good place
to start.

First thing
I liked is the puppy.

[upbeat music playing]

[Chase] We might as well walk
in front and block the orange.

- [laughter] - [Ryan]
Break it up a little bit.

[Ashley]
So walking up to camp today,

I noticed all the Gardiner guys

have on their colors.

We didn't get a memo
to wear our red and white.

[Chase] I've been out of
high school for 30 years.

[Chase] You think I got
anything that says Cony on it?

So, I went
to Gardiner High School,

they call them the tigers.

And everyone knows
a tiger eats a ram.

Those rams are lacking
some school spirit.

[Ryan] Hey, you guys can keep
walking to your side, okay?

When we're walking up
and we saw all the orange,

I know that Dixie,
Ashley and I definitely

didn't get the memo.

You know, we're even
starting the day.

Well, not really
because they've got four,

we've got three, but I'm
sure Cony will hold its own.

Is that really your high
school football jacket?

Yeah. Of course, it is.

It says Ryan right there.

Oh, okay, Ryan.

There's a lot of Ryans
in Gardiner.

I sent a text out to my team,
Brad, Cam and Jedi.

And yeah, it was worth
walking in

with all the black and orange.

You know, the look
on their faces.

They're all like,
"Did we not get the memo?"

Like, "No, you gotta be
the memo."

You gotta make the memo.

[Chase] Goal today is to
get the bathrooms demoed,

get the furnace out of there, get
the upstairs kind of pulled apart.

See what we need to do
to rebuild that

and that should be good.

[Ashley]
I'm not getting out of here.

Let me out here real quick.

You wanna see what
a nose guard used to do?

This is called double bubble.

Well, the nose guard would
line up like four feet back

and just take out the center.

I was working on tearing
out one of the bathrooms.

Trying to get
that shower stall out

which was next to impossible.

This is not coming out
to save my life. Split...

Dixie and I are upstairs.
We're working on the shower.

We are, you know, trying
to take it out piece by piece.

Maybe you guys
are having problems

with the shower.

And then in comes Ryan.

[Ashley] Oh, yeah.

[Ashley] Come on.

You gotta get mad sometimes

Well, Brad was busy
so I got mad for us

and then I got Brad.

You know, I really got
a lot of power

to put my jacket on,

you know, back on the field,
the lights were on.

That's the first shower
Ryan's taken on with.

[laughs]

Kitchen already looks
10 times bigger

by just pulling out
the stove and the furnace,

it really opened up
the space a lot more.

And this is just gonna be
a three season camp,

so you don't need
a furnace at all.

Now, we're gonna put back
a fridge and a stove

on that wall,
but it just allows us to

kind of change the
configuration a little bit.

It's so much bigger in here.

- Woo.
- [Chase] Yeah.

Get rid of that furnish.

We could have a dance off.

All right. Grab a hammer.

And a pry bar.

I need your help.

- All right.
- [Chase] And glasses.

My regular glasses?

[Chase] Sure. Ashley.

[Ashley] Coming.
Reporting to duty.

We're gonna show team Gardiner

how demo's done.

The walls only went up
about eight feet high.

And then it was open rest
of the attic space,

which was great, you know,

helped with airflow,

kept it cool in the summertime,

but it doesn't afford you
much privacy.

Here Ashley.

So that wall was only
three quarter inches thick,

no studs or anything.

So in order to build off
of that,

we decided to pull
the walls out entirely

so that we could frame it up

and support a wall that would
go up to the ceiling.

Whoa. Hey.

- Yeah. Yeah.
- Yeah. Whoo.

Boom. [makes sound]

Took down those walls
Cony style.

All the boards are still intact.

Chase can reuse the boards.

Ryan had been up there, every
single one of those boards

would be broken in half,
it'd be all demolished.

And we wouldn't be able
to reuse them.

Point for Cony.

[rock music playing]

[metal clanks]

[Ryan] That's another...

That three-pointer.

Ten, nothing, Gardiner.

Oh. This is a shower base.

It is probably a good 200...

250 pounds.

It's all cement.

- So we'll see what it does.
- The porch has to come down.

We're always thinking
of ways to do stuff

the easiest way we can,
you know,

so I was just thinking
weak porch,

big piece of concrete.

- Drum roll, please.
- [Chase] Oh, good.

[Ryan] Yeah.

- Yes.
- [Ashley] I'm so impressed.

[Brad] Okay. So we found
a new way to do rafters.

[Ryan] Porch wins.

Gardiner still on.

- I think I'm gonna bring this jacket to all job sites.
- Yeah.

That could be a demo jacket.

[Ashley]
The score is all tied up.

[Chase] We're all one team.

Here's... Here's
a peace offering.

I never wanna see that again.

Are we going steady now?

[Chase] Yeah. That was a good
job getting the interior gutted out.

We still have
to take this porch down,

get windows ordered,
get it jacked and leveled.

Get the roofing lined up,
get the kitchen going,

get plumbing going,
get electrical going.

Oh, that's a small list.

- It's only the beginning.
- [Ryan] Pretty much everything except framing.

Yup. That's a good first day.

[Dixie] Today we are
here at the Chadwicks'.

[drilling sound]

We got started on
jacking on the camp.

The jack will
just have to sit up

in the side there,
you know what I mean?

There's a lot of space
underneath the camp,

too much space to safely jack

so I kinda devised up
this little,

um, jack in the box
so like a wooden piston.

The problem that I worry
about is the jack kicking out.

So, what I've done is I've
basically put the jack

inside of a box
and then we ran a piston

on the inside of the box.

So, what that enables us to do
is we can put this up

underneath where we need
to jack and put some diagonal

bracing on so when
we we're jacking

and leveling the camp,
we don't have to worry

about our jack
and our post kicking out.

Whoa. So close.

[upbeat music playing]

[Dixie] It definitely saved
quite a bit of time

and it was just a very safe way

of getting the camp leveled out.

[hammering sound]

It's a post but it's got
a jack in the middle of it.

I love it.

[dramatic music playing]

It's week two at the
Chadwicks' camp

and, you know,
all the window openings

have been taken care of.

They're starting to get
the posts in

to frame everything up
on the interior.

At Chadwick camp,
first thing we want to do

is open up in between
the kitchen and living room.

We got these carrying beams,

support beams, temporary beams,

to take the weight off
both ceilings

so that we can lift the beam
into the place

and make sure
that every floor joist

is sitting on top
of the beam and then

we'll put our posts
beside it and they'll

open this up nicely
to be able to walk through

from the kitchen
to the living area.

Like this, do you want it
to look like that

or do you want it
to have the flat side?

[Chase] I'd say you have
these on the side, right?

[Rodney] I thought...
I like that.

I thought that was pretty good.

And their kids can do
pull ups on it.

- [Rodney] There you go.
- Right? Yeah.

[zooming sound]

[upbeat music playing]

Week four at the Chadwick
camp, things are progressing nicely.

Rodney's crew have got the
upstairs walls reframed

and the exterior of the camp
has been painted.

[Ashley] The Chadwicks had
started to paint the camp

gray with black trim
and they really liked it

so we decided to continue
with that

for the rest of the camp.

And with the new black windows,

it will really pop.

Today we are
focusing on roofing.

We're getting staging set up
so we can get up there

safely to strip it, reroof it.

We started closing
in front of the camp

and work is continuing
on the interior.

Inside here, our windows
have been removed.

Everything has been framed up.

Window openings,
ready for electrical.

We were able to safely
change the stairs up,

support them properly,

close in above the fireplace

and open up the area
in between the kitchen

and living area.

Doug is here today
working on plumbing.

We're' gonna leave
the original sink and cabinets

and put in new appliances,
close in this side.

We were able to support
the second floor

better where the stairs end.

We made a nice safe
landing right here,

reframed in the bedroom walls
to get more privacy.

So, walls go to the ceiling.

In the back part,
we flip-flopped

where the bathroom
and bedroom were

so all the plumbing stays
in kind of one area

which allows for a nice,
large bedroom.

Window openings
are all framed up

so as soon as
the windows arrive,

we can slap those in
and we're good to go.

Today, the goal
is to get a new roof.

It's an older roof. It
definitely needs to be replaced

so we'll get staging set up,

get it stripped,

get underlayment down,

get the new roof on it,

and get it watertight
before the rain comes in.

[rock music playing]

Higher up, so we want
to be safe,

and, you know,
the more people the better.

We've got Brad, Ryan,
and I, stripping.

Come on, Brad.

Give it to me, buddy.

Attaboy, right there.

You know, but stripping roofs
is not fun.

It's dirty work but you just
got to do it, you know.

If you try to stay
clean, you know,

you're gonna get dirty
and get it done.

[Ryan] We got some
rotted boards here.

[Brad] Yeah. I was just gonna
say I got some dry rot.

[Chase] I don't like it.

[Brad] Ooh, it's wicked punky
right here.

[Chase] It looks like that's
a fairly new board, so.

Oh. Uh-oh, Chase.

So, it's week four
at the Chadwick camp

and today the goal

[Chase] It looks like that's
a fairly new board, so.

So, when we're
stripping the front,

the waterside of the camp.

There was definitely
some soft spots.

We had to find rot somewhere.

You know, dry rot gets in there

and it keeps spreading,
so we figured

we just take those
few boards out,

replace them, call it good
and go from there.

[upbeat music playing]

[Ryan] Yeah. That's right.
There we go.

That's the rhythm.
We want the rhythm.

[Ryan] Just get it.

Let's go, Cony.

[Chase] What is she saying?

What's the matter with her?

I got my team and a couple...
there's a couple extra...

I don't know if you can find
anyone for those

I gave Sarah one
because she's a Cony, so.

The legend of the rivalry
has gone around the lake.

Someone drops some shirts off
the headquarters.

I'm pretty sure
it was the Chadwicks.

But anyways, it was getting
late in the day,

you know,
we still had a lot to do.

So, I told Ashley
to give her team some,

I'll give my team some,
and, you know,

we've got the... we've got
the rivalry going.

We got the blood flowing.

We got people pumped up.

Dixie.

I had... I didn't have this
much pride in high school.

[Ryan] Oh, yeah. Look,
I find another white one.

That's nice.
Another white shirt.

Yeah. You see that, Chase?

I can... I can get some red
on that real fast.

[Ashley] It's after lunch.

You need the after lunch pep.

I figured this is a good way
to get everybody excited

and working hard again.

Finish off the day strong,

showing our colors.

[Ashley speaking]

We picked out the exterior
colors already.

Now I need to pick out
some interior colors.

Sarah, what do you think?

Cabinets are actually
pretty good-looking,

but I just thought to give
them a bit of a look,

just, kind of, like,
you know, liven them up a bit.

Is there another tone
that's a little darker

for the cupboards?

You know, I was trying... I was
thinking though, with the wood...

[Sarah] Oh, yeah.
To tie in with the live edge?

- Yeah.
- [Chase] Sarah!

I'm busy!

[Chase] What's she doing?

I've found a new job.

I'm gonna start
working for Ashley.

It looks so good upstairs.

Oh, I love the sound
of wa-was in the morning.

We're rolling through
week six at the Chadwick camp

and it's a good time to be here.

The windows came today
and the guys

are cranking them out.

[dramatic music playing]

Rodney Richard and crew did a
great job prepping the windows

and the place
is really coming together.

You know,
guys putting in windows,

Benny's working
on touchup paint,

we're taping them,
flashing them.

People are gonna ask
why are you taking the time

to spend the money that,
you know, flash these,

if it's just a three-season
camp because you never know

someday they may add
insulation so...

We only got one chance
to do this.

I love it. Nail it.

[dramatic music playing]

These windows are, you know,
a little nicer

than what we normally do
but well worth the extra time

and money and, hey, they got
here with a week to spare

so that's more time
than what we need.

You know, there's just
little stuff here and there.

We have some
downtime doing windows

that we can knock
that off the list.

There's a couple of shakes
that needed to be fixed.

This will last another 50, 60,
who knows how long.

[country music playing]

Still a lot of work to do
but seeing those windows

is just making me so happy.

Then we got to mill up
our trim and get that painted,

and we're good to go.

Beautiful.

[Chase] The front steps,
they were definitely

a straight shot
right out the door.

I mean, those stairs
went out ten feet

from the front of the camp

where that front deck
only goes out six feet.

So, Rodney
had a really good idea.

He suggested building
a small platform,

small landing, with a set
of stairs off to the side,

not straight down,
that gave them a landing area,

a space to stand,
gives them more space

down in front of their camp
by the water.

There's a lot to get done.

I showed up today.

I had the live edge slabs

for the countertops
in the kitchen.

I had some 1x4 trim
for windows and doors

on the interior and some V-match

to finish up sheeting
some walls.

So, Dixie...

[Dixie] Yes, sir.

I guess focus would be

to get these upstairs

windows trimmed out

so that we can get
everything done up here

so that we can get
these floors painted

- and dried and then...
- [Dixie] Sure.

I'll jump on these.

I got the extension

jams in and...

[Chase] I think this one's
gonna be a race to the finish.

Today is the day we finally get to
trim out these beautiful black windows.

They're gonna have
black trim plate.

It's gonna look really,
really nice.

One thing we like to do
a trick with this

is that when the shakes
are put in,

there's always a row that's cut

on the bottom so there's a lip

so we actually order
shiplap and we use

this bottom piece
as a natural covering.

So, I'll yell down to them

three and a half by the length.

They'll cut that and that's
gonna fit right over.

Just like that perfectly.

Just a really easy way
to make it look good.

[rock music playing]

Now cut.

That's perfect.

The slabs we're working
with today, three inches,

a typical skilsaw is only two
and a half inches deep.

You don't wanna have
to make multiple cuts

so that's what
that big saw is for.

- [Rodney speaking]
- I think so.

Working with live edge slabs
can be kinda tricky

because, you know,
they're slabs of a tree

and if it's not
a directly center cut,

you know, the edges taper in,

you've gotta have
at least 24 inches

but, you know,
trees taper as well.

[rock music playing]

So, I've got second piece cut.

I ended up putting up
a filler strip behind there

to bring it out far enough
to cover the whole countertop.

These will get a sanding down,
smoothen out the edges

and couple of coats
of polyurethane

- and those will be good.
- [Ashley] Whoa.

The place looks great.

Oh, nice.

That looks great.

- Live edge.
- Live edge.

Cool.

- It looks great.

So I was originally
going to paint the cabinets

in off white but then once I saw

the live edge countertop
roughed in,

I decided to just leave them
the natural wood color.

At this point,
usually I expected to pull up

and most of the construction
was gonna be done, it's not.

Everything does look great
what has been done

but there's a lot that
needs to be done still

and I am really worried.

I mean,
there's a lot that's left.

they can pull it off,
we only have eight days left.

So it's scary.

paint the floors,

get the kitchen
countertops sanded,

polyurethaned, do some
landscaping on the exterior,

get all the trim
on the exterior done,

but, you know,
the weather's good,

the days are long,

I'm confident
we can get it done.

Let's get it already.

Today I'm working on a bar

for the Chadwick camp

as one of their requests

and I happen to have

the bow of an old wooden boat

that is no longer seaworthy.

Over the past couple weeks, I've
just kind of been prepping the boat bar,

I want to get it set it place

before I lock
everything together.

I cut these pieces back
at my workshop,

now it's just a matter
of attaching it all together

and locking it in good.

I'll probably tie that side
to the post

and then, you know, put some
fresh stone in here.

Whoever's the bartender
can stand right here

and serve some drinks.

[Dixie] You could put
a cooler right here.

- That's a big screw.
- [laughs]

That looks nice.

- What else does it need?
- Nothing.

The only thing that's missing?

The drinks?

My three favorite types of bars,

a sandbar, a candy bar,
and now a boat bar.

[Ashley] We're gonna make
this into a bottle cap serving tray.

- Oh, cook.
- So I arranged some earlier

and they look cool, like have the
blue ones make a sea in the middle.

- Yeah.
- The rest will have silver.

So Chase is making a bar
for the Chadwicks

so I thought it'd be fun
to take some old bottle caps

and make a serving tray.

And it'll be a nice serving tray

that will go well with the bar.

So Ash asked me to help
her out with her serving tray.

What I basically did
was just rip some pine

and mitered the corners,
and cut the plywood for her

just so she could lay out
her bottle caps.

Okay.

Pretty simple process actually,

we need to attach the frame...

Perfect.

to the board

and make sure it's a nice

tight, tight, tight seal.

Slide this in.

So then we put some
caulking on the inside

and around the edge.

Perfect.

And let that dry so that then

when we pour the acrylic in,
it doesn't seep out.

So we're just gonna
tack it down a little.

This wood glue,
just tack it down a little.

Well, I took a thin layer
of the caulking

and spread it out
really, really thin

so that when I placed
the bottle caps,

they'll stick
and won't go moving around

so that then
when I pour the acrylic,

um, they won't float or move.

It looks good.

You know, we've been going back
and forth with the Cony-Gardiner thing,

I thought maybe
I could make a C, or a G,

and the Cony-Gardiner colors

but, you know,
we decided we're all one team.

So I went with a nice big old C

for Chadwick and Cony.

We probably should move it
to the screened in porch.

- So...
- Stuff doesn't fall in it while it's drying?

You know, like a brown-tail
moth or something.

- Okay.
- And then when she got her bottle caps ready to go,

I helped her mix the epoxy
and pour it into the tray.

[upbeat music playing]

Don't mess it up there, baby.

[Dixie speaking]

I do like doing this stuff.

[Ashley] Soon as this is dry,
it'll be good.

- [Dixie] Yeah.
- Ready to serve some beer,

serve some whatever, all right.

We had eight weeks, $50,000.

It was probably one
of our bigger projects

but, you know,
it was definitely down

- to the last minute.

The first thing that
I noticed was the paint,

I love the color.

we did was pull up

that side porch
and we got underneath,

raised it up a little bit,

but it was fairly decent

which was nice,

stripped the roof off,
put a new roof on,

left most of the cedar
shakes, stain on the trim,

new windows were probably one
of the last things to go in,

and then Francis came in,
brought the ground level up.

We really don't even
need to see the rest of it.

- That's it.
- Well, you're gonna have to.

The porch was
taken off, it looks amazing.

- [Suzanne] Mmm-hmm.
- Everything about it, it just felt like it

had been here forever.

So getting that furnace

freed up a ton of space,

we're able to put
a small bar right there

and ended up putting these, uh,

live edge slabs
on all your countertops.

We have all electrical
throughout, all new plumbing,

closed in the walls
with the eastern white pine.

Redid the bathroom.

and like an actual sink.

gonna get to use it

living with three ladies,
but having that, um,

bathroom that's useable
and fresh,

it's just incredible.

that you wanted us to save

with a screened in porch

so we did just that.

we've struggled with

was how to make those old stairs

really work for the space
and we decided just to, uh,

- get rid of them.

- So we're able to, you know, give you a small landing...
