That must be the 12:50, surely?

Late... yes, 12:50.

I never see that train go by without

remembering a very strange adventure
that also began on a train.

And just about this time, too: 12:50.

Yes, it happened on a train,
this strange adventure.

And it happened to a Miss Jenkin:

an elderly spinster, a very independent mind,
who was travelling north.

And she'd left the main line,
was on a little sidetrack.

All of a sudden there was a bump
and a bang and a crash

and one of the coaches
had run off the... rails.

Well, there was nothing that could be done,
the people got out, about 30 of them

and they piled into the waiting room
of the station...

a very little, local station.

Well, Miss Jenkin...

couldn't stand that,
she couldn't stand sitting in that...

waiting room and hearing all the people talk,
some of them already a little hysterical

though nobody was injured in the least,
just shaken.

And Miss Jenkin had one very curious habit

that she always looked her door,
no matter where she was.

Couldn't go to sleep,
she couldn't go to bed

unless her door was locked.

In a friend's flat,
in the country house visit, wherever it was.

And this all derived from a...

a rather unpleasant thing that happened
to her once in London

when she was alone in a hotel

and she hadn't locked her door,
and some fellow...

mistaking the floor of the hotel,
it's very easy...

he barged into her room,
gave her the fright of her life.

Well, that was that.

But from that moment,
she always locked her door.

And she was very much teased about it:

"Look your door."
"Anything happened since, now?"

"Have you been looking your door lately?"
and all this sort of thing.

"No, I can't say anything's happened yet,"
she'd say...

she'd say,
"But the day may come."

And the day dUcome.

And yes, she was in this...

little mix-up with a little...

accident...

walking up and down the platform.

It was a June night.

There were oil lamps on the station

it was... it wasn't very clear.

And she walked up and down

thinking things over.

She'd been shaking a bit
but she felt alright.

And then she saw the porter,
a little fellow

messing about with some milk cans.

She went up to him
and got talking, of course, and said

"lsn't there a bed anywhere,
within reach, that l...?"

"Yes, I, he said,
"l could... I could provide a bed."

He said,
"l think, yes, I could find a bed for you."

"lt's about a quarter of a mile walk
across the moor."

And he told her exactly where it was,
in a little hamlet.

And she couldn't miss it,
and the door would be left open:

all she had to do was to go in and...

sleep.

"Five shillings be alright?"

"Yes," he said, "five shillings."

And she noticed that he had a...

pockmarked face, well he had...

smallpox, you know, probably cured.

And then she started off,
this independent and rather plucky old lady.

Half past twelve, by this time.

Using a...

umbrella as a walking stick
and clutching her bag

holding her bag very tight.

And she soon came to this village... hamlet,
only three or four houses.

You couldn't mistake it, "Two-storey house"
he'd told her, and it was a two-storey house.

She went in...

and at that moment, as she went in...

for the first time,
she had a feeling of uneasiness.

She was, well, she'd been rather bold
doing this all by herself, and so on.

But she dismissed that,
there was the candlestick...

picked it up, lit it, went upstairs.

There was the door.

Looked in... yes,
it was a room of sorts, a sort of bed.

It didn't look very clean and nice,
but anyhow, she could lie down.

And that's what Miss Jenkin did.

First of all, she locked that door.

It was a very big key.

It made quite a noise, but she locked it.

Then she searched the room:
under the bed, in the little cupboard

where anything could hide.

Nobody in the room, it was dead empty.

Well, there she had this night to spend.

And she lay down on the bed.

It was a rather high bed,
a little difficult to climb up onto

but there she lay...

quietly, thinking things over.

"L've had more of a shock
than I realised."

She knew that by now, but she was
in normal control of her faculties.

And as she lay there
just thinking over things

she heard a voice...

The voice said, very quietly,
"Look your door."

It gave her a jump, you know,
but she had looked her door.

There was nobody in the room,
she couldn't understand but she got up...

searched the room again,
also the cupboards and under the bed.

There was nowhere much to look.

She couldn't understand it, quite.

And then she got help because she saw the...

lower latch of the window was open.

It was just noise outside, of course.

She walked up to the window,
looked out into the dark night...

err... very quiet, no wind,
nothing moving, not a sound.

"Look your door."

She lay down again.
"Of course," she said to herself

"l must have..."

"...spoken those words to myself,
I was thinking about it."

"lt's always in my mind:
Lock your door."

"And I've no doubt I just said it to myself."

"Yes."

And there she composed herself and thought,
"lf l can get to sleep, all the better."

And there she lay...

"Lock your door!"

lt was so loud and so authoritative

that she didn't hesitate an instant.

She didn't argue or think or anything,
just slithered off that bed

like a two-year-old

reached the door...

turned the key.

The door wasn't locked.

It was one of those keys,
you've got to turn it twice.

She heard the further click, yes,
now it was locked.

She was quite sure.

Then she heard another sound...

soft, quiet, in the house...

she knew what it was:
it was boards creaking.

Somebody was coming down the stairs.

She heard the steps come along.

She heard them stop outside her door...

she heard the brass handle of her door...

click a little

and the door was pushed a little,
but the key held.

It was locked this time, it held.

The steps went on,
went down into the well of the house.

Evidently something's stockinged feet...

The porter had come back, perhaps,
she didn't know, she'd got frightened.

She went in there, closed the door,
she knew he'd come back.

He did come back.

Tried the door again, went upstairs.

And the house fell
into complete silence again.

She then came to the conclusion that

she wanted to get out of this house.

The railway station now held a...

attracted her.

"Anywhere except here."

"There's something wrong with this house,
I don't like it."

She waited a bit...

She crept out...

She tiptoed across the yard

and in a moment, she saw...

the little path across the heather

which was the way to the station.

And the moment she was out, out of that house

she realised, I think,
for the first time the full horror

that had been slowing creeping over her,
Hmamwws

She hadn't realised it at the time

but there was something there
thatjust made her flesh creep.

And now that she was out
in the scent of the...

June night, it revived her enormously.

And as she walked along,
as fast as she could, along this path

she just thought over
what had happened to her, along there

in the house.

Extraordinary voice...

perhaps she does it, herself,
for all she knew: she couldn't explain it.

Her mind was very busy
with the memories of that...

horrible room.

And then she came to the station.

The station was quite quiet and deserted,
the platform empty.

Just the same oil lamp.

And she walked up...

cautiously, rather...

to the door of the waiting room

and peered through the upper half,
it was of glass

and was rather surprised at what she saw
going on

for all these people in there,
must've been nearly 30 of them

instead of screaming
and being a little hysterical

were enjoying themselves
with cups of tea.

She saw Thermoses about
and people were munching food.

Well, she was rather surprised,
and then she saw the explanation:

the padre was there

no doubt the village vicar.

He'd come in.

And as she peered through the...

upper half of the glass of the door

he caught her eye.

Somebody pointed to her,
he'd been in the train with her.

Up he came to the door and opened it.

And he was very kind
and gracious and polite

and sweet to her.

And he said, "You must come in, Madam,
and have a cup of tea."

"l heard of this accident..."

"...and, of course, I got down with my wife
as quick as we could..."

"...with Thermoses
and as you see, we're having a little..."

"...refreshment."

"Oh," she said, "that's very kind,
I would like a cup of tea."

"And you must be very tired, now,"
said the padre, "you've..."

"...been walking about all night, have you?"

"Oh no," she said, "not at all..."

"...l had a bed."

"l had a bed."

The padre's face showed...

a good deal of surprise
and he was rather puzzled.

"You had a bed?"

And she told him all about it:

how the little porter had guided her
and how she'd used the room.

She didn't go into the details about
Lock your door, or anything of that sort

she just gave him the facts.

"Well," he said,
"that's very interesting indeed."

"You'd like to know perhaps a little about
that house, would you?"

"Very much!" she said.

"Especially as l left five shillings
on the..."

"...mantlepieoe, which I hope
somebody will give to the owner."

"We agreed on that fee."

"Oh yes," he said,
"that will be easily managed."

"But now, listen to me a moment.
It's very interesting..."

"...but that house has been unoccupied,
you know, for 20 years."

"When I first came here 20 years ago..."

heard rumours about it,
it was said to be very haunted."

"l didn't take much interest in it but..."

heard stories about
a figure being seen ranting there."

"l am a little interested
in that kind of thing..."

"...and l actually went there myself
and spent a night."

"Nothing happened,
I didn't see anything," he said.

"And..."

"By the by," he said,
"you'd like to know, perhaps that..."

"...we haven't got a male porter, here,
at all."

"The little man you described
with the pockmarked face..."

"...he's not been here for..."

"...0ver 20 years!"

- "Really?"
- "Yeah, yeah."

- "Well, what about it?"
- "That's rather interesting."

"Yes," he said,
"l don't want to shock you, you know."

"There's nothing to be afraid of, but..."

"...there's a very bad story
behind that house..."

"...which started, of course, the..."

"...legend of its being haunted
and all that sort of thing."

"But the man who..."

"...lived in that house was a little porter,
that's quite right, years ago..."

"...and there was a murder in that house."

"ln fact, there were two murders
in that house."

"And he was..."

"...suspected."

"He was arrested, he was tried and..."

"...he was hanged."

"That's the story of the house."

"But for all these years,
nobody's lived in that house..."

"...except a group of..."

"...well, a group of amateur people."

"Amateur psycho-researchers, you know?"

- "You know what I mean?"
- "Yes," she said.

"Well they came
and took it for a few weeks and..."

"...slept in it and spread stories
of what they'd seen and so on."

"But that house is still..."

"...so dilapidated, you may have seen,
that it's quite uniiveabie in."

"And..."

"...that's the story of that house."

"Well," she said, "l'm very glad to have..."

"...very interested, at least,
let me say, to hear all this."

"And I can't explain a lot of it, of course."

"No," he said, "well, I wouldn't try to.
Have your cup of tea, now."

"And eat something, we've got an engine
coming along now, in half an hour..."

"...so you'll be able to..."

"...get on with yourjourney
and so will the others..."

"...and they'll be very glad to, too,
l am sure."

Well, she thanked him very much

and he said...

"Another time, l'd be a little careful,
you know, about..."

"...sleeping in places you don't know about,
it is a little risky, isn't it?"

"Yes," she said...

"of course, it is, but I wouldn't have missed
this for anything."

"Well," he said again,
"you're a really brave woman."

The engine came,
in due course she got home.

Several... well, a couple of weeks later

got back to London to her friends.

And of course, what rejoiced her,
what delighted her so was that

now when people said,
"Do you still lock your door?"

"Yes," she said, "l do."

"And believe me,
you'd be very wise to lock yours, too."

"You see, I was right about that."

"lt's safer to lock your door!"

That's a nice souvenir,
I'm glad I kept that menu of the ship's...

erm... meal, and the signatures on it.

There were one or two queer people, though.

One man, I never got his name...

We called him "Fatty" and l see, he still
signs himself "Fatty", the little rascal.

Now, I mustjust tell you...

how I first came into contact
with this fellow, Fatty.

It was my habit, after dinner

to come up to the big smoking room on...
D-Deck, I think it was

and I had my coffee and cigarette.

And I noticed that this big, fat chap

was always in the corner of the bar,
a very long bar

and there he was with a group around him,
a group, I should think of a dozen or 15 men.

And whatever they were talking about

they were absolutely absorbed in it,
some subject that interested them deeply.

And Fatty was the leading talker,
they hung on his...

every word.

And I just wondered
what on earth they were talking about.

Politics? I thought of everything,
but I couldn't guess.

I couldn't hear a word
that would give me a clue.

So, the next night...

I... crept a little closer
without intruding into their party.

And sat down in...

within audible reach of their voices.

It was all clear as a bell,
they were talking gambling:

nothing but gambling, gambling.

And they were obviously big gamblers.

Fatty certainly was a...

a terrific gambler.

And they were discussing
all the places in the South of France.

They were on their way, now, to the Riviera
to all the different places.

And Fatty, the big man, knew them all.
They'd discussed them all, talked about them.

And how they'd go
and what systems they'd use.

Oh, they'd got their systems, too,
of course, systems.

And then somebody mentioned
a little place called...

St Jules, a little place he wanted to...

visit... a lovely little place.

Fatty said, "Oh, there's no good
going there, you know."

"They haven't got a casino now.
They had once."

"Oh," he said, "l'll tell you..."

"Three or four years ago,
that was the hottest spot on the coast."

"They had two casinos going day and night."

"They had every sort of nightclub,
every sort of vice, every sort of horror."

"lt really was a very bad spot indeed."

"But there was a hotel there that l liked:
The Continental, and l always went there."

"And... I was there, one..."

"...well, about three years ago,
it must've been, when I was there..."

"...err... gambling, dancing,
enjoying myself very much indeed."

"l had a wilful dancing partner
whojust suited me..."

"...and she had great hunches
in the gambling game and..."

"...awfully often came right."

"So, everything was very happy."

"l came down one evening
into the lounge of the hotel..."

"...and..."

"...there, who should I see,
but an old friend of mine called Mason."

"Mossy. Mossy, they called him."

"And Mossy and I had been
in a great many adventures in our past."

"He always had ideas, some new invention..."

"...some wonderful stunt
that was going to revolutionise the world..."

"...and make millions, and we'd made
a good deal of money, I tell you, honestly."

"Now and again we had a slip."

"He came up to me, he says..."

'You're here just in time.
I didn't know you were here, how lucky.'

'Lucky for you and for me.'

"Well," he said,
"what are you talking about?" said Fatty.

"What's the new vow,
the new trick now, the new invention?"

'Oh,' said Mossy, 'I've got something
that's gonna revolutionise the world...'

'...and l'll tell you about it,
just listen to me...'

'Skywriting.'

"Oh yes," said Fatty,
"we've heard that before."

"lt's no good to them."

"Can't use it in the daytime,
you can't use it at night."

"You can only use it in the daytime
when there's blue... clear blue sky."

- "No, no, there's nothing in there."
- "Oh, but wait a moment!" said the other.

"You don't know yet..."

"There's something more.
I can use it at night."

"lt's a wonderful invention,
we can use it at night... clouds, anything!"

"Letters a mile long."

"Oh, yes?" said Fatty.

"That's interesting, what else?"

"Now, listen: it's audible."

"You mean, you can hear it?" said Fatty.

"Yes", said Mossy.
"Yes, you can hear the words."

"Very loud and very clear.
It's the most wonderful invention!"

"Think of it, think of... there's ten million
dollars apiece in that for us."

"Yes," said Fatty...

"lt sounds very wonderful,
I'd like to see it."

"l'd like to see it
before I do anything about it."

"Oh," said the other,
"that's lucky, your being here tonight..."

"...because we're having a trial run."

"We chose this quiet little place,
we've got the hills in the back."

"We go up... several miles
where nobody can see what we're doing."

"Put up the apparatus, do the trick."

"And I want you to be indoors."

"12 o'clock, now,
12 o'clock will be about the time."

"While you're indoors..."

"...you'll hear a loud..."

"...bang of some kind, first.
You may not hear it, but probably will."

"Get out, then, get into the open air
and see what's coming."

"Alright," said Fatty... "l'll do that."

"l'll have a late dinner..."

"...and l'll arrange it all perfectly so that
l'm in the open airjust when..."

"...well, when you say, 12 o'clock."

And half an hour later the lorry came round.

Fatty saw all the apparatus: he didn't look
at it closely, he didn't understand it.

And there was the inventor...

and his friend, Mossy.

And he saw them go off...

and they went slowly up that...

hairpin road.

The sound getting fainter and fainter...

disappeared.

It was the perfect place, of course,
for a trial like this: couldn't be better.

Then he arranged his evening,
and he found his dancing partner.

She gambled with him all the time,
she was an admirable companion.

And they had a late dinner
and they went over to the casino.

He kept watching his...

clock, you know, from midnight.

Oh, he stuck to it, yes, faithfully.

And he had great difficulty in getting
his companion away from the dance room

because she wanted to dance all the time,
but he eventually did...

and they went and sat a moment
and smoked a cigarette

in the front there,
all amongst the flowers and the...

it was well-lit, of course: electric lights.

And 12 o'clock came.

Nothing happened.

And... five minutes past came.

Ten minutes past.

Fatty said, "l got anxious,
I thought there's been..."

"...a slip-up somewhere,
some kind of accident, perhaps?"

And then, just as he thought that,
there came a bang

a shattering noise, which might have been
a mountain falling

and made him jump
and made the girl next to him jump

she clutched his arm.

It wasn't thunder,
there were no clouds about.

"Oh," he said...

"l don't know, well,
they're blasting something"

or some excuse like that.

But he was all ready now
and they were sitting out there, smoking.

Then the next minute...

there came a blaze of light
overhead in the sky

that dimmed all the electric lights
on the front there, in the gardens.

They looked up.

"Ahh," Fatty said,
"l saw this shaft of light..."

"...brilliant light, a mile long,
actually it was..."

"...stretching right out of the sea
towards Corsica."

"And then gradually, with extraordinary
speed, too, this line of light..."

"...turned..."

"...made certain movements and turned,
and there were letters."

"And they formed words, two words..."

'Repent! Repent!'

"...blazing across that night sky."

It was a sight for the blind.

And with it...

came the word...

audible, loud, loud and clear:
"Repent! Repent!"

Fatty was frightened, he was rather shocked
and the girl was quite hysterical.

And the next moment...

through every door, both in the casinos
and all the nightclubs and the cafes

people came pouring out
like a stampede of cattle.

And they were all terrified and they all fell
on their knees and began to pray.

You've never seen such a sight!

Waiters, women, men: they were all...

on their knees, he could hear
the great sigh coming up from that...

There must've been
several hundred of them.

As they prayed half aloud.

Praying, praying, praying.

It was something to see a headwaiter,
Charles, he was there, he was the headwaiter.

Something to see a headwaiter
on his knees, praying!

And all the women...
It was a sight for the blind!

And his companion was also
on her knees, praying.

And she was a little hysterical. He...

pulled out some of his notes and said,
"Yeah, you better go inside again."

And she stuffed them in her dress
but she went on praying just the same.

And that went on for some time.

And, err...

he said...

"Of course," Fatty said, "l knew the truth,
I knew the meaning of all this, you know."

"l told her it was a stunt, I told Charles,
the headwaiter, it was a stunt..."

"...and it'll all be cleared up tomorrow
and they'd know exactly the meaning."

"Oh no, they wouldn't believe it,
they wouldn't believe it."

"No, it was the voice... it was the voice
of God!"

"lt came from the heavens,
it came from the sky."

"lt was a warning, a warning!
A warning to us..."

"Course it was!"

And they stuck to it,
you couldn't convince them.

And eventually, of course, with...

time... people got quieter.

And, bit by bit,
they ran off into their hotels

dwindled away and the place was quiet.

Fatty went back, too.

Took the girl to her hotel.

And... the whole place
was absolutely quiet again.

Well, the next morning, he thought the only
fair thing was to go and see these people

and tell them that it was all a stunt
and that there was nothing to be afraid of.

No, they still wouldn't believe it,
they still wouldn't believe it.

This was a warning and they must...

They must repent and behave better.

"Well, it was from that moment
the Reformation of this little place..."

"...St Jules began, and you'll see
l did have a part in it," said Fatty.

"And it's to my credit."

"And now," Fatty went on
as he came to the end of his story.

"There's one very unfortunate thing
I've got to tell you, and that is, that..."

"my friend, Mossy,
and his Italian inventor..."

"...crashed on the way down
that mountain during the night..."

"...and they were both killed."

"So, you see,
the natives of St Jules never..."

"...knew the real effects of the case."

"And they built a church to the voice,
and they put up shrines to the voice..."

"...and spoke of the miracle of the voice,
endlessly."

"And the Reformation of St Jules
really did start from there."

"And I'm very proud of contributing to it."

Fatty took a deep breath
and looked at his group.

And I remember...

while he was talking those last sentences
the chair next to me had been occupied.

Somebody had slipped into it,
but I didn't look.

And then I looked and I turned
and saw a Frenchman

whom I knew on deck, hardly knew,
but just to speak to.

And he was shaking with laughter,
the tears were rolling down his cheeks.

I said, "What are you laughing at?
I don't see anything funny in that story."

"Oh," he said,
"no, perhaps you don't, but remember..."

"...l've heard that story
about a thousand times."

"You knew Fatty?"

"He lived with me, for weeks."

"He was my star..."

"...patient."

"Yes, I was the director..."

"...of the St Jules Lunatic Asylum."

with what dissimulation I went to work!

I was never kinder to the old man

than during the whole week...

before I killed him!

And every night about...

I turned the latch of his door...

and opened it...

oh, so gently.

L put in a dark lantern, all closed...

closed so that no light shone out...

then I thrust in my head.

You would have laughed
to see how cunningly I thrust it in!

I moved it slowly...

very, very slowly...

so that I might not disturb
the old man's sleep.

It took me an hour...

to place my whole head
within the opening so far...

that I could see him as he lay upon his bed.

Would a madman have been as wise as this?

Would he?

Would he?

And then when my head was well in the room...

I undid the lantern cautiously.

I undid itjust so much
that a single thin ray fell upon...

the vulture eye.

And this I did for seven long nights,
every night, just at midnight.

I found the eye always closed...

so it was impossible to do the work.

For it was not the old man who vexed me...

but his Evil Eye!

And every morning when day broke,
I went boldly into his chamber.

- (KNOCKS WALL)
- And spoke courageously to him

calling him by name in a hearty tone
and enquiring how he had passed the night.

So you see...

he would have been
a very profound old man, indeed

to suspect that every night...

just at 12...

I looked in upon him while he slept.

On the eighth night, I was more than usually
cautious in opening the door.

Never before had I felt the extent
of my powers and my sagacity.

L could scarcely contain
my feelings of triumph.

To think that there I was...

opening his door, little by little

and he not even to dream
of my secret deeds or thoughts.

I fairly chuckled at the idea.

His room was black as pitch.

I started to undo the lantern.

When my thumb slipped upon the tin fastening

and the old man sprang up in bed,
crying out: "Who's there?"

I kept quite still and said nothing.

For a whole hour, I did not move a muscle.

In the meantime, I did not hear him lie down.

He was still sitting up in bed, listening...

just as I have done, night after night

hearkening to the death watches in the wall.

Presently, I heard a slight groan...

and I knew it was a groan of mortal terror.

It was not a groan of pain or grief, oh no!

It was the low, stifled sound that arises
from the bottom of the soul

when overcharged with awe.

I knew the sound well.

Many a night...

just at midnight when all the world slept...

it has welled up from my own bosom,
deepening with its dreadful echo

terrors that distracted me.

(CLOCK CHIMES)

I say I knew it well!

I knew what the old man felt
and I pitied him

although I chuckled at heart.

I knew he had been lying awake
ever since that first, slight noise.

His fears had been ever since
growing upon him.

He'd been trying to fancy them causeless,
but could not.

He had been saying to himself:

"lt's nothing but..."

- (CHIMNEY WHOOSHES)
- "...wind in the chimney."

"lt's only a mouse crossing the floor."

"lt's only a cricket
that has made a single chirp."

Yes...

he had been trying to comfort himself
with these suppositions

but had found all in vain.

Death...

with his black shadow before him

had caused him to feel...

although he neither saw nor heard...

to feel the presence of my head
within his room.

I waited a long time, most patiently.

And l resolved to open a little...

a very, very little crevice in the lantern.

So I opened it.

You cannot imagine
how stealthily, stealthily, until at length

a single dim ray like the thread of a spider
shot from the lantern and fell upon...
