An historic
church in Llanelli

has been ravaged by
fire this evening.

Fire crews from Llanelli
and surrounding areas

are continuing to
battle the fire.

The search continues
for an American filmmaker

and her companions
who went missing

while exploring an
abandoned church in Wales.

Police are
investigating the disappearance

of several filmmakers from the
Carmarthen Bay Film Festival

in Llanelli, Wales.

Hollywood producer
Jamie Lee Smith

is among those named missing,

along with English movie
director David Campion

and several others.

Adding
to the mystery is

that the location in question

has subsequently
burned to the ground.

It's not
been confirmed whether

or not the missing
filmmakers were in the church

at the time of the blaze,

but there was evidence
found suggesting

they were in the
church just before

or during the tragic fire.

Crowds have
gathered in the streets

to watch the dramatic blaze

just as the roof
collapsed under the heat.

The fire's cause is unknown

but they haven't
ruled out arson.

Police officials and fire
department arson investigators say

they'll issue a full report

as soon as the
investigation wraps.

Interest in this story
has exploded worldwide

as officials consider
any and all motives

and causes for
the disappearance,

including occult activity.

Witnesses report
seeing faces in the fire while

the church was burning.

There is
a lot of controversy

surrounding the fire and
the disappearances too.

A source has come forward

have been since the beginning,

as well as a film reviewer,

it's great when you get to
support independent talent,

you see these young, creative
directors coming up and

it's just a chance, I suppose,
to feed them information,

to support as much as
you can, really and

just take it from
there and hopefully

you see the bright new
stars of the future.

This is a film about
my last day at school,

because it was my last
day at school and I wanted

to make a film,

so this is it.

So, what was your favorite
part about making the movie?

I think my favorite
part was when the camera

almost fell off the gate.

It fell off and I
got scared for a bit.

So, what made you film
your last day of school?

I had my camera in school.

can say about your film is

Yeah, my name's Kelvin
Guy, I'm the CEO and founder

of the Camarthen Bay Film Festival
and the John Haven award.

Well, back in 2006,
I started to research

a relative of mine, a
guy called Garth Hughes

who was Wales very first
Hollywood silent film star.

So I made documentary
about him and through that

it kind of kindled my interest
in film and all things film.

Through that, I decided
in 2011 to found

and start a film festival here
in Llanelli Camarthenshire.

The 2015 festival was
definitely a milestone for us.

We had the submissions rising
from 140 the previous year

to 208 for this year's
festival, which is a huge jump

actually from our first festival
with only 35 submissions,

so definitely rising submissions,
definitely a rise in

people actually attending.

I was walking past
one day and I said,

well, I'm gonna take a
look and see what the score

is and things and was
having a look around

and I saw something
kind of on the floor

and picked it up and could
see that it was a tape,

and I decided well, I may
as well have a look and see

what's on this tape
and that's it really,

that's how I came
across the footage.

I'm Reverend Dr. Eric Benson.

I am a professor of history
and comparative religions

and currently serve as
the director of the Center

for Celtic Community.

I received a
telephone call about

some memory card, some
video clips that were found

at a church and

it seems like a
complicated project but

the more I heard about it,

the more intrigued I was.

I am the owner and
manager of the hotel.

So, it's been in the family
for five generations,

although we start
very young in Llanelli

and we start procreating,
so it's actually only been

in the family since about '89.

So every year we have
a film festival here.

I mean, I don't watch any of
the films, absolute shite but,

a lot of people do like
it, so that's where I met

some of the film makers that
we've had here and that's

how I know Gary
and that other lot.

This is the sort of
edge of the estate.

That's where we buried the cat,

pretty much, actually, he
was only a little cat but

did a job.

This wall, I had that put in.

A lot of people thinks this
looks like a castle wall,

Americans mainly, wouldn't
know a castle if it bit them.

see what it was like and

them to the church to see

With all of the break-ins
happening at churches

and religious centers
throughout Wales

over the last couple years
that have been attributed to

Wiccan practice, black
magic, witchcraft,

the townspeople are very
concerned and are not

quite sure if maybe the
disappearances or even

the fire might not have

some sort of
supernatural connection.

Supernatural,
no, there's no way.

I don't believe in things
like that anyway and

all I'm interested in, really,
is not putting people off

coming to the town but
encouraging people to come

to town for other
reasons rather than

supernatural kind
of nonsense, really.

Yeah, yeah, a lot of
people ask about the history

of witchcraft in the area.

Now, I don't know
that much about it but

we've had a couple of witches
stay here in the hotel,

not really, not real witches
just old slags, really and

that's not the same.

Trees, that one, they look
a bit like witches actually.

Just now put it together now,

this is a witch theme,
definitely, isn't it?

Not specifically with
the church but in Llanelli,

all of the time, always
hear about things,

there's the one about the
great bear living in the woods,

which is a bit of
a monster story.

Apparently it goes around
with like arms twice

the length of men and
all sorts of things,

a bit scary, that's in Llanelli,

obviously the highways above
the sky, where the UFOs,

hence the exploding one,
that went into the church,

enough said and the ghosts,

it's a real hot
spot in Llanelli.

I mean, there is a history
of supernatural stuff

in this town, yeah.

They say there's witches
who still do stuff around,

there's ghost and
things like that,

what have I seen, I don't know.

I mean, I remember,
I remember one time,

I was about 15, couldn't
have been older than 15,

I was coming home from football
and I go through the park

to get back to my house and

there was no light, just
a little bit of moonlight

and there's no one around,
there's no one around,

out of nowhere I start
hearing this noise,

it's terrifying,
it's terrifying.

I don't know what it was,
well I found out what it was,

it was a dog doing another
dog but up until that point,

it was horrific,
thought it was witches

but it was just dogs screwing.

I mean, over the years
I've heard of no supernatural

occurrences in the church, we've
had some unusual incidents,

I mean, I can remember being
there at a wedding where

the three bridesmaids were
busy being sick in the vestry

on their way into the
church but that was down

to a hen night rather than
anything supernatural occurring.

I mean, there have been stories
about supernatural things

and witchcraft locally,
those stories that we used

to get from time to time
in the local newspaper

and we've had stories
going back over the years.

I remember there was a
cell of satanic worshipers

in the Kidwelly area but
there have been these stories

circulating but nothing identified
with the church itself,

certainly, I've never heard
any story of supernatural

activity there.

This is so scary.

something that sounds like
it's coming from one direction,

be coming from somewhere
entirely different.

They say they felt that
it was coming from inside

the church, there's really
no way to tell on what

we have here.

I ran back to the hotel
because I got scared and I

wet myself and I

checked out and I went home.

During the time
of the Black Death,

a few centuries ago,

all the children in
the local village

disappeared overnight, no
one ever saw them again.

It's been quite well documented,

there's been many
books, documentaries,

TV programs about it, it's
very well known here in Wales.

I mean, Wales itself is
got a history of witchcraft

and paganism, during the, I
think it was the 17th century,

when the crusades were
happening, all the English were

burning their
witches to the stake

but in Wales, we would
welcome them and we would

give them safe haven and

so yeah, I know a lot
of people find it funny

and they think it's a bit
silly and a lot of people

don't believe it but

it did happen, it's
part of our history and

I seriously don't believe
that people should

be so quick to judge.

I think they should

come down and experience it
and make up their own mind.

Yeah, I mean, basically, I
walk past the building everyday

on my way to work, so you
know, it's been in estate

for about 10 years or so, it
hasn't been used for anything,

so we've done stories fairly
regularly with the paper,

calling for it to be cleaned up

and then this happened, so
it was pretty sad really

and yeah, it was really
mysterious when we heard

that they'd gone missing
right after the film festival.

We didn't know what to
think about it, really.

You know, the fact that no
trace of them has been found,

obviously the church
fire happening

so soon afterwards as well,

but yeah, it drew a lot of
interest to Llanelli here.

Again, there's been a lot
of theories floating about

on what happened to them,
whether it was something

paranormal or whether
it's just some sort

of elaborate hoax but

I guess time will
tell, you know?

I believe that maybe at
first, the filmmakers going

in there were intending to be
foul play and then ended up

to be supernatural means
of them actually dying.

I've had a few experiences
that made me believe

in the supernatural.

I've been around friends,
we've had the Ouija board and

I've had weird marks left
on them because of it

that they can't explain
and just things around that

that really spook me
out and make me believe.

Was there any
supernatural aspect to it?

I don't think so.

I mean, it was, it was solely
motivated by greed, I think,

just after money, I mean,
I've heard some things about

some supernatural aspects
of the church itself

but I don't think that had
anything to do with it,

to be honest.

Well, I've had an
experience, not in the city,

in the past I can't
explain and I know friends

of mine have had experiences,
especially the friends

who live in the
area in Llanelli and

yeah, I mean, I can understand
why people would think

that it would be something
supernatural because

there's a lot of
things that go on,

there's a lot of haunted
places in Llanelli and stuff

like that and there's
reason for that.

It's the history.

With all of the
increase in break-ins

to religious centers,
churches, over the last

couple of years
throughout Wales,

locals are concerned that
the events that took place

might be attributable to

dark arts, to witchcraft,
disappearances,

mysterious church fire, it
is an unusual circumstance.

I've spent most of my whole life

dealing with the
issue of faith and

believing things you can't see

and there are
things in this story

that I don't understand.

If these filmmakers are
investigating the church

out of fun and encountering
locals playing pranks,

pulling tricks, that's
harmless, it's a bit of

midnight mischief but if
there really is something

supernatural going on there,

I don't believe they fully
understand the danger

they're walking into.

What is this?

Witches were often ascribed
of having magical powers

to do good or evil, even to
the extent of creating illness.

Massive plagues were often
attributed to the presence

of witches or those who
practiced the dark arts.

The Black Plague, for example,

there were those that felt
that there was a evil element

to the Black Plague.

Physicians of the time would
wear masks, hideous masks,

designed to ward
off the evil spirits

which might be
contributing to the plague.

see that keeps popping up here,

it looks like it could
be a poppet doll,

an effigy, in witchcraft, a
doll like this would be created

to represent a person.

It would be made out of straw or

old fabric or even
herbs or potatoes

and you would do things
to the doll with the hope

in the black arts that
what you do to the doll

would happen to the person
that doll represents.

If somebody's
making a poppet doll

and going to this much attention
and detail to make one,

definitively that somebody

my friends, those

to find them and
it's important to me,

A lot of people bring this up,

there were the
faces in the fire,

in the smoke that
proved that something

creepy going on there.

Here's my theory on that, right.

If you're on fire,

as a person, right and
the fire's coming up

and your face gets burned off,

it's actually gonna float
up, innit, 'cause of heat,

and then that was probably
just melting faces.

Nothing creepy about that.

Again, I say that out
loud and that just sounds

more horrific than it is

but it's better than

they saw different things
in the flames that night but

I think you can see lots
of things if you look

at clouds in the sky,
you see different shapes

and different faces and so on.

I've feared people,

got still photographs
and it appears to show

like the face of the
devil in the flames

think it's a bit like

the theme music
from Roald Dahl's

Tales of the Unexpected
where he would flicker

in flames and people
would see ghostly figures

dancing about in there,
the people would see

lots of different things.

it's nothing to do with

explained by pareidolia,

which is sort of the
scientific explanation

for why people see faces

but it can be explained.

all the coverage went
out about the fire,

there were some pictures
came out that appeared

to show faces in
the flames, which,

especially on our social
media feed on Facebook,

a lot of interest, people
speculating on it and

no one knew quite
what they were,

people were saying they
were ghosts from the church,

from 100 years ago or
so but it was a bit

of a mystery really.

People have put forward
different explanations,

but who knows?

I think there's something
supernatural involved.

I think, because Llanelli
is quite a hot spot

for UFOs and things,

so I think it's
actually satellite,

I think there's like an
intergalactic kind of

mish-mash going
on, bit of a battle

and maybe one of them kind
of exploded over the church.

It's been damaged by

it's impacted the digital data

but there is enough there
to be able to see something,

something unusual.

People might attribute it
to being a shadow person.

Shadow people are thought
of in several ways.

They're either conjured up
through occult practices

or they could even be inhumane,

going back to the concepts
of the animistic religions,

something not human ever.

There are a lot of shadow
people who are caught on film

around the world, this
is very impressive

and very disturbing and

it seems very real.

I think the rest of the
group was inside at the time

of the fire, they were
still in the church,

they'd gone in by that point.

started the fire

and whether they got out,

however if they were
trapped inside the church,

it's unlikely that they
would have got out,
