I am in New York City,
where dreams come true.

We're seeing places, taking
pictures, eating ice cream

and just having a good time.

I mean, just look at us.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't happy

but I would also be lying if I said I was.

I just went through a divorce.

It's funny how you can feel all alone

in a city of eight million people.

And those actually are not my kids.

They are my niece and nephew
spending the weekend with me.

My sister felt that
they would distract me,

which they are and that's a good thing.

Things fade, memories
linger, and time flies.

I often feel sad and complain
about the challenges I face

and wonder what gave me the
strength to overcome them.

And one reason that stands
out is my grandmother.

She always said, "We cannot
change what is meant for us.

"All we can change is our attitude."

So I decided I must tell them
the story of my grandmother

as it will help them in their own lives.

My niece was actually
named after her, Yadvi,

short for Yaduvansh.

I started telling them
about her, showing pictures,

and they really got curious.

But before I could them them about her,

I decided I must tell
them how she was raised.

Her father, Maharaja
Bhupinder Singh of Patiala,

was one of the world's 10 wealthiest men.

He ruled the kingdom of Patiala,
Punjab from 1909 to 1938.

He was considered one

of the most influential kings of his time

and was known for his lavish lifestyle.

He united and led all
of the rulers of India

by serving as Chancellor
of Chamber of Princes.

He was known internationally.

He is considered to be the
first Indian to own airplanes,

one of them being a
Wright Brothers' model.

He owned one of the only
six German Maybach cars

at that time, gifted to him by Hitler.

Once in Europe,

when the Maharaja visited
a Rolls Royce showroom

and inquired the price
of the high-end model.

The salesman mocked him

and said he would not
be able to afford it.

The angry Maharajah bought

all of the 20 cars from the showroom,

cut open their roofs,

and began using them as garbage trucks.

As soon as the Rolls Royce
Company received news

of their brand being humiliated this way,

the company apologized to the Maharajah

and requested him to
return the garbage cars

so they could in turn gift him

with newer model Rolls
Royce cars at no extra cost.

He had a custom-made necklace
by famous Cartier Jewelers

which was the largest
single commission Cartier

had ever executed from a single client,

being worth $25 million at that time.

He was known as a great sportsman

and owned the highest
cricket ground in the world

at Chail, Himachal Pradesh,
which was built by his father.

He donate the famous Ranjit Trophy,

which is awarded to Indian
cricketers till today.

In those times, to maintain alliances,

kings had many wives and
this was his favorite wife,

his third wife, our great-grandmother,
Maharani Vimal Kaur.

From here come the story of my
grandmother, Princess Yadvi,

also known as Princess Alice

which whom I lived 16 years of my life.

(gentle music)

Now looking at the family
tree, here is Princess Yadvi,

her two brothers, Prince
Michael, Prince David,

and one sister, Princess Kuku.

(mystical mournful music)

the Muslims, the Sikhs and the Christians.

And I've decided that we
all should get together

because we know they're all
different paths of the same god.

And together, with the
spirit of community service,

like we Langhar in the Sikhs,

which make sure there's mass feeding,

we must combine to provide
the basic necessities

to all who need them.

As ruler, you must be wise
and just and fair always.

Always act the same with
commoners and aristocracy alike.
