the story of richard harris the

limerick-born film actor

has something of a fairytale touch in

that he has become one of the big names

in the industry

almost overnight richard what have you

got i i

uh i'm inclined to present that i'm in

on my eighth professional year

which one would you consider has been

overnight i think

his drinking days

if whatever happened in that period he

says just have to write that off

and i apologize in advance

i think some older actors like to be

imperious and kind of appear to be

senior

and i don't know none of that with him

he just like wanted to make me

laugh and make sure i was having a good

time when he came into the room i mean

the amount of presents the guy had

and uh it wasn't just his size there was

something magical about him

and he didn't mess with richard harris

you know you see he didn't mess with him

that's not that men's words he was a man

you know

he'd he'd knock your block off if you

were

a bit out of line you know

you're all very welcome

to the seventh richard harris

international film festival

i think the legacy of richard harris is

incredibly important

and richard did give a hell of a lot

into this city

and and we see this as being part of it

you know

i'm a big fan of richard harris i love

his movies and i love that there's a

film festival

in his name and it's doing so well it's

an amazing festival and it's just nice

to know that you're

included with a bunch of other very very

talented prestigious filmmakers as well

so

it's really nice to be here the feeling

of camaraderie between all of the

filmmakers you don't get it

with hardly any other film festival in

the world

it's also very important that something

as prestigious as a harris festival

is uh in limerick obviously his hometown

but also it's outside of dublin like

i think it's important for limerick to

kind of embrace that legacy of richard

and i think it's really important that

we keep that legacy going

so there was wealth in the family and uh

richard

as a young lad would have inherited that

sense of kind of entitlement that came

with that wealth

ivan the dad expected his sons to take

over that business

so he groomed them for that and it never

happened because

richard who worked for a while in the

storehouse

was just a dead loss i mean he was a

mouse catcher in the storehouse

this huge big big big big barns and

lofts and i ca

i spent my day going with a stick you

see

frightening the mice away from the

flower who's who's pushed because

anyway i thought that all these workers

and millers and all that were sort of

underpaid you know i thought even then i

thought that they weren't being paid

enough so i brought them all out and

strike

against my father and they paraded

outside with signs like your son

said we should have more money

i think the distinctive thing about the

harris family was the obsession with

sports i mean rugby

especially with the lads in the crescent

they were

jesuit educated in primary school and

secondary school

and there was a strong focus on monster

youth rugby and people used to talk

about you know the you passed

the harris household and all you ever

saw was the monster

colors floating on the clothesline

that is my monster schools jersey

that i wore in 1948

he did play rugby he said they were

playing for like the county championship

they had to go like a foot and a half to

keep

the thing going and they got defeated

because they went

a half a foot and they heard somebody

remember

[ __ ] it was a village priest

he definitely had talent in the sense

that

he had the physical stamina and strength

he could have been great and then he was

struck down when he was

15 16 with tuberculosis i was three

years confined to bed

you know and that and then i began to

sort of study and read

and read an awful lot and devour

books and studied acting in stanislavski

in there

and i invented hundreds of people coming

in and talking and i was sitting in a i

was the king of england or i was

the pope or whatever the pope can you

imagine

we were a bunch of students and we

came together and decided to take a

theater in kilkee

so we took the olympia for the summer it

turned out that tikki was our next door

neighbor

and when he heard that we were there he

became a fairly permanent

fixture where did you begin in the

theater

uh do you mean when i got my idea yeah

well i got my idea from a group of

people

the uh you were one of them at the time

went yeah one of the uh

university students who went to kill key

and uh did a season in kilkee and i was

friendly with you all i think undergone

very well and i thought

i'd pick it up from there dicky would

come into the

into the kitchen late at night and he

would do a performance of marlon brando

in on the waterfront

and we were mesmerized by this my

earliest memory of dickie harrison

kilkee would have been as a kid

and him at the cinema he was always in

the back row

with a girl on his arm on a couple of

occasions i've been present

at a place up here called the

amphitheater

and it's like an amphitheater cut out of

the cliff

and then there's a natural stone stage

he would get up and recite poetry and he

would do hamlet

and joyce and beckett and all this um

too much to the amusement of all the

teenagers that were there

you used to take over kilkee well you

did

i tried did you jump off the wall and

kill kevin did i watch jump off the wall

and keep it i kept chopping off a lot of

things

in my life and god knows where i landed

[Music]

i auditioned in central school and rada

and they both turned me down

my last chance was a place called lambda

and i got to the academy and some little

fellow was coming down the stairs quite

small

he said well look the academy is full so

i looked at him

pleadingly if you reject me and you

don't take me in

do you realize i'd be back in limit a

complete failure

i said you've got to you've got to give

me a shot and he called down another

chap it was the vice president and said

you've got to see this guy he said

you've got to see this he is so bad

he said he is so bad he said but his

story is so

pleading he said if he goes home to

limerick he'll be a failure

so we've got to take him in and they

took me in

his life she set up the theater workshop

in stratford in east london she was

making kind of radical plays and she was

looking for new talent and she was a

perfect psychological fit for

richard littlewood she strived

intentionally to find

real behavior on stage she tried to get

that

sense of reality of truthfulness holding

the mirror up to nature as

shakespeare said to make it like life

littlewood had a an actor drop out

of the role of mixer in brendan beans

the queer fella

and really she was in a corner the

character was supposed to be 50 years

old

and richard wasn't even 30 he was in his

20s

he basically said look i haven't slept

or eaten in days i look 50.

and he got the role so that started his

career with littlewood

i once went with the scottish play to

russia

yes and joan littlewood did not in fact

have understudies

and because i was so keenly enthusiastic

to learn my craft

i went to all the rehearsals they got to

russia

and the actor playing the lead

got a sore throat and he couldn't go on

so joan came to me and says you're wrong

i said joan i can't play macbeth

i don't know a line she says neither do

they

neither do they she said they're all

sitting out there they're russians they

won't have an idea

[Music]

you might take a look at this uh and

that's

yes certainly they're set on going to

america like all the rest

still a great country america a whole

page there are about 150 million

inhabitants in an area of approximately

3 million square

miles or to be a great change minnesota

shortly he was a

kind of visionary guy in some ways

because what was about to happen in

london at the end of the 50s was

the starchy dramas those kind of actors

who represented

that kind of class oriented british

culture they were about to be swept away

richard saw that coming and he came in

with that limerick and irish regional

accent and so he was piped for success

you've had a reputation throughout your

career of uh occasionally

not getting on it's pretty mildly with

some of the people you've worked with

yeah very mildly in fact the first

important thing that i found at this was

was brando wasn't even in mutiny

on the bounty where you didn't seem to

get on at all did you well i know i

didn't

that captain's defeat not me

he kept knocking brando but underneath

he respected brando

he knocked him but he he defended him

you know somebody sees you in a fist

fight once but they stood for 20 minutes

nobody made a move

in the fist fight so that gives a lot of

talk you know

when you see him in mutiny on their

bounty for instance with

brando he's having to go

you know i know about the method marlon

you know

would he do a scene with you and he'd

have like that's the camera there

say here and he would have beside the

camera a big board

and the lines would be on the board you

see and that's how he developed a

terrific look at that great brandonian

look

as he's talking to you in a scene and

suddenly he will do this

right that's because that's because he's

looking at the lines

he's reading the lines near kyle harris

uh archul reeve

there was a whole plethora of what you

might call

very male masculine actors who were

working class for you know

in a sense because that's that's the

other thing that you didn't have to be

hoity-toity to

to to break into the hollywood

mainstream and that in itself

was a a great inspiration and if they

could do it we could do it

but we've got to try up with mitch we

can't stick it out here it's the only

chance we've got

what the hell can mix do for us now his

responsibility i warned him

i told him we should have hoofed it back

hours ago it's up to him now

now come on richard was a leading man

there was something quintessentially

irish about him

that just kicked through you know and

and in the sporting life i mean just the

brutality of the performance you're just

a great ape and a football field because

you want me to be like them

you want me to crawl about just like the

rest we'll just have a look at the rest

right good look at them

all right good look at the blue people

around here there's the bleeding man

amongst them

years ago small little film but he

shined in it

and uh it was a good film and that got

him going he kind of

then he went into all kinds of stuff

voight harrison graduated on ashtore

i think the interesting moment for

richard at the time of

this sporting life is the direction his

career would go in or where he would

choose to be

he wanted to do macbeth but he had made

the wreck of the married deer

at mgm with gary cooper and charlton

heston

and he wanted to go back and when heston

invited him back from major dundee

that really is the direction that he

went in i think

ultimately by the time of camelot in

1967

he had chosen the celebrity route over

the accomplishment route

and uh so he wanted to be king arthur

camelot

i know it gives a person pause

but in camelot camelot

those are the legal laws diary gohan

i i just think that's a magnificent

brave

theatrical glorious piece of work even

after all these years i still don't

understand the lyrics

even after conducted for for harris

singing macarthur park

dozens and dozens of times i still don't

know what sounds about but what i do

know is a

magnificent piece of work

you will not be surprised to hear that

um i first encountered him in a bar

we we knew each other socially before

there was ever

any uh any professional engagement and

that came about

uh specifically um because of the song

my boy

i remember thinking harass now would be

a good contender for this

so initially it started off with a dft

student one one song and then that grew

into an album until

the my boy album with that album we did

a bunch of television stuff we toured

in the uk and i most particularly toured

the united states that was the major uh

that was well that was a that was an

odyssey that was

yeah i still have the marks on my back

from that tour

he loved the agility and embraced it as

if he were a rock star

and whatever about uh being sober coming

on stage that

after hours anything meant anything but

there was some very hairy moments

afterwards which probably better draw a

veil over most of those

life

marvelous love affairs i met the most

fantastic women

i i the greatest experiences i

i've been in jail in six six countries

who else can claim that

okay

so

and jean said oh yeah no we've met

before and and

and richard no no we have never met and

gene says yeah no we've we met before

and

he said no no never i never met not i'm

a great admirer of you but he says i've

never

uh but i've never met you he says yeah

we were in the hawaiians together

a picture called the hawaiians that came

out and they were in there

but they weren't in a lot of scenes

together he kept talking about his

drinking days he said i can't remember

he said whatever happened in that period

he says uh just i just have to write

that off

and i apologize in advance

we got drunk together years ago if you

remember dirty nellie's

a drink but he didn't indeed we did we

drank the shannon dry that over

put in here oh god i remember you well

as i was passing out onto the counter

you were still going strong

wonderful he said to me that he he he

he stopped having fun when he stopped

drinking he had more fun when he was

drinking but he had to stop for his

health and everything

he was a he was a wild boozer london in

london

elizabeth to buy a paper yes and i

bought it in dublin

she didn't realize that and and i was

gone for two weeks and my brother called

me this is a true story i swear to god

this is true

my brother called me and he said look

you better get back i think she's seen a

lawyer i said for what is something

wrong she said yeah she's going to

divorce you i said

never he said yes she's going to divorce

you you really better go back

so i thought oh my god okay i remember

standing outside the house

and i heard the footsteps coming down

the stairs i thought oh god what am i

going to say

and the door opened and there was this

really beautiful looking woman with

these amazingly blue eyes

staring humorless thoughtless

into mine like that

and she just looked and i looked her and

i said

why didn't you pay the ransom

i think certainly when he started making

movies for money

he drank to kind of muffle the pain of

that

he was at a stage when he was earning a

lot of money from making those movies

but he was operating so fast that

he was like he could go from a really

rubbishy script

like caprice christopher

you're rushing me i always wait at least

an hour after eating

a rubbishy kind of james bond ripoff

then to

doing you know a man called horse

i think a man called horse was one of

richard's

really truly great films but it seems to

me that you only live to heart your

buffalo

to fight the shoshone and to have your

women

i know you would say to me what else is

there

one day i will be a chief

that scene is he being strung up by his

arms or by his like chest under the skin

and he's just like i mean that

you know that's one of those scenes like

there are some films where

you watch an older movie and you watch

it forgetting that the technology that

exists now didn't exist then

and then that thought occurs to you it's

like how did you

do that back then i mean that's

something obviously it wasn't real

but i'm sure it wasn't comfortable that

weight is being taken somewhere

and even if it's not that if it's any

other party that's not going to be good

so uh

yeah well done well done for getting

through that one

he would rush on then to doing you know

some

junk or he wanted to be a director and

he did that bloomfield that israeli

movie

which was almost unwatchable the

premiere of the film they held it

in the savoy cinema in limerick and he

booked out

dramaale in castle and he had a whole

lot of his pals and

film star friends like lulu and morris

gibbs out at the bee gees

they were all staying in the hotel the

film was shown

and at the end of the film nobody

clapped

he was so disappointed film was it was

absolutely awful

i mean what are the odds you star in

your first movie

you get nominated for a golden globe and

you marry

a man you had a crush on decades earlier

what are the odds of that a billion to

one

richard whenever we were apart would

write

two letters with poetry and prose

explaining his love and if he didn't

have me he would want to sink into a

bottle of vodka and die and he did this

every time i was away he was an amazing

romantic

i think in the 70s he was aware that he

made some

movie choice misjudgments and he wasn't

transitioning

from the star system into independent

movie making the way robert redford was

and he wasn't catching up with the

emerging guys

de niro and duval people like that there

was a change of tone

in filmmaking and he was wondering and

suspecting that he wasn't keeping up

he realized that he had a little problem

in the movies at a certain point

and he no money so he bought the rates

the camelot and toured it

and he used to sell the raffle tickets

like you know he was like an

entrepreneur beyond belief like

that's he'd be at that level you know

what i mean he'd be

organizing the raffle and playing the

king

in camelot you know i think the great

triumph of richard's story is that

he managed having essentially

emotionally and intellectually retired

in the middle 70s or early 80s he

managed

to turn the whole thing around with the

field in 1990.

in many ways hard if you're directing

like you know because he's just

[ __ ] wild and he'd do well things you

welcome back um dickie harris uh having

a fantastic year

the field yeah a lot of fun

extraordinary year

for me yeah yeah so real comeback

unbelievable and they said you were done

yeah they did it's true story when they

actually suggested that i played the

field

the hollywood studio said well is he

still alive

richard as time went on got very

possessive and it became very very

hard to deal with i mean he was so much

better

when we weren't married dove deuteronomy

he wasn't the first choice for the field

ray mcnally suggested to me that

we do the field after my left foot and

i just went off to write a script and i

showed it to ray and he didn't like it

richard read it and then really wanted

to do it you know it was all set to go

and then

rhaegar hill died uh and i think maybe

the film was going to go

by the ways at that stage and i think

harris had been offered the role of the

priest

so they sent it to me to play a

different part play the priest so i read

it

and i said look you know uh if i if

you're going to make a movie of macbeth

you don't ask me to play banquo i want

to make a movie of lear you don't ask me

to play

gloucester i play lear i play macbeth

so i either play the lead i don't finish

things you know like when we were doing

the scene with the widow he had that big

stick and he kept changing it from one

hand to the other you know

uh take he's like what are you doing 20

takes i said because

now i have every combination when you

have that [ __ ] stick

i said i'll be able to [ __ ] cut it

whatever way i like

and he ran up the hill and took his coat

off and started shouting at me

so i was like oh man this is going to be

a tough one

i mean jim wasn't so sure and thought i

was to

hear this he thought i was too aesthetic

that's a joke on itself you bring down

the palladium on that remark

but i had to convince him that i could

do it so i knew

the beginning i was going to play i mean

i started growing the beard right away

cared for richard harrison

[Laughter]

richard harris um more little other one

called

and have two or three points

do you not drink guitar yourself richard

did you ever drink it

it's been nine years to do

two days and 37 and a half minutes it

was

cheap thing

[Laughter]

you know when the horse and carrot comes

up and he says there's the field

he wanted to get off the horse and cart

and go there's the field i was like

nobody [ __ ] farmer will get off the

horse and cart picture

and like there'd be a two or

three-year-old arguments you know but

there was something going on you know

something

really odd like he was so deep in it one

day my father sensed a drop of

rain in the air

and the mother helped us bring in the

hay before it was too late

she was working on one corner of the

field and i was working in the other

but the third day i saw her fall back

kid over so to speak

i called my father i went to my father

knelt beside her in you

knew she was dying she did an act of

contraction into her ear and he asked

god to forgive her sins

and he looked at me and he said fetch a

priest

did you breathe and i said

this spring to him

he is monumental in the movie you know

when i think about it now you know it

doesn't feel like

a part that's structured it's not like

somebody's worked out how they're gonna

play it

it's just this [ __ ] lunatic turns up

and he's as mad as the character you

know

it says who is this now who is this

really and he says is this

joe or is this mike he thought it was

somebody playing a gag

on i said let me send you a script

and he says i don't need to script love

just count me in

little bill you will leave me at the

mercy of my enemies

you've been talking about the queen

on independence day

he said he said i want to start out and

i want to i want to play it like

the posh english and uh and then then

as as i i disintegrate i go into

a kind of a i don't know what you'd call

it a cockney

kind of accent so it was a brilliant

idea

and it was great in that scene where

he's riding out of town

on the coach and the girls are watching

him and he's

speaking at this cockney accent it's

great

you know a lot of savages that's what

you all are a bunch of bloody savages

i think he was a survivor and i think he

wanted to leave a meaningful

legacy and i think in his later years

like with

uh you know the second half of his

career i suppose

with the field and then unforgiven and i

worked for them again a phone call

much underrated film called trojan eddie

where have you been i had to drive mrs

cash home

what did you tell me you did with the

money again

gave it to kathleen his performance in

that film

was absolutely amazing you know we were

shooting this scene

one day in a bar where he he's a very

rough

rough traveling man and you're talking

about having had a fight with a man and

having

nearly murdered them you know you see

those rings

yeah they're my father's rings

i broke a fella's jaw

with that fish one night

it was utterly terrifying

and when he rolled his sleeve up

you know and he was showing me the art

and i realized that what he was doing

was just saying

i'm going to murder you and if you look

at it you see

i'm terrified i never saw a scene so

enlivened by the performance

being irish and if you want your

industry and there is a wonderful chance

here

then you then we we have to we who have

gone abroad and made it and if we can

give some credibility to a picture

you know or help a picture be fine i'm

sure we should do it because

i think we owe it and we've come to the

you know i mean we've come to the end of

our careers now we've had it all

we've had all the glories and the

laurels and all that and we should put

it back

i never met a man so generous with his

support

for the things that were happening there

was no sense of disgruntlement

but a younger generation coming through

he was absolutely supportive and

brilliant and loved and

you know

in a mask the onstura hoard clue took

i suddenly thought about what happened

richard harris because he was so

i had this majestic dignity because he's

he's about six foot four built like a

god like

rugby player and discovered that he was

still

ticking and so i said i love to see him

and so i went to the savoy i look down

the corridor and it's a

long corridor and i see an old geezer

standing there in a night shirt

and bare feet we look at each other

and he said hail caesar

and uh that's how it began caesar

tell me again maximus why

are we here for the glory of the empire

sir

oh yeah oh yes i remember

it's tad fragile at that point

i think todd fragile through good living

i was a little concerned about it but

getting him on a horse is like

[Music]

but he's all right he's a real pro you

know

i really enjoyed working with him i will

empower you

to one end alone to give power

back to the people of rome and end

the corruption that has crippled it

you accept this great honor that i have

offered you

with all my heart now

maximus that is why

it must be you when the script was there

and the director was there he had the

intellectual chops to produce great

performances

down through the years you've made so

many movies 54 54 is it

out of those 54 i reckon that we're

about

eight great movies and the rest were

crap

he didn't want to be remembered for the

two harry potter films

because he was aware that that was kind

of cartoony kind of disney-esque

kind of creation that he did for ella

his granddaughter she wanted him

to play this role that he had turned

down dumbledore

he made a lot of jokes about the hat not

fitting um i think at one point he

like he like his dumbledore hat like

came off a little bit and somebody came

and put it back on he turned to me and

said

this was made for ian mckellen you see

then that was gonna be me but yes i

think he just wanted to make it

as fun for me as he could so the sorting

hat was right

i should be in slytherin it's true harry

you possess many of the qualities that

voldemort

himself praises determination

resourcefulness

and if i may say so a certain disregard

for the rules

why then did the sorting hat place you

in gryffindor

because i asked it too exactly harry

exactly

we had like an animatronic forks the

phoenix

um in one scene and because it was

animatronic he

thought it was a real bird the bird had

like a camera in its eyes so the guys

operating outside could see into the

room

and so richard would go up to it in

between takes and like do stuff to it

and then

the guys outside would respond and play

so it just became this

cycle where we were reinforced where

like nobody wanted i think nobody wanted

to tell him at the end we were like

don't tell him it's not a real bird

it's so weird he likes it too much can i

have your attention please

patience he must have had actually when

i think about it now it's like

we those massive great hall scenes we

filmed them for days

we filmed them for days the you know

trying to organize

350 kids every day to like sit down and

listen

but he would be able to like still

summon the theater projection and the

voice

and would be able to shut us up as soon

as he starts speaking

before we begin the feast let us have a

round of applause

for professor sprout madame pumphrey

whose mandrake juice has been so

successfully administered

to all who had been petrified

hodgkin's disease was uh diagnosed

i think just a month or so before he

died

him passing away was actually i think

the

first person i had known pretty much

that had passed away

i just remember my dad telling me and

and just being like

bawling my eyes out

you know that story of the survival you

heard that one did you

when he was very very ill he was being

taken to hospital and he was being

you know i think i don't know if he was

on a girl you're in a wheelchair but he

was being taken out

of the the hotel next to a long

queue the ambulance comes to pick him up

and they're taking him across the lobby

and he just

leans up on the on the stretcher and he

shouts to the

punters you know he says it's the salmon

don't eat the salmon

[Laughter]

that's funny well he was humorous and

clever till the end if i hadn't been

born i'd have been furious

with god yeah paris was a great idea

right

so it's an easy pf thing like you don't

regret anything right not

the slightest

[Music]

i think richard harris in a sense broke

a mold

he opened the doors to a whole new breed

of actor

i hate the cliche larger than life

thrown about

too easily a lot of the time but with

him

yeah one of the true greats definitely

dicky

did feel that at the end of his life

that he ticked all the boxes

i'd say he was very reconciled on this

deathbed

we'll never see his like again like

there's not that that generation of

actors was

was so special and unique they were the

the sort of

first generation of people who have

massive theater stars and massive movie

stars

that career blueprint is something that

i think the rest of us all

kind of aspire to now you know he was uh
