of what it was until today.

...I was listening to Kendrick
talk about his relationship

with his mentor and
how much it meant to him

and it made me think...about all
the mistakes

I've made in my life.

And I was thinking
what an incredible gift it is

to give someone a second chance.
I mean, just the hope of that.

To get another shot
to do it better.

To bring the best of ourselves
to whatever it is

that we're trying to achieve.

I mean, the hope
of that can mean..

...the difference between
life and death.

Malcolm Jones and I
share an experience

in how valuable
that hope can be.

And how deadly it can be
when that hope is taken away

from someone.

As most of you know,
Malcolm and I

and seven other people
were in a bank robbery

'that turned into a two day
standoff with the police.'

And one of the men
who held our lives in his hands

had with a state of California
cause two strikes against him.

And because that man felt
that he had no hope..

...that no matter what happened
he was going back to jail

for the rest of his life,
two people were killed.

'A husband...and a mother'

'and never made it back
to their families, and I know'

that this law
has been particularly damaging

to this community.

And that's why I wanted
to bring it up here today

for the first time.

Three strikes might work
in baseball.

But it has nothing
to do with life.

We don't need laws that punish
without regard to consequences.

We need to devote ourselves
like Malcolm Jones

has devoted to you.

To fighting for laws
that protect our communities.
