Imperial College

A Female Student Arrives at the Imperial College

Episode 26

Zhuo's Residence

Mr. Zhuo,

Prefecture Court has decided to act.

What do you plan to do?

Let's wait and see what happens.

Yan Yun Zhi and the others don't have solid evidence yet.

Otherwise, they wouldn't just

tail us.

Tell your people to stay put

and lie low for now.

Are we going to keep wasting our time with them?

The salt route has been stalled.

The plantation trade is ruined as well.

What is Xizhao

going to do in the long run?

We're in sensitive times right now.

We have to be careful.

If they get anything else on us,

you and I will both be in danger.

One wrong move and all will be lost.

That's why

we need to remain calm.

Mr. Zhuo,

I suggest you make your decision soon.

Xizhao is only cooperating with the Zhuo family

because there is something for us to gain.

Now, you've entered the court

and gained authority.

But you haven't made good on your promises.

It would do you no good

to upset Madam Zhang.

Why are you here?

I haven't seen you in a few days.

I was worried if you weren't feeling well,

so I came over to check on you.

You're thoughtful indeed, Madam.

Darling,

you've been terribly busy

with work lately.

I prepared some wine and snacks.

Why don't you come to my room to enjoy and relax a little?

I see.

I shouldn't have lost my temper.

Let me do this

as an apology.

Since Madam is sincere,

you shouldn't refuse, Mr. Zhuo.

Thank you, then.

Darling!

What are you doing?

I'm teaching you the rules of the Zhuo family.

See if you would dare

to listen in again.

You...

Come on, Qian Jiu.

Let's go to her room and enjoy the wine.

We shouldn't waste her efforts.

Thank you, Madam.

Zhuo Wen Yuan,

you heartless man!

To think I did all of that for you!

It does smell nice.

Yes.

- Smell this. - Look at this.

How dare you touch me

in broad daylight?

Me?

I didn't touch you!

Are you denying it?

What's a big man like you doing before a perfume stall?

That's right.

You even acted suspiciously.

Your eyes are like a rat's.

I can tell you're not a good person.

That's right.

No, I have to find someone!

It wasn't me!

Listen to me!

It was just a misunderstanding!

I need to find someone!

Stop!

Get him!

Father-in-law.

Why did you ask to see me

all of a sudden?

Son-In-Law,

you're still in the dark.

Trouble is about to befall us!

Why do you say so?

I just heard from a reliable source

that among those Xizhao people who stole the ledger for us,

some survived.

The Prefecture Court is interrogating them in secret right now.

They are about to get a confession!

Is this true?

You, young people, are too rash and careless.

How could you let

the Prefecture Court get a hold of the evidence?

Is your source reliable?

That doesn't matter.

It's better to believe the rumors

than doing nothing right now.

No matter if it's true or not,

we can't let our guard down.

And I heard from Luo Tian

that the government offices around Bianjing

are mobilizing elite officials

to the Prefecture Court.

Doesn't this prove

that they are about to make their move?

Don't worry, Father-In-Law.

I will

handle this.

This...

Young Master.

I was incapable.

I lost track of her.

And I embarrassed you as well.

But Young Master, you know me.

I would never do such an unscrupulous thing!

All right. All right.

We believe in you.

Deputy Chief,

something is wrong with Madam Zhang, after all.

She is definitely someone not to be belittled.

We thought we would

follow her as she tries to make contact with her companions

to find the other hideouts of Xizhao.

But she got away.

That's all right.

Sooner or later, she'll get herself caught.

We can use the evidence we found

on the corpse now.

San Lang,

have you made the arrangements I asked?

I've made

all the arrangements accordingly.

We can leave at any moment.

It's time to reel in the net.

Capture them.

Yan Yan.

Present!

Get the men and come with me.

Yes!

Young Master.

What did you guys find

when you examined the body?

The victim has hard calluses on their fingertips,

but their palms are smooth.

A musician?

Scissors.

Ambergris.

Only Shuyu Hall will use this

in all of Bianjing.

Take him away!

Yes!

His face is oily and covered in herpes.

He must have been exposed to oil and fumes for a long time.

There are calluses on the palms and burns on the back of the hands.

I think...

He used to be a cook.

Discreetly investigate all the inns and restaurants nearby.

See if there are any missing cooks lately.

Understood.

Sir.

I'm back!

Stop!

Get him!

Stop!

Don't move!

There are marks on his shoulders

and clear indentations.

A porter.

Tea

Search carefully!

Yes!

Over there!

Chase after him!

Move!

His feet appear to have been soaked in water for a long time.

Dry lips. Dark skin.

He was probably...

A fisherman.

Fresh fish!

Take that!

Don't move!

Take him away!

Those men have been serving Xizhao for many years.

If the Prefecture Court gets a confession from them,

the consequences will be unimaginable.

Everything we've worked so hard to build in Bianjing

will be ruined as well.

Mr. Zhuo.

Can't you use your authority in court

to help Xizhao overcome this difficulty?

After the incident with Wei Zhan Hong,

His Majesty has grown wary of me.

The Zhuo family won't get involved any further either.

Lest we risk getting ourselves into trouble.

I have never put off

a single thing you asked of me.

I have tried my best to fulfill every one of them.

But now that Xizhao is in trouble,

are you going to stand by and do nothing, Mr. Zhuo?

We are in the same boat.

If Xizhao falls,

will the Zhuo family be able to get away?

I'm in a difficult position right now as well.

Besides,

that piece of information might not be reliable.

It might be Yan Yun Zhi's tactic

to lure us out.

To rush into action right now

would cost us an even bigger loss.

If Mr. Zhuo refuses to help us, fine.

I will report this matter accordingly.

As for what to do,

Madam Zhang will decide.

Take them to the prisons.

Yes, sir!

- Move! - Move!

Hurry up!

Move faster!

Will someone come and save them?

Someone will come.

But they might come to silence them instead.

Qian Jiu.

You're back.

You went out today and never came back.

So I've been worried.

I heard from Mr. Zhuo

that our contact points in Bianjing

have all been destroyed.

I wanted to warn them.

But the Prefecture Court

had already planned an ambush.

I didn't have a chance to tell them at all.

So,

our people

have confessed?

They have captured more of our people again.

I fear the situation will only get worse.

I have gathered men from outside the city.

Tomorrow, we will sneak into the Prefecture Court.

We can't let these people fall into the Prefecture Court's hands.

I've been planning for all these years.

I can't let all my efforts be in vain.

The Prefecture Court came prepared.

It will be a dangerous trip.

Please let me go with you

to assist you.

Qian Jiu.

You've been by my side the longest.

You may be my subordinate,

but I've always thought of you as family.

I can't let you come with me.

If anything happens to me...

you will be the person in charge of Xizhao.

You must lead and restore Xizhao.

Madam Zhang! But...

I've made my decision.

You need not say more.

Understood.

Mr. Zhuo,

you heard everything.

You do not have to be so guarded against me.

We are allies, after all.

I won't stand aside and do nothing tomorrow.

Tomorrow night, I will have my men

cause trouble in Bianjing.

The Prefecture Court will have to send people to solve the matter.

You can infiltrate the cell when the security is loosened.

That will be helpful.

I'll trouble you then, Mr. Zhuo.

You should decide what to do next too.

What do you mean, Mr. Zhuo?

No matter what happens tonight,

the government won't let things go that easily.

You can't stay in Bianjing anymore.

These are customs clearance documents.

Custom Clearance Pass It'll ensure that you can leave safely.

I left some money and land deeds inside the box as well.

Owner, Zhuo Wen Yuan Those will last you for the rest of your life.

So you've planned all of this for me.

I'm just doing this for myself.

So you never cared about me, after all.

Wanchang Banknotes

You sure spent a lot

to protect yourself.

Qian Jiu.

Don't listen to Madam Zhang.

Xizhao is not worth sacrificing your life for.

As acquaintances,

I don't want to see you get hurt.

Please leave.

Mr. Zhuo,

if things fall through,

have you thought about what to do?

Whether I have a backup plan or not,

I don't have a choice.

Mr. Zhuo.

I'm afraid I have to let you down.

Prefecture Court

Young Master,

the Prefecture Court is in a mess right now.

Xizhao is prepared to make their move as well.

This operation must be successful.

Failure is not an option.

Understood.

Sir,

you've returned.

Someone came to make a report earlier.

They said that there was a mob fight on the west side of the city.

Official Yan wants you to handle it.

What?

Again?

What is going on tonight?

These cases keep happening one after another.

Where is Song Luo Tian?

Official Song is taking care of other cases right now.

He hasn't returned yet.

That guy.

Can't count on him when you need him.

Never mind.

Come on, let's make another trip.

Yes.

Let's move.

Let's go.

Where are you guys going in the middle of the night?

Attack.

Could this belong to the head of the Xizhao Group?

Madam Zhang is the head of Xizhao?

How is the interrogation going?

After seeing their leader's death,

they confessed.

They identified Madam Zhang as the head of the Xizhao Group.

Qian Jiu is her right-hand woman.

But they don't know

who was the person in the court conspiring with Xizhao either.

At least we learned something.

Deputy Chief,

has Qian Jiu not confessed

who Xizhao's ally is yet?

She only admitted that she works for Xizhao.

She refused to say anything else.

Let me see her.

I want to ask her about my brother.

So it's your turn to interrogate me, Miss Sang.

Qian Jiu.

I'm not here to interrogate you.

I want to ask you something.

Don't waste your time.

I won't give up anyone.

I'm not here about that.

I just want to know

how my brother died.

He is just a scholar.

He had nothing to do with Xizhao.

Why did you have to take his life?

It has already been so long,

and you still can't let it go.

Fine.

The night is long.

There is nothing else for me to do.

I'll tell you the truth.

I did not intend to kill him at first.

But he went to a place he shouldn't have.

He saw things he shouldn't have.

Excuse me.

I'm here to pick up some medicine.

Spring's Touch

Sir, your medicine.

Thank you.

Name list: Ministry of Justice... Sang Yu accidentally took

a secret letter from Xizhao that contained a name list at the apothecary.

Sang Yu.

Deputy Chief is looking for you.

All right.

We got the name list in the end.

But Sang Yu saw it.

To avoid unnecessary trouble,

I had to silence him.

Why did he get the name list in the apothecary?

Who was meant to receive that name list?

Tell me!

Does it still matter?

Either way, I killed your brother.

If you want revenge,

come and get it.

I am a sitting duck

right now.

You get to decide

if I live or die.

If you miss this opportunity,

you'll regret it.

Tell me.

Did Zhuo Wen Yuan have anything to do with this?

Miss Sang,

Mr. Zhuo is only a cover I sought in Bianjing.

Everything between us is just an act.

There are no feelings whatsoever.

You, on the other hand,

have been leaving broken hearts everywhere.

You make men fall all over for you.

If you came to Qingfeng Restaurant,

you would definitely take the title of the top courtesan from me.

Qian Jiu.

Your leader is dead.

The others have confessed.

Why are you still so determined to hide it?

I will admit to what I did.

But I won't accuse the innocent.

Please leave,

Miss Sang.

It was a night of full moon in early summer.

I asked my friend to prepare some fine wine,

and I enjoyed it with Qian Jiu on the boat.

We had a wonderful time.

Nothing out of the ordinary happened that night.

She even played the guqin for me.

What was the tune

she played that night?

Official Zhuo.

I asked you to cooperate with the investigation.

I didn't ask you to tell me about these things.

Official Yan.

You said

to tell you everything regardless of how detailed they may be.

The clue to this investigation

may lie within these everyday affairs.

Please don't be hasty

and allow me to tell you everything.

That's enough.

I only have one question.

Qian Jiu lived in your residence.

She is a Xizhao thief.

So, you aren't involved in this matter at all?

Then let me ask you something as well.

Official Yan is an official of the people in Bianjing.

Could it be that you were involved in every single case

of fraud, deception, and kidnapping in Bianjing?

Zhuo Wen Yuan,

you're being casuistic!

Official Yan,

I only refuted you once.

And you've already lost your temper.

But ever since I stepped inside this room,

you've kept pushing me.

You treated me like a criminal.

I'm only here to assist you with your investigation.

Do you plan to convict me right here, right now?

You...

Official Yan.

I still have work to do tomorrow.

I shall take my leave now.

Confession

Young Master,

the Prefecture Court has captured Qian Jiu.

This is bad for us.

Yan Yun Zhi is cunning and has a lot of tricks up his sleeves.

I'm worried she will give us up.

Mr. Zhuo.

Are you here to save me?

You're here to send me off.

You shouldn't have come back.

You shouldn't have come either.

You should let your men

handle something as trivial as this.

Could it be...

that you can't bear to let me go?

You should know

what punishments you will face.

But I don't want you to suffer

through all of those.

Mr. Zhuo!

Aren't you worried that I will change my mind

and give you up instead?

Mr. Zhuo,

this is the last joke I will make.

Please take care of yourself.

Qian Jiu has confessed

and signed the papers.

The truth about my brother's death

has finally come to light.

But I don't understand

why she didn't give up

the person behind all of this.

She may never tell us.

I still want to try.

She is determined to stay silent and die.

I don't think she will tell you.

I'll try again.

Confession, Qian Jiu

I've already confessed.

Why have you come again?

Because you're still hiding something.

Xizhao has been committing evil deeds for many years.

Xizhao would not have been able to stay hidden for so long

if they did not have an inside person within the court.

Sang Qi.

You and Yan Yun Zhi

just want justice for Sang Yu.

Xizhao has fallen.

You got what you wanted.

I advise you

to let go of things.

Those who have been working with Xizhao

are still at large out there.

As long as they are still out there,

there will be no peace in this world.

I already have one foot in the underworld.

Matters in this world

have nothing to do with me anymore.

Qian Jiu.

If you can help the court get rid of these vermin,

His Majesty may spare your life.

Even an ant struggles to live.

Do you really not care about your life at all?

They taught me how to kill and how to lie since I was a child.

I've never lived like a person.

I've long been a living corpse.

In this world,

he was the only one who treated me with kindness.

And now...

We can't go back anymore.

Who is that person?

Is he Zhuo Wen Yuan?

Qian Jiu!

Quick, get the physician!

No need.

I've learned poisons since I was young.

This poison

has no cure.

If you knew it was poisoned, why did you still eat it?

Because...

this is the last thing...

I can do for him.

Excuse

me.

I'll take a nap for now...

There will be other ways.

Sir,

we've checked all the officers

who have come in contact with the food.

We didn't find anything suspicious.

To be able to get the poison into the prison without anyone noticing.

How capable, indeed.

Qi Lang.

Did you find anything from the poison?

This poison did not come from Xizhao.

I can't find any other clues yet.

Killing her

to silence her forever.

The person Qian Jiu tried so hard to protect

wanted her life so badly.

I will inform His Majesty of this

along with the other matters in court tomorrow.

No matter what,

we've eliminated huge trouble

for the court by bringing down the Xizhao Group.

Thank you

for both of your help.

How about this?

Come with me to the palace tomorrow.

I'll try to ask His Majesty to reward you guys.

I just want my father to return safely
