Apparently, around 242 B.C.,

this desperate king gave up
all his last remaining gold

so that an Assyrian alchemist
could forge this scepter.

And apparently,
this blind prophet led his tribe

against this powerful forces of evil
that were threatening his kingdom.

All this time and I didn't know

you were into that hokey-pokey
kind of stuff.

Which is why
we have to decipher these symbols

to see what they really mean.

It's an Egyptian word.

It's a creature the ancients believed
could paralyze its victims

with its venom and…

turn them to stone with its glance.

There are passages in the writings
of Pliny The Elder and the Bible,

which tell how the first Basilisk
was born of a chicken's egg,

hatched by a snake during the solstice

in which the stars of Sirius
and the sun are closest together.

I guess that explains why snake meat
tastes so much like chicken.

So, how do we stop it?

[man] No. no, no, wait. No offense here,

but I just want to get the hell away
from this thing.

The legends vary.

Some say that loud noises
can drive it back into the darkness.

Others have suggested
that the sight of its own reflection

can turn it into stone, but…

Apparently, the only sure-fire way
to defeat it is with the Eye of Medusa.

[man] Oh, great.

Well, since no one
seems to have a boom box,

or a big-ass mirror.

that eye thing that you just mentioned?
