if you don't try.

We need something to change

because it just isn't
gonna be a legit prospect

if we don't get more holes.

Hopefully they're gonna see
that as just a minor thing.

So as of right now,
how many more holes can we do?

So, what's gonna determine

if we can keep
on digging or not, Dave?

Hopefully Jason comes back
with some good news

and we can dig
more test holes.

The offseason is critical.

This is almost as important
as the mining season.

I've got to be prepared

and you've got find the ground

that has good gold on it.

If you don't have ground
with good gold on it,

your season is gonna be
a failure.

And so, I've got to get
with it and find that gold.

With the mining season
just weeks away,

Dave Turin is still
searching for ground.

Two days ago,
Team Turin started

prospecting their last option,

the 80-acre Idaho City claim.

The bucket dredge
came back here

between the early 1900s
to about the 1950s.

Partly mined
by the Old Timers,

Dave hopes there's
enough virgin ground left

to make the mine viable.

So there might be
bedrock up this high

- that they couldn't get to?
Yes.

He's already proved

the gravel bench
holds some gold.

That's pretty damn good.

There's at least 20 there.

Remember, we can only
dig three holes.

But a bombshell

from claimholder
Chris Christman

has Dave's prospect
tied up in red tape.

from the Old Timers.

They dredged the hell
out of that mountain.

We're pitting our wits
against the Old Timers,

our experience,
our knowledge, our wisdom.

It's kinda like an island.

a 10-acre island

isolated by valleys
and ancient river benches.

If the island
is an old town site,

too high for the dredge,
it could hold millions.

That is some
damn good looking pay.

This whole chunk is virgin.

Hopefully there's some gold.

Probably the quickest plant
I've ever set up.

Hopefully,
at the end of the day,

we'll have some

Well, here goes
the tedious part.

Got some gold, at least 20,
good size colors.

That's gonna go
right about $20 a yard.

Paying out
at roughly $20 a yard,

the island could yield
millions of dollars in gold

if all 10 acres
is virgin ground.

But that's only one spot.

We got a lot of property
ahead of us still prospect.

That was good gold,

but we got two more to go.

My season depends
on these prospects.

Right now,
the Misfits are homeless.

If we can't make
something happen here,

we may not be mining
this season

and that's something
I really don't

wanna think about right now.

Four hundred miles south,
Fred Lewis' back

is also up against the wall,
tracking down a claim.

Prospects in Nevada
and Arizona
proved disappointing.

And just like Dave Turin,

Fred still has no claim
to call home.

It's the fourth quarter
and I'm calling Lovelock
as our Hail Mary.

Three weeks ago,
Fred's Misfits

tried to prospect Lovelock.

Man, it's wide open.

That's almost 500 acres.

This canyon was just riddled
with Chinese diggings.

Fred tested the old
Chinese miners' tailings.

That's probably about
100 times more

than I thought I would see.

So, we know we could do
a test there.

And pinpointed
two spots at the north

and south ends of the claim

to dig to bedrock and test.

Juan, what's going on?

With no equipment...

...Fred
abandoned the prospect.

Lovelock is my white whale.

Right now,
it's just gonna have to be

the one that got away.

So, this time, we have
our excavator being delivered.

We have eight hours allotted
to dig holes

and to get down to bedrock.

And eight hours
is quite a lot of digging.

Is it enough?
I don't know,

but it's better than nothing.

With time already ticking
on the rented excavator,

Fred, wife Khara,
and Kyle Pletzke

are returning for
a second roll of the dice.

We can't even see
the mountains up there

with this snowstorm
that's more like a blizzard,

we're gonna punch
some holes down here

and see if we can
get to bedrock.

where the two canyons
come together.

The canyon to the north,
Fred, the Chinese,

even on bedrock.

Beginning at
the south end of the claim,

Fred plans to dig 20 ft
down to bedrock

to bulk test the pay.

I'm pretty excited
about this spot.

Fred's been thinking
about it nonstop

since we left the first time.

We have more equipment than
they did a hundred years ago,

so we might be able to
reach locations

that the last miners
here weren't able to.

Things are going pretty well.

Definitely not bedrock yet.

Probably about 15 ft down.

We're almost maxed out
on the depth of this.

I'm at the point
where I'm maxed out.

It's gonna take a hell
of a long time

to dig a step
to be able get down

just a few feet lower.

So, if wanna
take the time to do that

and start moving on.

With a maximum reach of 20 ft

on his excavator arm,
to hit bedrock,

Kyle needs to dig out

over a hundred tons
of overburden

to build a step
and lower the machine.

The step will enable
the excavator to dig deeper,

but will cost precious time.

It would be nice
to get down lower,

but I also
don't wanna us

and only check one hole.

I don't feel
like abandoning this.

What if you hit bedrock?

I would kill myself
to not know what's below it.

I mean, there's nothing
on the thing

that it ain't worth less than

at my arm again.

prospecting season

that this could all

Caliche is a natural concrete-like

sedimentary rock layer
formed by dirt,

gravel, sand, and clay.

For a smaller excavator
like Fred's rental,

it can be nearly
impenetrable.

It's freaking looking
like it's pretty tough.

If I don't feel the pressure
of time right now,

this layer of dirt is gonna
make it even more tough,

knowing that
we only have an hour.

These teeth just aren't
made for going through

some harder layers of rock
like we're dealing with.

We've only got, like, probably
less than an hour left.

He's about a quarter
of the depth we want him at

and he's moving probably about
an inch every three scoops.

If we can't get past
caliche layer,

how are we gonna know
what's below it?

We need to be digging
a lot faster than this.

It's important to get
an early start this year.

The test went really well.
We can't rest now.

The grueling off-road race

consists of 250 miles

through dangerous
desert terrain.

Nearly half of all racers

failed to complete
the punishing track.

Being on my own
and starting my own business,

um, you know,
I-I developed some anxiety.

But with racing,
I calm way down.

You know,
once I get behind the wheel,

in my head,
it's nothing but calm.

Go.

Well, they just
went off the line,

everything was good.

There's really not much
we can do now

until they come around once.

Hey, Kyle,
this is a caliche layer.

Time running out,

Fred Lewis is racing
to hit bedrock

at their north test hole.

Me being brand new to this,

it's not helping my feeling
of unease knowing that,

uh, honestly the clock
is against me

and against my limited skills.

is blocked by
a concrete-like layer

of soil called caliche.

So a caliche layer
is like nature's concrete,

it could be a false level
of bedrock

when you hit it
with your excavator,

you're like,
"Oh, I hit the bottom."

But if you break through it,
it starts getting into

that good consistency
of soil again.

Thank you, sir.

Dude, this could be
a bank vault, this...

You could be breaking
through the door right now.

It's the time to really take
this excavator to the max,

but I'm trying to beat
this hole into submission

before this time runs out.

We got a little bit

than we probably want but,

to an infantryman,

in a 250-mile off-road race,

hitting speeds
of over 70 miles per hour

through dangerous
desert terrain.

With racing,
there's just certain things

that come natural to me,
like tight corners

trying to pass somebody.

That freaks people out,
and for some reason,

I don't have that.

Like, I just go
completely deadpan calm

and, like, no fear.

That is something
that I've had to draw from

and bring to mining, you know,

bring to everything
in my life,

like that calm and that trust
in myself.

It looks like Rick is, uh,

11th overall right now.

You know, I've got
a long ways to go

to where I wanna be,
but if I look back

to where I was when I was 30,
I also never thought

that 40-year-old me
would be where I'm at

and would have given
everything for it.

Nevada is home
to over 50,000 mustangs,

more than any other state
in the US.

Direct descendants
of the horses introduced

by the Spanish
in the 16th century,

mustangs have been tamed
throughout history

and were used as workhorses
by the old-time miners.

There's a cool
horse skull over there.

Oh yeah. Big one.

They occasionally
pass away or get eaten

by a mountain lion.

I got a little whiff
of that one.

He needed some dental work.

But it's pretty cool.
