GOOD EVENING I M ANTONY  ROBART. THIS IS CRIME BEAT.

TONIGHT 18-YEAR-OLD TINA WU AND HER  14-YR-OLD YOUNGER SISTER, THERESA,

ARE THRILLED TO BE IN CANADA  STUDYING ENGLISH FOR THE SUMMER

BUT THE VISIT WOULD QUICKLY TURN  TRAGIC FOR THE TAIWANESE STUDENTS

A big scream come in. Just  a scream. Theresa? Tina?

In my tenure in the homicide squad,  this is one of the most violent

criminal scenes that I've ever attended. I saw is the the blood all over the place

AND THEY WEREN T THE ONLY ASIAN  WOMEN WHO D BEEN ATTACKED .

Police are reminding all citizens,  particularly of Asian background,

that the suspect is still at large and are  being advised to take precautions.

...BUT WOULD INVESTIGATORS BE ABLE TO CATCH  THE PERPETRATOR BEFORE HE STRUCK AGAIN?

Her voice was shaking and she says,  I need to see you right away.

AND NOW, HERE IS An Enigma:  Hiding in plain sight

Jeff: They are very outstanding in their learning,  the period as a student. Every school want them

to go there, to be to be the student. They  also the the uh, the very good at the sport

and the dance and music. Jeff: After we immigrate

to Canada the second year, they the the  girls come to visit Ruby, my daughter.

And then they they have a wonderful time here.  And they thought Canada is the very nice place

for the, for the kids to study and grow up here. Jeff: And then they decide to let Theresa

and Tina, to take the summer school,  to be able to hear to learn English

and also as well as give them a  chance to adapt to Western culture.

They love the people here. You know, people  here tend to be very friendly, especially

that that's how they feel. They love it. Sam: Jeff Chang, through his daughter,

Ruby Chang, became good friends with the Wu  family. They're, they're all well-educated people.

The Wu family s a close knit family. As Ruby Chang  said to me, every time she went there before this

happened, it was a house of laughter. Jeff: They were very easygoing. And

then especially Theresa, you know.  She's the youngest and she's so cute,

very childish and very easygoing. And not  only that, she's really very smart as well.

Jeff: Tina is more, the uh, a little  bit more serious than Theresa.

Antony: Talk a little bit about why they came to  Canada and why Canada was their destination?

Sam: They came to Canada because they believed it  was a safe country, friendly environment, diverse

culturally, and that they would fit in. And  they loved spending that time with Ruby Chang,

Jeff's daughter. And Jeff felt  almost like a second father to them

very, you know, very protective. Sam: They had just settled into a basement

apartment at Bayview and Shepherd. Were taking  English as second language courses, they were

regular visitors. They had dinners  and picnics with the Chang family.

So they just settled in -- three weeks they  were in this country when tragedy struck.

Along with the family dinners and picnics,  Jeff helped the sisters get around.

On the day tragedy struck, that s what Jeff was  doing -- driving them home from a flute lesson.

Jeff: After the flute lesson, I picked them  up. I think this is, this is around nine to ten

...and then the, I, me and my  wife and my daughter and we

just I just brought them back to the place  where they where they live, the apartment.

And I still remember clearly saying, when  I dropped them off, I opened my window, my

my minivan window, and turn and say: Hey, you need to remember to close the

windows shut, before before you go to sleep. Or  once you go into the house. Make sure, because the

window is just right beside the driveway. Anybody  you know who just walked by or drive through they

can easily see from outside. Be careful. So they say, I will uncle, thank you.

And then they are very happy. You know,  they just walked in and say Bye bye.

And then me and my wife and my daughter, we  just go home right away and then go to sleep.

We all sleep during that night, I remember.  And then after 12, I think it's between

maybe maybe one or something -- early  morning, I know. And the telephone rings.

My wife, she's the one who picks up the phone.

Suddenly it s silent when she picks  up the phone. And then, after silence,

a big scream comes in. Just a scream. And then my wife, I remember, she asks...

Theresa? Tina? Nobody answers. Nobody answers.

My wife tell me, she say, Hey, wake up.  Something s wrong. We'd better go take a look.

Because after scream there's  nothing happen. No any response,

from the other end of the telephone. I still can hear, you know,

those screaming. I never hear those  kinds of screaming, you know that.

You just feel there's something wrong.  You need to run over to see what's wrong.

Me and my wife, we just rushed to the scene.  Takes us a few minutes, not too far in between.

So when I go there, I just walked.. I would  I was thinking about maybe I should go watch

through a window, first. So my  wife follow me, follow my step

And then we go there... when I watch  from outside the window, Oh my God. It

s it s awful, is terrible. I don't know how  to describe this, that moment, what I saw.

The first I saw is the the blood  all over the place, the wall.

the splash, the blood on the wall,  and then and then the Tina lying

on the floor. The the blood is just  flooded right beside her body.

And Theresa is leaning on the sofa. And I remember that Tina still seems like she

struggling to try to move her leg a little  bit. I just, I just saw just lift a little bit

and then put down and that was  it. And then never move again.

And then, and then and then Tina, you  know, she open her eyes and close again.

You know I call 911 first. I called  and say, here's somebody, you know,

been killed! And come, you  need to come right away.

And the police vehicle come right away,  and followed by the ambulance and then,

and then, and then the fire truck.

COMING UP INVESTIGATORS ARRIVE  AT THE SISTERS APARTMENT

AND START TO PIECE TOGETHER WHAT HAPPENED...

IT S THE SUMMER OF 2000 AND TEENAGE SISTERS, TINA  AND THERESA WU, ARE IN TORONTO LEARNING ENGLISH.

HELPING OUT IS FAMILY FRIEND JEFF CHANG, WHOSE  DAUGHTER RUBY IS CLOSE WITH THE GIRLS.

WHEN ONE NIGHT, THE SISTERS ARE  VICIOUSLY ATTACKED IN THEIR APARTMENT.

NOW BACK TO An Enigma: Hiding in plain sight Gary: In the early morning hours of July the 27th,

2000 I was on call with the homicide squad. My  partner at the time was Detective Gary Brennan,

and we received a call from the duty  desk with regards to a homicide that

had taken place at 688 Sheppard Avenue West  in Apartment B2. And when I arrived there,

it was a ground floor apartment. The offender  who entered through a ground floor window

climbed through a window that was about 16  inches by about 20 inches into the apartment.

It's a window that you have to drop into, into the  basement apartment, which he did. He tore off an

exterior aluminum framed window covering and threw  it into a neighbor's backyard. He then removed a

flower planter that was on the windowsill to allow  him access to the apartment. Below the entry point

was a sofa, which I learned later the younger  victim, the 14 year old victim, Theresa Wu,

was sleeping on at the time of the attack. Theresa Wu was sleeping on the couch that

was directly below the window. The offender would  know at the time that the apartment is occupied.

He can see her. He also can see that she's  asleep. He knows that he's going to be

confronted by somebody within the apartment. The attack starts with Theresa, and Tina, her her

18 year old sister, is sleeping in one of the back  bedrooms, and she comes running out to to find out

what's going on in the, in the living room  area where her sister is being attacked.

I learned later on in the morning that both  of the victims were of Taiwanese descent.

They were both young Asian women. Jeff: They send them to the Sunnybrook

General Hospital. I think a few hours later, we  hear from the hospital say, Tina didn t make it.

But, Theresa, we still work on it. She should be  fine, but we cannot, we cannot tell you. You know,

until we know all the surgery is completed. Reporter: An autopsy showed that 18 year old

Tina Wu died of multiple stab wounds to her  chest and abdomen. Her 14 year old sister,

Theresa, is in serious condition after  five hours of surgery for her injuries.

It's not yet known if they were  sexually assaulted or robbed.

Investigators hope to interview Theresa this  weekend. She is weak, covered in bandages

and has a breathing tube in her throat. Sam: So when Theresa woke up in the hospital,

she had virtually no memory of this  horrible tragedy, what transpired. And

she woke up in the hospital, she turned to her  close friend and she said, Where's my sister?

And her friend just paused because she didn't  want to break this horrible news to her.

But that pause spoke volumes to Theresa. She  started crying and she buried herself under sheets

because she realized her sister had  sacrificed herself in an effort to save her.

Jeff: I have to identify the body. I saw  Tina. Oh my God, I never will forget.

I say, I'm sorry. I don't know how anyone could  have done this to an innocent girl? Why?!!!

Sam: Jeff was the contact between the Wu family  and the girls in Canada. He had to tell them to

break the news to the Wu family. Jeff: That's the very tough moment for me,

you know, trying to pick up the phone and phone  them. Yes, I did. Tina is rushed to the hospital

and we don't know the situation now. But  now I can tell you, Tina didn't make it.

The mom is crying, crying. And her father  is blaming himself saying, why not stop

them to come here, to such far away, to learn  language, just only for learning language.

Sam: He just heard the mother crying. The father  was distraught. Why did they have to go to Canada?

Why couldn't they have just learned English  here? The father is blaming himself,

blaming the other. Why did we let them go? They  were so upset. This was an extremely close knit,

happy family. They raised confident young women.  They never imagined any of this could happen.

Jeff: So the place they choose that s  supposed to be very safe. They come to

Canada. This country should be safe. Especially  Bayview Village, it never happened before.

The stabbings have caused sorrow in the community.  They are also the top story in Taiwan. Three

network representatives are in Toronto to cover  the crime. Rose Lee is with Taiwan Television:

There are almost over 500 students here for  summer school. They're learning English here. So

it's basically like headline  news in Taiwan right now.

Homicide Detective Gary Giroux says the sisters  endured a horrific and frightening attack:

In my tenure in the homicide squad, this is one  of the most violent criminal scenes that I've

ever attended. And I am urging the public  of this city in the strongest possible way

to rally around this family as  they travel here from Taiwan.

During the life and death struggle in the  girl's apartment. The suspect cut himself

and bled at the scene. Those cuts could  be the key to identifying the killer.

They could be on hands. They could be  on arms. They could be on any part of

this person's body. But we are very  interested in hearing from anyone who has

information that can help us in that regard. Gary: So the homicide is on the 27th of July.

And in late August, I receive a phone call from  the biology section of the Center of Forensic

Sciences. I speak to a biologist by the name  of Monica Sloane, who's a biologist that I've

known for a number of years. She asked me at the  time, where was I physically? And at the time,

the CFS and police headquarters were right  across the street from each other. And I said,

I'm at my desk. And I could tell from  her voice that she, her voice was shaking

and she says, I need to see you right away.

Coming up, police learn this isn t the  first time the killer has attacked

Two summer students from Taiwan,  viciously attacked in their apartment..

Several weeks have passed and police say  the attack may be sexually motivated...

But they have not yet named any suspects. Now one of the lead detectives HAS RECEIVED A

PHONE CALL FROM A COLLEAGUE AND is about  to get a massive break in the case.

WE NOW RETURN TO An Enigma:  Hiding in plain sight.

Gary: I walked across the street to the  center of forensic sciences and I sat down

and I met with her and she said that there  was a DNA link to a violent sexual assault

scene within the same geographic area as the  murder scene at 688 Sheppard. And the linkage

was that semen had been found at the violent  sex assault scene and that the blood of the

offender was found at the Wu sister murder. Scientific link has been made between this case

and a break and enter and sexual assault  scene that occurred in the summer of 1999.

The crimes occurred within a  two mile radius of each other

and both occurred during nighttime hours. Gary: She was a woman of Asian descent. It was

approximately three o'clock in the morning. He  climbed into her home through an open window.

The female victim was alone in the home. She  was sleeping in bed. The offender could see

her lying in bed asleep. He walks past her.  He goes down to the main floor of the house.

He is now armed with a knife that he's recovered  from the desk that he's crawled across. He takes

a pillowcase off a pillow that's in the main  floor of the home. He cuts I holes into the

pillowcase. He puts the pillowcase over his,  over his head. He returns to the second floor,

in the bedroom in which this woman is sleeping,  and he sexually assaults her at knifepoint.

So once we found out that there was a criminal  linkage by DNA from the two crime scenes, there

was an investigative task force that was formed  by officers from homicide and from sex crimes.

And at that time, we started to gather together  occurrences within the same geographic area.

Police are reminding all citizens,  particularly of Asian background,

that the suspect is still at large and  are being advised to take precautions.

The suspect is described as male, race unknown,  20 to 30 years old, brown or very tan complexion,

5'8, muscular medium build. And he spoke English.  He was wearing a plain white cotton, short sleeved

t-shirt, black shorts and running shoes. Sam: The community was on high alert

and probably living in terror. Gary: We dedicated a tremendously

large number of officers by way of a community  safety alert. There was alerts going out as a

result of the summer being so hot that despite  the fact that it's so warm that, that women in

the area should close their windows. And the fact  that there was there was an intruder, an active

intruder in the area that was targeting  women who were alone in their home.

It was six months after the early morning sexual  assault . the winter before the attack on the Wu

sisters when this woman s house was broken into. We have altered her voice and cannot identify her

because of what would happen next --  a second attack, in January 2000.

The mother-of-two fit the profile. Antony:

Can you take us back to that day, there  was an indication that that something

was not right, even before that, correct? Yes. Our house had got broken into in December

and it ...not much had been damaged.  It was just looked like a little bit

ruffled, but my laptop had been stolen. We had got contracted ADT, the alarm company

after that. They were actually supposed to come  that day in January to come and update my system.

It was a beautiful morning. And my two neighbors  are out like neighbors are out doing their garbage

and shoveling snow. So who would have thought. Typical day, drop my kids off at

their, dropped them off at school. Came  back. And drove my car into the garage,

was planning to go and shovel the snow, shovel  the driveway. So I just opened the house door and

turned off the alarm because I was going to drop  off my belongings. And then that's when he came up

from behind me and grabbed me around the neck. And I still had my car key in my hand, so I

pressed the key fob to set the alarm off and he  dragged me from the entrance down into the house,

and he told me to turn off the car alarm. And  then when I didn't, he he hit me in the face.

And then I started screaming. And he hit me  again, threatening me with a knife. He had a

knife with him. I don't remember the exact words,

but it's like, Do you want me  to cut your face to? Do, do you,

you know if this hurts, do you think,  you know, I can make it hurt more.

His face was completely covered. And  he was wearing like kind of a green

army, green jacket and heavy boots. And then was asking me for

money or like he was trying to rob me. So I gave  him my watch and then he wanted my bank card. So

I gave him my bank card. But then he wanted the  PIN number, so I gave him a false pin number.

Then he dragged me back down to the  basement, made me sit on the couch,

told me to take off my jacket and I said no. He repeatedly asked me to take my clothes off.

Yeah. at knifepoint, at knifepoint. Antony: What went through your mind at the time?

No way in hell. Yeah, robbery was part of  it, but sexual assault was part of it.

Antony: Yeah. And then it was at that point that my neighbor

came into the house through the same entrance  that I had gone into to turn off the alarm.

And he was like saying, Hello, hello. He didn't speak English very well. And so

I didn't really know him. But he's a very  brave man because there were two neighbors

out there. But he chose to come in. The other  one chose not to. They both saw and heard.

And I can't remember if I responded, but  the attacker said, Who's that? And I'm like,

I don't know. It's probably the alarm  company. They're supposed to be here. And then

I and then I don't know, I, I was I believe he he  knocked me out somehow, but my neighbor found me

basically unconscious in a pool of blood. And the attacker had got out of the house from

another entrance. So he he I believe he broke  in in December so he could get kind of an idea

cause our house is a little bit complicated,  getting in and out. So, so he got away.

COMING UP, POLICE FOLLOW THE EVIDENCE...

AND IDENTIFY A SUSPECT.

Police are investigating three violent attacks  -- all took place in the same neighbourhood,

all the victims were Asian women. The most recent attack cost 18-year-old

Tina Wu her life -- her younger sister  Theresa is lucky to be alive.

NOW BACK TO An Enigma: Hiding in plain sight A woman who lives next door to the Wu s reported

seeing a black van parked in her spot on  the night of the murder. Last Thursday,

that van was found. Jackie Stevens  and her boyfriend, Jim Giannoulias,

gave police the van description:  I'm really glad that they found

them. That makes me feel really good. Gary: In late August, three of our investigative

detectives were following up on some investigative  leads. We knew from the investigation at the

scene as a result of the canvass that  was done was that an older model, MPV,

dark minivan was seen parked in the parking lot  at 680 Shepherd, which is the apartment building

next door to the sisters. In that vehicle was  some large, bulky equipment that ends up being

carpet cleaning equipment. This individual  was seen at the gas station pumping gas.

We also knew from the occurrences that in one of  the offenses, the offender had stolen one of the

victim's ATM bank cards and he had attempted to  access the account and withdraw some money at a

nearby plaza called the Parkway Plaza Mall. We had surveillance images of this individual

as he tried to access money from the ATM  machine. We could see that this individual

was approximately 5 10, maybe one hundred and  ninety pounds. He had facial hair. He appeared

to be male, white. And he also appeared to  have long dread-like hair down to his waist.

That individual appeared to be the one that  was pumping gas, at the Petro-Canada station.

Uniform sergeant approached this individual and  got a driver's license with the identification

in the name of Stuart McKeller  Cameron, who lived on Havenbrook in

the Don Mills and Sheppard area of the city. We found out that an individual had attended

the Olivers jewelry store on Eglinton  Avenue. And we recovered that video

and found out that a Stuart Cameron had pawned  a female Rolex watch at that location.

Cameron was put under surveillance and as a  result of that, we found him in the company

of a female who was not his wife. The  surveillance team believed at the time

that there was a sexual act taking place in this  vehicle with this woman that was not his wife.

And the surveillance officers watched as Cameron  got out and he threw a tissue onto the ground,

which was ultimately recovered and sent to the  center of forensic sciences for examination.

Sam: And that tissue became  a linchpin in this case.

Gary: Absolutely. Once the DNA sample  was recovered, it took 18 hours for the

DNA results to come back. So once we found  out that Stuart Cameron was the offender,

he was put under 24 hour surveillance based on the  fact that the concern before he was apprehended

was that he would reoffend violently. Once the search warrants were prepared, we

had an arrest plan. His dangerousness is the fact  is that we had some concerns that his children

and his wife might be used as hostages or pawns in  relation to a barricaded armed suspect. He lived

in a residential apartment building. We didn't  we knew we had neighbors on either side and above

and below. So the concern was that we wanted to  apprehend him within the community. So we had some

control over his apprehension. And the  decision was that we were going to do it

while he was driving around in the vehicle that  we were going to execute the warrant on.

Forensic officers were removing items from  Stuart Cameron's Don Mills apartment building

as the 32 year old made his first  court appearance. The murder suspect

and accused serial rapist was formally most  notable for his waist length dreadlocks.

Very long hair. Once you noticed,  it's impossible to forget him.

But now Cameron is accused of the  stabbing death of 18 year old Tina Wu,

the attempted murder of her 14 year old sister  Theresa, and two sexual assaults -- one this

past January, the other in July of 1999.  All of the victims are Asian women.

Antony: Tell me about the news of the arrest.  When people got word of that happening.

Sam: It's pretty exhilarating when you hear  there's been an arrest in a horrific homicide

like this one. Because you want to see the  perpetrator brought to justice and you want

to allay the fears of a community. That there  is a serial violent predator in their midst.

Antony: What was that like for  you when you heard that news?

It was shocking, was shocking. Heartbreaking.  It's a shock... I think it was a shock to our

whole neighborhood to think that somebody lived  amongst us that was a killer. A murderer.

They may have come by the house for  trick or treating at one point.

Antony: You passed by that  building on regularly.

Oh yeah. It's the neighbourhood.  It s in the neighbourhood.

For the past two years, Cameron has lived  in this Havenbrook Boulevard high-rise with

his wife and three children. He runs his  own carpet cleaning business and has had

no prior dealings with the police. Building Superintendent Radu Stelea reacted

in disbelief when told of the arrest: Yeah. He's a  nice guy, family man. That s the word. Taking care

of his wife and the kids like crazy, believe me. Sam: Stuart Cameron was a cunning chameleon.

By day, he was Mr. Dad. He would drive  his kids to their appointments to school,

he'd do his carpet cleaning. He literally was  hiding in plain sight. No one had any idea

of the violence this man was capable of. Gary: I interviewed the offender

for several hours post arrest. For a number of hours, he remained silent

until I described a scenario to him where  in the morning that I was going to call the

parents of the Wu sisters on the other side  of the world and tell them that he had been

apprehended for what he did to their daughters.  And what did you want me to tell them?

And at that time, he associated himself to his  own children and the fact that he indicated that

life was never going to be the same for him  and that his relationship with his children

was never going to be the same. And and as a result of that,

he started to open up to me after many hours  of conversation and indicated to me that he

was responsible for all of the offenses that  we've been speaking about. He indicated that

he was responsible for the murder of Tina Wu,  the attack on her sister. He was responsible

for the attack on the other woman that lived in  the same area approximately like a year earlier.

He was responsible for the attack on the  woman who had her watch an ATM card stolen.

As a result of the research we did into his  background, he had no criminal history of any

kind. And the best explanation I ever got from  him was that at the time of his offenses, he was

smoking a tremendous amount of marijuana and he  had some, as he described it, crazy thoughts.

Stuart Cameron appeared ashen faced as  he pled guilty to second degree murder,

admitting to the brutal knife  attack of two teenage girls.

An official from Taipei spoke for the  family: Well, we would like to thank the

police department for their relentless effort in  solving the case so that justice can be served.

This morning, Cameron also pleaded guilty to  sexually assaulting a woman in July of 1999,

as well as the attempted sexual assault of  yet another woman just five months later.

Antony: You were involved in the  pretrial? Would that mean that you,

saw him at all in-person? I did. It was really hard.

It was, it triggered me. It made me feel so  nervous. It was just really difficult to see him.

It was hard to hold it all together. I don't  remember him ever, ever showing any remorse.

I can't remember him saying  anything during the trial.

I don't remember him at all showing any remorse. DANIEL BRODSKY: Mr Cameron has expressed

remorse. He's quite remorseful... Daniel: Yes, he was very, very sorry for them,

for what he had done because he was gonna to be  going to jail. He was going to lose his family. He

was going to lose the, the high regard that people  in the church and people in his community had for

him. In that way, he was very remorseful. Sam: I mean, a guilty plea is a sign of

remorse. He spared his victims the trauma of  reliving those horrible nights that they had.

And the justice system gives  people credit for that.

In court, 33 year old Stuart Cameron broke down  as you read a handwritten letter: I would like

to apologize... I failed as a human being...  I hope and pray society will forgive me.

The Wu family didn't fly back from Taiwan  to hear Stuart Cameron s sentencing hearing,

but they did provide their own written statements  as to how the murder of Tina and the attempted

murder of Theresa has impacted their lives. In her statement, Theresa Wu writes:

I always feel no sense of security, very  afraid that someone may be hiding in the

house, in the closet, thus there were  several nights I dare not go to sleep,

wanted to protect the family. Dozens of members of Toronto's Taiwanese

community filled the courtroom  in support of the Wu family.

He targeted at Asian women. And I'm one  of them. So this is one of my concerns.

COMING UP FOR YEARS, STUART CAMERON SAID HIS  VICTIMS WERE RANDOM BUT THAT STORY WILL CHANGE.

STUART CAMERON HAS PLEADED GUILTY to second degree  murder in the stabbing death of teenager Tina Wu,

and in the attempted murder of  her younger sister Theresa.

As well, he s admitted to  sexually assaulting a woman...

and the attempted sexual assault of another. NOW BACK TO THE CONCLUSION OF An Enigma:

Hiding in plain sight. Reporter: Today, a Toronto judge

sentenced Cameron, a 33 year  old father of three, to prison

for life with no chance of parole for 20 years. Reporter: The Crown had asked the dangerous

offender status be applied to Stuart  Cameron, but that request was taken

off the table with Cameron's guilty plea. Daniel: Justice Watt was the trial judge in

our case and he used the phrase it was, he's  an enigma. The two sides of the coin were as

different as I've ever seen in thirty years  of practice and over two hundred and some

odd murder cases that I have defended. Sam: While he presented one way in public,

he would literally go to bed with his  wife, get up in the middle of the night,

go to another home, sexually assault a woman  at night and then sneak back into the bed.

Stuart Cameron has gone through the process.  He was given a life sentence after he pleaded

guilty to murder, couldn't get full parole for  20 years, it s now been 20 years. He's now on

the unescorted temporary absence program  and visiting a healing lodge. At the time,

he never revealed that he had Indigenous roots.  But he's actually he's half Guyanese, his mother

s Guyanese, this guy is his father's Scottish. Daniel: My first thought was, Oh, I didn't know

that you could get into Indigenous programming  if you were Indigenous Guyanese. But um, but um,

well you live and learn. Gary: I think based on the fact that

he never self-identified at the beginning  of his incarceration or even during the

investigative phase prior to his  sentencing, that that it's just

him trying to manipulate the penitentiary system. Sam: We have learned that he acknowledged that

he was unhappy in his marriage, that he had  bottled up his hostility against Asian women.

Because of his hatred of his Filipino wife. And  that he used sex as a tool to assert control

and to arouse himself. Gary:

His epiphany that he is now, you know, identifying  to the parole board, that his victims were not

selected randomly, that they were targeted  comes as absolutely no surprise to me. And my

belief is that the parole board would want the  offender to embrace the fact that these women

were preselected or else there's no  meaningful reason for his release. But for

more than 90 percent of his penitentiary  sentence, he had the parole board believe

that these victims were selected randomly. Daniel: You expect a person to change

when they're, when they're being rehabilitated. So  what what I think the parole board of Canada will

want to know is not, you have a hate-on for for  women in the Asian community -- because that's,

everybody knows that that's the 'what' happened.  What they're going to want to know is the 'why'

do you have this animosity towards Asian women and what have you done about that issue over all these

years? If you can't get to why it happened? How  do you get to, Well, it won't happen again. ?

But what everybody wants to know is why  it happened? I don't have any idea.

I think.... In some ways, he did get a pass. That's kind of my fear I think is because he's

so good at playing the system, like manipulating,  like getting into the the minimum security,

uh, native healing lodge and  things like that. It's like...

He thinks about things and how to get around them,  so it worries me. It worries me and it also...

well, there's concern about like, OK, so  are you really, like, healed? Like you

really don't feel like killing Asian women  anymore, attacking Asian women anymore?

There was a lot of time spent on repairing  myself, my face physically. So there was a lot

that took about two years to finish  all the surgery that needed to be done.

Whatever he did in the last hit knocked me out  and made my face so swollen that basically my

cheeks were the same level as the bridge of  my nose. So and I couldn't recognize myself.

Today she finds solace in working as a  part-time emotional wellness coach.

I think I had been kind of looking for some  way to help, but mostly I was looking for

some way to help myself. And she found a way to say

thank you to the neighbour who saved her life. Antony: Have you spoken to the neighbor since?

He passed away in 2014. Antony: Did he have a sense of

what he did in terms of. saving your life? Oh, yeah. He's like he's really proud of it. So

someone asked me to nominate him as the, what is  it called.. like police hero, like like as a hero.

And so he did and he got an award and he  was very proud of that. He's like my hero.

Antony: When you describe the past twenty  years and you know, you've raised a family.

How is that for you? Is it a  daily struggle for you still?

I, I don't think so, but my family might beg to  differ. I think I am a very protective parent.

That has really been the difficult impact that  this has left on me, as trying to balance wanting

my children to go out and be in the world  and flourish and yet worrying that if they're

in that world, that they might get hurt. Antony: When did you talk to your children about

it? When did they get a sense of what was going? Oh, by accident, they found a letter that I had

written to the police board to nominate my  neighbor as a hero. And so they came and

questioned me about it. And that's when I told  them. Yeah, but I don't think they've heard all

the details, this will be the first. Jeff:

I would like to express my appreciation to  Detective Gary Giroux even though Gary already

retired, he still keeps eyes on this case. Gary: I've communicated with the family through

the same individual that I've always communicated  through, which was Jeff Chang family friend.

The promise was to try to communicate to the  parole board that this is an extremely dangerous

individual and to take extreme caution with  regard to any considerations for release. And the

fact that I'm still here even as a, as a retired  officer and to try and fulfill the promise that I

made to them over 20 years ago. Gary:

I think about the girls. I think  about what Tina would have gone on to

contribute to her own her own community. I think  about the promise that I made to this family

and that I felt that it was important, that  it wasn't just a veiled promise that I made

at the time of conviction. It was something  that I meant and it was something that I

plan to carry out. Theresa has gone on to

be extremely successful. She has a masters  degree. She has a Ph.D. She's gone on to be a mom

and she continues to live her life in Taiwan. Jeff: She's doing pretty good. She has her

own family now with three lovely boys and,  uh, and she works for the family business.

It cost the family until now. They still,  they still have to . this shadow I think they

would never go away the rest of their life.  What a lovely family. How could everybody,

anybody done to to them... they're not supposed  to deserve it...it s not going to walk away,

this shadow. Never walk away, I believe. Antony: Do you find yourself now,

do you go back to those moments? Is it  healing for you to to to talk about it?

Surprisingly, I'm pretty calm with  you right now. I thought I would be,

I would have a difficult time maintaining my  composure. I've spoken about it, I've had therapy

and it's helped a lot massively.  I do go back once in a while, but

I don't go into the details and I don't really see  his face. So I think maybe, you know, a few years

ago I wouldn't be able to talk about it. We can't be afraid of the world. We have

to go out into the world. And so we just  have to be present in this world and not

be worried that someone's going to be harming us. That's why I'm here.
