I'm competing here in Morocco,
against the best in the field,

and the Dakar favourites.

I'd never have bet one euro
that I'd be here one day,

but I can't control the outcome.

I'm out of my comfort zone.

It was danger three
in all of this zone.

I remember when I was 13 years old,

I'd already been
the Spanish champion many times.

I came 3rd in the Karting
World Championship.

I started to work as a mechanic
on my free weekends.

A boy from Galicia
arrived in Asturias,

he needed a mechanic.

He came to do a race
in the Asturias championship

and my dad said
I should be his mechanic.

I was 13 years old
and just strong enough

to tighten the wheels
and all the rest...

But I volunteered to do it

and I was Alberto's mechanic
for that race.

I realise not many people can claim

they had Fernando as a mechanic.

We got on well together,

though we were both children,

and from that day until now
we've been a team.

We're really tight.

The feeling is mutual.

A detail: in my phone contacts,
I have him listed as "Brother".

I was so excited for the first race.

The tests had gone really well.

I started the race and tried
to pass everyone in the first laps.

By hour 4 or 5, we had no brakes
and spent 3 hours in the garage.

One thing that's new
in this field are the liaisons.

One complete stage of the Dakar

means there's a "liaison",

the transfer from the bivouac
to the SS start point.

Each day it's different,

but it can be between
5 or 10 kilometres,

and in this Dakar we even did 350 km

from the bivouac, from the camp,

to the Special Stage starting point.

So that's a short journey
added to each stage,

one you weren't expecting,

and those extra kilometres
represent more hours in the car.
