to see if this 3-year-old kid
would find the fun in it.

And I did!

The thing is, I've never liked cars!

this is his third year of competing.

Last year, he came sixth.

And this year,
he's currently third, with 91 points.

I don't remember anything
until the age of around 8 or 9.

I don't remember the races
or where we raced in Asturias.

We all thought it was a game.
A little something extra.

The aim was to have fun
and to enjoy yourself.

In the children's category
they're emulating the adults,

showing great courage,
cunning, and driving skill.

It was crazy!

Was it dangerous? Very.

When I watch
those old race videos now,

I ask my mother,
"How'd you let him do it?"

There were these urban races,
marked out with bales of hay.

They were about 600-700 metres long,

they passed by houses
and would take 1-2 minutes.

It's unthinkable today.

it was a big lifestyle change.

knocking on our front door.

I think he was calm,
but I felt overwhelmed.

Just a few people came by at first,

but in the end, it was crazy.

It ended up being a huge crowd.
You don't know how you'll cope.

It was absolute madness.

It affected his personal life.

I always tried to remain
the same old Fernando.

The only way to do that was
to keep friends and family close

and to view the world of Formula 1

as something unreal and temporary.

Sometimes it's easy, sometimes not.
It can go to your head at times.

including people who loved cars

Travelling around Spain
became complicated.

But it was very bad
for his personal life.

and being organised.

I always liked maths as a kid.

I've always had a certain order
and discipline in my daily life.

then study from 4.50 till 5.30.

Then I'd sleep.

It's not normal.

The way he's able to find

20 minutes of maximum concentration,

to be on top form,
and to perform well, and he did.

When you talk to him,
his mental capacity is so strong.

He's talking to you,
but his brain is thinking ahead.

This is a job where you need
a level of concentration

that very few people can achieve.

Whatever activity I take part in,

I have this compulsion
to find the competition in it.

I've always been extreme.

When I'm having fun with friends,

at some point I'll come out
and say, "How about the first to 5?"

They look at me as if to say,
"Why are you ruining things?

"We're having a good time
and you want a competition."

He always gives his best,

even when he's doing
something quite mundane.

He competes at everything.

How's it going?

Every day, when we lived in
an apartment without an elevator,

the competition
was to get downstairs first.

We'd run downstairs,
elbowing each other.

At one point,
I'd always win, of course.

I'm 5 years older
and had the advantage.

A life without competition
didn't exist for me,

as well as a life
without being competitive.

If I don't play golf well,
I'll never play with anyone again.

It's an extreme way of living.

24 HOURS OF DAYTONA - 2019

In 2019, I had a goal
clearly fixated in my mind.

I'd be taking part in Daytona
for the second time.

And one day, I wanted to add
this victory to my accomplishments.

Life offers you challenges.

For racecar drivers,
an endurance race is one of them.

In Alonso's case,

he's met one of these challenges,
the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Will he be winning Daytona?

We'll see, over the next 24 hours,

whether he can take
this victory or not.

The race started dry,

but we were all watching
the weather forecast.

For the past few days,
the forecast clearly called for rain.

And in the middle of the night,
we had torrential rainfall.

And I think the race got interesting

due to the difficulty
in keeping the car on the track,

the low visibility...

It was very emotive.

The drivers are suffering now.

In these conditions,
they can't really see.

The first relays were good.

We switched when we were ahead
and we were being competitive.

And when the rain started,
I was halfway through my relay.

It was my turn to be behind the wheel

when the conditions changed.

My experience of knowing
where the puddles were

we used the other Cadillac.

We pushed on without stopping,
both of us taking lots of risks,

until a small mistake was made
and we took the lead and the win.

I was an old hand, but it was
his first time in a rally car.

And with regards to Carlos,
he's always been there to help him.

I did the same race here in 2016.

I had a broken rib from Australia.

I came to see if I could race or not.

I did the medical,
and they wouldn't let me race.

They were racing with my car
and I really wanted to race.

But today...

It's good.

I was training in Barcelona
at the start of the year.

And I know why I'm here,
to help out the team.

But I don't miss
being behind the wheel.

That was the first race I went to,
after you did the test.

It's the first time I've come
after the end of the season.

I have a deep respect
for everything he does.

I'm very keen on motor sports,

Model: Toyota TS050 Hybrid
Engine: Twin Turbo V6

Power: 1000 cv Traction: 4 x 4

This is the Toyota WEC car.

It really is a spectacular car.

As you can see,
it looks like a spaceship.

And driving this car
is also a lot of fun.

It's got 1000 horsepower,
the acceleration is brutal...

We've got 4-wheel drive,
which is unusual for a race car.

We'd usually have rear-wheel drive.

One basic difference
is your line of sight.

In F1, we don't have this windscreen

sitting in front of us.

We have the halo,
but your vision is different.

Especially with this pillar here.

In the left-hand turns,
this takes away from our vision.

On the slow curves,
we also look out here

more than straight ahead.

All the systems are similar to F1,

with the hybrid systems and whatnot.

You just have to adapt to it.
And the driver switches too.

We've got 30 seconds
to take off our belts, get out,

belt up our partner, and go.

And the steering wheel is fixed.

In F1, we can remove
the steering wheel.

And it's easy to get out the car.

But with the fixed wheel,

you end up hurting your legs
when you're practising.

Sebring is a legendary
endurance racetrack.

The circuit's famous bumps

make it one of the championship's
most demanding races.

And this racetrack
is proud of its bumps.

Its design
hasn't been changed for decades.

The weekend started well,
we had pole position.

And on our quickest lap,

we broke Sebring's
historical track record.

So we were doubly happy.

The next day's victory
was also an essential step

with regards to our aspirations
to win the world championship.

In Sebring, I had finished
an interesting endurance race.

The previous year,
I had won the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This year,
I won the 24 Hours of Daytona

and the 1,000 Miles of Sebring.

Winning Le Mans,
Daytona, and Sebring

more-or-less on my first go

went beyond any dreams
and goals I had in mind

for the world of endurance racing.

with a 15-point lead
over the second position

In Formula 1,
your teammate is your rival.

You keep many secrets from him.

In Endurance Championships,
it's the opposite.

You and two others
take turns driving the car

and you share everything.

You need a good relationship.

I never had friends in racing,
except during Endurance races.

This shows what
you go through together.

In the WEC, the advantage,
or the difference, to Formula 1

is the communication
and integration with the whole team,

especially with your 2 co-drivers.

We share every tiny secret
that we find in the circuit.

On one of the bends,
there's more grip on the edge.

So I shared this with my teammates,

so that they can
take the bend well too.

Little things like that

that you'd usually keep to yourself,

you share them with your teammates.

It's always easier to have
a little bit less power...

And you have 3 GT's in front...
you're timing the good passes there.

When you have all the power,
you don't know how to avoid them.

Because the difference of speed
is huge.

Yeah, it's true.

Everything becomes calmer.

With the constant traffic,

it makes the driving much more fun.

You're coming out of a corner,
you see two cars, and you think,

"How do I get ahead?
Is this driver a pro or not?

Can I slow down the slipstream?"

So mentally, corner after corner,

you're busy, and the time flies by.

Some drivers are good
at traffic management, others aren't.

There may be three-tenths
between the fastest and slowest cars.

But in traffic,
you lose one second quickly.

If he wins in Spa, Fernando will be
one race from becoming WC again

All that remains
is the 24 Hours of Le Mans

If Spa goes well,
Le Mans may go well.

Spa is an important race.

There's a lot of debris in turn 17.

I think it's a safety car situation.

Fernando, for info:
car seven is in the box now.

They have a problem.

When your rival has a problem,
you have a 1-2 lap advantage.

Everything totally changes.

Sometimes it's harder
to drive at 60% and be conservative

than it is to give it 100%
and feel your rival's pressure.

This "moment of respite", let's say,

can make you feel more tense

because you're scared
of making a mistake.

I've never driven
in those conditions before.

If you're doing a test
and these weather conditions appear,

you usually stop the test

because it's too risky
to drive in rain like that.

At one point, I saw ice
building up on the window,

under the windscreen wipers.

I had only seen this
happen in planes.

If you make a mistake,
then the race is over.

If you go on the grass in this rain,

the car won't stop
until you hit the guardrail.

Mentally, that was the most
demanding race I've ever done.

With his victory in Spa,
Fernando is one race from becoming WC

All that remains
is the 24 Hours of Le Mans

This year is a real achievement.

This year, he's doing what
few sportsmen have accomplished.

He's been able to choose where,
how, with whom, and when.

He'll do it at his own pace,
according to his rules.

Why does he do it?

Because he's competitive
and loves motor sports.

He likes trying new disciplines
and doing what's never been done.

Fernando is a driver
who has the ability

to adapt to other disciplines

within the world of motor sports,

due to his "madness", let's say,

and because he just loves to drive.

I hope he succeeds
and goes down in history

for achieving this Triple Crown,
as well as the Dakar.

That would be very, very special.
