The squad is finally together.

It's time for us to chase
the fear that we ran from.

We are going to a massive
haunted sanatorium

deep into the woods
of Minnesota,

and we're doing this
in the dead of winter.

Thousands of people died here.

LOWAQ: The building is alive.
[ Clattering ]

- Aah!
- It always has been.

- [ Gasps ]

I'm coming to you!

JOHNSON: I heard growling
that I could not dismiss as

anything of this world.

- Dude!
- What was that?

- I just heard a scream.
- People that do come in here,

they're gonna experience things
that they probably

won't want to experience.

[ Chelsea screaming ]

DAKOTA:
My name is Dakota Laden.

I am a documentary filmmaker.

For the past few years,
I've been investigating

the paranormal with Zak Bagans
and the "Ghost Adventures" crew.

Dakota Laden.
Welcome, buddy.

DAKOTA: I grew up in a house
where paranormal activity

terrorized my entire family.

It has gripped my sister,

my childhood best friend,

and me ever since.

So, I had an idea --

a psychological experiment...
Aah!

...where I would test how terror
affects the human mind,

what it reveals about
our true selves,

and just how much of it
a person can withstand.

To understand the paranormal,

first we need to overcome
our fear.

I'm leading us on a road trip
to explore

the most haunted abandoned
locations in all of America.

Each night, we'll separate
and sleep alone.

The catch is, I'm the only one
who knows where we're going.

This is it.
This is where it all started.

This is the place that set me

on a path
to explore the paranormal.

These are the haunted woods
that surround

my childhood home in Minnesota.

This is where I began
at a very early age

to try and understand
the unexplained events

that haunted me
and my sister growing up.

Enough time has passed,
and I just can't help shake

the thought that we need
to get back on the road

and do this again.

I don't think we're ever
not going to be scared,

but I really want this time
around to try to chase the fear

and conquer the fear and not let
these places get the best of us.

This road trip is going to be
a little bit different.

I want to up the stakes.

Not only have I selected places
that are bigger,

more violent and more
paranormally active

than the last road trip,

but all of these locations will
have a very personal connection

to each and every one of us.

And I've decided to shift
the control a little bit.

Tanner and Chelsea
are each going to be

picking their own location
this time.

So I will be riding blind
for part of the trip.

There's no better place
to start a new road trip

than a location that I've had
nightmares about ever

since I was a little kid.

It's right in our backyard.

This is a location
that myself, Chelsea and Tanner

have been dying to explore
our whole lives.

Growing up, this was the first
scary place we ever knew about.

For this first stop,

we are going
to a massive haunted,

abandoned sanatorium

deep into the woods
of Minnesota.

Opened in 1912,

the facility was the first
of its kind

to treat people
with tuberculosis.

1,500 people passed away

during its 90 years
of operation.

Several years ago, Alex,
Tanner and I,

we actually went
to this location.

We went there with the intention
of exploring the inside.

But unfortunately,
we didn't have enough courage

to go inside of the sanatorium.

Once Tanner and Alex find out
that we're going there,

they're going to freak out
because we all know

what's in store.

I want to make sure
that this time around

the fear does not win.

I'm ready to chase the fear
and conquer the fear head on.

Right now, I'm going to go
meet up with Tanner and Alex.

This is my house right here,

and that's where Alex lives,
is right there.

That's how close we live.

So right now, we are on our way

to go pick up Chelsea
at the airport.

And then the adventure begins.

Yeah, picking up Chelsea.

Haven't seen her in forever.

I know.

TANNER: There she is.

Yeah!
- Chelsea!

We got Chels.
The squad is finally together!

We are back.

[ Tires crunching in snow ]

[ Exhales sharply ]

Yes! It feels so good
to be home.

Ah! Alright, let's go have
a bonfire in the backyard.

[ Logs clatter ]

Keep the warmth going.
It's freezing.

Are you guys feeling ready to take
on this next road trip? I'm ready.

I'm excited as hell to be
with you guys again

and do this again.

But we're doing this
in the dead of winter.

It's freezing cold,

so now we're battling
the elements, too.

Last time it was
more of a mental

and spiritual challenge.

This time, it's mental,
spiritual and physical.

And you let us pick a location.

I know. I did.
That's one thing, too.

That was a mistake.

me now not knowing anything,

like that scares me so much.

Alex, do you feel like
you had enough time

since the last road trip

and fully prepare for this one?

I can not believe
we actually followed through

with that road trip. I can't believe
we were about to do it again.

to somewhere only I know.

This is a place where

undocumented deaths as well.

in Minnesota.

Dude, we finally guessed one!

I can't keep a damn secret.

We've been to Nopeming once
before. We never went inside.

We got way too scared
to go inside, but we filmed it.

TANNER: I just remember,
like, the building

is so intimidating-looking.

The fact that
we're gonna be doing this

in the wintertime, too,
is going to be even creepier.

So, you're bringing me
to a place

that you wouldn't even walk
into in the daytime? Yeah.

I know the cat's out of the bag.
The secret's out.

You guys know where we're going,

but coming to present
you guys with the packet.

I've done a bunch of research.

We've only really heard hearsay
growing up about this place.

I'm excited
to get the full story.

Yeah, me too.

But I will say I know that we
grew up researching this place

and you guys might think
you know a lot about this place,

but it's a lot worse
than we thought.

[ Sighs ]

Chelsea, do you want to open it up?
Sure.

Alright. Does not matter to me.
I already know what it says.

Here we go.

Nopeming Sanatorium.

♪♪

On the outskirts
of Duluth, Minnesota,

along the back side
of Spirit Mountain

lies the truly frightening
Nopeming Sanatorium,

considered to be the most
paranormally active location

in all of Minnesota.

Nopeming opened in 1912
for the purpose

of servicing patients
that had tuberculosis.

Built on Native American
Ojibwe tribal land,

the name Nopeming means
"out in the woods."

It was deliberately secluded
from the nearby city

and isolated away
from prying eyes.

TB is a debilitating
respiratory disease

which gives patients a
tremendous pain in their lungs.

They spit up blood and struggle
just to -- just to breathe.

TANNER:
Treatment for TB was risky,

dangerous and often fatal.

More severe options
included chest surgeries

that partially collapsed
the lung or even lung removal.

That's insane.

Nopeming Sanatorium
was overflowing with patients

at the time
because there were so many.

There were no beds available
in the building,

so they had tents set up
outside to house patients.

- Are you kidding?
- Geez. I didn't even know that.

Tents?

Yeah.
People had to sleep in tents.

Okay, but outside in tents
in Minnesota?

- Yeah.
- That's just wrong.

There's eight months
out of the year

where you're freezing cold.

JOHNSON:
During the early years,

tuberculosis being what it was,

this was a final stopping place

for most people
that went through those doors.

GREYSMARK:
Thousands of people died here.

It's very hard to put
a specific number on how many.

Nopeming is alive.
It is.

It always has been.

I used to make deliveries here.

I delivered
medical supplies weekly.

Coming up the drive,
I was at the gate,

I felt flushed, lightheaded,
and my heart was pounding.

It was just racing.

It's like something
or somebody is looking at me.

A woman that worked here,

she told me that
she would see a nurse

in was like
an a 1930s nurse uniform.

She said she would walk by
and she'd smile,

and then she'd go around
the corner and disappear.

During the height
of the TB epidemic,

patients whose bodies were
unclaimed by family or friends

would be disposed of
in the crematorium.

Transported there
through underground tunnels

in the winter months,

it's said that in some cases,
patients who were presumed dead

were burned alive.

The crematorium was down
where the furnaces are.

Here was a hallway.

They had to basically
run from the bodies

down through there.

People have told me
that they could hear voices.

They would be attacked
or scratched.

I heard growling
that I could not dismiss

as anything of this world.

It bounced off of the walls.
It surrounded me.

I just got the sensation
that I needed to get out.

But it wasn't just
the disease and its treatment

that caused people to lose
their lives at the facility.

Numerous desperate patients

would jump to their deaths
on the fourth floor.

[ Screaming ]

There is a part of Nopeming
that is referred to

as the suicide balconies.

You had tuberculosis,
you had some mental illness,

you had some older people
that were here.

But with a death sentence
on your head,

if they had a chance to take
their own lives, they'd do so.

JOHNSON: And ultimately,
the balconies had to be fixed

with 10-foot-high bars simply to
prevent the attempts of suicide.

What else could this place have?

Like, I'm serious.

TANNER: The basement is home
to the sinister spirit

of a former maintenance man.

He has been seen
wearing brown coveralls

and hates when people mess
with his tools.

He'll attack those who dare
to be disrespectful.

I personally got the sense
that this maintenance worker

doesn't want people in his area.

LOWAQ: One day I got
a little bit too curious

and I proceeded
to open some doors.

That's when I got a tug
in the back of my head.

Pulled me back, and, uh,

I think what they're telling me

was just to
mind my own business.

Nopeming made headlines
in May 1940

with the Mother's Day massacre.

- Wait, what?
- What?

Orderly Alex Sufruk
was shot five times

by patient John Wintoniak

200 feet from
where several thousand people

were celebrating
with their families.

That had a lot more scary stuff
than I was anticipating.

- Mm-hmm.
- Yeah, I mean,

this is gonna be a fricking challenge.
We're gonna be cold.

We're going to be separate
farther than we've ever been.

Tomorrow is going to be
a very long night for us.

ALEX: You think we check in
with Dakota and Chelsea?

TANNER: I don't think
that's a bad idea.

[ Clattering ]

[ Chelsea screams ]

Today's the big day --
we will be spending the night

at Nopeming Sanatorium.

I still can't believe we have
the opportunity to do this.

It's so crazy.

CHELSEA:
So where are we going now?

So right now we are on our way
to go meet with a couple,

Amanda and Brent.

They are local filmmakers
actually in the area

who filmed a movie
at the sanatorium,

and they were in there
for several days

with a small film crew.

And while they were filming
there, they had experiences.

- Alright. Hey, hey.
- Nice to finally meet you guys.

- Nice to finally meet you, too.
- Tanner.

- This is the squad.
- Yeah!

- You guys are filmmakers.
- We are.

- So we --
- Just like us.

Yeah, we have a lot in common.

We're going to
the Nopeming Sanatorium.

We're going there tonight.
- Yep.

And I know that you guys
have had some experiences there.

- Absolutely.
- Yeah.

It is one of
the creepiest places

I've ever been in
in my entire life.

So what's it like
when you first see the building?

It's massive,
and it's incredibly ominous.

It's so easy to get
turned around in there,

you need to be careful.
The floors all look the same,

so you really got
to pay attention.

DAKOTA: You guys had experiences
while filming

a horror movie there.
- Yep.

DAKOTA: So you weren't even,
like, looking for it

really necessarily.

It just happened.
- Yeah.

If you could, give us
a couple of rooms

that you would say or areas

that are the most active.
- The, like, mechanic's basement.

- We heard stuff getting thrown.
- We heard moans,

we got EVPs,

we got metal objects thrown
across the room.

Is that -- Is that
the basement where there's

said to be like an old maintenance
man who... AMANDA: Yes.

Doesn't like people
touching his tools.

- No, he was very angry.
- Yeah?

Very angry. Yeah, one of our
members of our team is a psychic.

When she was in there,
she was attacked by him

and we had
to get her out of there.

It was really intense.

The third floor hallway.

I physically saw a hand
come around the corner

and move back
into the nurse's station.

And it stopped me cold.

- Oh...
- Man.

And it wasn't -- It was solid.

It wasn't, like, transparent,
misty ghost.

No, it was --
something was there.

I honestly cannot believe

that you guys are gonna
spend the night there.

Yeah. I was thinking the same thing.
It is the worst environment imaginable.

- [ Sighs ]
- You know,

you've got
broken glass everywhere,

rotting ceilings, walls.

And it's --
it's a trek to get in.

It's covered in snow everywhere.
Feet of snow.

Will we even be able
to get our RV to the location?

You're probably going to need
a snowmobile or something,

because realistically,
getting an RV in there

is not going
to happen right now.

- Good to know.
- That means straight from here,

we're gonna
have to go get a rental car.

- Four-wheel drive. For sure.
- Four-wheel drive?

- Absolutely.
- Four-wheel drive SUV.

the most notoriously
haunted place in Minnesota.

of our second road trip!

- Yeah.

Now it's starting to kick in.
It's getting real.

- Wait a minute. What?
- I'm nervous.

This is so creepy.

So we've just got
to the sanatorium.

We set up all of our gear
inside of this room,

which is the chapel
on the third floor.

We're about to start
our very first

overnight of this road trip.

So I'm thinking because
this place is so damn big

that we start off in duos

and pretty much
for the majority of the night,

we tackle this place in twos.

Me and Chelsea will go up
to the fourth floor

where the nurse's station is,

and then, Tanner and Alex,

you guys go down
to the basement,

and then from there
we'll see what we do.

TANNER:
Dude, what the hell?

The walls are, like, frozen. CHELSEA:
It's glistening with this light on.

That's wild!
ALEX: Holy crap.

I never thought
it would look like this.

I'm just gonna walk this way
until I see stairs that go down.

Yeah, I don't know
where we're even going.

So this is where
the murder-suicide happened?

DAKOTA:
Yep. The third floor.

For people
that don't know what that is,

the Mother's Day massacre was
when an orderly was shot

by a patient
and then the patient

turned the gun on himself.
- On Mother's Day.

ALEX: Where are we going?
I don't even know where anything is.

this is where we depart.

I can catch the maintenance man

massive abandoned sanatorium.

This entire road trip,

this is all about
chasing the fear,

trying to conquer the fear.

And what better way than
to separate, and sleep alone?

We've all agreed on
the four scariest locations.

We have the fourth floor.

This is where many patients died
by suicide

from jumping off the balcony

At different times in the night,

both of us -- Tanner and Alex,
and me in Chelsea --

we thought we were interacting
with a girl named Carol.

What? "Carol."

Carol, is there something that
Tanner and I need to know?

It just said "killed."

We have the third floor hallway,
where it's alleged

that the Mother's Day massacre
took place,

where a patient shot an orderly,
and then put the gun on himself.

Then, we have
the East Wing basement,

with the spirit of a former
maintenance man is said to haunt.

When me and Chelsea
were down there,

we heard the loudest noise
I've heard in a very long time.

And it turned out that
it was something that fell

right in front of the doorway
that leads to the staircase.

And then, the caution tape
that was taped to the doorknob

and the banister
was cut in half.

And then, for our fourth
and final location,

we have the crematorium, all the
way across in its own building.

This is where they would burn
the bodies of the dead.

They say that some people
were pronounced dead,

but weren't actually dead,
and were burned alive.

Those are four
sleeping arrangements.

Tanner's gonna write those out
on a piece of paper,

and we're gonna
draw out of a hat.

And that's where you go sleep
for the rest of the night.

because I would not

I feel like this place
far exceeded my expectations

in terms of how scary it was.

That was a hell of a night.

The activity in this building
was unbelievable.

From the moment we got in,

it felt like there is
a thousand eyes watching us

and following us
around at every turn.

TANNER: We were
in such freezing temperatures

that it was hard to tell
what was really going on.

I mean, our bodies were shaking
and we didn't know

if that's something
in the spiritual realm

or if that is just
the weather outside.

CHELSEA: This place is filled
with paranormal,

with unknown.

Once we started peeling
the layers away at this building

and what it really encompassed,

it was terrifying.

DAKOTA:
People came here for healing,

and little did they know

they came here to die.

And I feel like a lot of people

might not even have realized
they passed away,

and that's why there's
so much energy on the property.

That's just one of many.

CHELSEA: That was
a really hard first one.

Nopeming is definitely the place

that we've always
feared growing up.

And we finally got
to tackle this place,

and we came out of it.

with a new kind of goal,

was to chase the fear.
