In the heart of
the French countryside,

a magnificent chateau stood
uncared for and abandoned.

Then five years ago,
everything changed...

Oh, wow. Look at that.

..when an intrepid British couple...

Turn. Turn, turn, turn.

Wow.

..unlocked its front door...

Everything's gorgeous.

..fell in love with it's grandeur...

..and embarked on an adventure.

Oh, my God!

Now, over three unique episodes...

..engineer Dick Strawbridge...

..and his wife, designer Angel...

..look back at how
their dream became a reality.

We never went into this project
thinking it was going to be

an easy project.
It was a massive, massive job.

In this special, we discover
how Angel's unique designs have

transformed the chateau...

I'm taking, like, everything
that I think is eye candy

and bringing it back to life.

..with her extraordinary
imagination...

I'd pay £20 for that in the UK.

..creativity and style...

This is beyond better than
I imagined.

..turning a cold, empty castle.

..into a home filled
with warmth and colour.

You don't do patience
and you don't do compromise. No.

But apart from that she's perfect.

Over the past five years,
Dick and Angel

have worked hard to bring
their 45-room chateau back to life.

Both dedicating their lives
to creating an extraordinary

home for their family.

Everybody raise your glasses,
please. Families.

ALL: Families. Cheers.

But now, we journey back to how
Angel made her mark on the chateau.

With her artistic flare
and unique eye for design...

..Angel has imprinted her creative
touch on everything she does.

I'm bloody minded. Yes, she is.

And I know that is
part of what makes me me.

With a history in design and events,

Angel finally had the
opportunity to visualise her dream.

I've been in events for a long time

and every single party you do,
there is an element of designing.

I've just got a bigger canvas
to work on now.

So with Angel's ambitious creative
plans, dozens of rooms to

transform and a limited budget,

they needed to come up with a plan.

When you've got a whole chateau
to fix, you got to start somewhere,

and the honeymoon suite
was your idea first, wasn't it?

With one suite, you can essentially
start a wedding business.

Angel's plan was to create an

idyllic setting for high-end
weddings.

And though the chateau's fairy-tale
exterior fitted the bill,

the interior was rather
a different story.

This room is our honeymoon suite.

When we moved in,
gosh, it looked so different.

I remember.

Along the corridor, you always find

beautiful ladies
here till about two.

Dick's video diary of October 2014

records the moment
they first inspected the bedroom.

This is the south-east
corner on the first floor.

In the corner is the tower room.

The tower room has got a window

overlooking the walled garden
direction.

We've got a sink.

That's the arrow slit.

We've got a bidet.

In this room as well, in the corner,

another fireplace.

What would one day become
the honeymoon site's sumptuous

sitting room was, back then,
a rather more spartan affair.

Angel saw the bare
room as a blank canvas,

but knew it had potential
for something very special.

In the spring of 2015, Dick
and Angel had just moved into the

chateau and were still working out
what each room should become.

This must be the architect, no?

All of this is the structure.

How cute, just the little crests.

The chateau's original plans not
only showed its design details

and layout... BOTH: Ooh!

..but also revealed
some of its history.

I'm just laughing at this because
it says, "Chambre de Madame".

And this is Chambre de Monsieur.

So you would live over there
and I would live over here.

Not happening.

Even though the Chambre de Monsieur
was the biggest bedroom

in the house, it still wasn't large
enough for Angel's grand vision.

A honeymoon suite could
be a bedroom and a bathroom

and just a little space - no.

Angela decided we had to have
a honeymoon suite which is

the big suite.

So, what would be amazing
is if you came in here

and this was your wedding salon
and there was an archway

or an opening here to the bedroom
and the bathroom over there.

The honeymoon suite
had to be a big space.

When the bride is getting married
sometimes there's 15-20 girls in,

plus a hairdresser
and photographer and make-up artist.

So I knew that there were
a couple of important things.

It needed to have a separate space
so the bride could get in

the right head-space, and it just
needed to have an airiness about it.

Angel's plan was to knock the Count
de Baglion's original bedroom

into the one next-door, creating
an adjoining bed and seating area.

His cabinet de toilette in the
turret would become a dressing room.

Unfortunately, the wall that Angel
wanted to knock through

supported one of the chateau's
six enormous chimneys.

That is one of the biggest
walls in the house.

OK. Pretty important, isn't it?

It's quite relevant, yeah.

But I think it...
I think it's necessary.

OK.

Right, erm...

We... We...

Don't go into this being grumpy.
No, no.

Go into it, it's looking like I've
saved you money. No, no, no...

This is the biggest
wall in the house,

and so Angela says,
"Can we have an archway?"

What a monumental pain in the arse.

I believe it... Still to this day,
totally necessary.

He hates it still. I mean...
There's a big hole in that wall.

The hole had to happen.

That was functionality.

So a lintel was put in,
and Angel put to work.

Mask on. Mask on, sorry. Ah!

Yay!

I think these are officially
one room.

Now she had the layout she wanted,

Angel turned her attention
to its design.

And seeking inspiration,

she and baby Dorothy ventured
up to the very top of the chateau.

1952!

When we first went
up into the attic,

I mean, it was pretty safe to say,
we were like kids in a sweet shop.

Ha-ha!

Ah! Something...

OK, there's something
living on that one.

It was very grubby. Yeah, I know.

It was very, very messy
but underneath all that mess,

there were some real treasures,
weren't there? Oh, absolutely.

One, two, three. Whoa!

The attic still today is
a place that we love to go up

and find new things.

The chateau had been owned
by the same family for 150 years

and like a lot of families,

they'd used their attic
as a dumping ground.

That is a very old musket.

It's one of their...

It's typical of
the French musketeers.

Your little short
bit at the end there.

All this bit is missing so it's not
viable, it's not a gun as such.

You must have dropped
the ball in there, tamped it down,

held it up here, put it on one of

those sticks with a
little V on it....

..and then got beaten by the English
when you're trying to reload.

I love it.

For Angel, a 215 square metre attic,

packed with decades of ephemera,
was a cornucopia of collectibles.

I get a thrill out of looking
through grubby old stuff.

And finding jewels. Yeah, the gems.
Yeah, finding those gems.

Now, this looks like wallpaper.

Among Angel's finds were dozens
of rolls of antique wallpaper,

some dating back
to the 19th century.

Now, that looks
like the paper downstairs.

Wow, there's millions of them.

Gosh.

Recognising some of the patterns
from around the chateau,

Angel's imagination
went into overdrive.

I would wear that.

This is the one that's in our
bedroom. I love this one.

I'm quite flabbergasted with
how it's kept in the attic.

The colours are so pristine.

A lot of these have been
hand-painted as well -

or hand-finished.

That's nice.

We do not know who in the Baglioni
family chose the wallpaper.

But they had good taste.
It's fantastic that we have it

and we can celebrate it.

And the way Angel celebrated it
was by showcasing all

the different patterns inside
the honeymoon suite's turret.

I like diamonds.

Something a bit more Alice
In Wonderland about it, isn't there?

Dick and I made the promise to one
another to bring this place

back to life and for me,
you know, I'm taking everything

that I think is eye candy
and bringing it back to life.

And together, I can feel
a bit of a pulse beating.

It needed to have something,
you know, with a heart.

The wallpaper's been an area
that has just taken on its own

personality because, yeah,
I put a harlequin pattern in it.

I chose a really elegant diamond
shape, and it looks lovely

and it's made a lot of people smile.

But choosing diamond patterns
were one thing, lining them

up on a curved
surface quite another.

It's all about getting them
lined up.

What I should have probably done
was ask Dick to do

the mathematical equations
and tell me,

but I'm far too stubborn for that,
I'd rather work it out the hard way.

The problem was quickly solved,
though, with a hint a haberdashery.

I'm loving this kind of braiding,
I think it looks great.

By the summer of 2015,
the honeymoon suite,

the first of the chateau's
guest rooms, was finished.

It's bright and light
and that's important.

You know, you need to have that
space when you're getting married.

There's a lot of thought
that goes into the utility

and the romance
of the honeymoon suite, because...

One of the things that
I love is the fact there's

an armchair in every bathroom,

with a bottle of
champagne beside it,

and that sort of detail
and that sort of element of it

I just think is quite special.

When I come in here
and I look at this, I think,

"Gosh, I cannot believe that
it is 100, 150 years old."

This room has made
a lot of brides smile,

and visitors and
family that come in,

they all kind of
want to see this room.

It just brings me so much joy.

Well done, you. Thanks, babes.

We're looking back at how,
over the past four years,

Angel's extraordinary
imagination has transformed

the inside of the chateau.

And one room where it's very
obvious, is in the grand entrance,

where the walls are adorned with
a whole kaleidoscope of butterflies.

You know, this entrance hall,
it makes me smile.

Angela starts with a picture in her
mind and the direction she's going.

She doesn't do compromise...

And the fact that the chateau has
got hundreds

of pinned out butterflies
is just because in her mind,

she saw hundreds of butterflies
taking off.

And in 2015, that's exactly
what she did.

It's going to be like a big
explosion of butterflies that

are going to go up the wall and the
ceiling and it's going to look nice.

If I've got an idea
I want to see it through

and I want to execute it
the best I can.

My one reservation is that actually,
even though I've done 200,

I don't know if I've got enough.

And every one takes about
five minutes.

I'm not going to do the maths,
but, you know, it's a lot of hours.

In fact, the display took Angel
over 24 hours to create,

but it's her dedication that's
transformed the chateau.

As well as a good sense of humour.

And who'd have thought we were
going to have two unicorns?

Me! I thought that.

And Angel's fun with faux animals

continued to the very
top of the stairs.

Yeah.

Oh, my God. Dick.

That is truly amazing.

But the faux wolf wasn't
just a bit of fun.

It was also a chance for Angel
to put a small part

of the chateau's history
in pride of place.

The last wolf in this part of France
apparently was shot out of the tower

over by our bedroom,
by the old count,

and it was stuffed and it sat up
there for years and years and years.

Yeah, yeah. We saw a
photograph of it

and Angela got one made, so we've
got like a replica of the wolf

that had been up there for
probably 100 years.

A nod. Yeah, a nod to the past.
Yeah.

It was soon clear that if
it made Angel smile,

it had a home in the chateau.

That is truly amazing.

It's a nice little touch, isn't it?
Just sort of...

A little touch? You are joking!

It's a bloody great wolf!

In the summer of 2016, work
on the Botanical Suite began.

The Botanical Suite, that was
the first suite that was done

when we had a little bit more
money come in

after the... Wedding.
The Honeymoon Suite, wasn't it?

Located on the top floor,
Angel decided that this guest suite

would have two bedrooms
and a bathroom.

I think the bath was the fun in that
one. Oh, the bath. Yeah. The bath.

With an eye on style,
as well as the budget,

Angel had bought for the
master bedroom

a second hand cast iron bath.

Listen to my idea, don't say no.

Right, I take this door off, OK?

The bath, I'm really sure,
fits in just here

and then they just sit, and look -
you've got the whole sky.

All she needed was for Dick to help
her move it into position.

I was looking at my strong,
handsome husband.

ANGEL LAUGHS

All 140 kilos of it.

Can you push it around that way?

So we don't bash the door?

Shoes in the bath...

Ah. This is just lovely.

You're pretty good about sort of
committing to something

and sticking with it for a bit.

But you have been known to change
if something better comes along.

Hmm.

It's not the statement bath that
I was expecting.

Mm-hm?

It's a bath in a cupboard.

OK.

I just remembered
I had one more option.

Having the bath in there
and the bed over there.

It's a really quick one to do.

Right. Yeah, so...

Angela starts with her description
of what's going to take place

with usually a bit of this...

And I don't quite know which wall
she's talking about
or what she means.

Usually starts with that but then it
gets more and more and more focused.

This is a really important decision.

Where are you putting that?

In the middle here?

In the middle of the ground? Yeah.

OK, there's going to be pipes
coming from it.

OK. OK. You don't think it's just
going to sit in the middle

and be sort of magically there
with pipes around it?

No, I don't think it's going to be
magically... But that's what you do.

You understand why I'm saying
that, don't you? Yep.

I am seasoned enough now to know...

Oh, you're so full of crap.

That's not true!

You just have this vision
in your mind and wave your arms.

The door's going to open to...
That's not nice. That's not nice.

Let's put this back.

If you're happy with
the look of that... Mm-hm.

Let me just have a couple of hours
to sort of mull it over.

DICK SIGHS

I think life is boring without
challenges though, isn't it?

I don't know.

THEY LAUGH

I don't know. The answer's
probably no.

While Dick worked out how to
plumb the bath...

There we go.

..Angel went about creating
the Botanical Suite's unique look.

My style probably has many decades
amalgamated together.

I love the personal style of the
'40s and the '50s.

And I love the '20s and the '30s.

For as long as I can remember,
I've like old things.

Love you. Move on.

ANGEL LAUGHS

In the Botanical Suite, Angel wanted
to give the Art Deco style

bathroom her own personal touch.

But she wasn't exactly sure how.

Luckily, Dick came to her rescue.

I wanted to do something
with the moat.

Divers going into waters.

Couldn't quite get it to work.

But Dick actually sat there
with his notebook and he said,

why don't we make the chateau
like in this shape, in a V-shape

and the divers going on either side.

I was like, you're a genius!

I've always liked doing
things bespoke,

and I think that's equally
my obsession with vintage.

It's something that's unique,
like Dick.

He's so unique. One of a kind.

To complete the Art Deco bathroom,
Angel wanted an Art Deco mirror.

But as she couldn't find
the one she wanted,

so she decided to try and make it.

Although the bathroom in the
Botanical is very Art Deco,

I think that mirror is quite
an oriental style.

And initially, we were
going to do it with bamboo

but it's nearly impossible to do.

And in the end, we used
these little batons.

So good, so far.

Just gave it a really good effect.

Darling, we're closing
the chateau down.

We're going into mirror production.

Love it.

By the autumn of 2016, the
Botanical Guest Suite was finished.

A wonderful bathroom.

This hasn't changed an iota.

There's certain things that have
just not needed it, which is lovely.

Considering that this is a couple of
years old now,

it's doing all right, I reckon.

Found that in the attic.

Love that.

Love that picture.

I'm really proud of this suite.

I'm proud of it because there's
hardly anything in here that's new.

The bed is from a charity shop.

This little fireplace
is from the attic.

I like seeing things just have
a purpose again.

I think my love of old things

and probably my historical
lack of money

has meant that I've always got
things in charity shops

and, you know, I've put things
together that all mismatch

but somehow they work together.

And I finished the Botanical Suite
off with treasures from the attic.

There's lovely views in all the
windows but when you get up higher

there's something quite majestic
about it because you're so high up.

Feel like you're in the clouds.

You can see France and that's what
you captured in the decoration,
wasn't it?

Yeah. I wanted some to have of that
beautiful botanics outside

and put it inside.

It felt so green and gorgeous that
I just wanted that room

to celebrate that,
and I like the word "botanical".

THEY LAUGH

and Angel's imagination, the chateau
slowly but surely came back to life.

We're now seeing how Angel's design
ideas helped create the perfect

place for both wedding guests and,
more importantly, her own family.

That sounds like a brilliant idea.
I love that.

Oh, what's floating over there?
Oh, it's a snake. Look at the snake!

Look, look, look. Oh, it's a snake.
See it swimming across the water?

Oh, yeah, there is one!

But just four years ago,

Angel was still finding it hard to
adapt to life in the countryside.

I am a city girl and, erm...and it's
very, very, very dark here

and I am genuinely scared
of the dark.

I mean, the first year, you was
away a hell of a lot, yeah.

This is not me being,
"Oh, you was away."

We'd planned it, you had to be away

to put money in the pot
to pay for things.

But walking around with your torch,
it was a little bit scary.

I remember getting a phone call

because there was a bat
in the house.

But the bat wasn't
just in the house,

it was in Angel's bedroom and,
as Dick was away, she got proof.

We've moved in five days and we're
all sharing a room.

Well, me, the kids.
Dick's in America.

And I just came
in to the shadow of a bat.

ANGEL LAUGHS

I had to call Dad.
Where was Dad staying?

I think Dad might have been down
here then, he must have been.

Dad? Do you think we should just
open that window?

It might just fly straight out.
Seriously. If it goes a bit crazy,

why don't we open
the window for a second?

And then he came in and he was like,
"I know what to do," and he went

and got a net from one
of the outbuildings.

Wahhh!
ANGEL SHRIEKS

Oh!

And he caught the bat. Did he?
Yeah, and he let it go.

Well done, Dad.
You're a superhero.

# Doo-doo-do-do-do. #

Don't put it near me!

Despite the bat incident, Dick and
Angel decided they'd keep the room.

By January 2017, two years after
they'd moved in,

Angel had created two guest suites

and established a fledgling
wedding business.

Bump, bump, bump. Bump, bump!

Her family though was still
camping in what had once been

the Countess de Baglion's
private rooms.

Dick and Angel had the main
bedroom at the front.

Dorothy and Arthur the back.

And they all shared a rather
ramshackle bathroom in the middle.

This was the first room that we
actually got functional.

I've nearly forgotten what
it was like,

but there was actually a wall here
that had to be knocked down,

stud wall up.

Dick put the bath in and
put a toilet in.

It did get easier.

Just because things, although it was
disorganised,

it was organised chaos in there.

We knew where everything was

and even the stud wall
became quite useful.

In fact, I kind of miss
that stud wall.

Every noggin was a shelf.

And it was fine because we knew
at some point, it would get done.

Before the wedding season started,

Angel grabbed the opportunity to
move her family...

Oh, Dorothy's hairclip, I need that.

..into the much more luxurious
Honeymoon Suite.

When we moved out of our suite
into this suite,

it was funny because Arthur
was like, "Oh, I like this!

"I really like that bath, Mum.

"Mmm, that's a nice sink."

SHE LAUGHS

Dick and builder mate Steve

though were hoping to make the
family bathroom just as impressive.

Turn the tap off.

Is it off? I think it was the
small one. Tap's off?

No, that's on.
Turn them both off.

No, it won't go off.

While Dick dabbled with the drips,

Angel thought about the look
of the rooms.

I bought this light in my
favourite charity shop.

I think it was three euros.

But I love it.

I love all the stripes in it.

They're quite gentle.

It's just cute.

And I've managed to find
some really,

really, really beautiful stripy
tiles.

And they're going to
be in the bathroom,

to sort of keep the fact that
there is a little bit of
a stripe theme going on.

But it's going to be subtle,
it's going to be really gentle,

it's not going to be
too in-your-face.

I love a stripe.
SHE GIGGLES

Stripes, to me, have always been
synonymous with fairgrounds

and funfairs. I think I've taken
that joy from my childhood,

kind of putting
into our French life.

And why not have it in the kids'
room? It's a fun place to be.

Oh, that's all right, isn't it?

I think it looks quite good,

although Dick says it
makes his eyes go funny.

Pleased with the results,
Angel decided to extend the stripy

theme from the children's
room into their own.

This paint, that is just a colour
I am totally in love with.

You know, you've got to wake up
and you've just got to love
where you are.

I just sort of said, "Oh, right,
she's putting stripes."

"Stand still, Dick."

When it came to lighting,
Angel decided to go global.

I was looking at our bathroom
and it's a bit too grown-up.

It's a bit too nice,
it's not fun enough for the kids.

So, I did some research and I've
bought three globes

and I'm going to try and make them
into lights.

And we're going to

put little holes in every
country that we've been to.

I've been all over Ireland.

Should we just cut this hole out?

It feels like you're going to be
really competitive.

Of course I am!
ANGEL LAUGHS

Right, you do Belfast.

Hmm. And what parts of America
have you been to?

I've been to Miami.

Where are we? Where's Kathmandu?
Oh, it's up here.

Oh, gosh, it's pressure.

Well, that's lucky because we've
been all over that part of France.

THEY LAUGH

Oh, that's really neat.
I love it.

And there's part of me that is,
like, a little bit sad that

I've not seen so much of the world.

I've never been down here at all.

We'll have to go places to
go and get extra holes.

Before she and Dick
travel the world though,

Angel first wanted to give her
children somewhere warm to sleep.

I think the Strawbridge Suite,
it had to be fun cos it's family,
isn't it?

And... It's the most occupied
suite in the house. Yeah.

If you've got a family and kids,
there just has to be a bit of
playfulness.

When you've, like, lived out
of a suitcase for a couple of years,

essentially that's what we have...

it's just going to feel really,
really nice.

We've claimed the house back now
and, you know, we're living in it.

The fact that this is something for
us and the kids and the family,

you know, it's quite a special
moment actually.

Arthur, your bedroom. Arthur!

What do you think? Whoa!

What do you see? Good!

A lion and a tiger...

We had a couple of years with
wallpaper falling off the walls,

the ceiling kind of flaking,

a stud wall was our shelving cabinet
and we were happy.

Got more comfortable
when we had lights.

And electrical plugs.

A few years later, it's not just
comfortable, it's just home.

The kids' room,
they love it still.

Although Arthur did say, "When am I
going to get my own room?"

And I said, "Well, when you're ready
to actually go in a room

"that's probably in the
servants' quarters."

He says, "Oh, no.
Not ready for that."

ARTHUR SCREAMS
Oh! Look in here!

They're just happy in the space
and that's so important, because

we're happy in the house.

We're genuinely very
happy in the house.

It may have taken two years,
but transforming the

Strawbridge Suite meant the family
could finally cosy up in comfort.

A thousand things that go.

What animals can you see?

A lion!

I can see palm trees.

We got there in the end. Mwah!

Our actual bedroom
and the bathroom were simple.

It was just things that, that we,
I liked.

Did you hear the, "It's the sort of
things that we, I like"?

Did you hear yourself? You just
said that. "It's all the
things that we, I like."

I know, I did say that on purpose.

We're taking a look at how Angel's
stunning design ideas

transformed their 19th-century
chateau

into a 21st-century
home and business.

This is beyond better than what
I imagined.

I love it.

One of her most impressive
projects was back in 2017

when she turned two small servants'
rooms into a romantic guest suite.

The boudoir
wasn't a difficult suite.

Did I just say that out loud?

Nestled at the top of the chateau,

Angel's idea was to knock two
servants' rooms into one,

but keep their separate doorways.

We had lots of discussion about how
to make those two rooms work.

The idea of having
two doors into a room...

I don't normally come in
here on my own.

There's always someone
to open that other door.

I like having this here.

I know what my husband says,
yes, I know,

but it adds a cosiness to the rooms
that I think is quite nice.

But back in the spring of 2017,
Dick wasn't convinced.

Right, talk to me
about this boudoir.

I love the fact that
when I first saw this,

that these two doors
were at an angle.

Right? And I want to keep this
vestibule exactly as it is.

But, but hold on.

Can I carry on for a second
then you can say?

I want to keep... This is ugly.

It's not ugly.

This angled doorway is lovely.

Whenever you go to a room

and you say, "Right, we are
going to do this room."

I have no idea what direction
you are going to go.

I don't want them to go,
I like them

and I think they're fun and I don't
want to lose the history of that.

What I would like
to come down is this.

Don't, don't, don't hit it too hard
or it will come down now.

OK, well, I'm quite in the mood
to get that going.

Whoa, that's coming down.

Has to come down?
That has to come down.

So, from here to here
is a lovely bathroom space.

The second servant's room would,
once the dividing wall had gone,

be turned into the guest
suite's bedroom.

Obviously that's
coming down as well.

Oh, that's something.

Now put this in here.

Because this was a toilette.

Have you looked inside? I have.

Still visible inside one
of the cupboards

were pages from a Parisian newspaper

that 140 years ago had been used
to line the walls.

That says 1880?

1880!

The Paris journals,
they are beautiful.

I love that it says oriental
fashion is coming in.

A bit behind the times.

There is also a really nice recipe
for a chicken dish.

Chicken Royale.

Fashion for babies, for example.

But if we don't keep those,
they can be forgotten too easily

and we are only part of the story of
the chateau, aren't we? Yeah.

As both rooms were quite cosy,

Angel decided they'd make
the perfect romantic hideaway.

I want this to feel a bit different.

I'm going to go quite dark
in this room, strangely. Are you?

Yeah, I've got black and gold and...

Turkish brothel, I think
was the phrase I...

I don't know actually
what that means.

Boudoir is not particularly
the best word

but I want a different feel
to this room.

While Angel thought about
the final look,

builder mate Steve began
the prep work.

Steve? Yes?

Whether Dick liked it or not,

the two-bedroom doors were now
officially a design feature.

Oh, yeah.

Aw. I love this.

I know it's so random but I'm
so glad we didn't take that down.

Yeah. Well done.

Makes the room though, doesn't it?
Huh?

It makes the room.
I think it makes the room.

It does. Oh, you're so on my side.

Now Angel had the structure
she wanted,

she turned her attention to creating
the boudoir's sultry good looks.

The boudoir suite, well,
it was a dark suite,

up in the servants' quarters,
so it felt natural

when we celebrated it
with the dark colours and dark reds.

Rich colours. Yeah, rich and dark
and black and gold.

Angel was also keen to create
an Art Deco style bathroom

like the one in the Botanical Suite,

but this time it was going to be
a lot more decadent.

I'm always drawn to Art Deco
everything

and I'm just loving all this black
and gold.

I think probably my love of Art
Deco is its simpleness.

They love a bit of symmetry
around that time, and I do too.

And it had a real elegance about it.

Angel may have been in love
with the idea,

but builder mate Steve
was given the job

of turning it into a reality.

Hello, hello.
I have a gift for you - dah dah.

Wow.

Right.

While black metro tiles
were easy to source,

a bright gold grout was
a completely different matter.

So these arrived but I think
we're going to need a lot more.

I do too.

I want sort of like a lovely
like shiny gold colour.

What I had seen was this beautiful
picture of some tiles

with this lustred grout
that was beautiful

and that was the inspiration
behind the grout.

Is lustre and glitter not the same?

No, because lustre,
I think in my mind,

is kind of a shimmer over it and
it's much more elegant and gentle,

whereas glitter is kind of
prominent.

Dorothy does glitter, doesn't she?

Dorothy does glitter.
Mummy does lustre.

OK. I just don't understand.

But as Mummy's lustre was giving
Steve the Midas touch...

Steve's going to glitter
and shine in the sunshine

when he gets outside.

..Angel switched tactics.

It's golden grout o'clock.

A tube of gold oil paint was deemed
a far less messy option,

though just as painstaking.

It's going to take a little
while but it's going to look great.

Transforming the 19th century
servants' rooms

into a 21st-century guest suite not
only took a lot of patience

but also quite a bit of effort.

Nice and heavy, isn't it?

Mind your ankles.

And Angel's penchant for vintage
lighting

didn't exactly speed things along.

I feel like I'm in trouble
for getting this.

Well, you don't really think
about anything else,

you just get it because it looks
what you want it to be.

Well, I got it because
it was also really cheap.

My issue,

I think it's the wiring.

It's a single wire going into
each bulb.

And you've got to get a wire
in each one of these? Hold on.

This is easy compared to the other
ones you've given me to do.

Since we have started dating,

Dick has always been my problem
solver, my Mr Fix anything.

I think you've made
a rod for your own back.

It's my fault.

Yeah.

Once Dick had worked out the wiring,

Angel gave the light a bit
of Art Deco decadence

in line with the black and gold
bathroom suite.

By the summer of 2017,
the boudoir suite was finished.

What had once been two servants'
rooms

now a romantic snug filled with rich
colours and textures.

The boudoir suite was always going
to be a dark suite

and it's worked really well,
actually.

The blacks, the golds,
the maroons, burgundies, all of it.

It is genuinely a nice place to be.

I think as a couple, it's actually,
it's really romantic.

One to sit in the bath,
one to sit in the chair and to talk.

It's a nice thing. It's the sort
thing me and Dick would do.

And it's nice. It's a nice room.

Over the last four years, Angel's
creative designs have transformed

the chateau into a stylish home...

Look at that.
Oh, my God, I love it.

..and place to stay.

Which is your favourite suite?
