San Francisco remained

an overgrown frontier town.

In '51, the bulletin counted

more than 600
resorts in the city,

but failed to find
one public place

where a man might take his wife.

The first change in
this state of affairs

came in '52 when Charlie
Tuttle sold the Golden Nugget

and built the most elegant
hotel west of St. Louis.

He opened the Bella Union

with San Francisco's
first full-dress ball.

It was a wedding ball, his own.

- We're miners from the crick.

Out of the way.

- Oh, Mr. Tuttle,

would you go and
see what's wrong,

'cause brother Ned
has got such a temper?

- Why, certainly. Excuse me.

- All right, please men.

Gentlemen, gentlemen.

Would you go on
about your business?

(guns firing)
(men yelling)

- Looks like a tin pan serenade.

- Oh, chivalry?

(guns firing)
(men yelling)

- He's dead, ma'am.

Shot.

- [Announcer] The Californians.

* I've come to where life if
best, in the golden West *

* I'm gonna strike it rich

- The following morning coroner
Doc Crow held an inquest

in the Bella Union.

- Just like I told you, Marshal,

me and the boys come in
to town for a few days

to live it up.

Of course we was
raising up a ruckus,

but we didn't have the first
notion of harmin' anybody.

- Mr. Shankey, these five
shooters belong to you

and Mr. Nizer there.

Seven shots were
fired from them.

- Not at nobody, Marshal.

The boys already told you
we were just pistol popping

to make a little noise.

- [Matt] And you'd say the
shooting was an accident.

- [Joe] Yes, sir, that's the
only way I can figure it.

- Thank you Mr. Shankey.

- It would appear from
Mr. Shankey's evidence

that the shooting
was an accident.

- Accident, nothing.

- Just a moment, madam, please.

I don't recall this lady as
being on our witness list.

- She's miss Molly Wallis,
friend of the deceased.

- Oh, I see.

And you wish to
testify Miss Wallis?

- I just want to say you
better not call it an accident.

- Ooh, have you any reason

- Well, Marshal, is there

- Well, sir, Miss Wallis
came into my office

about three weeks ago.

You see, I'd first met Molly
about, quite a while ago

when she was helping Mr. Tuttle
run the Gold Nugget saloon.

(ethereal harp music)

Matt, I hate to come to
people with my troubles.

- Troubles are my business.

- Oh, it's that silly
old fool, Charlie.

Years ago, he gave
me my first boost.

And he's taken me right
up the ladder with him.

I'd stick my arm in
the fire for him.

- I've gathered that.

- About a year ago, we
planned the Bella Union.

I was gonna run the hotel part.

Last month, he met a young
widow off the Panama Clipper.

Didn't know where for three
days until he her brother

to manage the new place.

- The whole shebang?

- Yes, said it was a man's job.

He'd already fallen for
this little fuzzbrain

like a weighted anvil.

And this morning he tells
me he's gonna marry her.

- Molly, are you sure you're
not just being a jealous woman?

I'll admit that, but I'm
not here because of that.

I'm here because Charlie's
headed for bad trouble.

- How do you mean?

- Matt, this Charlotte's
less than half his age.

She doesn't care that for him.

She despises him.

She and this Carpenter,
that's her brother,

they're out to take him
for every cent he's got.

- All right, Molly

what I'd do to Charlie

if he stuck his nose into my
affairs the way you're asking?

with Miss Wallis that day.

outside of being so jealous
that she can't sit still

is that she just
doesn't understand nice respectable people.

- Oh, I don't, don't I?

- [Matt] Molly.

- Charlotte and her brother
are real aristocrats.

They're from Mississippi.

They lost their
plantation in a fire.

- Sure, they'll be able to
build one with gold pillars

by the time they're through
with you, my friend.

We've been together
for quite a while

and I'm as beholden to
you as you are to me.

And I can't truly
say I love Mr. Tuttle

the same way that
I loved Mr. Haynes.

He was handsome and
brave and talented

and well born, and completely
unprincipled and unreliable.

But I loved him wildly.

And I was completely miserable.

But Mr. Tuttle's a
different kind of man.

He's a man that I
respect and I admire.

And I hope to make
him a very good wife.

- Even if this place fails?

It very well could, you know.

Supposing he had to go
back to keeping a saloon

or digging for gold
with a pick and shovel?

- Even then, especially then.

Because then I could add
a more equal contribution.

And I could prove to everyone.

Perhaps this is a little proof

intrude in my affairs?

Really couldn't find
anything worse than a

older man in love

in the circumstances

of the shooting that
would indicate foul play?

That is to say, was
there anyone standing

in front of Mr. Tuttle
other than the miners?

- Mrs. Tuttle was
standing by me.

Mr. Carpenter was
over by the door.

in the Golden Nugget.

Everybody saw me.

And if you're trying to
switch suspicion to me,

let me point out that
if this had happened

- And did you find
a will, Marshal?

Wallis as the sole heir.

(Molly scoffing)

(crowd murmuring)

- Doc, I don't think that

agree with Marshal Wayne.

I know Mrs. Wallis
dislikes me and

that she's done everything
she can to harm me.

I also believe that
she loved Mr. Tuttle.

I don't believe she could
have found it in her heart

to plan to kill him.

- How noble.

You're making quite
a case for yourself.

Can't we have a verdict on this?

(crowd murmuring)
(dramatic music)

- All take your seats, please.

It is the verdict of
this coroner's jury

that the deceased Charles Tuttle

met his death by
accidental shooting.

- It's a lie.

(dramatic music)

Are you all blind?

Can't you see?

Didn't you hear what I
was trying to tell you?

Charlie was murdered.

She killed him, her and
that brother of hers.

They killed him to
get everything he had.

(slow dramatic music)

there like he said he would.

- Do you know his name?

before, Mr. coroner.

- Can you describe him?

- Like a hundred other
fellows I can call to mind

Kind of tall complected
and medium, I don't know.

- Oh, that's very helpful.

- Shankey, would
you recognize him

if you ran into him again?

- Sure as shootin' I would.

- Well, I certainly hope so.

I'd like to talk

tar flats, the waterfront.

Poor old Shankey didn't have
very much of a chance, Matt.

- The fellow got his
pistol away from him,

and then shot him

as he was attempting to
get up off the floor.

Now, the bullet took
its course thusly.

It struck the left clavicle,
that's the collarbone.

- I see.

- And was then deflected
downward through the heart

and emerged out the
upper lumbar region.

- Say that slowly now.

- Oh, Matthew, the bullet
struck the left clavicle.

And then it-

- Exactly.

That's the way you describe
Charlie Tuttle's wound.

- Very probably they were
both very much the same as...

I say.

- Doc, they were
both shot from above.

Charlie Tuttle was standing
in front of the hotel

when he was killed.

That means that none of the
miners could have done it.

Come on.

Let's see, Charlie was
standing right about here

when he was shot.

Matthew, that would mean
the angle of the shot

came from that direction, down.

(dramatic music)

- The shot could have
come right from there.

And he occupied this room the

- Gentlemen.
