under urgent orders
from Washington DC,

the Navy began construction

of Mare Island Navy Base
in San Francisco Bay.

Almost immediately,

a gang of outlaws began
intercepting supplies

to resell them in Seattle.

It got so bad the
Commodore called for help

to escort the monthly
payroll to the base.

We used a new trail.

The route was
supposed to be secret.

(dramatic ominous music)

(fist crunches)

(blow thuds)

(dark ominous music)

(somber foreboding music)

(dramatic suspenseful music)

Here's the dispatches

(knuckles rapping)

- What happened, Marshall?

- Ambushed, three
miles out of town.

One of your men was wounded.

- They got the
payroll, of course?

- Of course.

Do you think the Navy

has sprung a leak, Commodore?

- What do you mean by that?

- I was personally in
charge of that payroll.

The time and the route

were closely guarded
secrets from everyone,

everybody but the
bandits, that is.

- Are you insinuating that...
(knuckles tapping)

- You sent for me father?

- Yes, come in.

- This is Marshall Wayne.

Marshall, my son, David.

- David.

- Marshall Wayne, I've,
uh, heard a lot about you.

Sorry to hear what
happened to you, sir.

(Matt chuckles)

- So am I.

- I have good news, David.

Your papers arrived
this morning.

Come and sit down and sign them.

David is going to
attend the, uh,

new Naval Academy at Annapolis.

It's developing into
a fine school, Matt.

I wish I could have gone there.

- I'm sorry, Father. I can't.

- You know I don't wanna
go to the Naval school.

I don't want to go to sea.

- We'll discuss

- Has some silly notion

Explain yourself.

had a Navy background.

some boyish whim.

- I am not a boy.

(Commodore sighs)

- The fact that
you have to shave

twice a week does

- I suppose a Navy uniform
will turn the trick.

- If you earn the right
to wear one, it will, yes.

- Well, what's wrong
with being a rancher?

- You have to be a
man to be a rancher.

In the first place,

Commodore's officers seem
to be a steady-going bunch,

all married except one,
and he was a chess player.

Maybe the Commodore was right.

was in my barrel.

I gave up for the
day and dropped in to pick up my laundry.

(foreboding music)

- All right, Lee.

- Thank you.

- [Matt] The last place
I'd expect to find a clue,

and there, naturally,
I found it on a barrel.

(suspenseful music)

Can I borrow these, young man?

- Yeah.

- Thanks.

(foreboding music)

Lee, these saddlebags.

Where'd your son get them?

- From me.

- Oh? Where'd you get 'em?

- I find them.

- Where?

where I deliver my laundry.

of operating a rusty wheel.

- Oh, Matt Wayne.

Commodore Cameron.

- Why don't you let the
Commodore run his own risks?

- What have you got
against the Commodore?

- I don't like the
way he treats his son.

- David?

- Hmm.

- What's he to you?

- Well, I met him and his mother

about two years ago coming
out here, in Panama.

I was with Mrs.
Cameron when she died.

And I've been seeing
quite a bit of David.

He comes in here quite often.

- To gamble?

- No, to talk.

The poor kid's lonesome.

His father's a bully.

- Why do you say that?

- Well, David wants
to be a rancher,

and his father insists
that he joins the Navy.

- All of which is
none of your business,

but I didn't come in
here to chat about David.

by the name of Bolin?

- Yeah, he's a crook.

about three months ago.

- Any idea where

- He works the Lucky Seven.

(foreboding music)

What do you know about him?

- I told you about
him this morning.

- I thought you said
he didn't gamble.

- He doesn't.

He came back the next

We talked about his mother

and he's been coming
back ever since.

- Looks as though you're
taking his mother's place.

He was gambling with Bolin.

David lost,

and the two of them got
up and went off together,

and I asked around

and people said that
they'd been seen together

a lot recently.

- Oh, that doesn't prove
he's done anything wrong.

- Hmm, maybe it doesn't to you,

but I think it
will do his father.

Your customers need you.

(dark foreboding music)

I think I owe you an
apology, Commodore.

I checked your officers.

They're 100% loyal.

- So it was one of
your own men, eh?

- No, it wasn't one of my men.

- Well, it was a leak,
you convinced me of that.

- Oh, there was

- You're certainly not
pointing your finger at me?

- Nobody else had access to
this office, except my son.

(foreboding music)

(footsteps tapping)

off the premises.

(uneasy music)

(dramatic suspenseful music)

(foreboding music)

- Now look.

You better come along,

or the old man'll have
you hung from the yardarm.

- Oh hello, Marshall.

Waiting to see my father?

- No, David. I'm not.

Come on in.

As a matter of fact,

I, uh, just had quite an
argument with your father.

- Oh, what about?

- I don't know how I
could have been so wrong.

I had a notion that
one of his officers

might be acting as a spy
for these payroll bandits.

- Oh?

- His officers are 100%,

just as he claimed them to be.

It's funny how things work out.

I never would have
suspected who it was.

- You, uh,

you think you know
who, who the spy is?

- Yes, this morning somebody

said he was awfully sorry

to hear what had happened to me.

And later I remembered
that and I thought,

"How would this person

possibly know what
had happened to me

unless he himself
were involved?"

(tense foreboding music)

David, how did you know
what had happened to me?

How did you get involved
with this Mr. Bolin?

(tense melancholy music)

- Before I knew what happened,

I'd lost $500 more to Bolin.

It was about time that work
started at Mare Island.

I couldn't pay.

I couldn't have Bolin
going to my father.

So he made me tell him when
the shipments were due.

(ominous music)

- Bosun. Bosun!

- Yes, sir.

- Place that man under arrest.

- I'll need reinforcements, sir.

- I mean my son.

- No, you don't.

(footsteps crunching)

- Have Lieutenant Saunders

write an order for my signature,

my resignation from
the United States Navy.

(tense music)

- David, David,
why did you do it?

- Because I wanted to
get away from my father.

Mrs. Fansler,
please lend me $300.

There's a boat leaving tomorrow.

I'll pay it back. I promise.

thought it would do any good,

make things worse.

He didn't wanna go
to Naval School,

but instead of arguing it out
man-to-man with his father,

he decided to run away,

but he didn't have the
courage to make it on his own.

He had to have an easy way.

- Matt.

- Wait, instead of working

to make a living, you gambled,

but you couldn't take
the consequences.

You had to sell out your father,

betray your country,

and turn its goods
over to thieves.

Lucky thing for you
there wasn't a killing.

You'd also be a murderer,

instead of what you are,

a lying, sneaking,
thieving little coward.

- Don't you dare talk
to David that way.

- All right, I'll let
him talk for himself.

- Marshall, I could kill you,

I never looked at
it that way before.

It was always easier
blaming my father.

Oh, what a mess I've
made of my life.

in the morning.

- Where does he plan

drive a wagon and a team?

stole a lot from you,

your manhood, for one thing.

Wouldn't you like to meet
him at Black Rock tomorrow

and get it back from him?

anyone more than once.

have a chance, Marshall?

- If you bribe the
driver, I think you could.

(gentle hopeful music)

I run a gambling house

where your son's been
spending his time.

- In gambling, no doubt.

They're gonna trap the bandits.

broadside for a civilian, son.

(David panting)

I think maybe I've

- Nothing to speak of.

- In that case I,

I have to turn you
over to Marshall Wayne.

Are you ready, son?

- I'm ready, father.

(palm slapping)

(dramatic tense music)

by getting me up at 10
o'clock in the morning?

- I thought you might like
to read the good news.

Judge put David on probation.

- Oh, I'm glad.

I know he'll be all right.

All he needs is to get
away from his father.

- The Navy refused to accept
the Commodore's resignation.

- Wonderful.

- And David has been paroled
in his father's custody.

them join the Navy?

- He won't have to.

David's enlisted.

- Now that he's proven to
himself that he's a man,
