I've just got some very basic
questions to understand.

Do you have any form of drainage?

We've actually got a manhole cover
that drops into a drain,

so there's a possibility to run
a drainage pipe

straight down into that drain.

OK, from my perspective,
a plan with south on it

and also relative position of
Tilly, the drain,

then you can shape your room
and you can shape your room

because obviously Linda and Angel,
they'll sort out what

things are going to be there and
what the feel is going to be like.

Kintsugi.

Celebrate the imperfections,
let's do that. Absolutely.

Make them beautiful. I think all
imperfections are gorgeous anyway.

otherwise we'll end up with
gold marks and tattoos, fella,

to go with our kintsu..ragi..ugu.

Kintsugi is a Japanese art using
gold to mend broken objects.

Kin, meaning gold,
tsugi means joinery,

it's a beautiful way
to celebrate imperfections

and you don't have to
use real gold.

Tell me about this bath,
beautiful lady.

This is something with age
and history,

and I like celebrating
the fact that it's really old,

and that's why when Linda said
she wanted to do Kintsugi, I really,

really liked that and I want to give
this a go to see if it works.

I'm just being as brutal
as I'm going to be.

I'm just taking off
all the flakiness.

Right, come in, baby,

So this is the gold.

This one is an outside metal paint.

I couldn't find bath enamel.
It might be out there.

dribbled it on there. I have, yes.

You're literally just going to
fill the gap up with paint.

That's just going to go up
to the lip of that. Yeah.

OK, so the plan is working.

This would be very, very therapeutic

if I wasn't bent over in the bath!

This looks exactly like how
I thought it was going to look

and when it's dry, all I've got to
do is put the sort of hard enamel,

sort of clear resin over the top
and good to go.

Well, there's no time to watch paint
dry as we have another request.

We're getting people from over in
the west, up in the north,

down in the south.

All over the country,
people are doing bits.

what's she doing.

Hi, my name is Alisha
and I'm from Yorkshire

and the project I would really
like help with is my back yard

because at the moment, it's just
four walls and a concrete floor.

Wow.

I'm a chef, I belong in the kitchen

and I do not know where to start
when it comes to the garden.

We can get a lot of productivity
in a concrete square.

I would really like this outside
space to be able to produce seasonal

vegetables that I am able to
use in the kitchen, but also I would

love the back yard to be able to act
like my own personal supermarket.

I like that phrase -
my own personal supermarket.

That's the relationship your mum
has with our walled garden.

She's been out there with
actually a shopping bag!

Six years ago, when I first saw
the chateau's walled garden,

I fell instantly in love.

And with a few years of nurturing,
the potagerie now provides

the family with a wealth
of fruit and veg.

I'm keen to share my gardening
know-how with Alisha,

so where better to meet her
than in the Walled Garden itself?

And you're growing stuff already.

You don't need me.

I can grow stuff in the window,
but put me in the back yard,

don't have clue where to start,

Is it about flavour

It's to do with the flavour.

Working in the industry, the food
that we use, it's forcefully grown,

because we need so much of it.

Quality is what I would say
is the most important.

What I really could do with is for
you to give me a plan of your garden

pointing where south is, where
you've got some soil, at all, yes?

And where it's just solid concrete,
let me know.

What are you like with your DIY?

It's not up there with my cooking,
but it's not too bad.

We've got some weeding to do.

A few days ago, we
asked Linda and Andrew

to fully map out the site
of their alfresco bathhouse,

but they've gone one better,
and also sent us a guided tour.

And then we go
round into the area

that we're going to
build the bathhouse.

That's nice. We're back to
the house looking down. Yeah.

That's the view they'll have from
the bath, that's the key, isn't it?

Right, that's the plan.

Oh, I'm liking the
feel of this, though,

there's going to be lovely decking.

So Tilly's moving to there.

The drain is on the other side,

the drain, you see, you can go
through the hedge to the drain.

It's not an issue. Mm-hm. Yep.

The drainage might not be an issue,

but there'll be no bubble baths
until I plunge into the plumbing.

Andrew's got a decision to make,

how's he going to heat his water?

You can get a heating element,
you dangle into big baths,

and it heats the whole lot up,

maybe 30 quid will
get you one of those.

You can go to the fossil fuel
solution, using gas or oiL

I can't see that being
the right thing for him.

It's just going to be a bit smelly,
and I don't think we want that.

When it comes down to wood,
we can get a little stove

with a back boiler.

That's what we've got across
in the domes for the hot tub.

And of course, the all singing
all dancing solar solutions,

slightly more complex, could
cost himmgetting on for a grand.

But the key thing about
the plumbing for Andrew is

the fact that he has
to raise his bath,

because the drain is actually
uphill of where the bath's going.

It's just a fact of life.

He's got a little bit of thinking
to do, but this is a good solution,

cheap as chips and heats your water.

Let's see what they come up with.

Preparations continue
for Dorothy's birthday,

and no party is complete
without a chocolate cake.

Grandma's put all the dry
ingredients in there.

We just need to remember the recipe.

It's flour, sugar, um...

"bicarbonate of
soda and baking powder.

And coca!

Yeah.

It's the bicarb of soda
that makes it go so fluffy

when you put the hot water in.

So it's a very, very clever recipe.

We're going to be making
Dorothy's favourite, a slime cake,

with icing to match
her multicoloured mermaid shed.

All the wet stuff now
which is two eggs, oil,

milk and a little
bit of vanilla essence.

to be absolutely fantastic.

I'm in the back yard,

and I'm here to show
you where the mud is

and to show you
what kind of mud it is.

I'm gonna have to teach Alisha
to say soil instead of mud.

Arthur and Dorothy play in the mud,

but Alisha and I are
going to work in the soil.

This mud is thick with pebbles,

and I'm not too sure if it
can grow anything, to be honest.

The garden is
basically north facing.

That means the far end of the garden

is going to be where
most of the light is.

Just what it is,
you've haven't got a choice

when it comes to these things.

So, here's my list,
probably a little unrealistic,

but I would love to have a herb
bed with your basics,

like basil, thyme, rosemary, chives,

a salad bed. I'm mean who
wouldn't want a salad bed?

Well done, Alisha.

So, here's some of the equipment.

I have this absolutely
beautiful pallet wood.

She is just so, so ready
to get stuck into this.

Right, I need Alisha to be clearing

that whole area,

and then I'm going to show
her how to build a planter

out of her pallets.

And we're going to go up.

A tiered planter is
useful in any garden,

but it's a great addition
when outside space is tight,

or its difficult to dig down,

exactly the issues Alisha has.

So I'm going to show
her how to make one.

I've dismantled some pallets,

and now I'm screwing them
together into a basic box

to match the width of my beds.

Babes, that took
you about 90 seconds.

This is bits of palate that's
the right shape to fit in there.

That is a bed that gives
a depth of extra compost or soil

and allows things
to grow through it.

But because of the space
being limited in the yard,

I want to go up in the air.

This is my support for the back.

We're already starting
to going up the wall.

Here we go. Next one.

I'm just going to
fill this up with compost

and then literally planting it.

One of the things about
any container growing

is losing the
moisture in the summer,

so hence line it with the plastic.

And this bed is going to
have in it all the things

that taste very special
when you grow your own.

It's been a few weeks since we've
caught up with Linda and Andrew,

and since then, it's
been all hands-on deck,

and in this case, quite literally.

Decking's looking good.

I'll show you the piece I'm
going to be making good.

I have a satellite chair,

now I've seen it in situ,

I have to say I'd love

and gold is an amazing way to go.

of your, of your area, isn't it?

So as Linda and Andrew
charge on with their project,

I'm turning my attention to Alisha
and her garden transformation...

...as she creates the tiered
planters I showed her.

There we go.

And the sooner she starts planting,

the sooner she'll have
produce ready to eat.

I've had my spuds chitting. What?

See the little
shoots coming out there?

They're quite delicate, so I
have to handle them carefully.

His is where it all starts to grow.

There's lots of ways
of getting started,

this is such a simple one,

and because the whole
of her yard is a yard,

her being able to do something
that's sat on top of the bricks,

and it'll grow, it's a very
useful, quick way of doing things.

And here we have a forever bag,

and this forever bag is now
going to be a forever potato bag.

And all I'm going to do
is put some soil in it.

One good seed potato
is usually enough for,

we usually have two
heads of potatoes for a meal

for the four of us.

So that's a meal for four.

OK. So these little spuds,
here we go in, watch.

Look at this.

Just put those little bad boys in
like that.

What I'm going to do is,
on the top of them,

I'm just going to
shake the soil out.

Anything that looks
like weed we get rid of.

Another five go in.

So, here we go, like that.

Like that. See there?

Four months from now,
that will be a bag of greenery.

Then what we're going to do,

turn it all out and
just pick out the spuds.

Much easier than digging.

And all the hard work is almost
done for Linda and Andrew

and their alfresco bathroom.

The fencing is up.

And Linda has applied her
Midas touch to the bath.

It's looking good.

Oh, a classic. A haberdashery box.

It's primarily sort of bits
and bobs for sewing

where you collect it all together.

But I think in the old days, ladies
would put, I don't know,

love letters and sort of things
that...

You know, don't touch
my haberdashery box.

Oh, wow.

Lovely inside. Look at that.

The inside is...wow, stunning.

Look, Made in England.
I always used to get excited

when I went round the boot fairs
and I saw that sort of gold sticker.

My nan was really sweet.

This haberdashery box has got
a treasure

of all of her knick-knacks
still to this day.

My nan's got a picture.

That reminds me of your nan,

It really does, doesn't it?

I still remember my grandmother
darning my grandfather's socks

and I've still got
all of that in the box.

I can see it's like
a little treasure,

so I can have it in my house
for many, many years,

but still with her special memories
inside. That would be wonderful.

and actually I had a little tear
in my eye

because I've got a very,
very similar picture of my nan

in her military outfit,

sort of Second World War,
looking remarkably similar.

This is a box of complete treasures.

It needs to sing your nan.

It's still got her pantyhose
repair kit inside.

I mean, it's just fantastic. I know.

There's another thing in here,

I don't really quite know
what it is.

I think it's my grandad's
from the military.

It's got my grandad's initials
on it, and it's just a little pouch.

It's got a number on it. Dick,
do you know that could have been?

That's probably his housewife.

Every soldier has to have their own
needles and thread

to sort out their uniform.
That'll be his army number on that.

That's so true.

Oh, I didn't know that.

That is really touching.

So the box has now doubled
in size of memories.

Yeah, it has, hasn't it?

You're the sort of custodian
of the box now

and I think, you know, you're going
to put your mark on it.

I could really do with some help
though. It's looking very sad,

and it has lived in the garage
for about nine years.

I think what's really great
about it, first of all,

the shape of the box is gorgeous.

and it wasn't just a pouch

stripping down the pallets and doing

A few days ago, I asked Kerry

to take her haberdashery box
back to basics.

Now it's time to see
how she got on,

and what's underneath
that brown fabric.

I'm just going to start

taking off the fabric from around
the sides of the box now,

and I am trying very hard not to rip
the satin.

I don't quite know
what I'm going to find

when I take it all off,
but here goes.

This is the inside.

Oh, my goodness. They're cardboard.

It's completely."disintegrated.

It's come off pretty much
in one piece.

It needed to go absolutely
back to the bone.

She's just got a structure
there now.

These are the side panels,
perfect templates.

As you can see,
hinges are still intact...

Great. ...which is perfect.

She's got it right back.

It is literally a rebuild job
and it's going to be amazing

because of that.

I want to show Kerry how easy it is
to upholster

any simple shaped box and once
transformed,

I plan to fill this
with memories too.

Kerry's box is obviously very
different to this one,

but the principles of this will be
the principles

that Kerry can use on her box.

I've got my faux suede.

It's robust but delicate enough
to go on the box.

Inside, I rummaged through
what I had

and actually I had this
lovely satin.

First things first, I need to cover
the outside,

so I need a piece of material that
is the depth of this part of the box

with a little seam.

Then I've got my little hem down the
edge, and off we go.

Right done.

Next, it's a case of stapling
the fabric to the inside of the box

and cutting two T shapes at the back
to make room for the hinges,

before feeding
the rest of the fabric through.

Pull that for me.

Yeah. That's where I go down, OK.
Look at that!

Did you do that on purpose?

What Kerry needs to do is to get her
hinges into place first

and then she can staple
the rest of the fabric in.

Tuck the corner so it's nice
and neat. Yeah.

Honestly, if you can wrap a present,
you can do this.

Now, this is Dacron.

I use it a lot for giving anything
in upholstery a little bit of shape.

I am literallyjust going
to go like that.

The top layer being
the shape of the top of her box.

Simple as that.

And you can already see...

Oh, look, I'm starting to get
a bit of a nice shape. OK?

Same principles - corners,
a nice little tuck.

OK.

Right, this is my box.

Lovely. It looks nice and smart,
doesn't it? It does.

Once Kerry's got her box done,

she's going to want to do
something to the inside.

I've just covered cardboard,
so I've got my top, my bottom,

my two sides,
and my other two sides.

OK, so that's my top.

Little bit of glue.

You've got to work quick
with the old glue gun. That's it.

When Kerry gets to this stage, she
should have a big smile on her face.

But the most exciting thing is
she's going to open it

and put all of her family
treasures back in.

Things are gearing up here
at the Chateau

as we get ever closer
to Dorothy's birthday party.

Hello, hello. You all right?

I've headed to the kitchen to work
on a very secret project -

icing Dorothy's cake.

Whoa, look at this blue!

Oh, my goodness me.

You can only do that for
seven-year-old's party.

Imagine doing that
for anybody grown-up!

Now, I'm going to take
the top off of this

because I need my cakes to lay - or
Arthur's cakes -

to lay completely flat.

All right, one, two, three.

That is not going to go to waste
because that is lovely,

but actually having that flat cake

is going to make my life
a lot easier.

Next, some inside butter icing.

If you give yourself a little
bit of a circle with icing

when I put the top layer,
if I didn't have that protecting it,

the jam would all go pfft.

And if you're icing the cake
on the outside,

you don't want loads of jam.

I'm going to put it in the fridge
and when it comes out,

this icing's going to be
hard to touch,

so when I put the fancy icing on,
it goes on a lot easier.

I'm not the only one
who's been busy.

Kerry has been transforming her
grandmother's haberdashery box.

What I have decided to do
is use the Dacron,

around the box as well.

And then I'm going to put
the fabric on top.

And Alisha has got truly stuck in
with her new gardening passion.

We have black at the top, pink next
to it, blue, yellow.

Just start down at the bottom.

Oh, Dick I'm so chuffed
with that yellow. Good.

I've chosen colours to match
Dorothy's shed

and will decorate with a slime
inspired topper.

Do you know what?
It's very our daughter 2021.

Is that real gold?

Yes, an edible one but it's quite
a goopy one which is good.

Dorothy's birthday cake
will be hidden safely

until the big reveal at her party.

And talking of reveals, I'm back
in the garden for a final catch up

with green-fingered chef Alisha.

I'm really looking forward to
seeing how far she got. Me too.

The thing about Alisha is
she's realised she can do things.

To begin with, you know, it all
looked like it was too much.

Well, actually, she's done it.

And she's not the only one.

So this is the haberdashery box
on the outside.

I just need to do the inside.

Kerry asked me for help with her
grandmother's haberdashery box.

It was full of memories
but in need of a little TLC,

so I'm back in my tressoir
to find out how she got on.

Fantastic.

Oh, Kerry must be absolutely
delighted.

I think she went further than
she thought she was going to.

She must be so chuffed.

All I need to do is add
the memories back inside.

The first thing that I'm going to
pop in is this little chap here.

This is my dad's very
first teddy bear,

that's going to go in the
box as well.

It looks like a box

This was my nan's. It's the only toy
that she ever had in her house

and we all remember playing with it.

I've been asked to do

Working from the foundations up,

we set about building
a unique shed for Dorothy.

I wanted to give it
a personal touch.

And with Dorothy's creative input,

her mermaid shed has
finally been realised.

And now, joined by all the family,
