So, the scene that we're trying
to re-create is, in fact,

charcoal lighter

on the interior
of a door handle,

and when Harry the burglar
goes to grab it...

...out comes the smoke.

That's third-degree burns.
Everybody giggles.

So we want to know, can
this happen in real life?

So, this type of lighter is
an unprotected heating element,

which is essentially
what you find

inside your electric
stove or oven.

Yes, which they normally
surround with thick metal

and a bunch
of warning stickers.

Before we hop in
and test this hack,

let's get a little bit of
a control measurement here.

Let's see how hot the door
handle is on either side.

through every interaction
without getting caught.

Well, hello there, friends!

And welcome to
let's make a thing,

where one man's trash
is another man's treasure.

Let's see
what's in the box today!

Two-liter bottle.

Whether you're prepping
for the apocalypse

or you just want to use
a port-a-John at Coachella,

we're gonna take
good care of you.

We're making a gas mask.

So, here's what we'll need --
a can, activated charcoal,

cotton rounds, tape,

rubber bands and scissors,

and a sharp, stabby thing.

Let's make a thing!

First things first, gonna
cut off the base of the bottle.

Okay.

But, obviously, we need a hole
to put our face through.

So let's cut that now.
Not the face. Cut the hole.

Easy.

Cut a u-shape around
where the label might have been.

There's a little face hole.

But that could be
a little irritating,

this plastic jabbing
into your delicate skin,

so why don't we protect it?

Line it with some tape.

That's coming together
really nice.

There we go.

This soda can is going to
be the filtration system

for our hacked gas mask.

We're gonna start by poking a
few little holes in the bottom.

Air will be drawn in
through there. There you go.

Then we're gonna cut it off
about 3 to 4 inches.

So that's the bottom
of our filtration canister,

but there's nothing to actually

filter out the particles
in the air,

so that's what we're
gonna build right now.

And first of all,
a cotton round.

The cotton will absorb
any particles

that are floating around.

Then we're gonna sprinkle
some activated charcoal,

and this will bind to any toxic
chemicals and neutralize them.

You can find activated charcoal
in drug stores

or on the Internet.

Now we're going to go ahead
and pop another cotton round

on top of that.

And just for good measure,
another cotton round.

So now we have
our filtration canister.

We're going to jam the soda
bottle into the cotton rounds,

and then we're gonna want
to tape all the way around.

All right, now we're going to
use these rubber bands

to make a bit of a tie.

Secure it to our face.

We're going to cut some holes,
tie a knot in a rubber band.

That stops it
from slipping through.

And feed it through the other
side and tie another knot.

Now we have a strap
to secure our face mask.

There's only one way
to test it out,

so let's bring on the smoke!

Come on, chemical warfare!
You're no match for me!

It works!

Whether it's zombies
or a run-in with martial law,

you're gonna be ready to go,
because you just hacked a thing.

in the lid of the bucket

that is about the diameter
of this stick on the plunger.

Now that that is taken care of,
we need to take our plunger

and cut a few diamond-shaped
holes all around it

so that it will promote
water flow.

Beautiful. We've already
got some water in our bucket,

filled it about halfway.

I'm gonna add some soap.

We pop in the plunger,
put a lid on it.
