I read about all the beautiful temples that were there.

Today, we're going on

a long-tail boat ride in Thailand's capital city.

SAM: Bangkok.

MOLLY: Sam, do you remember what a temple is in Thai?

SAM: Wat.

MOLLY: Good job, buddy.

A temple is called a wat in Thai.

-It's hard to speak Thai. -Or read it.

How do you say "thank you" again?

Khop khun kha for girls,

khop khun khrap for boys.

MOLLY: That's Nutsha.

SAM: She's taking us on a boat ride later today.

What is this temple behind us?

This is our very famous temple.

And have a lot of monk and beautiful temple.

You know, you want to see inside?

SAM: Nutsha took us to see some giant bells inside the wat.

MOLLY: You get to hit them for good luck.

MOLLY: Okay, that's enough luck, buddy.

MOLLY: It was getting pretty bright out,

so Nutsha took us to meet her friend, Sow.

SAM: To decorate our very own umbrellas.

SAM: It can get pretty hot in Thailand.

MOLLY: So people use umbrellas to keep the sun off.

SOW: What do you like to paint?

I like to paint hearts and flowers.

MOLLY: Our boat was coming soon.

to see some of the sights on the river.

SAM: Dad came along, too.

What's this boat called?

A tail boat. Long-tail boat.

Yeah, long-tail boat, in Thai we call ruea hang yao,

because it's have very long tail.

MOLLY: There were a lot of wat along the river.

That's Wat Arun,

which means "Temple of the Dawn."

SAM: And those are the shiny, gold tops of the king's palace.

MOLLY: Sam wanted to know if we could go faster.

But if we go fast, you're going to get wet.

-I know. -So what, who cares.

Let's go fast!

How do you say "go fast" in Thai?

to celebrate Songkran.

SAM: That's the new year in Thailand.

MOLLY: Along the way,

we took some pictures.

SAM: Oh, look at those streets.

SAM: I already got a green cab.

Look at the streets, they're covered in water.

Where am I?

MOLLY: On Songkran, people cover each other in water

to wash away the mistakes from the last year.

SAM: And since

everybody makes mistakes, everybody was getting wet.

MOLLY: I guess Sam, Dad, and I made some mistakes, too.

SAM: That's our friend Boyd.

MOLLY: He's not covered in water.

SAM: Yet.

How do you celebrate Songkran?

We start off with

offering monks the food, offering the food to monks.

Are those the monks way over there?

Yes, it is.

What is a monk?

Monks are good people who dedicate themselves

to their literatures, to the Buddhist literatures.

And then we would go release animals.

Why do you release animals?

We believe that you help -- you help the animal

to be free, give them freedom,

then that will be good luck to us.

So you can't kill an ant?

No.

Oh.

We believe that. Buddhism, they believe that.

SAM: Good luck for not squishing.

BOYD: Should we go offering the food to the monks now?

-Yeah. -Sure.

But since we're wet...

You got to be wet.

SAM: He got us back pretty quick.

At the temple, me and Molly gave food to the kid monks.

MOLLY: In Thailand, people give food to the monks

every single day.

Time to release some animals for good luck!

Look at all the animals, Sam.

-They are eels, eels. -Eels.

Yeah, eels. Those are catfish.

Can we each choose three things to release.

SAM: Then he took us to see a really old kingdom.

MOLLY: It's called Ayutthaya,

and it used to be a huge city.

SAM: But it's mostly ruins now.

It's a big pit.

Look at the elephants.

Are we riding those?

Yes, we are.

SAM: Boyd said the best way to see the ruins is by elephant.

MOLLY: The elephants are all decorated for Songkran.

SAM: We got some great pictures on the elephant.

MOLLY: But even on an elephant,

we couldn't get away from our mistakes.

SAM: Time for us to wash other people's mistakes away.

MOLLY: But first we had to practice.

in Thailand.

MOLLY: Today, Sam and I are visiting a very special

one called a Tiger Temple.

Do you know why they call it the Tiger Temple, Sam?

SAM: 'Cause there are real live tigers there.

MOLLY: Every morning, the monks eat breakfast.

SAM: With the tigers.

MOLLY: This temple is important

because it gives these tigers a new home.

SAM: And a new place to sleep safe and sound.

MOLLY: That's our friend May.

She knew a really cool way

to get to the Tiger Temple.

SAM: Bamboo rafts.

Let's go, guys, hurry up.

We're coming.

Marker fell out.

They're called bamboo rafts because they're made up

of long pieces of bamboo tied together.

SAM: Are we going on the farthest raft?

MAY: Yeah, right over there.

So if anyone falls, it'll be me.

-Be careful, Molly. -Okay.

-Just watch your step. -Don't step in the water.

Is there fish in the river?

Mm-hmm, there's lots of fish.

There's lots of other animals, too.

Just because we can't see them doesn't mean they're not there.

Are there any tigers?

Right now, around here, probably not.

A long, long time ago,

there probably were lots of tigers out here.

What is this river called?

It's called the Khwae Noi.

Notice when you guys go down there that it's spelled K-W-A-I?

Yeah.

Everyone thinks it's "kwai," but that means buffalo in Thai.

It's actually pronounced "kweh."

SAM: Bye, River Kwai.

Hello, Tiger Temple.

MOLLY: This is one of the only places in Thailand

for orphan tigers to go.

SAM: And the temple is getting bigger and bigger

every day so they can help out more tigers.

MOLLY: What kind of tigers are these?

MAY: I'm pretty sure they're Indo-Chinese tigers.

And that's the kind of species that we have in Thailand.

Are tigers related to cats?

Hmm, they are, they are related to cats.

If you look at any of the household cats,

and there's a lot of differences and similarities.

They do the same things, they hunt the same way.

May, do you want to know my favorite thing about tigers is?

Yeah, sure, what?

They're pretty.

-They're pretty, huh? -They look like rock stars.

MOLLY: The tiger temple doesn't just have grown-up tigers.

SAM: They also have two baby kittens.

MOLLY: Sam, baby tigers are called cubs.

Are you sure they're not called kittens?

Pretty sure, Sam.

But you don't know for sure.

It's cubs, buddy, trust me.

How old are they?

They're exactly five months old.

Pretty big.

SAM: We got there just in time for the kittens' --

-Cubs. -Cubs' lunch.

That is a lot of chicken.

Mm-hmm. Now we'll see if we can finish it up, too.

SAM: Here comes the other one.

MOLLY: Sam, should we take some pictures.

SAM: They're already in the water.

Do tigers like to play in the water?

Mm-hmm. Yeah, they do.

They actually are really good swimmers, too.

People don't think so, but tigers can swim a good bit.

They're just playing.

They're kind of just staring each other out.

SAM: Tigers play fight just like me and Molly.

MOLLY: Except they have sharp teeth and claws.

SAM: Your nails are pretty sharp.

Hey, Molly, I'll be the tiger on top.

"Run away, Molly tiger. Rar."

-"Molly tiger, leap." -"Missed me."

MOLLY: "I'm coming to get you."

SAM: "Hey, no biting.

No biting. Run away, run away.

I am the king of rock mountain."

MOLLY: "Not for long."

"Queen of rock mountain."

After watching the tigers play with each other in the water...

SAM: We kind of wanted to play in some water, too.
