according to witnesses.

But Moran still wasn't convinced
and dared Velasquez to shoot

him directly in the chest.

That's when I smacked my chest.

I said, if you're gonna shoot me,

Me being, like you said, a bull, thinking

I was untouchable,
thinking I was Superman.

We'll take whatever pieces that we can

and try to make something work.

It's a struggle just to make sure
that we get to the places

that we need to get to.

It's always going to be about money.

working on within the NWBA

we have new spinal cord

injuries every year.

But as the program gets bigger
and people start learning about it,

that Miami Heat Wheels program

we want, a championship.

you know what I'm saying?

It's as simple as that.

[WIlly] What it means to me
to have this team

is pretty much everything I got right now.

I don't really got nothing else, you know?

[Waldo] The only reason
I really came outside is

to go to basketball practice.

[Mario] Yeah, baby!

[Parnes] In 2010, all we had
to do was get on a bus.

In fact, that's all we had to do,
get on a bus.

The county was providing
$30,000, all right?

This year is the figure that
we will get from the county.

We will get $2,500.

That's it.

[Manny] If we're going to Nationals,
how much money do we need to go there?

In answer to your question, last year,
we spent about $11,000.

[Mario] At Nationals?

At Nationals.

So we've got to keep working hard.

It's not a reason to get down, all right?

That's just the county out of their...

This is in our hands.

So whether we go to Nationals,
we don't know.

But it's certainly up to us.

Certainly we have to play
our way into Nationals,

it actually brought out
the extra drive in me,

knowing that I've got an army behind me.

I have a team.

I like all the other guys,

but I just love to see
Jeremie play basketball

because the things he do in
that wheelchair is amazing.

Did he just really do that?

He get it from his mama.

That's how we win a championship.

Today, we proved that
we're champions, okay?

[Resa] I was five and a half months
pregnant with Jeremie,

and I was a passenger in my mother's car.

She stopped to a stop sign,
and the other gentleman did not stop.

When it was time for her to go,
he blew through the stop sign,

and we was hit in
the passenger side of the car.

I was in the back seat.

And I went into premature labor.

And I wound up having Jeremie
like five days after the accident.

And he was two pounds, 8.5 ounces.

That's my miracle.
He stayed in the hospital 51 days.

Everything they said
he wasn't going to be able to do,

he's able to do it.

But he does have spina bifida
and cerebral palsy.

But to look at him,
you wouldn't think he has anything.

Any challenges, he doesn't
see himself being handicapped.

He's handi-capable.

We never used the word
"handicapped," as a child,

and we don't use it in the house now.

I love that boy. He is my inspiration.

[exhales sharply]

I mean, you never know
how God's gonna bless you.

You never know.

Just take it and be thankful.

I mean, if you don't have
that strong support system

or the belief in yourself
that you can make it happen,

you're gonna put yourself in that box.

You're gonna think about the negatives

and constantly remind yourself,
oh, you can't do this.

Look what you can't do, you
can't do, you can't do...

And think about the things you can.

There is life in this situation.
There's life in this situation.

That's basically what it is.

[Mario] You know, there are people out
there that got feelings, too.

They got heart.

So they're gonna feel bad.

They're going to feel bad for you,
you know what I'm saying?

They're going to think that
you can't do hardly nothing.

But they don't know somebody like me

could do as much as you could do,
maybe even more.

This is, right now,
the light at the end of the tunnel

for me to get out.

So for me, I don't know
if it's a regular life for other people.

They don't have time to
work out as hard as I go.

But I honestly hope
basketball could take my life

and get an education, and move on,
and start a regular life

like a normal person.

The only positive things I do,
I do it for basketball.

I work out for basketball.

I'm going to school here
locally to go play basketball.

I mean, I just thank God for basketball.

[Bill Allen] These guys work so hard

and train so hard so
they can get to college.

They want to go to
college on a scholarship,

and wheelchair basketball
can get some of them there.

Most people don't know that you

can get a scholarship to
play wheelchair basketball,

but you can.

You can play just like any other
student athlete on the NCAA level.

[Orlando] I see those guys that,

they've been playing for years,
and they've been to college,

and they're just,

they've been to Paralympics.

And they just made me want
to work harder, you know.

If they did it, why can't I do it?

Someday, I'll be up there
where they are right now.

[Mario] It's our year! It's our year!

is a newly injured person
is like, my life is over.

Now, I'm in a wheelchair.
I'll never do anything again.

But then, the first time they come out

and they see wheelchair ball,
it's like, oh my God.

You guys can do this?

[crowd groaning and cheering]

[Parnes] I am going to nitpick
for the rest of the season,

because you are too good
of a team not to win

the championship this year, all right?

What we're talking about
is really nitpicky stuff.

I feel disabled right now
because I'm not even pushing.

It's like, I feel like I'm being lazy.

[Allen] I've had
so many people in my life

since I've been disabled ask me
so many different questions.

You can't walk at all?

Everybody looks.

They're curious,
but they don't know, really,

how to ask the questions.

How do you put people with
disabilities in a good light

with physical disabilities?

thinking about wheelchair basketball.

I still can get on the court
and perform on the court.

outside of basketball, I have a life.

[Mario] Basketball fills up
a lot of empty spaces in my life,

a lot.

I left Jersey because
I had to leave Jersey.

It's been a couple of
years back, you know?

I'm not going to get into
a lot of details with it

or nothing like that,
but I realized like two years,

three years later,
that I left Jersey the next day

out of nowhere, without telling
my little sister nothing.

I feel like I raised her a lot
because my father wasn't there,

so I was like the father figure to her.

Why I don't call her?

I feel like I fucked up on her.

I fucked up big time,

leaving without even giving an explanation
and leaving her like that.

You know, like, my brother just left.

He's not coming back no more.

I wish her nothing but the best,
you know what I'm saying?

Don't get me wrong.
Like, that's my sister.

That's blood.

But I believe that
water's thicker than blood.

They say blood is thicker than water,
but not in my case, man.

Water's thinker than blood.
It's just been shown.

My dad owns the house.

I've been here eight years already.

My brother used to live here,

my older brother, but he passed away.

And when I decided to make moves,

the house was here,
so this is where I ended up at.

That's probably the biggest
damage was seeing my dad,

how he ended up changing
his attitude with me

and how our relationship
ended up just going the opposite ways,

and growing apart.

It just hurt me because he told me,
that day that he told me

all that, he told me
that I should have died,

and my brother should
have been the one alive.

So that kind of just shocked me.

I mean, he told me mean things before,
but that one,

it's whatever, man.

I couldn't reply back to him no more.

It's whatever, though, you know?

If I got to live out of my car,
I'm going to live out of my car.

Or if I got to go to a shelter,
I'm going to go to a shelter

until I get things settled down.

But one thing I know for a fact,
I ain't going to stop playing ball,

no matter what I gotta do.

If I've got to push 20 miles a day,
to wake up at 7:00 in the morning

to be there by 5:00 in the afternoon,
I'm going to do it.

It's possible, no excuse.

I could make it happen, no matter what.
I just know I could make it happen.

I don't know the situation
I'm gonna be put in,

but I'll make it happen.

I ain't gonna let basketball stop.

but Jeremie is a minister of music.

He started out in church
playing the keyboard.

And I'm getting teary because
it reminds me of a Sunday.

And he was on the keyboard.

And I thought it was
the head minister of music

and I was like, where's Jeremie?

And when I looked over in the music booth,
it was him playing.

And tears just ran.

And I was like, Lord, I thank you.
I just thank you.

I get caught up when I talk about him.

Right now, it's just music and basketball.

That's all I know.

I got the heart shape of a basketball
that beats music notes.

You get a lot of parents

that want to have their child
so "normal," quote unquote,

that they do not need to be
doing all these wheelchair sports.

There was a kid, one time

and we were sitting there
kind of demonstrating

wheelchair basketball.

And we were having kids come around,

and get into the chairs, and see what
wheelchair basketball was all about.

And I saw this couple
come in with their child.

And the child was excited.
He was like, wow, look at that.

Look what they're doing.

But then, in Spanish,
she replied and said, you know,

of course I understood what
she said, but let's go.

This is not what you want to do.

And seeing this sport that everyone else
that possibly has the same disability,

and they're all happy
that they're doing this.

And she felt that it was...

I don't want to see my child.
He's not disabled.

[Orlando] Is yours like that, too?

Mine is bigger, I think. Mine is longer.

I don't know, bro You tell me.

[Allen] You're an athlete.
You're a wheelchair basketball player.

But you're a human being.

And you've had a trauma happen.

And your life has changed forever.

And you can go to rehab in the hospitals,

but your real recovery
starts when you leave rehab.

And that's when you get slapped
in the face of how different your life is,

over something
that happened in five seconds.

I got shot January 13 of 2006.

Some guys approached me

and said, you're kidnapped.

The guy that approached me had a gun.

The guy next to him told him that
there was people coming in the sidewalk.

And the guy turned.

When he turned, I tried to kick his gun.

The guy shot me twice and ran.

[Mario] I remember telling my friends,
go catch the guy.

I think it's a BB gun.

And it wasn't a BB gun.
It wasn't a fake gun.

As my body kept on getting tight,
every breath I took,

flashback and flashback,
that bright light is true, you know?

You see it in the movies and all of that,

that light and all those flashbacks
of your life is true, and it's crazy.

I just told myself, don't close your eyes.
Because if not, I might die.

From the way to my house to the hospital,

I was thinking of like
all the best moments that happened

since my childhood
to that moment when I was shot.

And it was like,

I thought it was going to be the end.

[Waldo] I moved down to Miami
when I was in the ninth grade

and started hanging
around the wrong crowd,

just trying to be a follower,
not a leader.

I got shot three different times,

one in 2009, and I got shot again in 2010.

And the last time I got shot
was in the back in 2011.

I was in a car accident,
and broke my back.

So I already knew I was
paralyzed as soon as I got hit.

I felt it.
And I don't know, I just couldn't move.

[Orlando] The next thing I remember

was when I woke up maybe
a month later in intensive care.

I'm just laying there
with about 16, 17 staples in my stomach.

So I'm thinking, why I got all
these staples in my stomach?

I thought I was going to get up and leave.

Yeah, they told me, yeah,
I was never going to walk again.

I never thought before

that I was going to be in a wheelchair
all my life, you know?

It's nothing that I have
ever think of before.

[Waldo] When everybody
left the room, it just...

I kind of broke down,
and I cried, actually.

I was, like, more worried about

what people were thinking of me,
how people seeing me or whatever,

than actual life.

[Mario] I started crying.
My mother started crying.

And she asked me, what happened?

You know, I messed up
so many opportunities

that I had to get it straight.

And you know, you don't even...

You just take it for granted, you know?

It takes a lot sometimes for
you to realize stuff, you know?

[Jeremie] And I give big props
to the guys on my team.

Some of the guys have been shot.

And to go through that,
coming in this world walking

and being able to walk, and run,
and play, and this and that,

it's a big privilege.
And you must have a strong mind.

[motorized air pump whirring]

[Willy] I don't think it's
gonna rain that hard.

[Mario] God is good, man.
And anyways, this is the holy water.

Let's go get it.

Then, you're gonna practice like that?

If we have to practice like that,
we have to practice like that.

If it's a war, we've got to fight,
wet or not.

I was going to be able

to get a scholarship
playing wheelchair basketball

or being in a wheelchair.

I never thought it was possible.

[Paul Schulte] There are very few,
you can count on one hand,

other places in the world
that you can go to college

and play wheelchair basketball.

[Rose] To be able to be like,
oh, I'm going to college,

and then people are like, oh, for what?

And I'm like, oh, I'm on
an athletic scholarship

to play wheelchair basketball.

It's just, like I never imagined

I'd be going to a D1 school
on an athletic scholarship.

And I just think that's
the coolest thing ever.

[Mario] Jersey, Jersey, man.

Jersey born, Jersey's own.

God gave me a lot of signs.

I got locked up three times
prior to that last one

I told you guys about.

Nothing happen.

So I guess God said, look,
I'm going to have to stop you.

Ta-ga-ta! I get shot.

It was the best thing
that happened, though.

It's finally home, man.
Home sweet home, right?

That's what they say, home sweet home.

-I don't know.

[Mario] You know, it's crazy
because anything I look at,

it brings back some type of memory,
you know that?

I can just look at anything.

It just brings back memories.

Everything's the same.

Remember the dryer right here?

-You used to shove me in there?

It was nuts, man. It was crazy, you know?

I remember when they put...
[speaking Spanish]

In the corner, they put a picture of me...

What, was it flags and all that?

I guess to pay respect.

And I remember when Aixaly,
she was a little girl.

I remember like it was yesterday.

And my mom told me that she asked her,

why do they have a picture of my brother,

if he didn't die, you know?

So yeah, and they took it off.

I forgot who it was. They took it off.

Well, my grandma was sitting right here.

And then, I come out, and then...
Because every Friday,

my dad would come pick me up,
we'd go to the movies.

And then he would come downstairs
and pick me up to bring me up.

But he was like, it's all right.
Go upstairs or whatever.

I'm here with my friends.

So I go to sleep.
My grandma sitting right here.

[Mario] My dad called me that
night to go pick her up.

[Roy Dominguez] You weren't
by yourself, right?

You were with somebody?

[Mario] I was with my friends.

And she had a pair of...
[voice breaking] Rollerblades.

[crying] And my dad...

It was hard, man.

You got me.

I'm not strong like you.

My dad called me to help
her to pick up her blades.

And I was having a couple drinks.

And you know, I have so
much respect for my dad.

[choking up] I didn't want him
to see me buzzed, you know?

I forgot what I told him, you know?

That I wasn't around and this and that.

But I was on 49th Street,
posted, no bullshitting

and everything happened, you know?

And ever since then, it's just been life.

[Roy Dominguez] Like I say,
within a blink of an eye.

Yeah, life is a test, like Roy says.

He was always told me that.

"Mario, life is a test. Life is a test."

He'll say these little things
and it would motivate me

and it would keep me focused, you know?

That's what happened, you know?

I don't know what would have happened,

but we could sit down and think,
well, what if I would have

came and do this and do that...

Would have been different.

But whatever's gonna happen
is meant to be already.

I know that, you know?

Tell me about it.

[Mario] Yeah, man. It's hard.

This is where I came from, you know?
This is where I'm from.

This is me.

But it's just hard, you know?

But it's cool.

And my mom, too, though...

Seeing my mom in the kitchen,

brings back memories of me as a kid,
you know?

So I get a little emotional,
so it's all right, though.

I don't care.

They say sometimes
the best medicine is crying.

So I just let them
escape my eyes, you know?

It's cool. It's a'ight.

That's what happened.
This is the spot where I got shot.

[Mario] This is where it counts.

With a bad game here,

I don't know about my teammates,
but I'm going to speak for a lot of them.

our shoulders` right now.

If we don't win,
