of a Mack truck.

His name is Gator.

I'm meeting him over at my
house to go over the deal.

This is like a swamp
cooler ventilation system.

really hot outside, and
the breeze just blows

right through your shirt
and cools you down.

Gator is a cool guy from
Texas who likes hot rods.

They come from a
background of a little

bit of race cars.

You know, he's just
a good old dude.

Steve's an artist, and I'm
excited just to see what he,

what he's gonna do.

So let's talk
about this truck.

This truck's been in my family
for four generations,

so uh, you know,

we use to pull houses with it,
and my dad,

my dad used to drive it.

And my grandfather,
my great-grandfather.

Gator's truck is
a 1938 E-series.

There's only 78,000
of these ever made,

so they're kind of rare.

They were used in the second
world war for transportation.

This is his
great-grandpa's truck.

I mean, holy crap.

Who still has those
laying around?

I've never driven it.

You know, it's always
been parked in the back.

When I was a kid, I
used to play on it.

That's cool.

I, and you know what?

That, that helps me get
inspired on the build,

because, you know, while
I'm building this thing,

I'm gonna be in there
building it with your

great-grandpa
and your grandpa.

That's what's so fun about
building these cars for

different people is you
get inspired by

their lives and what
they're doing.

Like, what kind
of details?

I mean, I know we
talked about

a little bit of
gator stuff.

Since I'm into big
trucks, I like diesels.

And um, I like
his uh diesel rod.

That's what made
me, you know, wanna,

wanna get into a rat rod and
that's what made me find Steve.

I build the diesel
rod in 2008.

The D-rod is the
mascot of the shop.

This was kind of like
what put me on the map.

Was that car.

You know, look, my name's
Gator, so I want some,

you know, gator
stuff in there.

Um, you know, I want
like a twin turbot.

Other than that,
I'm not,

I'm not too picky, you know?

Let you do your thing.

The gator thing,
um, you know,

I've never done
nothing like that.

But, I mean, that's
something that I,

I love the challenge.

With the diesel engine,
that's kind of my forte.

I like to, I like torque.

I like lots of torque,
so I'm with you on that.

You can't go
wrong with torque.

I used to race cars.

Um, I just like,
I like more power,

and I've always had more
power than you need.

So what kind of shape is
the truck in like right now?

It's in decent shape.

It's not too bad.

The drive train,

everything that goes along

with that build is

This is the way that you
bolt together a Cummins

motor to a turbot 400.

Dan and I are starting to put
the tranny to the motor.

We ran into a little bit
of a bump in the road.

I wonder if they're making
these plate thicker...

- The tranny, the
adapter, we have a,

we have a clearance issue.

I've run into this
problem before, but

- it's probably,
okay, not bad.

Uh, I have too much
clearance between the

torque converter
and the fly wheel,

so we're trying to
figure out what changed

- whether our fly
wheel changed.

God, I have no idea.

We put a couple of these
together, me and Dan,

and every time, for some
reason, on the adaptor,

I had to use a spacer.

I wonder if the air's
was, letting go on the

converter wasn't going in
your shaft real smooth.

I know, dude.

I fought that for a day.

So I remember that
it was a pain.

Back in we go.

You know, every
time I've done them,

I've always used a little
spacer plate in between

the tranny and
the adapter plate.

I don't know what the frig,
but that's perfect.

We had already
made a spacer,

and now we don't need it.

We'll be driving
it down the road,

'Cause the tranny's all
strung out all over the
