(intense music)
- Onboard tonight's fasten your seatbelt.
(bell dings)
A passenger is going to get tased, but it may not work.
- Get the (beep) out of here.
And someone's been flying a bit too close to the jet stream.
- [captain] we just passed a guy on a jet pack.
- [robert] then, this guy doesn't have a ticket
So he's winging it.
- [passenger 1] there he goes! - [passenger 2] what happened?
- [robert] and the consequences of his rampage
Led to this.
(moaning)
- [robert] modern air travel.
Now, more than ever before,
People are acting up and acting out while traveling.
- [woman] if there's not flight just say there's no flight!
- [robert] it's a melting pot of stress and anxiety.
- [woman] I would like the manager of the airport here.
- [robert] whether it's strangeness in the air
Or strangers on the ground,
This jet stream of raw emotion is all caught on camera.
- [captain] enough, you do notput your hands
On my flight attendant.
- I'm robert hayes.
I played the reluctant pilot of a doomed flight
In the classic film, airplane.
But in real life air travel is just as hairy.
(screaming)
So buckle up.
We're about to take off.
(jet engine whirrs)
- The faa has reported that the cases of unruly passengers
Onboard airplanes have been steadily rising.
The most recent report listed an unprecedented number,
More than 1,300 incidents
And authorities have begun levying tens
Of thousands of dollars in fines to passengers
Who create trouble.
Here are a couple of notable incidents of the kind
Of bad behavior that airlines have been reporting.
Upon landing in san diego,
A passenger and a flight attendant get
Into a serious altercation over a seatbelt.
(yelling)
- [male passenger] hey, hey!
- [female passenger] hey!
- [male passenger] hey! (passengers yelling)
- [robert] the passenger's fists connect firmly
With the flight attendant's face.
(passenger yelling)
- [passenger] she came at her first.
She came at her first.
- [robert] passengers say the woman became angry
When told she had to put her mask on,
Fasten her seatbelt and put up her tray table
During taxing,
A common faa requirement.
- [passenger] she came at her first.
- [robert] the flight attendant's face
Was gruesomely battered and bloodied.
Reportedly, two of her teeth were knocked out.
- [passenger] a child too.
- [robert] police remove the assailant from the airplane.
The flight attendant would be wheeled off the plane
By paramedics and taken to a hospital where she was treated
And recovered from her injuries.
And in another case,
In the plague of unruly passengers...
- [robert] a fully boarded miami to chicago flight remains
At the gate because a heated altercation
Between passengers broke out inside the cabin.
- [robert] witnesses say a man was insulting another man
And woman and then put his hands on the woman.
Law enforcement has identified the main offender.
- What? What is the?
No.
- [robert] and the entire airplane is getting angry.
(yelling) - [female passenger] come on!
Get him out!
- [passengers] get him out! Get him out!
Get him out! Get him out!
Get him out! Get him out!
- Listen, what is the reason?
(yelling)
- [robert] when they can't physically subdue him,
The officers try a different tactic.
- [woman] I don't want to get hit because you wont stand up!
- Do not fight. Do not fight, do you understand that?
- No, no, you listen!
- Do you understand that?
- I'm asking you right now
Because you have to answer.
- What are you, no, tase me?
- You will get, you will get, no.
(passengers clap)
- [officer] watch out. Watch out.
Johnson, watch out.
- [female passenger] watch out johnson!
- Get the (beep) out of here!
-[woman] oh my god!
(yelling) (taser clicking)
- [robert] reports say the officer tased
The belligerent passenger 10 times for 50 seconds.
Yet he seemed unaffected by the tens of thousands of volts.
(dramatic music)
- [robert] other passengers re-boarded the plane
After a one hour delay.
The man was arrested.
He was later found not guilty of assault
And other charges were dropped.
(crowd cheering)
- [passenger 1] bye!
- [passenger 2] you deserve it!
(jet engine whirrs)
(upbeat music)
When you're on board and settling in for your flight,
There are some things you don't want to see.
And this is one of them.
It's mccarran international airport in las vegas,
Where a man breached a security fence
And is spotted wandering the runway.
And then the unimaginable happened.
He's now on the wing of an alaskan airline plane.
- [passenger 1] what is going on? (gasps)
(intense music)
Did he open the door? How'd he get up there?
- [passenger 2] he came up from down on the ground.
- [passenger 1] he got up there from the ground?
[passenger 1] he was running around out there.
- [robert] he rants at the astonished passengers
Who can hardly hear him.
But still, it's a chilling sight.
I thought like...
- [paassenger 1] he's foaming at the mouth.
Oh yeah. What is he doing?
- [robert] passenger erin evans had a front row seat.
- He was acting erratic and looking straight at us
In through the window and like, talking to us
But we couldn't hear what he saying.
- [flight attendant] please remain seated in your seats.
The air marshals are onboard the flight
So we ask you to please remain in your seats at this time.
- [robert] the pilot kills the engines.
Law enforcement arrives in a hurry.
- [erin] there are lots of cops.
So we're just going to watch and see what happens.
- [robert] it's unclear why the man
Would try this dangerous stunt.
- [man] tryng to get him off the wing.
- [passenger] where?
- [erin] right there.
- [passenger] oh crap.
Five or six police officers came in through the front door
Of the plane at that point.
Storm down the aisle and then went out the emergency exit.
You could tell by looking at it,
That was not going to end well.
- [passenger] where does he? It's amazing.
Oh (beep).
There he goes!
(yelling)
- [robert] the man takes a 20 foot fall
To the concrete tarmac,
Where first responders rushed to his assistance.
- [male passenger] yup. - [female passenger] yeah.
He wasn't coming down and he was going to jump.
He's still conscious.
He just has a little cut on the, on his cheek.
- [robert] he's taken to the hospital
And treated for surprisingly minor injuries.
- [erin] never had anything like that happen
On a plane before.
I mean, she said
She'd been an attendant for 30 years
And has never seen anything like this.
- [robert] he was arrested and booked into clark county jail
And was later found guilty of trespassing.
(jet engine whirrs)
- [robert] traveling with a baby and a stroller.
That's a two headed nightmare for a parent.
Sometimes airline crews are helpful
And sometimes there are issues.
A flight from san francisco to dallas has just boarded
And a mom cries hysterically with baby in her arms.
- [robert] the woman was trying to pack away her stroller
When it was violently yanked from her by a flight attendant,
Striking her in the process.
- [robert] one passenger saw what happened and has her back.
- [robert] when the offending flight attendant re-boards
The plane to talk to the captain, he's called out.
You stay out of this!
(indistinct)
- [robert] that happened.
The footage went viral.
National news picked it up and american quickly apologized
To the mom
And the flight attendant was suspended.
- Back in the day,
The thought of a man flying through the air was akin
To something out of the jetsons.
And if you're too young to recognize that reference
Google is at your fingertips.
In late summer 2020, sightings of a man wearing a jet pack
Were making headlines across la.
- Both the fbi and the faa started an investigation
Into this airspace intruder.
- [robert] multiple airlines reported the incident.
- [robert] flying in illegal airspace,
The jet pack is a new found danger,
Close to one of the busiest airports in america.
- [robert] flying through the air at roughly 3000 feet,
This close encounter is less than seven miles from lax.
- [robert] jet packs can only fly about 10 minutes,
But reportedly have reached altitudes of up to 6,000 feet.
Although the flier remains a mystery,
Jet packs are an emerging technology
And continue to flourish around the world.
The question remains, will the world ever meet
This real life ironman?
(intense music)
- If there's a screaming baby aboard your plane,
You got to give them a break if they're new to the world.
Some infants are literally air born.
- [woman] baby has been delivered on our flight
From fort lauderdale.
- [robert] a passenger traveling from fort lauderdale
To dallas with her two pre-teen daughters suddenly
Went into labor at 36 weeks with her third child.
- [woman] oh my goodness!
Look! Aw!
- [robert] according to medical professionals,
Commercial air travel before week 36 of pregnancy
Is considered safe.
The 35-year-old mother reported her contractions
Began 10 to 15 minutes after takeoff.
By a lucky coincidence,
A pediatrician and a nurse were on the flight
To assist with the delivery right there at her seat,
As the plane was diverted to new orleans.
- [robert] an excited passenger captures
And narrates baby's first moments.
- [doctor] so this is very special.
Do you have a name for him?
- [mother] christophe?
- [women] christophe!
- [robert] baby christophe surprised mom
And his two older sisters by making
His arrival four weeks before his due date.
The seven pound baby will be racking up
Those flight miles soon enough.
Spirit airlines gifted the newborn with free flights
For the next 21 years.
- [woman] born on an airplane.
Wow.
- [robert] across the globe,
Another miracle is born in the sky.
About six hours into a 19 hour flight from taiwan
To los angeles, a china airways flight crew sprang
Into action when a passenger started labor.
(passengers clapping)
- [robert] the taiwanese woman identified only
As sian, told the crew she was 32 weeks pregnant
When the little one began her entry over the pacific ocean.
(speaking chinese)
- [robert] the plane quickly diverted to alaska.
Another bit of luck, dr. Angelica zen was coming home
From her honeymoon and worked with flight attendants
Delivering the baby.
The baby girl arrived 30 minutes before the plane landed
In anchorage.
Sian and baby were brought immediately to the hospital
For postpartum care, without any health complications.
(passengers clapping)
- How do you maintain order
When a passenger is uncontrollable at 37,000 feet?
You do whatever's necessary as this next clip shows.
A flight from reykjavik to new york became
An airborne nightmare
When one drunk passenger got way out of control
In mid-flight.
The end result is seen in this cell phone video.
The crew and other passengers restrained the man in his seat
With zip ties and duct tape.
- (beep) just got real.
(muffled yelling)
- [robert] after downing a bottle of duty-free booze
He brought aboard,
He began cursing and spitting at other passengers,
Even hitting them.
The man reportedly attempted to choke the person next
To him too screaming, "the plane is going to crash."
Iceland air said they keep duct tape and zip ties
On board all their flights,
Precisely for incidents such as this.
In the us, tough cuff restraints are standard.
(muffled yelling)
After the drunk raging man is secured,
Flight attendants monitor his safety throughout the flight.
- [robert] upon arrival in new york,
He's met by authorities and taken to a hospital
For evaluation.
The airline did not press charges.
(jet engine whirrs)
(intense music)
- [robert] trying to navigate through an airport
Can get a little confusing sometimes.
The multiple terminals, gates and security checks
Can be overwhelming.
For some travelers,
Their confusion can go to the next level.
In 2019 surveillance footage from dagestan airport in russia
Shows a reportedly first time flyer
Approaching a security checkpoint.
Apparently, he's unsure how the screening process works.
So the most logical thing to do is, yup,
The confused traveler climbs inside the baggage scanner
With his bag.
The security agent points out his newbie mistake.
At least he got a good laugh out of it.
A long-awaited well-planned family vacation can be one
Of the most exciting moments imaginable,
Especially for a young child.
- [mother] we've been lying to you.
You need to open up those bags.
- [robert] at England's gatwick airport,
A mom and dad are about to give their daughters
The ultimate surprise trip: Disney world in florida.
But mum and dad are in for a surprise of their own.
The girl's reaction is not what they expected.
- [robert] the triangle is the bermuda triangle.
The family had just seen a documentary
About the notorious area of the atlantic.
- [mother] we're going to florida.
(laughing)
- [robert] the overjoyed older daughter
Tries to talk sense into her sister.
- [mother] no! You're going to florida.
Where you've always wanted to go.
- Oh!
- [mother] yes!
- That's all for this episode.
But before our departure,
It's time for the short flight of the week.
With a new leash on life,
Lou sky barker here is living his best life,
Chilling in the passenger seat of this private plane
While his master takes it for a spin.
Just don't jump out until you're barked in the hanger.
Who's a good boy?
(groovy music)
(jet engine whirrs)
(bell dings)
