The Ideal City

This is a work of fiction

Ep14

Did you play mahjong again last night?

What mahjong?

I couldn't sleep all night.

Why?

I was restless.

Should you

do as he said and just

join the group?

I'm not afraid if he is against me.

I'm afraid if he is against you.

I've been thinking about

the meeting yesterday and what

he said to you

for a very long time.

What if he says

that you took the money

and initiates an investigation?

Even if he can't find anything,

he can send you to prison for a year or a half

and your life will be destroyed.

I don't think he will do that.

You know nothing about Zhao Xiaokun.

Everything you see about him is a successful man

with a dignified life.

But I've seen what he is capable of.

We used to have a project

with an agreement on the cost of idleness

in the final account with the subcontractor.

That was such a hot summer.

There's no way they could

carry on working at noon.

The subcontractor brought the contract to him

and wanted to negotiate the cost of idleness.

It's justifiable, right?

But he took the contract

and tore it.

He asked them one question.

Do you know what it was?

What?

Where's your contract?

I'm not afraid if he is against me.

If he targets me,

I know most clearly everything he did because

I've been working for him

for such a long time.

If he wants to bring me down,

he needs to have second thoughts.

I'm afraid that he'll bring you down.

Zhao Xiankun is able

to see the stakes

at first sight.

When he gives me a hard time, he is against you.

When he gives you a hard time, he is against TK Construction.

So, there's no use giving me a hard time.

He just wants me to join the group

and help him get more income.

I fear that he'll use you as a warning to others.

The president isn't

narrow-minded like that.

It has nothing to do with his mind.

So, join the group for now.

After your relationship

with Yao is stable,

Zhao Xiankun won't be able

to do anything to you.

Right.

How's the relationship between

the two of you going?

I'm not gossiping about your privacy.

As your uncle, I care about you.

We've only met not long ago.

What do you mean by that?

It's been two months.

Your aunt is a difficult woman, right?

I nailed her three days after knowing her.

To this day,

she still treats me whole-heartedly.

Don't laugh. It's true.

Yao is such

a nice girl.

She's tender, kind and pretty.

She's also well-educated.

She is the politest girl

I've ever seen.

Even with her family background,

she's not wilful at all.

I don't know what's in your mind.

I'm too old.

Let me tell you,

If it was 20 years ago,

I could've nailed her

in just one week.

I'll even make her devoted. Don't laugh.

You always throw my words to the wind.

Where are you, Donlin?

I'm at home. What's wrong?

It's Friday.

Don't you need to work?

Director Chen said

that we worked overtime too much

in international-leading projects

a while ago.

It's a day off today.

A day off?

Why didn't I know?

Didn't Director Chen tell you?

It can't be.

I'm at the office now.

Then hurry back and get some rest.

It's a rare holiday.

Just watch movies and eat nice food.

Wouldn't that be nice?

What did you say to

the headhunters?

I...

Have you met

all the candidates?

- I... - Have you?

Are the headhunters unreliable

or are you unreliable?

I...

I believe if you made

proper communications,

you wouldn't find me these useless craps.

They're totally unsuitable.

Look at these.

See for yourself.

When can you

be attentive?

Can you think?

Don't make me give so many instructions

on every task.

Alright. Get out.

What's wrong, my dear?

Did you get scolded again?

I'm used to it.

No matter what I do,

she always hates me.

It's about the approach you use.

What approach?

Watch me.

Maria.

Come in.

I'm here to report to you.

Your itinerary on Tuesday and Wednesday

is scheduled roughly like this.

On Tuesday, I especially

reserved two hours of free time for you

so that you can get some good rest

in the hotel.

You're very attentive.

Thanks.

Not bad.

You're very efficient. Work hard.

I learnt all of it from you.

Do you know how you

normally report to her?

How?

You're normally like this.

I don't think so.

Really?

Did she owe you money

or did you owe her money?

Do I have to behave like you?

It depends on you.

Anyways, it works on Maria.

M...

Maria.

The headhunter strongly recommends him.

He has rich experience

in offshore financing.

Mari...

Tell me. What about it?

Maria.

Helen isn't focusing on her work recently.

Do you know?

She's been interviewing

candidates for the cost manager recently.

I was wondering.

I couldn't remember which company

asked for a candidate.

After asking around, I found out

that TC Construction is in urgent need

of a cost manager after promoting Su Xiao.

But they haven't started the procedure yet.

Helen pulled strings.

What else?

She says that you're always against her.

I see.

Helen's style

of work is very problematic.

Keep a close eye on her.

Tell me

if anything happens.

Is that it?

Nothing else.

Helen, what's wrong with your ankle?

I sprained it.

I have a bottle of Loong Foo Oil from Singapore.

I bought it last time I was there.

Rub it on the ankle

and you'll be fine.

I'm okay, Liu.

Don't worry about it.

Here. You're welcome.

How can you forget such a small thing?

You're daydreaming every day.

Why aren't you apologizing to Manager Su?

Well... Su Xiao.

Wait.

What did you call her?

You should call her Manager Su.

Sorry, Manager Su.

On Friday, I forgot

to tell you to take a day off.

It's my fault.

Don't be angry.

It's okay.

Sorry, Su Xiao.

That was a big misunderstanding.

Later on, I'll host an induction ceremony

for you.

It's okay, Director Chen.

We've known each other so well.

There's no need to introduce me.

Alright.

Sit down.

Let's do

a small ceremony then.

Let's officially welcome Su Xiao,

who becomes the manager of the business contract department.

Also, let's congratulate Yu Can

on becoming the cost manager.

Thank you, Director Chen.

Good job, bro.

What's wrong, Manager Su?

Director Chen,

the audit team from the group is here.

Mr. Wang is looking for you.

I'll go out now.

Let's carry on with the meeting later on.

Su Xiao, what's wrong with Director Chen?

Why is he so angry?

He's not seriously angry.

He is setting the rules.

What rules?

You chief housekeeper.

Are you cultivating?

Cultivating?

I was about to slack off

when I was forced to come back for you.

You can slack off

whenever you want at my place.

I won't mind.

You may not mind,

but the president does.

We used to be like a family.

Can we be gentle and kind?

Do we have to disown each other?

That hurts so much.

Don't say it like that.

I can really understand him.

Who doesn't want to make this company

stronger and bigger?

Right?

In the past six months,

the revenue figures of TC Construction

look very good.

If you go on like this,

consider that I'm

clearing all obstacles

and potential troubles for you.

Don't put yourself so low.

I'm not worthy.

You're the designated inspector.

I should pay respect to you.

Don't do that.

You just need to

cooperate with me.

Cooperate?

When did I ever not do that?

It's just that I'm not good at managing.

I can't pass the test

if you pick on me.

Managing ability isn't

a big problem.

It's not a matter of principle

or direction.

We can fix it.

Although Xu Feng is no longer the leader of the team,

the president gave instructions

that we need to follow his audit plans.

Mr. Xu.

Mr. Wang.

Sit over here, Chen.

Let's properly chat

with Mr. Xu about

the plan of the audit.

Come here.

I plan

to use the defect

of this crooked wall

as an element in our design.

As a whole,

these walls can

be painted with of lines,

creating

a feeling of distorted space.

Do you mean

an effect

like this?

Yes, that's the effect.

But

I think it's a bit too complicated now.

It may make people feel dizzy.

Just a minute.

No matter what, I think

the painting needs to

bring out the photographer's work.

Look.

What I'm thinking about

is something more dreamlike.

For example, maybe we can

use a white background and black lines

to bring out his work.

Then...

Look.

If the work is positioned here,

I hope the drawings around it

are three-dimensional.

OK.

In that case, we can

bring out the work.

Then it's won't just stay on one plane

but become more lively.

Then, you can...

It depends on the elements you use.

But you need to use some here.

You can repeat

all kinds of elements.

I'm sorry.

I have an appointment tonight.

I'll buy you dinner another time.

It's okay.

I hope that

helping me

doesn't affect your work.

Of course not.

A lot of mushrooms from Yunnan province

were sent to my place not long ago.

It's just me and my dad at home.

We can't finish eating them.

These days,

bring your uncle to my place.

Alright.

I mean it.

I mean it, too.

OK.

Because my dad

says that I'm overly independent,

I want to change myself.

You can

bring your girlfriend, too.

I can't let my uncle

know that I have a girlfriend.

Is it because she's pretty?

You can also bring her alone.

I can be your adviser.

You're welcome anytime.

I don't mean that.

I'm just saying

that not many people come to visit.

When they do, it's for business.

So,

I want the atmosphere to be more lively.

Would you mind that?

Also,

I think you're very nice.

My dad will surely welcome

my guest visiting our place.

But I'm not

requiring you to do that.

Come on.

You make me feel

that I said something wrong.

No.

You didn't say anything wrong.

It's just that I'm

normally overwhelmed in my world,

not considering others' feelings.

You've helped me a lot.

I want to thank you.

Then pay for the petrol.

OK.

Come in.

Su Xiao.

Have a seat.

What's wrong?

We're not strangers.

Director Chen,

you should've told me in advance

before promoting Yu Can

to the cost manager, right?

Is that it?

Yes, I forgot about it.

I've always doubled in brass

as the manager of the business contract department.

I'm used to it

and didn't think twice.

I will surely ask for your opinion in the future.

I think Yu Can

isn't the right person for this position.

Not the right person?

Why?

I think he is the perfect person.

If you think he is,

you must have a reason.

Maybe I haven't

known him enough.

There's no rush. Take your time.

Many project managers even said

that you're not the right person

for the manager of the business department.

I told them the same thing.

I said that they don't know Su Xiao.

Thanks, Director Chen.

I'll go back to work.

OK. Work hard.

Don't you dare!

Lu.

Just in time.

Manager Su.

Well...

Do you have the report on

the monthly operations of the art museum?

Yes.

I just reported it to Director Chen.

According to the workflow,

you need to report to me first.

Sorry, I'm used to it.

Alright, I'll take care of it next time.

Donglin.

The art museum

is withdrawing too much from the fund this month.

Send it back

and tell them to make a new one.

But Mr. Dong told Director Chen

about it.

Director Chen agreed.

Look.

I...

Director Chen,

you recruited me into TC Construction.

and trained me to be the manager of

the business contract department step by step.

I haven't done this job for long.

I was unfamiliar with business

and added much trouble to your work.

You're always devoted to teaching me.

I'm really grateful to you.

I trained you in person.

Of course, I trust you

and I support you, right?

I feel so ashamed

when you say it like that.

In this period,

you still needed to take care

of much substantive work.

It's okay.

Everyone needs time.

But I'm familiar with the workflow

of the department now.

I have made a new summary

of the previous workflow.

Please take a look.

Is there anything else I should add?

It's good. Nothing else.

Then let's follow

the new workflow,

shall we?

It's not a big deal.

It's your decision.

Thank you for your support, Director Chen.

I'll return to work.

OK.

This is the new workflow.

I've improved it

from the previous one.

Take a look.

If there's anything you don't understand

or you don't agree,

you can tell me now.

If not,

I hope that you'll

strictly follow

the new workflow

and be more efficient.

Read it carefully.

Manager Su has been working hard.

Don't let her down.

Anything else?

No.

Remember to finds more subjects

for a meeting in the future.

Don't just call a meeting

because of trivia.

It's too inefficient.

You're dismissed.

Should we really follow this procedure?

Are you stupid?

Remember.

The business contract department

only has one boss.

Peter.

It's still about the president's assistant.

Please find

more candidates for me.

It can't be.

I...

It's alright. I see.

Just come here when you finish.

That's it for now.

The kid will report to me.

I'll wait for you. Bye-bye.

Come in.

What's wrong?

Nothing.

Maria, I'd like to ask

if you've

hired an assistant for the president?

Yeah.

Why didn't I know about this?

I forgot to tell you.

So? What's the problem?

Nothing. It's great.

Bei,

how long have you been waiting?

Not long.

I didn't play much before you came here.

Why are you picking me up all of a sudden?

About that.

A client needed some testing today

and my company sent me here.

It's close to your workplace.

So I came to pick you up from work.

Thank god you're here.

I've been depressed for a whole day.

What's wrong? Did you get scolded again?

It's good to get scolded.

At least that means you still exist.

I just realized today that I've been

in the company for four years

but I'm still a nobody.

It's like I don't exist.

Tell me. What's wrong?

I am the one in charge of recruiting.

I still have to hear the news that

the president's assistant is recruited

from a headhunter.

Then I went to ask Maria.

Maria

just said that she

forgot to tell me.

Isn't it hilarious?

Am I really such a nobody?

Is it so easy to forget me?

But it's not a big deal.

Don't overthink.

Is it not big enough?

I thought about it. I think

Maria just can't

notice me at all.

No matter how hard I work, she doesn't notice me.

Should I change my job?

Don't do that.

Why do you want to do that?

It doesn't matter to

be a nobody.

When you don't have good chances,

you also don't

have to take the blame.

Right?

Look at me.

I'm too important

at the moment.

I'd rather be a nobody.

The client

appointed me today.

There're so many staff

doing nothing in the company.

Isn't it nice to drink tea and gossip?

I'm outside

suffering from cold and hunger.

For real.

You're a woman.

Just have a stable job.

Don't have any career pursuits.

Two female programmers in my company

are both over 30 years old now.

They work overtime more than men

and always talk about career pursuit.

They're still single.

I'm not talking about

career pursuits.

I just feel that I've

been in the company for four years.

I can't just live with no promotion, right?

There're benefits in not getting promoted.

There'll be more trouble if you're promoted.

If we have a child one day,

who will take care of it if you're busy all day?

Yeah.

I think your words make sense.

Of course, they make sense.

A woman needs a job and that's it.

We men are responsible for earning money

and providing for the family.

What's wrong?

Don't take the underground.

Let's take the bus. It's cheaper.

Lilin,

it's been years since you

wore this chain.

Before, if you wear a gold chain and go out,

people would say

that you're so rich.

It's different nowadays.

If you wear a gold chain now,

you're dowdy.

When you have time,

talk to me more.

Sit.

You have no idea

how much I wanted to.

But you're busy.

I tried three days before arranging

today's meeting

with Ms. Tang.

Right, Ms. Tang?

The other day, you told Xia Ming

about this gold chain.

I took it out from the safe deposit box

once I went back.

It's 24K gold

and strong.

The color won't fade however much you wear it.

It was our

first big project.

Yeah.

I also think of it

as my heritage.

I'm glad you think like that.

Don't forget

to wear it from time to time.

If someone says you're dowdy,

they know nothing.

You're right.

I've told Yongbo

to return the money.

Thank you for giving us a way out.

I thought about it after I went back home.

Over the years,

I have been a bit arrogant indeed.

You not only forgive me

but also promote Xia Ming.

I'm truly grateful to you, president.

I totally

trust you

with my nephew.

Xia Ming is a talent.

Don't worry. I will train him well.

Then,

thank you, president.

Come on.

I'll go now and leave you to it.

It's still early.

Let's find a chance

to have a proper chat next time.

OK.

Bye.

President, Xia Ming is here.

He doesn't have an appointment. Do you want to meet him?

Let's do it like this. Tang,

show Manager Huang out

from Mr. Xu's office first

and tell Xia Ming to come in.

OK.

Tang.

This way, Director Xia.

President.

I guess you've decided.

I will have to

let you down, president.

Why?

My father is a professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature.

My mother is a surgeon.

Nobody understood

why I chose the Department of Civil Engineering

in university.

It's because of my uncle.

When I was a kid, my parents

were busy at work.

No one stayed

with me except my uncle.

We went to the park, to the children's hall

and attended parent's meetings.

I grew up with my uncle.

Later on, when I was in middle school...

Thanks.

He suddenly became very busy.

Every time he got off work

from the construction site,

he was tired and his face was covered in mud.

But whenever he

mentioned Yinghai Group,

he always had high morale.

He said

that his work is really enjoyable

and he can change the world with brick and concrete.

That's when I started

to be interested in architecture.

Also, I want to help him

and make him less tired.

President,

My uncle has devoted everything

to TK Construction.

I believe that

you understand this.

I do.

That's why

I allowed him much freedom

and tolerated his mistakes.

After all, his mistakes are not small.

Yes.

Thank you for being forgiving.

TK Construction is always part of the group.

TK Construction

is such a small platform.

You can't shine in it.

Listen to me

and join the group.

True talent

can create

a platform of his own.

It's like what you did.

No one

gave you the platform.

I agree with it.

How do you plan

to create a platform?

I'm working on a big project.

All Stars.

You're well-informed, president.

It's a good project.

the EPC company is working on it.

The group has decided to fully support

the EPC company.

Do you think the resource you have

can match

that of the EPC company?

Of course, no.

But I can use this.

Good.

If you're

the successful bidder of the All Stars Project,

I'll forget about the audit.

Otherwise,

you still need to join the group.

Thank you, president.

Uncle.

Why are you here?

I even put on the gold chain.

Why did you come here?

You shouldn't have come.

It's also unnecessary

to humble yourself in front of him.

Of course, I have to come.

If I didn't humble myself

and apologize,

we can never solve it, right?

I've agreed with him on everything.

You should join the group.

But you're here now.

It's endless.

If I wanted to become

a senior in a company,

I wouldn't have joined TK Construction.

I just don't want to see

that your fate

is controlled by others.

Don't worry.

When I win the bidding on the All Stars Project,

we will have the leverage

to negotiate with him.

How sure you are

to win the bidding?

Zero percent.

You brat.

You piss me so much.

Don't be angry. Take it easy.

Do you know

how high my blood pressure is?

What did you find?

Look.

The quantities don't match.

Right?

True.

I'll ask Chen Siming about it now.

Let's ask Mr. Xu first.

Instructions?

Why do we need instructions?

We need to know

if we should carry on.

Of course.

Mr. Xu told us

to investigate strictly.

Don't just listen to what he says.

You need to see what he does.

When Xu Feng was in the team,

he worked at TK Construction every day.

How many times did Mr. Xu visit?

Also,

is there any subsidiary

that doesn't play with numbers?

Mr. Xu isn't new here.

Do you think he doesn't know?

of the internal audit team.

Why all he found out

was just some trivia?

Why?

I don't know the exact reason.

Maybe he's afraid of crossing someone.

Think about it.

When you make it difficult for others,

they will surely do the same to you, right?

Xu Feng is an example

in real life.

He used to be the president's assistant.

Now he is relocated to a real estate company

as a department manager.

What a pity, right?

Tell me,

what can we do about it?

Ask more and decide less.

Apart from this,

what else did you find?

I...

I have told you

about all the other problems.

It's about poor management

or trivia in the workflow.

But this one

is probably false subcontracting.

How sure are you?

It's just my speculation.

What do you

plan to do next?

I'm here

to ask for your instructions

on the next step.

False subcontracting is a big deal.

You have to be careful.

Never rely on your first impressions.

Yes.

Let's do it like this.

I have a meeting to attend later on.

We can't talk about it in detail.

Go back now

and figure it out.

Find a time

and report to me in detail.

Alright, Mr. Xu.

I'll return to work now.
