- Hey, Nathan, you seen this new color

they got in Hell?

- Yeah, I don't, I don't like it.

- Infra, ultra red.

It's like blood but neon and you can only see it

when you're remembering your life before.

It's very wild.

- I didn't know a color could be spicy.

- Yeah, well that's how they've been advertising it,

as infra ultra red "The color that makes you shit."

- You know, I hate the torture

but I gotta respect the craft.

- (laughs) You gotta respect the hustle, I'll tell you what.

(Nathan laughs) - Testing, test.

- Yeah? - One, two.

One, two. - Oh.

- Is this thing on?

- Yeah, it's always on. - Hello?

- Hey (noise of frustration). - Hello?

- Ah. - Can you hear me?

- Yes, Managar. - You're coming through.

- Oh, thank God, listen, sorry about the infra ultra red,

you know, you're part of the test market.

Wait till you get to emotionally upsetting blue.

- Adriel Tolentino says, "Can I get some lovely trees?"

- Lovely trees. - Lovely trees.

Now that's a title right there.

- Yeah.

- A little redundant, I don't know what trees aren't lovely.

- That's fair, yeah. - That's a good point.

- It's been a while since I've seen a tree.

- Mmhm. - And I remember them

being lovely.

- I'm gonna try and remember what a tree is.

Nathan, do you want me to get started, is that OK?

- Yeah, please. - [Nicholas] Sure.

- Alright, wonderful.

Now when I hear the phrase lovely tree,

it does kinda make me think of a children's book.

- [Nathan] Mmhm.

- [Caldwell] Like Giving Tree adjacent, maybe,

like this is the Lovely Tree.

- [Nathan] Oh yeah.

- [Caldwell] If we're trying to instill a parable

or something on the children,

it's like a tree that just really knows how great it is.

- [Nathan] Yeah.

- [Caldwell] So I think I want to start with that.

- [Nathan] I love this low angle we're starting with too.

I think, is this like the perspective we have for the show,

like we're looking up at these lovely trees.

- [Caldwell] I think for this shot definitely,

'cause we do have kinda like a little kid here.

- [Nathan] Oh OK.

- [Caldwell] Who's like come to seek the council

of the lovely tree, perhaps.

- [Nathan] Mmhm. - [Caldwell] If y'all

have suggestions for what I should do

on this face, please let me know.

- I'm guessing if this tree calls itself a lovely tree--

- Mmhm. - Maybe it's hiding something.

- Whoa. - Oh.

- Maybe it's not so lovely.

- A tree with a secret.

(Caldwell laughs)

- [Caldwell] Would the secret be bees?

- [Nathan] (laughs) Bees in trees.

- [Caldwell] (laughs) Lovely trees

but stinky, terrible bees

(Nathan laughs) is maybe what we've got here.

So I think that there could just be a bunch

of bees coming out of the tree's mouth.

- [Nathan] OK, so this tree's releasing--

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nathan] (laughs) their bees

onto the world, so it's not a secret anymore.

- [Nicholas] Or maybe you think it's bees.

- [Nathan] Oh? - [Nicholas] But it's actually

a bunch of bees on a squirrel.

- [Nathan] (laughs) Oh.

- Like maybe maybe like this cloud of bees comes out

but they're really just clinging to a squirrel,

helping it fly.

- Oh my god. - And this is

a bee-covered squirrel. (Caldwell laughs)

- [Caldwell] The bees are helping the squirrel

to realize the squirrel's dreams.

- [Managar] Caldwell, Nicholas suggested

that you draw a squirrel surrounded by bees

in a kind of nanosuit power armor.

(Caldwell laughs)

And you God damn better do as he says.

- [Caldwell] Well, I'm drawing,

I'm obviously drawing the tongue

that doubles as a diving board

that the squirrel is going to be jumping off of.

- [Nathan] (laughs) For the bee squirrel.

- [Caldwell] Exactly. (laughs)

- [Nathan] Oh my God.

- [Nicholas] Like I don't wanna see

any hair on the squirrel.

- [Nathan] No. - [Caldwell] Mmhm.

- [Nicholas] That's how tightly the bees

are clinging to-- - [Caldwell] (laughs)

It's an armor of bees.

(Nicholas laughs)

You've heard of a bee beard, this is a bee suit.

- [Nathan] Yeah. (laughs)

- [Caldwell] Not a beekeeper, a bee befriender.

(Nathan laughs) - [Nicholas] But the bees

are very sensitive to the movements--

- [Nathan] Mmhm. - [Caldwell] Mmhm.

- [Nicholas] Of the squirrel, very much like Ironman's suit.

(Nathan laughs) - [Caldwell] Exactly.

- [Nicholas] So the squirrel can change

direction in mid-flight.

- [Caldwell] Now is this squirrel screaming though?

Despite the fact that they wanted this?

- (laughs) It's screaming, "I wanted this."

(Caldwell laughs)

It's exactly what it's screaming.

- [Caldwell] This is a lovely tree, with some lovely bees.

- [Nicholas] You're probably hearing the buzz of the bees

as well though, so it's probably,

you know, (Nathan laughs)

whatever scream it has is sort of--

- [Nathan] Deafening.

- [Nicholas] Cacophanic. (Caldwell and Nathan laugh)

Alongside the buzzing.

- [Managar] You're really painting

a beautiful mise-en-scene here

(Nathan laughs) with the boy being like,

"Lovely Tree, Lovely Tree,

please may I have one of your apples?"

(Nathan laughs)

And then just like a loud humming begins

to bellow from inside him.

- [Caldwell] Oh maybe the child should be

raising their hands up in kind of like a begging gesture,

like "Give me one of them apples, please."

- (laughs) And the tree's like, "I've got something better."

- (laughs) "Oh better than apples?"

- (laughs) "Let me introduce you to the future

of crime fighting. (Caldwell laughs)

- [Nicholas] What is this squirrel's goal?

(Nathan and Caldwell laugh)

- [Caldwell] I don't know the squirrel's goal

but I do know it's name and it's name is Honeynuts.

- [Nathan] So Honeynuts, I think originally Honeynuts

just like befriended these bees--

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nathan] And wanted

to harness their power and now that it has harnessed

their power, it's realizing that this power comes

with responsibility.

- [Nicholas] Yeah, maybe it always wanted

to be a flying squirrel.

- [Caldwell] Yeah.

- [Nicholas] And couldn't achieve that,

maybe there was a bad accident on--

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nicholas] A powerline

or something and it got its wish

but with the wish came the price

of being absolutely horrific.

(Nathan laughs) - [Caldwell] Mmhm.

- [Nathan] The suggestion was for lovely trees plural.

- [Caldwell] Yeah. - [Nathan] Maybe

I could draw a second tree.

- [Caldwell] I'm done here, if y'all wanna add to it,

please by all means.

- Please, trees and bees.

- (laughs) Bees and thank you.

- (laughs) So I'm gonna draw my favorite tree.

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nathan] What I consider

to be a lovely tree.

- [Caldwell] Oh. - [Nathan] Maybe this breaks

sort of the forest motif we were going for

but I love a palm tree.

- [Caldwell] Sure, they're great, they got coconuts,

they're way too tall.

There's a lot of fun to be had with a palm tree.

- [Nicholas] I don't want to back peddle--

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nicholas] Too much here,

but I'm noticing a lack of loveliness.

- [Caldwell] Yeah, well I think that this tree is lovely

in its own way.

- Nah, I think I get what Nick's talking about,

he's talking like Poison Ivy from Batman,

just like big bazoombas covered in ivy leaves--

- OK. - [Managar] And like

kissy lips but also branches, right?

- [Nicholas] Yeah, similar, yeah, something like that.

- [Nathan] OK, we do want to gender these trees,

(Caldwell laughs) I think that that's important.

- [Caldwell] That's very smart.

- [Nathan] And I think just like a full person's face.

- [Caldwell] (laughs) Yeah.

So this is fully an enchanted garden.

- [Nathan] Yeah, I do like the sort of shouting,

like I think that this (Caldwell laughs)

this is how the trees talk.

This is Pam.

- [Caldwell] Pam Edow, yeah,

she's also got her tongue way out.

- Is something coming out of her mouth as well?

Every tree in this forest bestows a different gift?

- Well, that's why they call them trees is

because they do give you treats.

- (laughs) That is why

they call them trees, (Caldwell laughs)

it's true, yeah.

- [Caldwell] Nick, do you have any thoughts

on what could be just tumbling out

of this beautiful tree's mouth?

Just about to hit this boy on the head.

- [Nicholas] She could be emitting a liquid.

(Caldwell laughs)

- [Nathan] Oh, just a full, yeah.

- [Caldwell] Yeah, she could be doing that.

And I do think that maybe it is some sort of beverage

that's coming out of the mouth.

- [Nicholas] Or a syrup.

- [Caldwell] A syrup would make sense.

- [Nicholas] Sap is short for syrup.

- [Nathan] OK, so it's just coming out.

- [Caldwell] Oh, it's just spewing out.

- [Nathan] It's just spewing out, just sort of cascading--

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nathan] Out.

- [Caldwell] Are they battling?

- [Nathan] Oh.

- [Nicholas] If the syrup lands on the child,

you might have an opportunity for bees

to converge on that child, allowing him to sort of suit up

(Nathan laughs) because the bees

would converge on the syrupy sap.

- [Caldwell] And then the squirrel

would still be controlling the bees,

but the squirrel and the boy would kind of merge

and then you would have kind of like a squirrel-bee boy.

- [Nathan] I think the sap

should absolutely be going towards this boy.

- [Caldwell] Mmhm.

- [Nathan] What an absolute nightmare this is.

- [Nicholas] It's also very powerful.

(Nathan laughs) - [Caldwell] Yeah.

- [Nicholas] If this boy has some bullies

that are troubling him-- - [Caldwell] Mmhm.

- [Nicholas] He's now a tour-de-force of revenge.

- [Nathan] Trees are old as Hell,

so their way of thinking would be more complex.

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nathan] To a tree,

this makes sense, this plan is perfect.

- [Caldwell] Do you think the trees have chosen this boy

as their protector?

- [Nathan] As their champion.

- [Caldwell] Exactly.

- And maybe it's like the boy thinks the power is his,

but really, he's entered the pact with the trees.

- A treaty if you will.

- Mmhm. - Mmhm.

- [Nicholas] What are the goals of the trees?

- [Caldwell] I think trees are just in it

for self-preservation, honestly.

Maybe there is kind of an environmental bend

to this where they're empowering this boy

and he's gonna go take on Exxon Valdez.

- [Nathan] Yeah, I just drew a big flower

is what I'm realizing.

- [Caldwell] A little bit. - [Nathan] By putting a face

on a palm tree, I made a flower.

- [Caldwell] I think we got time for one more tree though.

And I also think that the boy needs one more gift (laughs).

- [Nathan] The boy has not received nearly enough gifts.

So the squirrel's coming to transfer his power--

- [Caldwell] Yeah. - [Nathan] To the boy.

- [Nicholas] Oh and then the squirrel is free after that?

- [Caldwell] I think the squirrel maybe becomes like his pet

or mentor afterwards, it's kind of like, you know,

you pass your powers onto the next generation.

- [Nicholas] Dread Pirate Roberts--

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nicholas] You pass

on the mantle.

- [Caldwell] Exactly. (Nathan laughs)

- [Managar] You've got like an Almight Midoria dynamic

going on here, not that I would ever know what

that was a reference to.

- [Nicholas] I barely understand it myself.

- I'm very pleased by these trees and bees.

Let's get our special guest in here.

- Yeah, let's do it.

- [Nicholas] I think I'll start off thinking

about what happens to this boy.

- [Caldwell] OK. - [Nicholas] Presumably,

the boy is awash with the goop.

(Nathan and Caldwell laugh)

- [Nathan] A boy awash in goop.

- [Caldwell] Ah, a classic tale.

- [Nathan] Does this boy have a name?

- Treater Treater.

- Treater Treater Traker?

- Treater Trunker. (laughs)

- Treater Trunker, good.

- [Nicholas] This is him opening his mouth a little bit.

- [Nathan] It's a little-- - [Nicholas] He's all

gooped up. (Nathan and Caldwell laugh)

- [Caldwell] My man's so gooped.

- [Nicholas] These bees come from all directions.

- [Caldwell] Oh. - [Nicholas] And he knows

the drill. (Nathan laughs)

Perhaps he's familiar with how bees

power up forest wanderers.

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nathan] (laughs) I love

this, this power up sequence, (Caldwell laughs)

it happens so slowly.

- [Nicholas] So these are bees all over him.

- [Nathan] Yeah. - [Caldwell] And I do like

that you can kind of see his skull

beneath the bee suit, like he's clearly

been gnawed on a little bit.

- [Nathan] The skin and the goop sort

of fuse together, I imagine.

- [Caldwell] Absolutely, he's lean and clean

and born anew.

- [Nathan] So unlike other superheros,

this boy can never return to his old life.

- [Caldwell] I don't think so,

I mean, he could try, but I think

that everyone would be very concerned about it.

- [Nicholas] I think the stingers are facing out.

- [Nathan] Yeah, oh. - [Caldwell] Oh,

so he's protected. - [Nathan] Armor.

- [Nicholas] Yeah. - [Nathan] He's got

just a fully painful armor - [Nicholas] Mm.

- [Nathan] To anyone who dares try and touch him.

- [Caldwell] What a gift.

- [Nicholas] Where's he going though?

- Where is he going?

Do you think that, is he like a Johnny Applebees,

(Nathan laughs) where he goes from (laughs)

from town to town.

- God damn it.

- Distributing low-cost dinner options for families.

(Caldwell laughs) - (laughs) Johnny Applebees,

fuck you, Cald.

- [Caldwell] Just going from town to town,

distributing honey and treats.

- [Nathan] Distributing bees.

- [Caldwell] (laughs) Distributing bees.

- [Nathan] People are wondering what happened

to all the bees, they're all on this boy.

- [Caldwell] So, yeah, Treater Trunks

became Johnny Applebees and he goes from town to town,

fighting crime and, I guess, saving the bee population

'cause it was on the out and out,

but now he is revitalizing the bees.

- [Nathan] Yeah. - [Caldwell] I think

that you're gonna find honey wherever you want it now.

- [Nicholas] We don't know what causes sudden hive collapse.

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nicholas] Is that

the syndrome that-- - [Caldwell] That is, yeah.

- [Nicholas] I think one of the theories is Round Up.

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nicholas] I think

it's an obsolete theory, but if the bees don't know that,

if they see a-- - [Nathan] Just any pesticide.

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nathan] Or herbicide.

- [Caldwell] Yeah, they see like a farmer spraying that DDT,

they're just gonna kinda go into defense mode automatically

and probably just immolate him.

- [Nicholas] Yeah, if he's got,

I don't know how Round Up is dispensed really, but--

- [Caldwell] I think like you gotta draw

like the most old timey spray cone.

- [Nicholas] Oh right, yeah, those things.

I forgot about those things.

- [Caldwell] Yeah, yeah, yeah,

like the big tube with like a, oh yeah, there it is.

It looks a giant icing dispenser,

but full of drugs.

This farmer is fully minding his own business.

- [Nathan] Yeah. - [Caldwell] He was

not expecting the golden death (laughs) to come to (laughs).

- [Nathan] The golden death.

- [Caldwell] Is this farmer spraying down his crops?

- [Nicholas] He might even be directing it

at the trees themselves.

(Caldwell gasps) - [Nathan] Oh,

it all comes back around.

- [Caldwell] A silent war between farmer and tree.

- [Nicholas] "I'd be growing more corn

if it wasn't for these damn face plants."

- [Caldwell] (laughs) 'Cause you think

that these lovely trees

with their beautiful enormous faces

are just munching all his corn,

so he's gotta poison them.

- [Nathan] Trees famously love corn, in this world.

- [Caldwell] Is this like an action shot

of Johnny Applebees springing into motion?

- [Nicholas] Yeah, he should be diving right

for this guy.

- [Caldwell] Absolutely.

- He's probably yelling something cool, like

"Honey, I'm home."

(Caldwell laughs) - Oh my God.

- Oh yes.

Protector of the lovely trees.

Oh, are these bee bullets?

- [Nicholas] Yeah, they probably like in addition

to holding this guy up in the air,

they're probably buzzing around him.

(Nathan laughs) It's kinda, you know,

you don't really know how Daenerys steers the dragon--

- [Caldwell] Right. - [Nicholas] You just

kinda gotta suspend your belief

that their like minds are sort of melded,

like a rat in a cook's hat.

(Caldwell laughs)

- [Nathan] Love the face he's making. (laughs)

- [Caldwell] What is he saying there?

- [Nathan] I liked "Honey, I'm home."

- [Caldwell] "Honey, I'm home" is pretty good.

To me, the face is saying, sounds like he's just saying,

"Fucking stop it."

- [Nathan] (laughs) Or just screaming,

he just sort of an inhuman screech.

- Yeah, to him, it sounds like a witty bon mot

but to the farmer it's just (buzzing)

- To the farmer (laughs)

- Yeah, I like the sound effect a lot.

- [Caldwell] Aw.

- [Nathan] This farmer has no idea how fucked he is.

- [Caldwell] (laughs) I mean look at his expression.

He doesn't even know what's gonna happen to him.

- [Nicholas] Maybe the farmer's just clobbered.

- [Caldwell] (laughs) OK, yeah.

- [Nathan] Managar, this is why we need special guests--

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nathan] On the show,

because like we usually like we'll draw like a character

or one scene, but we're getting like a play by play.

This is very special.

- [Caldwell] Cartoon-O-Tron's gonna be able to use this.

- [Nathan] (laughs) Oh my God. - [Caldwell] Oh.

Wait, is he like vampire biting him?

- [Managar] He's clearly getting absorbed.

- [Nicholas] He's just clinging as tenaciously as he can.

(Nathan laughs)

So that maximum stinging occurs.

(Caldwell laughs)

- [Managar] Oh, it's about surface area.

(Caldwell laughs) - [Nicholas] I bet the bees,

if they sting the same place,

they could probably like forge a hole into his chest.

- [Nathan] Uh-huh. - [Nicholas] So that

they can then start entering the farmer's body.

- [Caldwell] Oh. - [Nathan] Uh-huh.

I think our biggest problem is--

- [Caldwell] Mmhm. - [Nathan] We usually use

the prompt we get as sort of our North Star--

- [Caldwell] Yeah. - [Nathan] And, I think,

just taking it as a jumping off point

and then seeing how far we can get.

- [Caldwell] How far away from the words

that were said to us.

- [Nathan] Because this is one of my favorite things.

- [Caldwell] Yeah, no, this is the best thing

that's ever been done on the show.

- [Nicholas] There are so many bees inside the farmer

(Nathan laughs) he's swelling,

and I would imagine that some of them

are coming out of his orifices--

- [Nathan] Uh-huh. - [Nicholas] Like from

inside out. - [Nathan] Yeah, yeah, yeah.

- [Caldwell] Yeah. - [Nicholas] And I think

some kind of insult to injury would be

that bee boy could like fly up into the sky

with his bees-- - [Caldwell] Yeah.

- [Nicholas] And be carrying the body of the farmer,

(Nathan laughs) perhaps by his suspenders,

(Caldwell and Nathan laugh) you know, just kinda flying--

- [Nathan] Uh-huh. - [Caldwell] Yeah.

- [Nicholas] And the big insult would

just be dropping his swollen body.

(Nathan laughs) - [Managar] His swollen,

ruined corpse. - [Nicholas] Yeah,

swollen, ruined, bee-filled corpse.

- [Nathan] (laughs) Like I don't know who the show is for

but, like, it's one of those ones

where it's like you can't look away.

- [Caldwell] Uh-huh. - [Nathan] It's not

a feel-good show, it's not, you know,

it's not like a action show necessarily

because there doesn't seem to be any way

to stop this bee boy.

- I think I've got it.

- Uh-huh.

- I think this is the first show for bees.

- Oh my God.

- [Caldwell] Because, again,

we've talked about hive collapse,

but you turn this show on in front of a hive,

they're all gonna get so amped about being bees

that they're gonna produce twice as much honey.

- [Nathan] So this is a show that is exclusively

for bees-- - [Caldwell] For bees.

- [Nathan] It's to get them excited--

- [Caldwell] Uh-huh. - [Nathan] About taking

their revenge-- - [Nicholas] It's at least

for the bee cause.

- [Nathan] Uh-huh. - [Caldwell] Exactly.

- [Nicholas] You know, you can promote bee awareness,

you can probably have some PBS-like thank yous at the end.

"Only with our cooperation can we

prevent sudden hive collapse."

- [Caldwell] Yeah. - [Nathan] Exactly,

yeah, yeah, yeah.

- Alright, fellas, the crimson flame has alit

and the hour of judgment is at hand.

All rise, Cartoon-O-Tron, bestow us with your animation

and production qualities.

(mechanical whirring) - Oh, behave.

(Nathan laughs)

- Oh, no, he didn't.

- Sorry, I'm just feeling sassy because I'm full of bees.

(Nathan laughs)

Literally, I am full of bees, that is what I run on,

that is my primary power source,

so this drawing is going to give me some serious pep.

- Hopefully, the bees inside you appreciate the show we made

'cause it's for them we decided.

- For bees, by bees.

- And starring bees, yeah.

(Caldwell laughs)

- Sounds like the perfect show to me.

Nicholas, you have done an amazing job.

You are friend of the bees and will never be stung again.

- I pledge my service (Caldwell and Nathan laugh)

to their royalty.

- It's beautiful, what a beautiful moment.

- Come with me after the show

and I will give you some of my special jelly.

(Nathan laughs)

- The royal jelly?

- The most royal possible, but first I have

to eat this cartoon and make a show.

- Yep, here you go.

(machinery whirring) Enjoy.

- Slurp.

(electronic buzzing)

(spraying) (buzzing)

(whooshing) (louder buzzing)

(buzzing intensifies)

(whooshing)

(whooshing)

(whooshing)

(light popping)

(gentle piano music)

(buzzing)

(buzzing)

(buzzing)

(buzzing)

- OK, well, that is Untitled Bee Project.

There's just too many puns to choose from

when it comes to bees.

Managar, what did you think of the show.

- To paraphrase the poet, Joyce Kilmer--

- [Caldwell] Mm. - I think

that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree.

(Nathan laughs) Poems are made by fools

like me, but only God can make a tree.

Oh, hey, I don't see anything about bees in here.

(Nathan laughs)

What did you do?

What did you do?

The title was trees! (Nathan laughs)

The farmer is dead.

- Well-- - Chaos is reigning.

(Nathan laughs) Colony collapse disorder

hasn't actually been an issue,

it's been largely resolved.

- Oh no.

- You are stepping on so many toes,

I got a mountain of paperwork. (Nathan laughs)

Dear God, why did you think you could get away with this.

- I dunno, we thought-- - We thought of a fun tangent.

A fun turn. - You know, it's violent,

it's for bees.

- Nicholas, you did your best,

obviously the pact will remain honored,

as soon as you return to the surface world,

your next three projects will be approved

without even needing to resort to crowdfunding.

- Wow. - [Managar] Yeah,

normal funding. - That's a good pact.

- Nathan, Caldwell, here's the thing,

bees, haha, funny, bees, great, you know what's not funny?

Wasps.

- Oh. - Everyone hates wasps,

they can sting more than once.

- That's why a big one's gonna lay eggs

in both of your sternums in about 30 seconds, so--

- [Caldwell] Oh. - Make peace

with whatever God you still worship,

'cause I am outta here.

- Well. - I can hear the wasps buzzing

and I hate the sound of wasps.

Bees, a nice pleasant hum, wasps--

- Mmhm. - Just gross.

- Yeah, let's really talk some shit

about wasps right before they come to end us.

- Yeah. - Well, Nick,

it was really cool to meet you.

- Yeah. - I wish it had been

under happier circumstances-- - Mmhm.

- But, uh, hey, good luck on your next projects.

- Yeah. - Sounds like they're

gonna be real winners.

- Thanks for having me on.

Great meeting you guys. - Yeah.

- Absolutely, yeah.

- Oh, there he goes and, oh, here come the wasps.

- Oh, look at these idiots.

- [Nathan] Oh, look at these dumb--

- [Caldwell] Oh. - [Nathan] Right

into my sternum.

- [Caldwell] Well, thanks for watching Cartoon Hell.

We're here forever and we are just chock full of wasps.

- [Nathan] Buzz, buzz.

- [Caldwell] Bee seeing ya.
