(Broker)

(Adapted from Miao Juan's novel, "Broker")

(Episode 36)

Without me,

a black-haired yellow-skinned Chinese woman...

like yourself...

would never in this life...

be able to publish a paper...

in such an authoritative journal.

Honestly,

it's a really heartwarming and touching story...

but really stupid.

Do you expect me to believe...

that you're doing this all for your country?

Come on.

Let's be real here.

What do you really want?

Zhou Xiao Shan.

I've thought it through.

I don't want to admit defeat.

It's because I hope that...

from now on, in whatever field,

any achievements attained by the Chinese...

can be complimented by everyone...

instead of being questioned.

This will require every one of us to do our part.

So this time,

I have to step forward.

I'm glad you feel that way.

No matter what happens,

I will fight by your side.

What should we do next?

An eye for an eye.

Mr. Qiu.

Jia Ning has thought it through.

We won't have to drag her to the press conference.

Zhou Xiao Shan.

Hello, Jia Ning?

Dad.

What is it?

Are you busy?

No, I'm reading a magazine.

Dad.

I need to ask you for a favor.

Ask away.

This one.

Mr. Qiu.

Here's the script for the press conference.

The emcee will go on the stage first.

Then it's your turn.

- That's one. - Okay, sure.

Okay, I got it.

Some companies might come later.

This is the information on those companies.

- Okay. - You might have to be alert.

Okay.

It's already quite late.

Let's order food delivery.

Okay.

Okay, hold on.

Me and my memory. I actually forgot about it.

Mr. Qiu.

Happy birthday.

That's right, Dad.

Today is your 60th birthday.

Who cares about birthdays at this age?

Let's just forget it.

Am I right?

Mr. Qiu.

As for your birthday,

Jia Ning has kept it on her mind.

We even chose a gift for you.

I also get a gift?

What gift is it?

Hold on.

Judging by the look in your eyes, it's quite a secret gift?

You'll see.

Okay.

Mr. Qiu.

This is...

This is...

Why don't I remember taking this photo?

You're right about not remembering it.

It's photoshopped.

Why did you photoshop it?

Jia Ning told me that you like photography a lot.

You have many cameras.

But...

the both of you didn't get to take pictures together.

So...

I thought about photoshopping you two together.

I hope you like it.

Mr. Qiu.

It's photoshopped,

but Jia Ning's thoughtfulness is genuinely sincere.

Yes.

Happy birthday, Dad.

Happy birthday.

Happy birthday.

Happy birthday.

I like it.

It's wonderful.

Thank you.

- Let's eat. - Okay, let's eat.

- Here you go. - Here.

I'll put it here.

Here.

We're having takeout today.

Some other day,

come over to dine at our home.

Okay, Mr. Qiu. I'll be there.

Okay, let's eat.

You're in a good mood?

Don't you think the way my dad treats you...

is a bit more relaxed?

Yes, a little.

Right.

Before the press conference,

I'm meeting someone.

Who is it?

You mean...

Qiu Jia Ning is holding a press conference tomorrow?

Yes, Mr. Ruan.

She's there to explain something.

That Qiu Jia Ning,

she sure is tough.

Mr. Ruan.

About investing in Plan O,

what's the plan?

I'm just doing it to target Zhou Xiao Shan.

So...

we'll see how he does tomorrow.

Hello?

Qiu Jia Ning and Zhou Xiao Shan are here to see you.

Mr. Ruan.

Qiu Jia Ning and Zhou Xiao Shan are here.

They're downstairs and they've come to see you.

Let's go.

You're here to visit me late at night.

It must be something important.

Mr. Ruan.

You're the investor that our company strove hard to win over.

So tomorrow,

I hope that you'll attend my press conference.

I'd like to take this opportunity...

to ease your doubts about our company.

I see the unyielding spirit in Ms. Qiu.

I know...

that you hate Zhou Xiao Shan.

But Xiang Lan is dead.

Teaming up with TKS...

to spread false rumors about me,

you're the one who set it up, right?

You want Zhou Xiao Shan to be like you.

You want him to watch the woman he loves suffer...

while there's nothing he can do.

But you forgot.

I'm not Xiang Lan.

I won't compromise.

Of course you're not Xiang Lan.

No one can be compared to her.

No one can love her as much as I do.

Ms. Qiu.

On the day of our wedding,

I told Xiang Lan,

"I know you don't love me yet."

"It's okay. I can wait."

"I'll be with you for the rest of my life."

"Once you've gotten over Zhou Xiao Shan,"

"until you slowly fall in love with me."

I remember that Xiang Lan smiled.

Such a beautiful smile.

That's the most wonderful memory...

I have of Xiang Lan.

But the next day,

that's when the nightmare began.

She spent most of her time just sitting and staring blankly.

She forgot to eat and sleep.

She lost so much weight in a short time.

Until one day, she fainted.

When she woke up, she held me and cried.

She begged me.

She begged me to save her.

She wanted me to help her forget Zhou Xiao Shan...

and pull herself together.

I once thought that it hurts the most...

when someone I love doesn't love me back.

But until...

I saw Xiang Lan wither day by day...

before my eyes...

and she slowly faded away,

I then realized that...

the cruelest thing in the world is to watch her suffer...

because of another man,

and there was nothing I could do.

All of this,

it's because of your boyfriend,

Zhou Xiao Shan.

Mr. Ruan.

I understand how you feel.

But even if I die,

Xiang Lan won't come back to life.

Why can't we move on?

Move on?

Do you deserve it?

Mr. Ruan.

I admit it.

I was indeed...

affected by your revenge.

But I won't run away.

I won't blame Zhou Xiao Shan either.

The truth...

will be revealed tomorrow.

The truth?

When will the truth be revealed?

Zhou Xiao Shan.

The truth will be revealed.

Don't you think it's ironic?

That's all I have to say.

Zhou Xiao Shan, let's go.

Wait.

I need to talk...

to you alone.

There's still one biggest truth of all that I haven't revealed.

Tell me.

If I tell Qiu Jia Ning about this,

will she still love you?

Don't tell her.

Beg me.

I beg you.

I didn't catch that.

Please don't tell Qiu Jia Ning.

Okay, I promise you.

On the condition that you return to City A with me.

Why are you doing this to me?

Either you tell her yourself...

or I can do it for you.

But if I were to tell her,

Qiu Jia Ning will become your accomplice.

By then, you two will never be able to clear your name.

I either ruin you alone...

or ruin you two?

It's up to you.

You have one night left.

Think about it carefully.

Ms. Qiu.

Good luck with the press conference tomorrow.

Good night.

(Original Life, Plan O Press Conference)

(Original Life, Plan O Press Conference)

Good morning.

Thank you for making time...

to come and hear me out.

Let me introduce myself.

I'm Qiu Jia Ning.

I'm currently working at Original Life's subsidiary lab,

Plan O.

I'm the project manager.

There have been a lot of rumors about me online lately.

In regards to these rumors,

I will clarify them one by one today.

Last week,

a famous European biochemist,

Professor Harry,

accused me of plagiarizing...

their laboratory's core secret.

Indeed.

Before joining Plan O,

I worked at Harry's Lab.

But the real reason I left the lab...

is because...

It's because Professor Harry plagiarized her paper.

Who is this?

Su Qian.

Professor Harry...

published a paper on "Cure" that was about telomerase.

He actually plagiarized Qiu Jia Ning's research result.

Ma'am, who are you?

I'll answer that question later.

Ms. Su.

May I?

Nice to meet you, I'm Su Qian.

I'm a former researcher at Plan O.

I left and joined Professor Harry's lab.

I'm now the project consultant for Tiancheng Funds.

Plan O and Professor Harry...

share a very similar research direction.

But I can tell you that...

Professor Harry...

submitted his application for clinical trials three times,

but they were all rejected by the FDA.

If Qiu Jia Ning had stolen the lab's confidential information,

why was Professor Harry's application rejected...

while Plan O...

progresses steadily into the second phase of clinical trials?

Could Qiu Jia Ning's departure...

really cause Professor Harry such huge damage?

- Yes. - That makes sense.

- She's right. - Yes.

Thank you.

Actually,

that paper is only my first draft.

There were still many flaws and it needed much revision.

As for the revised paper,

today, it is posted on my personal Weibo account...

and our official account.

I'd like to ask the professionals to compare them.

One more thing.

There's a video...

of my conversation with the CEO of TKS on the Internet.

Whoever watched this video...

would say that I've betrayed Plan O.

In light of that,

I would like someone to explain.

Who is she inviting?

- Who can it be Mr. Wang? - Who is it?

Isn't Mr. Wang in a coma after having a stroke?

Who is this?

Who is this?

Him?

Qiu Yao Ming, the chairman of Qiu Group.

Really? Why is he here?

Ladies and gentlemen...

and all the reporters.

Nice to meet you.

Let me introduce myself.

My name is Qiu Yao Ming.

I'm the chairman of Qiu Group.

Qiu Jia Ning is my daughter.

This young lady really is born with a silver spoon.

I watched Jia Ning grow up.

Her ambition for science...

is persistent and pure.

Money and fame...

won't ever waver her belief.

In that regard,

I have full confidence in my daughter.

(Original Life, Plan O Press Conference)

This gentleman, do you have a question?

Hello, Mr. Qiu.

You can trust your daughter all you want,

but what about the video?

How would you explain it?

That's a good question.

When I saw that video online,

I thought something was off.

So our company applied...

some special techniques and methods...

to attain the original copy.

When our PR Department attained this original video...

from this video,

we discovered something important.

The video...

has been edited.

- I see. - I see.

Why was it edited?

What did they edit out?

Aren't you all curious?

I'll show you now.

(Original Life, Plan O Press Conference)

Mr. Gale.

To TKS, Plan O...

is only worth 500,000 dollars?

Yes, of course.

It's inappropriate...

to only talk to you about the money.

This is the Harry Laboratory Transfer Agreement.

Now,

if you come to work for us,

we can make sure that Dr. Harry never shows his face...

in the scientific community ever again.

I can tell that TKS is sincere.

So do we have an agreement?

But I don't think it's good enough.

It's five million dollars...

and access to one of the world's best research facilities.

It's not good enough for you?

I believe there's a third option.

Well, we're happy to do whatever you want.

You can destroy me.

Ms. Qiu, please.

Why on earth...

would we ever do anything like that to you?

You're one of the most outstanding research scientists in the world.

And we have the most advanced laboratory.

If you come and work for us,

it can only be...

a win-win situation.

How could anyone say no to that?

If that's true,

why do you ask to see me in secret?

Okay.

Even if I betray Plan O today...

for my own interest,

what will happen next?

We will make you...

the brightest star in the scientific industry.

Yes.

Then,

the Chinese will remain unknown...

in this field forever.

Chinese scientists after me...

will still be doubted and disdained...

by the scientific industry in the West.

In the future, if someone...

has a breakthrough in academics like me,

their works will still be plagiarized.

They will not be recognized by the world.

I'm sorry, Mr. Gale.

I...

and everyone in our lab...

will not let that happen again.

We'll do whatever it takes to let the world know...

that the Chinese...

have made progress in this field.

We've created priceless wealth...

for our own country...

and for the world.

Honestly,

it's a really heartwarming and touching story...

but really stupid.

Do you expect me to believe...

that you're doing this all for your country?

Come on.

Let's be real here.

What do you really want?

I want China...

to be named as the founder of Plan O.

That's my only condition.

You can't do it, can you?

It's okay.

The press conference will begin soon.

You're welcome...

to witness the strength of the scientists of China.

- Well said. - It really is.

It's so inspiring.

(Original Life, Plan O Press Conference)

After watching this video,

I believe you can make your judgment...

about what's true or false.

Now,

to those who defamed Qiu Jian Ning,

we will press legal charges.

I've never seen my dad so cool.

Yes, your dad has always been very cool.

Don't you think I look a bit like your dad, Jia Xin?

No.

Are you still mad at me?

Jia Xin, don't be mad.

Look, today is such a joyous occasion.

Just for this day,

don't be mad at me, okay?

Look, I bought you a cake.

Here, have a bite. Let me feed you.

I don't want any.

- It's your favorite. - I don't want any.

I said I don't want any.

Don't be angry anymore, okay?

I'm still angry.

Come on.

I'll help you hold it.

You must be tired of holding it, right?

Here. Can I join you?

Okay.

Thank you.

Thank you, Dad.

I'm taking this opportunity...

to share a few heartfelt words with everyone today.

when I was discriminated at Harry's Lab,

I chose to put up with it.

It's because...

I believe time will tell.

Last week...

My sister's glare is so fierce.

Look at her.

But I still chose to put up with it.

I hope to let sleeping dogs lie.

Until one day,

I found out that the public opinion has changed.

It's not about just questioning me,

but the entire Chinese scientific community...

and even the entire country.

I realized that I couldn't put up with this anymore.

I have to step forward.

It's not just to clear my name,

but also to uphold the reputation of all Chinese scientists.

It's also for the honor...

of all Chinese scientists and science researchers.

Plan O, since it was first developed to proceed with clinical trials,

it's a result of every scientist's efforts.

Everyone's doubts will only keep motivating us.

Science, medicine, education, and economy.

China's power will grow stronger and stronger.

Please look forward to it.

- Okay. - Sure.

Jia Ning!

Jia Ning!

(Original Life, Plan O Press Conference)

Well, that's strange.

What's strange?

Your dad and sister both have higher IQs, right?

Why are you...

Are you adopted?

Look into my eyes and you'll get the idea.

What idea?

Why are you so...

Jia Xin, are you going to scold me?

Just do it. I know I deserve it.

Scold me.

Xiao Ye.

What are you doing?

Nothing.

Old man, do you know men and women should keep their distance?

Dr. Qin, what are you looking for?

An old man. Is there an old man here?

- Do you see any? - I'm talking about you.

Young man, why are you so clueless?

At your age, even calling me "brother" is inappropriate.

- Get it? - "Brother"?

You're 10 years older than us. How are you not an old man?

I'm 9 years older than Jia Xin. It's not 10.

She's a year older than me. What's wrong?

Xiao Ye, just cut it out.

Take a look in the mirror.

Okay.

For Jia Xin's sake,

I won't say another word.

- Jia Xin, let's go. - Jia Xin, stay.

You can't go, Jia Xin.

- Jia Xin, don't go. - It's break time.

Take away your paw!

- Let go! - You're hurting Jia Xin, okay?

Jia Xin, I need to talk to you.

It's about work.

Do you think I don't know that Jia Xin doesn't work with you now?

It's about work?

It's for personal reasons.

Sure, old man.

First, we met by chance for rock climbing.

Then you expressed concern for the drunk driving incident.

Now you're just out to vie with me?

Your old-school tactics are so out of date, okay?

You're in no position to say that.

As long as it's good.

- Do you want to fight? - Xiao Ye!

Come on, fight. Stop that. Let him hit me.

- Dr. Qin! - I'm afraid you won't. Come on.

Can you two stop fighting?

Jia Xin...

Jia Xin.

Jia Xin.

Jia Xin...

Jia Xin.

Jia Xin, wait up.

Jia Xin!

Jia Xin.

Jia Xin, wait up.

Jia Xin.

That was dangerous.

You were wedged in between us.

What if I didn't hold back?

It's wrong to use violence.

Can't you see who started it?

How did he annoy you?

I put my hand on his shoulder.

Didn't you see what he did after that?

He kept holding your hand.

Shouldn't I be angry?

I've finally figured it out.

He's declaring war on me.

I'm not afraid of anyone.

Tell him to bring it on.

Xiao Ye.

I don't know what to say.

All this happened because of me.

If I hadn't hesitated,

you won't fight with Dr. Qin.

Why are you still protecting him?

No.

I don't know what to say.

Xiao Ye.

How about...

Let's take a time-out?

Time-out?

Why should we?

When we first started dating,

I wasn't very levelheaded and I acted on impulse.

What do you mean?

I think...

I don't like you as much as I thought.

Hold on.

Jia Xin.

I shouldn't have hit him.

That's because I'm jealous. I care about you.

I was wrong, okay?

It's not about that either.

What is it then? Tell me.

I think that when we first started dating,

I was attracted to you...

because you're my idol.

That's why...

we sort of rushed into this relationship.

But I realized that we weren't a good match.

Xiao Ye.

We...

Let's break up.

I'm sorry.

Thank you, Dad.

You're amazing, Jia Ning.

I'm about to cry.

Us too.

Thank you, Ms. Su.

Call me Su Qian from now on.

Thank you, Su Qian.

Keep going, Jia Ning.

Thank you.

- Goodbye. - Bye, Ms. Su.

Bye, Su Qian.

- Bye, Ms. Su - Su Qian.

Bye, Ms. Su.

- Thank you, Ms. Su. - Thank you, Ms. Su.

Okay.

You're all here.

Mr. Ruan, I believe you must have heard...

Ms. Qiu's speech.

If this isn't enough to clear...

Tiancheng Funds' and your doubts about our project,

there's nothing more we can do.

Ms. Qiu's speech was really good.

I have one last question.

Zhou Xiao Shan.

Didn't we meet...

at the university?

Maybe we did.

It seems that you've finally remembered.

So you two know each other?

I don't know if you're interested...

to know about Mr. Zhou Xiao Shan's past.

That's even more exciting than Ms. Qiu's speech.

Zhou Xiao Shan,

you have an achievement that we didn't know?

An achievement?

Yes.

Tell them.

Or should I?

Zhou Xiao Shan lied to you guys.

Ruan Wen Zhao.

Let's listen quietly...

to Mr. Zhou Xiao Shan's words.

That's right.

I lied to you.

That's right.

He lied to you.

When we were in university,

we were best friends.

We were also opponents.

He even hit me once.

But Zhou Xiao Shan,

when they asked you during due diligence interview,

why did you say you don't know Mr. Ruan?

What do you mean?

We've all been young once.

Right?

It's okay, Mr. Huang.

It's in the past.

Something so trivial won't affect our partnership.

Why are you scolding me again?

Will you stop crying?

Don't cry. It's cold.

Don't cry.

Go away!

No, I'm not leaving you alone.

Leave me alone!

I like you, that's why I care about you!

That's why I miss you. That's why I can't help but be nice to you!

What nonsense are you talking about?

Qiu Jia Xin.

Qiu Jia Xin, come here. Listen.

Stand still.

I used to think that...

I'm in love with your sister.

I found out later that...

you're the one that I love.

Are you crazy?

The cafeteria is selling your favorite sweet and sour ribs.

You didn't get it?

It was already sold out when I got there.

I heard...

all the sweet and sour ribs were bought by one person.

Who is it?

I bought them all.

Yan.

Are you looking for Qin Bin?

He's not here.

I thought you were such a ditz.

You're the deputy director now.

I used to be like that...

He's inside.

Where do you live now?

Same place.

- The same place? - Over there.

I live there now. Can you see it?

What is that woman's relationship with Dr. Qin?

She is his patient.

Yan, you're lying.

You wouldn't have stopped me if she were a patient.

She is...

Qin Bin's ex-girlfriend.

But it's nothing now.

She's just feeling unwell so she came to see Qin Bin.

Let's get you checked out.

Don't worry. It's nothing.

Okay, I'll do as you say.

She's quite pretty.

Yes. No.

So-so.

What is her job?

Jia Xin, please spare me.

Don't ask, I'm begging you.

She must be outstanding then?

A photographer in France.

Let me ask you one last question.

Which one of them broke off the relationship?

I see.

No. What do you get?

Jia Xin.

- I'll get going then. - I'll walk you out.

Okay.

You should come to the hospital early tomorrow.

At the registration, tell the nurse my name.

Just come right up to my office.

Okay, thank you.

Don't mention it. You're welcome.

- I'll get going. Bye. - Bye.

Didn't you leave?

I...

I'm just observing to see...

if old sparks might get ignited again?

Are you sick? What are you saying?

Your ex-girlfriend showed up.

Do you really feel nothing at all?

Zhao Yan, you're sick. How many years has it been?

When she dumped you,

you were so upset that you almost killed yourself.

Do you really feel fine?

I wet my bed when I was eight.

Do I still wet my bed now?

Am I disabled?

Did you really wet your bed...

until you were eight?

Let me ask you one last thing.

Have you really put that behind you?

Of course.

It's friendship. We're just friends.

Friendship.

Something's wrong.

What is it?

Jia Xin came looking for you.

She's brought you Luckin Coffee.

I stopped her from disturbing you.

And?

And then...

She sounded me out.

I told her that's your ex-girlfriend.

An unfinished business.

- I... - You're such a good friend.

Hold on. Don't be mad.

Actually, I think that this matter isn't that serious.

That's right. It's not serious.

I'm the only one that gets sacrificed.

Where is Jia Xin?

Over there.

Jia Xin.

Are you upset?

Don't you have a patient?

Don't drink my coffee.

Didn't you get it for me?

It's not for you.

How did you know I had a patient?

It's just a guess.

I can feel that...

you're now filled with negative vibes.

What are you talking about?

You should now know how I feel...

whenever I see you with Jiang Xiao Ye, right?

My heart is full of jealous vibes.

No.

Super jealous vibes.

I'm not.

Don't listen to Zhao Yan. I've bashed him up.

He's always talking nonsense.

Yan was telling the truth, right?

- It's not true. - It's true!

Yes, but that was in the past.

Jia Xin.

It's late.

You didn't even go home after work...

and you even bought me coffee.

Do you have something to tell me?

I'm working overtime.

I'm dedicated to my work.

Is that so?

Yes.

If you don't tell me,

I'm going back to work.

I'll count to three.

I'll leave on the count of three.

- Three. - Dr. Qin.

I...

I broke up with Xiao Ye.

Basically, we broke up.

If you broke up, you broke up.

If you didn't, you didn't.

What do you mean actually?

It means...

I don't think...

we're a good match.

See? I told you.

You're not a good match.

So...

you've been waiting for so long and you even bought me coffee...

just to tell me this?

I told you, I...

I'm dedicated to my work, so I'm working overtime.

I bought myself a cup of coffee to freshen up.

All right, I'm going to work.

Dr. Qin.

I just wanted to tell you.

I got it.

What do you know?

I know...

you broke up with Jiang Xiao Ye.

What else do you know?

I also know that...

you're working late.

Very professional.

You're so annoying.

Jia Xin.

Thank you for telling me that.

I'm really happy.

Dr. Qin.

Do you still have feelings for your ex-girlfriend?

Of course not. I told you. It's all in the past.

That was ages ago.

- Really? - Of course.

Dr. Qin.

Can you stop treating your ex-girlfriend?

All right?

Jia Xin, you're being unreasonable.

But didn't you just say it's all in the past?

It is in the past. But she's my patient, I...

It's different, right?

Your ex-girlfriend came to you in the middle of the night.

Are you actually quite happy?

I swear. I wasn't happy at all.

Besides, it's not in the middle of the night.

Zhao Yan hasn't even left yet.

If Yan gets off from work,

does that make you happy?

Your ex-girlfriend dumped you.

Now she has come back to you.

Are you super happy?

I'm not, Jia Xin.

Jia Xin, can you not be so childish?

You called me childish again.

Fine, I'll stop calling you that.

Then you...

Let me make this clear, okay?

Look. Ruo Xi has been living abroad.

Ruo Xi.

You sound so intimate.

Don't you know her last name?

Jiang Ruo Xi.

Yes, Jiang Ruo Xi has been abroad for years.

A while ago,

she made plans to return to China for work.

When she got back,

she noticed some health issues.

She doesn't know anyone in China.

I'm the only one she can go to.
