There's a carnival-like atmosphere
here at the Halifax police station tonight.

The block immediately around the police
station has become like Drag City.

The rowdyism and tire-squealing is largely
the work of a relatively small, but loud,

group of young drivers.

A group that is being urged on by
many of the striking policeman.

The area around the police station is
heavily lined with cars and spectators.

All of them here to see the spectical of
the first police strike ever

in Halifax's history.

The policemen themselves are out in full
force on the picket lines.

Harassing but not yet preventing
senior NCOs

about them called in to take over
the police work

that was abandoned early this evening
when the strike started.

However, not all the men on the picket
lines here are not happy to be on strike.

A few have told us it's a terrible
situation that never should have happened.

And there concern for the safety of the
city and it's citizens.

However more militant members of
the Patrolman's Association

are set for what they feel may be
a long, tough lock-out

even though no one here
is receiving strike pay.

The situation is
expected to worsen

later tonight after the clubs
and bars have closed

and there's every indication it will
be a long and rowdy night

in the immediate area of the
Halifax police station.
