"How It Really Happened."

I'm Hill Harper.

She was a 2-year-old
from Orlando, Florida,

Caylee, a little girl

who her grandmother said loved
green beans, "Bambi" movies,

singing and dancing.

She was raised by Casey Anthony,

a single mom
who got pregnant at age 18.

The pair lived with Casey's
parents, George and Cindy.

On the surface, they had
a stable life full of love,

nothing out of the ordinary.

And then one day,

Caylee Anthony
just seemed to vanish,

and Caylee, Casey,
George, and Cindy

would all be propelled
into the national spotlight.

Cindy: Casey, our whole life's
turned upside down

looking for
this little girl.

I know.

Trust me, if I could be
out there with you,

I would be in a heartbeat.

We're going to see
her little face again.

I pray to God every day
that we do.

Now joining us,
George and Cindy Anthony.

They are the grandparents

of missing Florida toddler
Caylee Anthony.

When did you last see Caylee?

I last saw her on June 16th,
the day after Father's Day.

What happened the day
she went missing?

We actually didn't find out
until July.

There were certain things
that stood out in this case.

Cindy's call to 911
was definitely in the top five.

It just haunted people
when they heard it.

That moment, that call, is the
inciting incident of this case

that just took over
the public's imagination --

"child missing,"
"a month ago."

If you put it in a movie,
nobody'd believe it.

The whole Casey Anthony saga
begins on July 15, 2008,

when Cindy and George Anthony
get a notice

that their daughter's car
was in an impound lot

and had been there
for quite some time.

And so they went to the tow yard
to pick up the car.

Fanning:
The owner of the tow yard and
George walked back to the car,

and the car smelled bad,
really bad.

I got within 3 feet
of my daughter's car,

and the worst odor

that you could possibly smell
in this world,

and I've smelled
that odor before.

It smelled, uh, like
a decomposed body.

As I walked around
the back of that car,

before I even stuck
the key in it,

I did whisper to myself,

"I hope it's not my daughter
and my granddaughter."

I felt that in my heart.

And when they open
the back trunk, flies come out.

There were no dead bodies.

They find this garbage bag
full of garbage

and other things.

Fanning: George was a former
law enforcement person,

so he recognized the smell
of a decomposing body,

and he was still very troubled.

He knew it couldn't be
that trash.

Up until this moment,
Casey Anthony had been lying

to her parents for 31 days.

Cindy: Casey had gone
on an extended trip,

and her trip just kept
getting extended and extended,

and I never got a chance
to speak with Caylee

during that time.

Cindy had been talking with
Casey on the phone repeatedly

trying to find out
where Caylee was.

Fanning: She kept telling them
she was in Jacksonville,

or she was at the beach, or
any place but there in Orlando.

And when they realize that her
car has been in an impound lot

and she hasn't been
in Jacksonville and the beach,

it must have hit them
like a ton of bricks.

"Oh, my God.

What has been going on
for the last 31 days?"

Where is Caylee Anthony?

I started calling her friends,
and I found one friend

that had just seen Casey
a few hours prior.

And she took me
to where Casey was at,

and when I got there,
there was no Caylee.

So I started to feel like,
"What's going on?"

I just started getting
an eerie feeling

that something wasn't right
in Casey's voice.

And that's when Cindy
calls the police

for the first time and says,

"I want this girl,
my daughter, arrested."

Banfield: Cindy actually
called 911 three times.

The first two times
were not fruitful,

but it was the third call to 911
that became famous.

It's clear that Cindy was
quite upset and distraught,

as could be expected.

Who's not hysterical? Casey.

Cool as a cucumber.

Velez-Mitchell:
Why didn't she call 31 days ago?

That's the key question
that would haunt us

throughout the entire case,

and the 911 operator
asks it right off the bat.

When the police came,
Cindy was incredibly upset.

The scene in
the Casey Anthony home

is out of
a Tennessee Williams play.

There is turmoil in the house.

I mean, Cindy and Casey are just
at each other's throats.

She's frantic.
You know, she's worried sick.

She's confronting Casey trying
to get the truth out of her.

George, for some reason,
seemed very calm.

Really, it didn't make
much sense at the time.

The initial responding officers
asked some initial questions.

They notified the on-call
missing persons detective,

who on that particular date
was Yuri Melich.

Banfield: So, Casey
had a story right away.

She told the police that
she had dropped her little girl

with a babysitter.

Savage: She had believed
that Zenaida Gonzalez

had essentially
kidnapped Caylee

and was holding her
against her will.

The babysitter's name
was always Zanny.

We never really got
a full description of Zanny.

I know she's got brown
curly hair.

About shoulder length.

She wears it straight.

It -- curly.

It's curly, but she also
wears it straight.

This is what I'm telling you.
It's called a straightener.

How tall is she?

About 5'7"-ish.

She's just, like, maybe an inch
or two shorter than Dad.

Banfield: So almost immediately,
they took Casey over

to this Zenaida Gonzales'
apartment

to find out who
this mystery babysitter was.

Allen: When we went
to the apartment complex

where Zanny, the nanny,
reportedly lived,

we learned that that apartment

where Casey said
she'd dropped Caylee off

had been vacant for months,

that no Zanny the nanny
lived there.

Anytime somebody
tells you a story

that doesn't really make sense,
you're obviously suspicious,

but suspicious of what?

And it's Z-E-N--

Z-E-N-A-I-D-A.

People want
that little girl found.

Good. The more people,
the better.

Everyone should
want her back.

Well, they do, Casey.

But do you think
after this long,

she'd still be local?

There's a possibility.

What's your gut
telling you right now?

My gut's telling me
that she's okay.

Okay, and your gut
tells you

that she's close
or she's hiding?

She's not far.

I know in my heart
she's not far.

I can feel it.

Jordan: And she takes them
all through the building

and to the end of a hallway and
looks at the cops and goes --

"Okay. You got me."

Cindy, are you now
saying you believe

that we're going
to find Caylee?

Oh, I believe we're going
to find Caylee

if the investigation
goes the right way.

On July 16th, 12 hours
into the investigation,

the police knew one thing.

They had a woman on their hands
named Casey Anthony

who claimed that her little
2-1/2-year-old daughter,

Caylee Anthony,
had been abducted by the nanny.

The next step is
to check out her claims

that she had a job at Universal.

Karas: She used to walk around
with an I.D.

that appeared to be a Universal
Studios identification,

you know, hanging on
a lanyard around her neck,

and her parents, you know,
thought that she worked there.

Cindy:
Casey wore it all the time.

It was green shamrocks
with white beads,

and then it had her
original Universal I.D. on it.

And so they take her

to Universal Studios.

Allen:
We walk with her up to the
employee entrance and watch her.

She essentially tells
the security guard

that she's an employee there.

At this point,
the security guard

looks on the computer screen

and says, "I'm sorry.

We don't have an employee here
by that name,"

at which point, Casey says,
"Oh, no, no, no.

I work here. I just don't have
my employee I.D."

She said she could take them
to her office.

Jordan: And she takes them
all through the building

until they finally get
to the end of a hallway,

whereupon she sticks her hands
in her back pockets

and spins around
and puts a big smile on her face

and looks at the cops
and goes --

"Okay. You got me.
I don't really work here."

Mason: The three officers then
took her into a small room,

closed the door,
and began to question her.

Allen:
At this point, Detective Melich

is a little bit more
confrontational with her.

He begins pushing her
a little harder.

Casey: This is
the honest-to-God's truth.

Of everything that I said,
I do not know where she is.

The last person
that I saw her with is Zenaida.

She's the last person
that I've seen my daughter with.

I don't want someone
that's going to tell me

that they know that I'm lying,
that's going to belittle me,

that won't listen
to what I'm saying to them.

I need someone that will

take the information
that I'm giving them.

Karas: That young woman,
who was 5'2", 105 pounds,

she held her own

with these seasoned
investigators

who, you know,
know how to interrogate,

know how to get a story
out of someone,

and she was steadfast
with her lies.

I feel if Casey
had done something

where she felt
that it was an accident,

I think she would have
come forward.

I don't think she'd be putting
the family through all of this,

so that's why
I really, truly believe

she would have cracked by now.

Profilers believed
that Casey was unlike anything

that they'd ever seen.

She was just very unique,
above-average intelligence.

She was creating friends,
creating bosses.

Allen: Well, it became clear
during that interview

that she simply wasn't going
to tell us the truth,

so we decide
we're going to arrest her

and charge her
with child neglect.

King: When they arrested her,
were you shocked, George?

Oh, absolutely.
They had their mind made up.

Cindy:
They had their mind made up.

They made judgment on her
within two hours

of having her in custody,
and that's the way it's been.

Did anyone ever
question motive?

There is no motive,
and they haven't found a motive.

Judge Jordan: Miss Anthony,
the court would say to you,

"Where is Caylee Anthony?"

But I can't ask -- can't force
you to answer that question,

but that's the question
I leave with you.

Do you understand?

Yes, sir.

Good evening.
Where is little Caylee Anthony,

and what does her now-jailed
mother know about her fate?

Velez-Mitchell: The story broke
nationally almost immediately,

because cops were desperate
to find this child

that they, at that point,
still believed was alive.

Where is little Caylee?

There were many photographs
of her and video,

lots of video of her.

People just fell in love
with this little girl.

Take a look at this little girl.

Who would want to hurt
this little angel?

Cindy: I feel the more
media exposure we have,

the quicker we can
bring Caylee home,

and that's the whole point
of all of this

is to bring Caylee home safely.

Jordan:
From the very beginning,

it was like the perfect
cocktail of intrigue.

Where was Caylee?

You know, America
can think what they want

as long as they continue to look
for my granddaughter.

Early on, a lot of the tips
led to the searches,

and we did a lot of searching
around the Anthony house.

We searched with aviation units.

We searched on horseback.

There came a point
where the Anthonys

called in Texas Equusearch.

Karas: Texas Equusearch
is an organization

of concerned citizens

who will actually parachute
into areas around the country

and help law enforcement.

Female reporter:
Are you working with police?

I have talked
to John Allen today.

I talked to him twice yesterday,

and we are certainly
working together on this,

and we're not going to quit
until Caylee's found.

We're assisting
in any way we can

to bring
our granddaughter home.

When the case became public,

we got over 6,200 tips.

And there were more sightings
of Caylee everywhere.

Literally almost every state
had some sighting.

Somebody believed
that they had seen Caylee

during the Macy's Day Parade.

A lot of people were calling,

people offering advice
and tips and psychics.

Allen: This investigation
was like spending three years

in the "Star Wars" cantina.

I mean, we met just, you know,
a myriad of odd people,

and every week,
something strange would happen.

And we would say
to each other, "Look.

Nothing stranger
than this can happen,"

and certainly,
the following week,

something stranger
would happen.

King: So is the suspicion that
the babysitter kidnapped her?

That's not suspicion.

That's what Casey's
maintained all along.

Savage: So, Casey's story
wasn't exactly adding up.

Things started to develop
that kind of indicated

that potentially
Caylee had died.

King:
A mysterious stain apparently
was found in the trunk.

What might you
read into that?

The decomposition smell
came from something,

and the stain that you mention
is forensic evidence.

I'll tell you, it's going
be the forensic evidence

which is going to crack
this case open.

Allen: After we arrested her
for the child neglect,

we towed the car in,

and when I walked into
the forensics bay

and smelled the car,
it was pretty clear

that a dead body
had been in the car.

Man:
So you saw a stain in the trunk?

Yeah, probably about the size
of a basketball,

maybe just a little bit --
not completely circular.

We had a cadaver dog come in,

and the dog alerted
on the trunk of the car.

They found a hair in the trunk
that the FBI said

had characteristics
of having some decomposition.

The smell, a decomposing hair --
You take one piece,

and it means nothing.

When you put 1,000 pieces
together,

it paints a picture.

Right now, we have
a live shot, breaking news.

There in the backyard

of the home
that was shared by the family,

we have learned that police
are converging in the backyard.

Savage: You're always looking
for windows of opportunity,

when could something
have happened,

so you kind of start
at ground zero.

You start with the last time
that they were seen,

the last place they were seen,
and that was the home.

Fanning: They found one area
that looked like

someone had dug a 12-inch-wide
hole about 5 inches deep

but then gave up.

We don't know at this juncture

whether they are cadaver dogs
or search dogs.

The police decided
to use a cadaver dog.

The dog alerted, and they
started digging up the yard.

Suddenly, there was a new idea.

Was the child's dead body
in the backyard?

It was a possibility.

Banfield:
But they didn't find anything,

so the mystery
just became more intense.

What caused that?

Savage:
It is somewhat indicative

of something
could have occurred there,

but that wasn't
the final resting place.

We knew that we had
to expand our search.

King: So you feel
she is definitely alive?

I believe she was alive

when Casey handed her off
to the babysitter.

At this point,
I just hope to God

that no one
has done anything to her.

Allen:
Really didn't make sense to us

why, you know, this woman
would kill her daughter.

I think once she's found,

then you can tell
everybody what you know,

and you'll be released,

don't you think?

Welcome back to
"How It Really Happened."

I'm Hill Harper.

Caylee Anthony's disappearance
was first reported to police

on July 15, 2008,
but investigators on the case

soon realized
no one in the family

had actually seen
the little girl since June 16th.

Detectives knew their next step.

They had to figure out
what her mother, Casey Anthony,

was doing for those 31 days.

Jordan:
During the time that Caylee
was missing, for those 31 days,

Casey Anthony was pretty much
living life as normal.

Allen: She was hanging out
and partying during this time.

Jordan: Casey had said
she had gone on vacation

but was living kind of
at a flophouse

with four or five other people
her age group

that she knew from
the party scene and the bars.

There has been tremendous debate

about the last day
the girl was seen.

What was Casey doing?

And she says, "Dad," you know,
"I'm on my way to work.

Caylee's going to Zanny's house.

I'll be working late, so we'll
be staying over tonight.

We'll see you guys tomorrow."

Fanning: One of the things
police uncovered,

the night that Casey said
Caylee went missing,

Casey went with her boyfriend,
Tony, to Blockbuster Video

and were renting
a couple of movies.

There's no Caylee,
but she certainly isn't acting

like someone who's bereft,

whose daughter has just died or
disappeared or been kidnapped.

Allen: What we learned was Casey
was telling different people

different things
about where the child was.

The first Friday
after Caylee was last seen,

that's Friday, June 20th,
Casey was working at the club

where her new boyfriend,
Tony Lazarro, worked,

and she was in charge
of the shot girls.

Casey participated
in the hot-body contest.

We had pictures of her dancing
on top of bars with other women.

Velez-Mitchell: She is literally
dirty dancing and grinding

with another woman
on some kind of platform

at this nightclub

where her boyfriend
works as a promoter.

Casey, with her twisted genius
for lying,

somehow takes this wild partying
and grinding and dirty dancing

and turns it into,
"I was investigating

my daughter's disappearance
on my own."

Fast-forward another 10 days
or so, she gets a tattoo,

and it's Bella Vita,
"good life."

When I first heard
about the tattoo, I thought,

"Well, you know, that's --
that's pretty strange."

There's no evidence
that Casey has ever done

any harm to her child.

Woman: Is it possible
that you don't know?

I lived with -- She lived
with me for three years.

I've never seen anything.

Allen:
Really didn't make sense to us

why this woman
would kill her daughter.

I mean, she seemed to have
a pretty easy life.

Velez-Mitchell: Part of the
perplexing nature of this case

is Casey Anthony did not
have a criminal record,

and she had no history
of abusing her child.

Goldenbock: They went
into the home, and they saw,

you know, stuffed animals
and every indication

that Casey was a doting mother.

Jose Baez,
you're Casey's attorney.

What's your read
on this case?

Well, my read on this

is that she's basically
being prosecuted for a homicide

without any evidence,
and the presumption of innocence

has flown out the window,
and that really scares me.

Good morning.

So once Casey is brought in
and is being held in jail,

her family comes to see her.

Savage: Casey obviously knew
they were being recorded,

and she was cryptic
with some of the things

in which she was
trying to convey.

Passwords?

Any meaning
behind the passwords

that would be clues
to any of this?

Yes.

I'll let you elaborate
if you want to.

If not, I can move on.

I think they -- Casey,

I think everybody wants
an end to all of this.

Oh, of course.

I think once she's found,

then you can
tell everybody what you know,

and you'll be released,

These jailhouse visits
that are recorded

also gave us a window into
what's going on in the family.

I want to take
your pain away from you,

so, you know,
you can tell me anything.

I know that, Dad.

Allen:
Early on, the Anthony family,

George or Cindy, one brought up

that the pool ladder wasn't
where it was supposed to be

and that a gate was unlatched.

Karas: The Anthonys
had a backyard pool.

It was an aboveground,
round pool,

and you needed a ladder
to get up and into it.

And Caylee loved the water,

so, you know, they suggested
that perhaps she drowned.

Someone just said that Caylee
was dead this morning,

that she drowned
in the pool.

That's the newest story
out there.

Surprise, surprise.

She really didn't act like
she was giving it any credence,

which was surprising,
given the direction

that the case ultimately took
in the courtroom.

At different points in time,

the Anthonys cooperated
to varying degrees.

I mean, there were times where
they seemed to want to help us,

and there were times
where they seemed to

want to prevent us
from learning the truth.

Man:
Do you believe in your heart
that she's hiding something?

Mm-hmm. Oh, yes.

Is my daughter
not telling the truth?

Yeah. She knows a lot more
than what's going on.

When she was gone
for 31 days,

didn't you think
that was a little nuts?

No, not really.

I think what's nuts

is for people to speculate

on things that they don't know
the whole truth.

There was tension
between investigators

and the Anthony family.

One of the things
that I wanted to do

was that I wanted
to polygraph the family,

but they refused,
which I thought was strange,

especially in light of the fact
that a child is missing.

Do I think she might have
got involved in something?

Possibility. I don't know.

Allen: At one point,
George actually contacted us,

wanted to speak with us
without anybody in his family

knowing he was coming
to talk to us.

During that conversation
where he essentially

seemed to pour out
a lot of things to us,

he got sick. He went
into the bathroom and vomited.

We need to have
something to go on.

Mom, I don't have anything.
I'm sorry.

I've been here a month.
I've been here a month today.

Can you understand
how I feel?

Savage:
As things didn't add up,

all things began
to point to Casey

and the way in which
she was acting.

It just --
Things didn't seem right,

so she really became
kind of the focal point

of the investigation.

Man:
What can you tell us, Casey?

Man 2:
Get away! Get away!

I don't think any of us knew
what was to come.

You believe your child.

You put faith in everything,
you know?

Woman: Here we go.
Here we go. Here we go.

Karas: So, on August 21, 2008,
Casey is bonded out.

Woman 2:
Where is Caylee at?

She's wearing
an ankle bracelet.

Casey, did you
kill Caylee?

But she's allowed
out of the jail

where she's been
since July 16th.

[ Reporters clamoring ]

-Casey, what happened?
-Back up. Back up.

It was a crazy scene.

Man:
Get away! Get away!

Casey is bonded out by a
character named Leonard Padilla,

who comes equipped
with a cowboy hat.

Come on! Back up!
Let her!

And he is a somewhat
infamous bounty hunter

who is a big personality.

I believe the baby's alive.

I believe she passed it off
to one of her friends,

"Watch my baby.
I'll be back in a couple days."

That person,
for whatever reason,

is down the road with the baby.

And his theory was,
"I'm going to bail her out.

I'm going to sit her down,

and she's going to tell me
the truth.

I'm going to take care of it."

I find it hard to believe

that a mother of a 3-year-old
child would harm her.

Oh, come on!

Karas: So now she's out, and
she's staying with her parents,

so you have to understand what's
happening in the summer of 2008.

This case is really
catching fire.

Nancy Grace very soon has
labeled Casey Anthony "Tot Mom."

The public couldn't
get enough of that.

People came from
around the country

and would divert part
of their vacations,

instead of going four days
to Disney World and Universal,

they would take one of them
to go to the Anthony residence.

God Almighty will judge
Casey Anthony, not you people.

You are not
without any sin.

It was off the charts.

By this time,
the media presence was huge.

10 or 12 camera teams were
in front of the Anthony home.

It was really something
of a zoo.

Breaking news tonight,
more major bombshells.

I'm a guest host
on "Nancy Grace."

August 29th, I'm doing the show.

We have a producer live
outside the Anthony home

where there are these
massive protests going on,

and all of a sudden,
all hell breaks loose.

We see the cops just swoop in

and drive right up
onto the lawn.

Then they swarm the house.

Astounding breaking news
outside the Orlando, Florida,

home of George
and Cindy Anthony,

inside, Casey Anthony.

At least four cop cars
as well as an unmarked car

showing up moments ago.

Well, we drove to the house,
and, of course,

the entire family was at home,
and we go into the house,

and we explain to them
we're going to arrest her.

Karas: Investigators couldn't
get Casey on murder,

at least not yet,
but they could get her

for forging her girlfriend's
signature on checks.

Casey got re-arrested.

Velez-Mitchell: Then they
lead her out in handcuffs.

We thought, "Oh, my God.

What the hell?
Did they find the body?"

Lance: She is being led away
in what seems to be handcuffs.

The police knew exactly when
the TV shows were going live,

and they would time the arrest

so that they could march her
in front of all these cameras,

and it would be live.

The police knew what they were
going to do tonight.

They planned it out.

They knew everybody
would be here,

and they decided to make
a spectacle of this event.

Should an indictment come down,

Casey will surrender herself.

She's not running from this.

She has never attempted
to run away from the situation.

It's looking more and more
like she's responsible

for her daughter's
disappearance.

We just started
to put things together

starting with the hair
in the back of the trunk,

starting with the fact
that, again,

we had reason to believe
that Caylee was dead,

the fact that that hair
showed death banding.

We were confident that we had
enough evidence moving forward

that even if we had never
discovered the remains of Caylee

that we had enough to actually
prosecute her criminally

and obtain a conviction.

Jordan: The prosecution decided
that Casey Anthony's behavior

was so off the hook

that it had to be the persona
of a potential murderer,

of a woman who was so depraved

that she could kill
her own child.

Fanning: On October 14th,
they pulled the trigger.

They brought her in
as being responsible

for the disappearance
of her child,

and they charged her
with homicide.

A Florida grand jury
has indicted

the mother of missing toddler
Caylee Anthony

on a first-degree murder charge.

There was one big issue.

Little Caylee was still missing.

King: George, why wouldn't
your daughter call you

and say, "Caylee's gone"?

That's really
a good question.

Cindy: From what we understand,
there's been threats

to not only
Caylee's well-being

but also to our
family's well-being.

By?
By the people that have Caylee.

So you think
Caylee was taken.

Your daughter obviously knew
she was taken.

For what purpose?

I'm still trying
to sort that out.

On December 11th,
a call goes in to 911.

My investigator came in
and said they found

what looks to be
a child's skull.

When I received the phone call,
I remember John saying,

"You need to get down here."

The first thing
that went through my mind

was that we've driven past this
100 times.

Just didn't know.

I remember just being nauseous
at knowing

that literally, you were looking
at the remains of a little girl.

It was a moment like very few
I've ever had.

Karas:
George and Cindy Anthony

had been on "Larry King"
the night before.

They were actually, like,
en route back to Florida

when the remains
of little Caylee were found.

Cindy:
They just said that a body
had been found of a small child,

and they didn't know the sex
or anything else.

They couldn't tell us anything.

And that was the longest flight,
you know, we've ever taken.

One of the very first things
that John and I talked about

was, we needed to tell Casey.

Karas: They want to set up
that she kind of, you know,

sees it on her own,
see how she reacts.

So they bring her into a room
where the TV's on,

and it's, like, wall-to-wall
coverage of the search.

You can't hear her,
but you can see her,

and you can just see
she's really upset.

Now, her being upset
can be interpreted two ways.

She's upset because
she believes, "Oh, no.

My daughter's really dead.
Oh, no,"

or she's upset like, "Oh, no.

They found out
where I threw her body."

The remains were found in
a very low kind of wooded area.

Garavaglia: The bones were found
20 feet off the road,

under the vines,
behind a rotten log,

with leaves settled on top

and silt settled
on top of that --

very difficult to see.

We estimated that
it was not inconsistent

with that body
being placed there

in the early parts
of decomposition

soon after it died.

The skull was on a hair mat

and had, clearly, duct tape
still attached to it.

Karas: Actually not attached
to any tissue.

There was no more tissue on
the skull, but there was hair.

It was attached to the hair,
and that -- the duct tape,

appeared to be
in the front of the skull.

Garavaglia: So, the duct tape
is three layers

that go around the lower
half of the skull

and kind of enmeshed
in the hair.

There were four things
found along with the skull.

There was a trash bag.

There was duct tape.

There was
the "Winnie the Pooh" blanket,

and there was a laundry bag,

and these items had a link

to the Anthony home.

King:
How do you explain, Cindy,

the body being found
so close to home?

I can't explain it.

I mean, it's not --
I can't explain it.

I don't know if anybody can
right now.

Velez-Mitchell:
I could not believe that
they hadn't found the body.

It's the most obvious place
to leave a body.

It should have been the very
first place they searched.

How could they have missed it?

It doesn't make sense.

There was extensive searches
done throughout that area.

Texas Equusearch even searched
that same area,

and they didn't find anything.

Texas Equusearch was stymied
by the fact that mid-August,

there was this huge
tropical storm

that left that entire area
underwater.

I was not going to take a risk

on our four-wheelers
and our horses,

our ground searchers
walking through water

that was a foot or two high.

Velez-Mitchell:
They planned to go back, but
nobody apparently went back.

What the prosecution believes
is that everybody thought

that somebody else
had searched that area,

because it was so obvious.

So the police kind of thought
Texas Equusearch had searched,

and some of
the searchers thought,

well, the police had searched.

But nobody did.

We currently are following up
on some information

regarding this
particular location

in which we received
three tips back in August.

Nothing in this case
was straight-arrow, nothing.

It was all so bizarre.

Fanning: The remains
were found by Roy Kronk,

a utility worker
who was out doing his rounds

in the neighborhood.

Velez-Mitchell:
And it wasn't the first time

this meter reader, Roy Kronk,
had tried to tell the police

he thought there was
a dead body right there.

He had called cops
on three different occasions --

August 11th, 12th, and 13th.

Banfield:
After the third call to 911,

someone finally
connected with Roy.

We had a deputy respond
to this location on August 13th.

The deputy actually
went out to the scene,

and when Mr. Kronk indicated
that there was a bag

that he thought
contained remains,

the deputy, for whatever reason,

elected not to go out
and search

to see if they were
actually remains.

Velez-Mitchell:
He was essentially blown off.

Then Roy Kronk doesn't
have anything to do

with the police, at least,
and Caylee's remains

until he calls it in
on December 11th.

Very strange.

The truth is that
had they found the body,

a lot of theories
the defense came up with

would have not existed.

They gave the defense
an opening.

This was the big mistake.

Garavaglia: The manner of death
is an opinion

based on available information,

including examination
of the body,

information from the scene,

as well as
circumstantial evidence.

Based on all of this,

the manner of death
in this case is homicide.

The cause of death
will be listed

as homicide
by undetermined means.

This was a powder keg
that exploded everything.

It looked like it was going
to be an open-and-shut case.

Finding the body
was very significant.

The duct tape
gave the State a theory

as to how her death
may have occurred.

The duct tape --
That's truly the equivalent

of a smoking gun.

Kobilinsky:
There was a very huge
piece of the puzzle missing,

namely what happened
to the child.

How did she die?

Was it suffocation?
Was it chloroform?

Garavaglia:
As soon as we saw that there
were things from her house,

how could this not be
put back to her house?

How could it not
be put back to her?

What they neglected
to think about

is that other people
were in the home.

It wasn't the end.

It was just the beginning
of this case.

Ashton:

One of the most
unbelievable trials.

We knew that this was not going
to be a normal homicide trial.

The devil

but they believe Casey Anthony
saw Zenaida Gonzales' name

on a piece of paper when she was
at the Sawgrass Apartments.

Now, where she got the elaborate
description of Zanny

and Zanny's life is unknown.

in that courtroom?
