ANNOUNCER: Previously on "SAF3--"
I need your help.
My daughter, I can't find my daughter.
Mommy!
Colby.
[screaming]
Run, Colby!
Don't look back.
Run straight ahead.
[coughing]
Help.
I got you.
I got you.
It's OK.
You're safe.
Come on.
I'll protect you.
Dunnigan.
I found Dung.
He's gone.
Alfonso Rivera has third degree
burns over 40% of his body.
He's lucky to be alive.
HAL: I started this team to make sure we'd be prepared
for anything and everything.
I started this team to make sure we'd be prepared
for anything and everything.
I started this team to make sure we be prepared
for anything and everything--
anything and everything.
You need to be accountable.
You need to be accountable.
It's time to get your head together.
It's time to get your head together.
Dunnigan!
Dunnigan!
[theme music playing]
[SINGING] Soon light break the day,
feel the hope rush in our veins.
Arms entwined keep us safe, give strength to love,
not to fade to white light, not safe.
Down to the tide, keep us safe.
White light, keep us safe.
and I will pull you up, and I won't break.
White light, my fate, I will pull
you up even if it pulls me in.
My fate, keep us safe.
Keep us safe.
I'll keep you safe.
I just don't know how you're finding the strength, Lois.
I imagine it's like when you're on a rescue.
You do what you have to do.
Somehow the strength comes.
I want to see John before the service.
We all know this is dangerous work.
We're a different breed.
We eat, dream, sleep what we do.
It's-- it's a part of us.
You know what I think about you, Robertson.
That's why I want you to be a part of this team.
It's a team I would lead in the battle anytime, anywhere.
When we go on a rescue, I can't promise
that we'll all come back alive.
What I can promise you is that when
we faced nature's disasters of fire, water, and air,
I'll be the first in and the last one out.
And in the creed of the military institutions
and agencies that we serve, I will leave no one behind.
Dead or alive, we'll all come home together.
Hey, Texas.
Hey.
Mrs. D made fresh blueberry muffins.
She's so precious.
She's going to miss Hal as much as anybody.
Yeah.
You know he was always good to her,
taking our blood pressure every day.
Yeah.
It just all feels like a bad dream I can't wake up from.
Yeah, I know what you mean.
I keep expecting him to walk through that door,
giving us those famous three words--
do it smarter.
I never thought I would actually miss those words.
Right.
I guess we should probably head out.
Yeah.
I'll get Chase.
Chase, it's time.
[gunfire]
HAL: John!
Yeah.
Come on.
Let's go, Buddy.
Let's get out here.
You're just who I needed to see about now.
You look lovely.
Hal loved me in this color.
He said it suited my complexion.
I can see that.
Lily picked me up, and I wanted to stop
by and see Alfonzo on the way.
You're amazing, Lois.
Even at a time like this, you're thinking of someone else.
How you holding up?
He just wanted to be cremated, John.
No casket, no fanfare.
He left me detailed instructions in case something
like this should ever happen.
Why am I not surprised.
I can see him now writing up every detail
in that journal of his.
We all just need to honor him, have some sort of closure.
I just can't stop thinking about it.
Time.
He wanted his ashes dropped at sea, Johnny.
Don't worry.
I'll take care of it.
May I?
We're all here to honor the life of Harold Robert Dunnigan--
lifeguard, firefighter, SEAL, husband, mentor.
To me he was just Hal.
When I tried to imagine what I might say or today,
all I could come up with were questions.
How do you honor a man who changed your life?
How do you sum up a life so fully lived?
In a few choice words, Hal had hero blood in his veins.
He lived to serve.
Hal believed in the bond of men and women
who served together as a team.
He believed that everything we do
we do it for the person on the right of us,
person on the left.
Hal and fellow fireman Alfonso Rivera
heroically answered a call in the Catalina fire last week.
It's because of Hal's god-given instincts and Rivera's selfless
act [inaudible] is alive here today.
Saf3 was Hal's brainchild.
He understood the importance of interagency cooperation.
Being a SEAL, working at fire, water, and air,
the five divisions come together to improve life-saving efforts.
Hal handpicked each one of us.
HAL: So that's it, huh?
You're just going to quit?
I had no idea what I was getting into.
HAL: Why are you here, Maddox?
Here for yourself or someone else?
Because if you're here for your parents
or impress your boyfriend, well, then you should quit.
It's too tough.
This is what you want, well then you better man up.
Moment I saw you in this camp, I knew
there was something special about you, something
that most people don't have.
At the end of the day, we all have to be
responsible for something.
We got to have a purpose.
That's what gives meaning to life.
But if you quit now, well, you gotta live with that decision.
That's your call.
Just better make sure it's the right one.
But if you stay, you better be ready to stand
firm with no fear.
That's the only way you'll survive in this line of work.
JOHN: Hal knew that when we gathered around him
to plan to rescue, we were going out there
to face life and death stakes and aware of the harsh reality
any one of us may not come back.
And when his shift was over, he loved going home.
Hal won't be going home again.
I'm saying goodbye to my hero, my friend, father I never had.
[playing trumpet]
Madam, this flag is presented on behalf
of our grateful nation as an expression of appreciation
for the honorable and faithful service
rendered by your loved one.
Just think, Rivera doesn't even know yet.
It's going to be brutal for him.
Hey.
Dr. Natterson, how's he doing?
He's healing remarkably well.
Skin grafts are taking, infection's under control.
I think we're about ready to take
him out of the induced coma.
When you do, will you let me know?
I wanna be here.
Doesn't know about Dunnigan.
I'd like to be the one to tell him.
Of course.
Hey, buddy.
So help me, I don't know why this happened.
You, Dunnigan, I keep thinking there
was something I could've done.
We're all gonna be here for you every step of the way.
Hey, Charley.
What you got there for us, girl?
Espresso shakes for everyone.
Nice.
Malibrew, I love those.
Yeah?
It's a little business I started in high school.
Got three carts now.
Seems like people love service and everyone loves coffee,
so I figured a cart that delivers coffee and shakes
would be fun.
OK, so wait a minute, let me get this right.
So you invented Malibrew?
Mmm hmm.
Girl, you're 18 years old.
You just graduated high school.
Genius.
Hey, where's Captain Eriksson.
Oh, he's at the hospital checking on Rivera.
I'll probably go later today.
Yeah, I was thinking of making a chart
so we can all take turns being there.
Great idea.
Charley, these are so good.
Hey, yeah, Chase, I think Charley could give you a run
for your money in the kitchen. - [groans]
I think someone's feeling a little threatened.
[laughs] He sensitive.
Hey, how's Rivera?
The doctor wants to bring him out
of the induced coma in the next few days,
so we want to be ready to help him get through this.
Hey, Charley, thanks for coming down to be part of the review.
I mean, since you are part of the rescue now,
rookie lifeguard, I thought it was important.
I'm happy to help in any way I can.
And, sir, I've known for years I wanted
to be a lifeguard but never more than at Dunnigan's service,
hearing your words.
I just can't believe they're having an investigation
so soon.
Well, they always do it as soon as possible.
TEXAS: Well, yeah, especially if there's
a fatality or a serious injury.
I'm just sorry we have no time for our own internal review
yet.
I was trying to get us a little more time.
I wish the panel was as sensitive.
Now who's interviewing us?
It's incident review board from the fire department.
It's made up of other battalion chiefs.
TEXAS: You see, Charley, they're looking
to see if there was any negligence or violations
of the safety rules.
Yeah, one of these guys would do anything
to shut this program down.
He'd like to take our funds to use
it for his own pet projects.
So you guys just treat it like one of my debriefs.
OK, you guys ready? - Yes, sir.
All right, let's go and get changed.
This is a formal hearing, and what you say will be recorded.
I know you've all suffered a great loss.
I'm sorry you have to go through this.
Just try to relax and answer my questions as best
you can remember.
A line of duty death has occurred.
It's important for us to learn where each person saw.
I will start by stating on the record that a man is dead
and another almost died on a Saf3 effort.
No matter the outcome here today, there
will be a mandatory psychological evaluation
for each member of your team including you.
Let's start from the moment you jumped off the helicopter.
It says here in the incident review you all
knew where the safe zone was.
Is that true?
Yes, sir.
Dunnigan had determined RP.
GALLAGHER: Who was IC?
Dunnigan.
GALLAGHER: Was IC always in communication and command
with each member of the team?
Dunnigan!
Where was Dunnigan at that time?
Where it was Dunnigan at that time?
Dunnigan.
Dunnigan.
[distorted voices]
[screaming]
What happened next?
Where was each member of your crew?
What happened next?
Where was each member of your crew?
Come on.
I'll protect you.
Why was no one in communication with Dunnigan?
Why did Dunnigan go back in?
If proper procedures were followed,
Dunnigan would not have gone back in.
Was it clear to everyone who was in command?
[beeping]
Calem and Sanders, get in the air.
Get all video up and online.
You're my eyes.
Robertson, get on the water, call Chief Bartlett.
Ask him to pull guards from the towers, rendezvous
in the water for pickup.
Yes, sir.
Maddox, court me in for the fire department.
Get the engine.
Go all available backup 88, 70, 71s.
Yes, sir.
Daly, get ready to triage in the water evac by air.
Meet you at the IC.
Yes, sir.
What's going on here?
We're in the middle of a hearing.
That is not a job for Saf3.
That's regular fire department.
That was the fire department.
Chief Topar needs us now.
[sirens wailing]
Close PCH northbound to Temescal, southbound to Sunset.
Yes, sir.
Yes, sir.
Move that engine into position and cable off the car.
Yes, sir.
Sea rescue, this is Eriksson.
Request Robertson and Daly to hit the water
to access the situation.
I don't want anyone else on that beach.
Taylor, I need to see the situation inside that car.
Who's in there and their condition?
Copy that.
I'm at vehicle 1.
Very weak pulse, possible neck injury.
This is Taylor.
We've got eyes on the victim in the SUV on the cliff.
Are you getting the live feed.
JOHN: Copy that.
We have a visual.
It looks like he needs some help.
Should we swing the ladder over the car
and try to get him out?
JOHN: Even with an SUV cabled off,
the ground can still give way injuring the driver.
Help!
Help!
[speaking spanish]
Sir, sir!
I don't speak Spanish.
Calm down.
I'm going to get you out of there.
Calm down.
Calm down.
I'm in the second car.
[inaudible] position directly under the car on the cliff.
Four victims-- two adults, two minors.
Injuries, door won't open.
I need c-collar basket, jaws of life, and back up, sir.
Go.
Lifeguard backup is on the way.
Taylor, I need you to airlift jaws
of life, spreader, and cutter to Robertson on the beach.
Roger that.
[speaking spanish]
Hey, I do not speak Spanish, but if you calm down,
we will get you out of here.
OK.
Jaws of life en route.
Pick up on beach 20 yards due east
to avoid disturbing Hillside.
Roger.
I'll go for the jaws.
Maddox, get me double harness.
Yes, sir.
Taylor, pick me up and take me over to that car.
Roger that.
CHASE: Get back.
C-collar.
There you go.
Everything's going to be OK.
You have command.
As soon as I'm cleared, get the paramedics down here.
Yes, sir.
Ready.
Roger that.
Hold on.
I'm going to get you out.
Are you injured?
No.
All right, now carefully slip this harness over your head
and under your arms and move toward the window slowly.
[inaudible]
I'm getting you down, OK.
[inaudible]
Good job.
Thanks.
Lifeguard reported there's a baby in the car.
Mom is now conscious.
There's a baby in the car.
I looked.
I didn't see anyone else in the car.
Hey, I think I got something.
I found the baby.
I'm bringing her to you.
The scene last night on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu
looked like it was right out of a Hollywood blockbuster
when three cars collided, sending two over the cliff.
Thanks to Saf3, a new division of the Malibu Fire Department,
the res--
Stop eating them all.
It's not going to be any left.
It's how I like them best, hot off the griddle.
Well, I'd like you to sit down and have
them with butter and syrup.
Pancakes are so good, they don't need butter and syrup.
Besides, I don't have time to sit down today.
You're such a crazy.
You mess everything up.
REPORTER: The scene last night on the [inaudible] coast--
I'll be in Dunnigan's office.
REPORTER: Was right out of a Hollywood blockbuster
when three cars collided, sending two over the cliff.
Thanks to Saf3-- - We're famous.
REPORTER: A new division of the Malibu Fire
Department, the rescue went off without a hitch
with no serious injuries.
Our rescue last night made it to the news.
They're saying it went off without a hitch.
Right.
I thought I told you to get me ice.
I can barely move.
My back's killing me.
Ah, you little wussy.
Look, man, why don't you start doing some deadlifts,
OK, so we can strengthen your back?
[giggling]
That's what I'm saying.
OK.
- All right. - Oh, yeah.
All right.
Where's Robertson?
Huh?
Where's Robertson?
Lily.
Hey, Charley.
Hey, I was going to stop by headquarters after work,
but I saw you running so I figured
I'd give this to you now. - Oh, yeah.
What is it?
Well, since you got called on to rescue yesterday,
I figured you wouldn't have time,
so I went ahead and made a chart sort of like the fireman use.
It's color coded, and each color represents one of us.
So we can take turns visiting Rivera.
That was so sweet of you.
Thank you.
No problem.
Hey, you're Rivera's partner, right?
Yeah, for six years now.
He's an amazing man.
Thought so.
I went ahead and gave you a little bit more time
than I gave the others.
Thank you, Charley.
You're welcome.
- I'll see you later. - See ya.
Thank you. Bye.
[music playing]
[SINGING] The day is home to fate, and life
entwined to keep us safe.
And now the time is gone in flesh and bone
as the white light fades again.
The world is one less seed, and still it
swells to keep us free.
Though we are fragile and strong, we were never alone,
and it's silent here again.
I will pull you up even if it pulls me in.
I can lift you up even if I break again.
I will keep you safe even if it pulls me in,
and the white light fades again.
I wondered how any of us would ever find the strength
to watch that footage.
COLBY: Mommy!
I hear something.
COLBY: Help!
It's Colby.
He heard her.
That's why he went back in.
That was Hal.
Hero to the end.
Lois, I'm sorry.
I don't mean to disturb you.
John, let me in.
Take your time.
I know how hard this must be for you.
I was hoping to find house wedding ring.
It wasn't on his finger.
I know he used to take it off to row,
and John said he always put it in here.
Let me help you look.
Lily just told me you heard Colby's
voice in the video feed.
Is that why Dunnigan went back in?
Sir, I've been going over yesterday's rescue
again and again, and there's been a couple of things
that's been on my mind.
Now, first I realize we do need someone on this team
who speaks fluent Spanish.
Without a doubt.
TEXAS: And secondly is I looked in that SUV.
I saw a duffel bag in the backseat
and I should have looked closer.
Look, you remember of this team.
People count on you in life and death situations.
There's not a lot of room for error.
But you're also human.
You don't always get it right.
We'll do it different next time.
Now in this business when everybody goes home alive,
it was a good day.
Yes, sir.
I'm sorry to cut this short, but
there's something I gotta do.
Hey, if anyone finds his wedding
ring around headquarters, please let Lois know.
Hal loved this team.
It's such pride in every one of you.
It's a hard time for all of us, but I know he'd want you
to know it's OK to have fun.
[SINGING] Can ya, can you do it.
We'll do it for you if you do it for me.
I'll do you.
I want more.
I'll do it.
Baby, take your clothes off.
[RAPPING] I made big deals all over the world.
And I pretty much had my choice of girls.
I know you know that I'm pretty cool, so give it up, baby.
Now don't be cruel.
And now I'm thinking that you must be crazy that you
can see that I'm truly amazing.
So what's a bad boy like me to do?
I'm stuck on you like superglue.
[SINGING] More, more, more, uh, uh, yeah.
More, more, more, oh, yeah.
There's never enough of you for me.
You're the only one that can set me free.
You're the only one, baby.
I want more, more--
Well, this is it.
The row we took four days a week for 17 years.
This is the spot we always turned to head back home.
We call it the Church of the Open Sky.
It's the perfect place then.
It's Hal's favorite time of day to be on the water.
Mine, too.
It was a nice thing you did back there.
Get 'em back dancing.
It's what he'd want.
Gallagher, he wants to shut this program down.
I know it was Hal's passion.
I'm gonna fight to keep it alive.
But I want your blessing.
He'd have been so proud.
I was hoping you'd say that.
He's never coming back, Johnny.
What am I going to do without him?
We're just going to have to try
to find a way to keep dancing.
[laughing]
Oh, look.
Everything is going to be OK.
[theme music playing]
[SINGING] Soon light break the day,
feel the hope rush in our veins.
Arms entwined keep us safe, give strength to love, not to fade.
