(Broker)

(Adapted from Miao Juan's novel, "Broker")

(Episode 10)

This is for you.

It's in case you get hurt again.

Thank you.

You'll be my sparring partner from now on.

Can I add you on WeChat?

Sure. My ID is 15827658.

What?

Don't make me repeat myself.

15827658.

I've sent you a friend request.

Accept it.

What's with you today?

Is something bothering you?

Let me ask you.

If your superior...

risked his future to protect you,

would you be touched?

No way.

There's no such fool in the workplace.

I said if.

If so, then I'll be moved.

Then what if...

your superior is a woman?

I guess...

I would be so moved that I'll give her my life.

What kind of person is Qiu Jia Ning?

Why is she so good to Xiao Shan?

Hello. Please stop.

Hey, which house are you going to?

Hello.

I was about to ask you.

The address didn't say which building it was.

Do you know which house it is?

It's Mr. Qiu.

Hold on. Let me call and ask.

Building 108. Go straight ahead.

Thank you.

I'm coming.

Who is it?

Hi, is this Qiu Jia Xin's house?

It's a delivery for her.

Thank you.

I hope you have a good day.

You can give me any unwanted garbage.

I'll help you take it out.

Your service is amazing.

Okay, wait for me.

Here.

Thank you.

What does that mean?

I'm not sure.

Why don't you check the files later?

What about this?

This one?

You need to put these ones together...

and go through them again.

Good morning, Ms. Qiu.

- Morning. - Jia Ning.

Are you feeling better?

Yes.

Ms. Qiu, are you free now?

What's the matter?

Come to my office.

Think about it.

When you pick out clones, you'll come across culture media.

And inside them,

many of them are the residue of linkage fragments.

So...

all of these are false positives.

That was why the sequencing came back with nothing.

If you still don't believe it,

you can use your extracted plasmids as templates...

and try doing a PCR again.

I get it now.

I didn't think of that before, Ms. Qiu.

It's okay. Now you do.

No one ever explains to me basic questions like these.

They only told me to look it up.

A 3-year-old knows 1 plus 2 is 3 .

But to verify this equation,

Chen Jing Run used a cart full of toilet paper.

What appears simple often contains profound laws.

And many seemingly simple operations...

have important details and techniques behind them.

One slipup could affect the whole experiment.

You're so kind, Ms. Qiu.

You're not like what they said at all.

What's wrong?

What did they say about me?

They probably said...

that I'm scheming and cunning.

That was why I harmed Zheng Wei...

and forced Ms. Su to leave.

Did you know about that?

Don't you mind it?

Sometimes,

I think about what happened when I first arrived.

If I could do it again,

perhaps I could have handled things differently.

You mean...

It doesn't matter.

It's all in the past now.

Don't worry about what others think of you.

Anyway, I think highly of you.

I'm always on your side.

Thank you.

Xiao Xiao.

Can you bring me the lab data from my office?

Okay.

Has your fever gone down?

You should rest at home for a few more days.

It's okay.

Hello, Dr. Qin.

I sent the email.

It's some information for your reference.

We can discuss it after you're done.

Okay.

Dr. Qin?

He seems to be concerned about you.

Is that so?

He seemed to be anxious when you were sick.

Well, he's quite friendly.

And he's good-looking.

Really?

You're such a strange person.

You care about the appearance of cells,

but it's hard for you to recognize a man's handsomeness.

The appearance of a cell determines the success of an experiment.

What does a man's appearance have to do with me?

You're right.

Hey, Xiao Xiao.

What's the matter, Zhu Zhu?

- Big gossip. - What is it?

Human resources just sent me the wrong file.

They withdrew it right away, but I already saw it.

- What is it about? - Payroll.

The document was supposed to be sent to Mr. Wang to be reviewed.

But I happened to see it.

I realized...

that after Qiu Jia Ning is promoted to team leader,

she will be paid more than Mr. Sun.

Why?

Maybe it's because she's a talent from abroad,

so her benefits are better than Mr. Sun's.

But there were no results from this experiment.

Why is she becoming the team leader?

That's why. Mr. Wang is favoring her.

Also,

Qiu Jia Ning was born here.

By right,

only those from out of town would be assigned to a dorm.

But she's an exception again.

But why?

Who knows why she isn't going home when she has one.

Qiu Jia Ning must have all kinds of tricks up her sleeve.

Remind Shi Tou sometimes.

He is too honest.

Okay, I got it.

Thank you, Zhu Zhu.

It's fine. Go on.

Okay.

Thank you.

Right.

Have you checked the plane tickets?

I was just about to tell you.

I've checked a few usual airlines.

There are enough plane tickets for the dates you picked.

You can buy them anytime.

- Economy class? - Yes.

Both economy class and first class are available.

Are you sure?

Yes.

Is there a problem?

No. You may go.

Okay, I'll leave now.

Why do you need to see me so urgently?

I have something to show you.

Here.

(Qiu Yao Ming)

Qiu Jia Ning is Qiu Yao Ming's daughter?

Yes.

How did you know?

I just know.

Don't worry.

I did a clean job this time.

No one will find out.

But don't you think it's strange?

She's from a wealthy family.

Why would she put up with so much in the lab?

Some people...

don't live to pursue material things.

So you're saying Qiu Jia Ning is noble?

I don't believe it.

Why would she get fired from the lab then?

She was fired for a reason.

Did she tell you that?

Of course, she would say that.

Right.

There's one more thing I haven't told you.

This time, Qiu Jia Ning came back,

but she didn't let her family know.

Why?

I couldn't find out the actual reason,

but it's obvious.

Their family is wealthy,

but she chose to suffer in the lab.

She didn't even tell her family anything.

This proves she doesn't get along with her dad.

Mo Li.

Let's stop here.

Why?

I told you, I won't get caught.

The reason I won't let you join the mission...

is not that I'm afraid you'll cause trouble.

I just want to start over with a clean slate.

Xiao Shan.

Do you know, Mo Li?

A person's greatest happiness...

is having the opportunity to choose.

I don't want you to make the wrong choice this time.

Is that true, Zhu Zhu?

It's very true.

I heard from a friend who works at the head office.

How could anyone...

send Jia Ning's dismissal notice to the head office?

Isn't that just cutting off Jia Ning's escape route?

Do you think...

Ms. Qiu will be fired?

Mo Mo, you don't seem to want to part with her.

She's a good person.

Her little tricks can only fool kids like you.

I'm young, but I know all that I should.

Nothing has been decided yet. Why are you two arguing?

My friend also told me this.

Mr. Huang will come to the lab this afternoon...

to ask Mr. Wang about Qiu Jia Ning.

Who is Mr. Huang?

Mr. Huang...

is the CEO of the head office who liaises with our lab.

He usually won't come to the lab...

unless there is an important meeting or a year-end party.

You haven't met him before because you just joined us.

I'm sorry, Mr. Wang.

If there's a need,

I'll explain it to Mr. Huang myself.

Jia Ning, don't worry.

I hired you.

When there's a problem,

I'll take care of it.

Thank you, Mr. Wang.

You're the one who reported her to the head office, right?

What do you mean, Zhu Zhu?

Come on.

You can fool others, but you can't fool me.

But I don't think Jia Ning would be in danger this time.

I don't believe...

the head office won't do anything regarding this matter.

Qiu Jia Ning really thinks she can mess with us.

Didn't you see that she was in Mr. Wang's office all morning?

If it was just Qiu Jia Ning, it'd be the end of the discussion.

But if Mr. Wang is speaking up for her,

that's a different story.

I just don't get it.

What exactly does he value about Qiu Jia Ning?

Why does he keep protecting her?

Sorry, I didn't get the chili.

What do you mean?

Do you think I'm anxious?

I know Mr. Huang will be here this afternoon.

So what?

I am never anxious about anything other than work.

You're right.

You don't know anything besides work.

Is that how you speak to your superior?

You're not just my superior.

You're bad with directions.

And you're afraid of needles.

- Mr. Qiu, this way, please. - Goodness.

Please.

Mr. Wang's office is upstairs.

Dad.

So you know that I'm your dad.

- Why are you... - Mr. Qiu.

- Hey, Mr. Wang. - Hey.

Mr. Qiu.

Why are you here?

- Mr. Huang. - That's right. Huang Jiu Sheng.

Do you two know each other?

- Yes. - Of course.

Mr. Qiu is the star entrepreneur of our city.

My company invited Mr. Qiu...

to bid for our new building project.

But Mr. Qiu was busy with other projects.

I lost my chance to work with him.

I'm sure there'll be another chance.

Mr. Qiu, why are you here today...

at the research and development department of my company?

I'm here for a discussion and to see her.

Mr. Huang, Mr. Wang.

This is my dad.

This is my daughter.

Who would have known?

Jia Ning is actually Qiu Yao Ming's daughter.

What's the big deal?

She's just the daughter of a rich man.

Women's jealousy...

is terrifying.

Who's jealous of her?

He is a well-known and conscientious businessman.

But to you, he's just a rich man.

If that's not jealousy, what is?

The heavens are so unfair.

She's a beautiful and rich woman...

who is also smarter and works harder than you.

Accept your fate.

So what if she's beautiful and rich?

Xiao Xiao isn't bad either.

Am I right?

I'm announcing that from now on,

I'm a fan of Jia Ning.

- All right. - You're crazy.

Mr. Huang.

The dismissal notice did take place.

But I'm sure of this.

Jia Ning is innocent.

If that's the case,

as her dad, I can't just sit back...

and watch my daughter get slandered...

- and falsely accused. - Dad.

- If... - Don't talk about my matters.

Jia Ning is Mr. Qiu's daughter.

And Mr. Wang is defending her with his reputation on the line.

I'll trust you once more.

But this anonymous letter...

has already reached the higher-ups of the company.

If I don't do anything about it,

it will be hard to explain to the board.

Then...

What do you suggest, Mr. Huang?

Dad.

I'm a dad.

I really...

don't want to see my daughter get accused.

All parents are the same.

I understand.

But...

Mr. Huang.

How about this?

Please give me three months.

If I can't move the project forward in three months,

- I'll resign. - Jia Ning.

I think you can do that. All right.

Like dad, like daughter indeed.

Mr. Qiu.

You're blessed...

to have such a daughter.

Here.

(Lab 1)

Dad, this is my office.

It's nice.

It's so comfortable until you've forgotten to come home.

Why didn't you tell me you've been back for so long?

If I had told you the truth from the start,

what would you have done?

I would have brought people with me and flown there...

and made him pay the price.

Who does he think he is?

I knew you would be impulsive, so I didn't tell you.

Outside of the profession, it is a closed book.

Harry's accusations against me...

aren't something that can be made clear...

with just an explanation or response.

So you just let him bully you?

No.

That was why I left that place...

and came to Plan O.

I want to prove to him that he's wrong and I'm right.

Okay, how about this?

I'll talk to Mr. Huang later.

As for your project,

I'll invest some money in it.

What are you doing?

You'll have the right to speak after I've made the investment.

By then, it won't be just three months.

You'll be the one to decide how long it will take.

- Dad. - Okay?

Not everything can be solved with money.

Don't cause any more trouble.

No, I've looked into the pills you're developing.

The final pricing is just thousands of yuan.

I can afford to invest in it.

Thousands of yuan?

Who did you ask?

That's the price of the second pill.

What about the first one?

Twenty million yuan? Sure.

- How much? - Two billion.

US dollars.

What? Are you scared now?

I'm not scared, but that's a lot.

I can't afford that.

Do you think we're a pharmaceutical company?

We're not a small business that you can simply invest in.

Dad.

You started with nothing.

As your daughter,

I can start from zero too.

Trust me.

I like the sound of that.

Hello, Mr. Qiu.

Everything has been arranged.

- Is it done? - Yes.

- Let's go. - What has been arranged?

I've reserved a table at the company's clubhouse.

Invite all your colleagues there.

- No. - Why not?

I'm making connections for you.

Otherwise, someone will stab you in the back again.

Dad, if that happens again,

I would rather be a white mouse.

Go.

Go get them.

This is Hui-style architecture.

Not a single nail was used.

Not a single nail?

Not a single nail.

That's amazing.

Try our signature dishes.

You shouldn't have.

Not at all.

You still have to return to work after this.

So let me make a toast with tea instead of wine.

Thank you, everyone.

- Thank you. - Thank you.

All right.

Well,

Jia Ning left for abroad when she was young.

So she's not well-versed in the ways of the locals.

She has very little social experience.

That's why she's naive and kind.

If there's anything she's lacking in,

please understand.

Especially Mr. Wang.

All right?

You're too kind, Mr. Qiu.

Jia Ning has brought a new atmosphere to our lab...

since she joined.

I should be toasting to you instead.

You've raised a wonderful daughter.

Goodness.

To be honest,

I hardly raised Jia Ning.

When she said she was going to study at Princeton,

I told her there are so many good local schools.

Why would you go all the way to the States to study?

Sir,

Princeton is one of the Ivy League schools.

We can't even go there if we want to.

That was why I let her.

Right?

Since she's good at studies,

I thought I would support her.

I looked for people to write her a recommendation letter.

But look, in the end,

she didn't go to Princeton,

but a small country in Europe.

Wasn't she just going against me?

Dad, eat up.

Here are some mushrooms that you like.

If Jia Ning had gone to Princeton,

she could have already been under my tutelage.

But it's the same now.

- Am I right? - Yes.

Every encounter in the world is just a reunion after a long time.

Hear, hear.

These are cultured people.

Cultured people.

Even their summary is on a different level.

All right. Anyway...

That's just one thing.

Please take care of Jia Ning.

All right? Thank you in advance.

- Thank you. - Thank you.

I'm so full.

I know.

You ate the most.

You cleared every dish they served.

I hadn't even moved my chopsticks.

Please.

Finishing them is the most basic respect for food.

Okay, have a seat. Mo Mo, serve some food.

Qiu Jia Ning is smart, pretty, and hardworking.

She also keeps a low profile.

I'm liking her more and more.

Who do you think wrote that anonymous letter?

Why are you looking at me?

It wasn't me.

Of course, I know it wasn't you.

I'm just asking.

You do experiments with Jia Ning every day.

Did you notice if she has offended anyone?

She has offended more than a few people.

Is it surprising that she was reported?

This is how you do it.

If it's not placed properly,

it might affect the result.

So be careful.

For this, let me know when the time comes.

- I think... - Do you need help?

Are your cells already laid out?

Yes. I've redone it the way you told me to.

Let me see it.

That's good.

Do that from now on.

Go and check...

on the synthesis of isomers that you're in charge of.

Okay.

Do you know who reported you to the company?

Yes.

It was Xie Xiao Xiao.

I know.

Why are you still talking to her in such a pleasant manner?

She only reported the facts to the company.

It's not like I'm being falsely accused.

Your dad wasn't the person I thought he was.

I don't want to talk about personal matters during work hours.

Why?

Actually, I think it's good...

to have such a dad.

Is that so?

Don't you agree?

I don't think so.

To him,

money can solve anything and everything.

That includes your love for your children.

But I don't like that.

That's right.

Money isn't the answer to everything indeed.

But money can remove all your worries...

so that you can focus on your work.

Compared to many people, you're very lucky.

You should thank your dad.

Lucky?

I've thought about dying before.

Have you?

When I was growing up,

my parents got divorced.

I've never seen my mom since then.

That was until I applied to college.

I found out by chance that she was in City A.

So you gave up Princeton and went to City A...

because of your mom?

But my dad doesn't know that.

Because in my house,

bringing up my mom is taboo.

She can't be mentioned at all.

I didn't know why.

That was until I found her.

Are you Tao Si Yi?

No.

Mom.

I'm Jia Ning.

You're mistaken.

I'm Jia Ning.

Mom.

I've been looking all over for you.

Can't you understand Chinese?

You're mistaken! I'm not your mom!

Get out!

Do you know?

In ancient times,

only children who were protected by their mom could survive.

And the reason why human beings can reproduce for generations...

is because of a mother's instinct.

I've always thought...

she would be just like when I was little.

That she would care for me and love me.

That after so many years,

she would miss me as much as I miss her.

Who knew?

She became a completely different person.

Not only does she not like me, but she also hates me very much.

Why do you think that is?

Because of this,

you thought about dying?

That's right.

I couldn't accept it at the time.

But then I met someone.

He told me,

"If you're not afraid to die,"

"then you shouldn't be afraid to live."

Some people are inside! Let's go!

Stay still.

Remember.

If anyone asks,

tell them you didn't see anyone.

Otherwise...

Kill me.

I have no reason to live anymore.

If you're not afraid to die,

then you shouldn't be afraid to live.

Zhou Xiao Shan.

What are you thinking about?

You.

The experiment you made us do.

It's almost time.

Let's go home.

I'm hungry.

Let's go eat.

Sure.

It's on me. I know a nice place.

Ms. Qiu, you're here.

Mr. Wu.

Just call me Wu.

This is...

He's my subordinate.

Subordinate?

I thought it was over for Dr. Qin.

You're mistaken.

Qin Bin and I are just friends.

Well, I'm sorry.

All right, I'll stop.

Table for two. This way, please.

Let's sit here.

What would you like to eat?

Please keep it simple. It's just the two of us.

Okay, I'll get it prepared.

Are you close to the owner?

Not really.

He's a friend of Qin Bin.

So this is where Qin Bin brought you.

The place is nice.

But it feels a little empty.

How did you find this place?

It's near our park.

So we picked this place last time.

You're quite hygienic.

You're like a girl.

Is that so?

At least I'm not a girl like you.

I just don't want to waste my time on trivial matters.

When you get sick,

it won't be a trivial matter anymore.

Don't forget.

You've just recovered.

Zhou Xiao Shan.

Do you need a girlfriend?

It depends on who's asking.

If it's you, then yes.

Qiu Jia Ning.

Are you planning to ask me out?

You're overthinking it.

I'm asking for my sister.

She's a nag just like you.

I think if you two are together,

you would get along well.

A couple is about two different people being together.

Two similar people aren't that suitable.

Qiu Jia Ning.

With all due respect,

the taste...

is just mediocre.

Keep it down.

Actually,

Mr. Wu's mom was Qin Bin's patient.

He spent all of his savings...

on his mom's treatment.

Qin Bin thought...

that Mr. Wu had a tough time.

So he took out some of his own savings...

and helped him open this restaurant.

Sometimes, he would help take care of his business.

Is that so?

I didn't know he was such a saint.

Stop speaking so weirdly.

He is a doctor.

We should learn from his kindness.

Okay.

As you wish.

Have some beef.

I eat potatoes.

Potatoes.

Here, Ms. Qiu.

I'm sorry, I only found one umbrella.

Thank you.

I'll give you back when I come again next time.

There's no rush. Please take care.

Thank you.

Come closer.

Your shoulder is getting wet.

Are you free tonight? I want to treat you to dinner.

- What for? - I have no motive.

My disciple is always tired from work.

It's a reward.

- Really? - Yes.

There's a Sichuan restaurant nearby that serves good food.

Let's go for that one.

So you like Sichuan cuisine?

Does your sister like it too?

I knew it.

You're just trying to ask my sister out through me.

No. Well...

Your sister helped me with my thesis.

So I thought why don't we have her join us?

It's more like I'm the one joining you two.

No. What do you take me for?

I just want to buy you a meal.

The main purpose is to treat you.

Okay.

Even though it's not true, it's quite nice to hear.

Don't worry, Dr. Qin.

Once my sister arrives, I'll find an excuse to leave.

I've already paid my dues.

If you still can't get her,

you only have yourself to blame for your incompetence.

Don't worry.

Once it's done,

I'll make it worth your while.

Just wait for the day you call me your brother-in-law.

Quick, you can do it now.

- No. - Call me your brother-in-law.

- No! - Call me your brother-in-law!

No!

Sister-in-law!

Are you asking to get hit?

Hello, Jia Xin?

Hey, Jia Ning. What are you doing?

I'll buy you dinner tonight.

Sure.

What are you wearing today?

Today? What's the matter?

I'm just asking what you're wearing.

Forget it. It's no use asking.

Your clothes are so plain.

What? Do I need to dress up to eat with you?

It's complicated.

I'll get off work early today and pick you up.

Okay.

Okay.

I've already informed her.

She'll be here soon.

Please wait here.

Okay. Thank you, miss.

Jia Xin?

- Zhou Xiao Shan. - Are you here for your sister?

Let me ask you something.

Is my sister busy lately?

It's all right. Just regular experiments.

Then can you promise me something?

What is it?

My mentor will go on a date with my sister tonight.

You know how my sister is.

Nothing is better than doing experiments.

If there's a problem,

she would drop everything and go to the lab immediately.

I'm sure you don't want her to stay single, right?

Please.

Zhou Xiao Shan.

You're here too.

It's only 4pm. Why are you so early?

It's already late.

Jia Ning, you're so underdressed.

I think it's fine.

No, you'll have to change.

This won't do.

Where are you bringing me to that I need to change?

I'll take you to enjoy heavenly cuisine.

Sichuan cuisine and hot pot.

Then I should be able to wear anything.

Why do I need to dress up?

That's not what I meant.

You have to dress like...

What? To dance?

No, Jia Ning.

Come on.

Zhou Xiao Shan.

Keep an eye on the cells in the petri dish.

If there are any problems...

There won't be any problems.

You need to learn to let go.

Trust your subordinate.

Right, Zhou Xiao Shan?

What do you know?

Don't worry, Qiu Jia Ning.

I'll keep an eye on them.

Thank you.

Let's go.

What about your clothes?

I'll get changed too.

I just want you to look good.

Why aren't you wearing a dress?

Dr. Qin!

Here.

This hot pot place is amazing, Jia Ning.

Hi, Jia Ning. We meet again.

You're here too, Dr. Qin?

My mentor is treating us today.

Don't be shy.

- How can I let him? - It has to be my treat.

I've taken too much of your time because of my article.

Exactly.

Have a seat.

Jia Ning, see what you want to eat.

Order anything you want.

Hello.

Okay, I'll be right there.

All right, bye.

What's wrong?

Something urgent came up at the hospital.

I have to go.

Sure, go ahead.

Let's eat together next time then.

No.

Since you're already here, just eat.

Eat my share as well.

Dr. Qin, take good care of my sister.

Don't worry. Take care.

- I'll get going. - Go on.

- Jia Xin. - Jia Ning.

Have a seat.

Let's order.

Okay, then.

Have a look at the menu.

They make the best food here.

I'm leaving, everyone.

- Bye. - Bye.

Zhou Xiao Shan.

Why did Ms. Qiu get off work so early today?

She...

She had somewhere to go.

Is she going on a date?

Are Ms. Qiu and Dr. Qin really dating?

It's time to eat again.

What should we eat?

Are you still eating?

You're turning from a pig to an elephant.

Did I eat your rice?

Jia Ning.

At what age did you leave for abroad?

Sixteen.

If I'm not mistaken,

the States is the most advanced when it comes to biopharmaceuticals.

Why did you choose to go to City A?

It's a long story.

Anyway, I have my reasons.

I've been there too.

Aside from the beautiful scenery,

the donuts were really good.

Right?

Actually, only the locals are used to the local specialties.

I love donuts.

Did you know?

You're a man, but you have a sweet tooth.

That's something else.
