And at that time, he was just
doing part time at school

and working at night,
sweeping floors.

So then he decided, why not?

TEXAS DALY: So it wasn't
no big patriotic decision

why he served our country?

He loved this country.

My whole family is very
proud to be in America.

But no, it started
with a T-shirt.

When he started boot camp--

oh, I've never seen him so
proud and happy for anything.

He just loved being
part of a team.

He loved his squad, his uniform.

That made him so happy.

So what about you?

What made you join the Army?

It was a way to
get closer to him.

I wanted to see where he had
been, what he experienced,

where he--

you know, what happened
and what he'd been through.

I was very proud to
serve as much as he was.

Well, you guys are always and
forever the American veterans

because of that service.

Today marks the anniversary of
the historic Veterans Day fire.

The event that happened at
the landmark Ocean Bay Hotel

is on record as being the worst
tragedy in Malibu history.

In the wee hours of the
morning on November 11, 2009,

a fire broke out,
with 40 employees

and over 300 guests inside.

Jane, what do you remember
most about the event

five years later?

I remember seeing
the firefighter's face,

seeing his hand
reach out to help me.

[coughing]

[sirens]

Give me your hand.

I remember it
being so hot, I--

[coughing]

I thought I was gonna die.

[coughing]

And Bill, you were
in town for the weekend

to be a part of the annual
Veterans Day commemoration.

Now, among the deceased
were five veterans.

Where were you when
the fire broke out?

I was asleep.

The first thing I remember was
the ceiling falling down on me.

Water was everywhere.

I just didn't know
what was happening.

The next thing I remember was
hearing a firefighter yelling.

[YELLING] Hold on,
sir, I'm coming for you.

And Lily, if it
weren't for you

and your fellow
firefighters, I just--

you saved my life.

[groaning]

Thank you for that.

A tragic event
happened that day.

Too many lives were
cut short, and mistakes

were made, mistakes which
have motivated change.

And all that we're left with
now are stories of courage

and triumph worth remembering
on the anniversary

of this Veterans Day that
will never be forgotten.

I love doing this every year.

It's such a powerful memorial.

Hey, thanks for

Yeah, I had no
idea they did this.

It started in 2004.

We call it Arlington West.

It's our little tribute to
veterans and their sacrifices.

So whatever happened
with you and loverboy?

reunited with her family,

it sort of reminded
me how important

it is to tell the people you
love how much they mean to you.

So I wanted to tell you,

most important men

in my life, my dad
and Captain Dunnigan,

both died fighting fires.

So I guess I feel that a
little like how May feels.

And maybe it's an
irrational fear.

And I know it's
hard to understand,

since I'm a firefighter.

But it's just too much risk
to take on someone I loved.

No, it makes perfect sense.

I mean, especially
knowing that your dad died

the same way, and Dunnigan.

Yeah, I mean, it's his career.

I can't ask him to change.

I can't argue with that.

It's reality.

I mean, look at what
we're looking at.

How did you think of those?

She had all these
old handkerchiefs,

and I thought it would
make a great prayer flag.

We did this for the
soldiers in Vietnam.

So each name represents
somebody who died in the fire,

right?

Yes.

I wanted to do it as a
symbol of remembrance.

You know, I'd like
to do something too.

Maybe I'll document each
of their stories on video.

compared to someone I saved.

one of my really good friends--

they died in that fire.

Yeah.

I was on vacation in
Hawaii when it happened.

And crazy as it sounds, I just--

I just wish I was here.

No, no, no, it doesn't
sound crazy at all.

[WHISPERING] No, it doesn't.

If there was one
rescue that I will

want to erase from my memory, it
would be the Veterans Day fire.

It was the perfect storm.

The sprinklers malfunctioned.

The fire alarms didn't go off.

Total chaos.

Six engine companies.

They were so worried
about putting the fire out

that none of them took the time
to search for victims that were

trapped below street level.

I mean, people started
drowning because there

was no proper drainage.

And by the time any of us
knew what was going on,

it was almost too late.

Seeing the shock and
fear on their faces,

knowing that they were
about to drown in a fire.

Four people drowned
in that basement.

Total dysfunction.

There should've been one--

one central command to
coordinate everything.

I mean, the firemen--

they were sending people
to the roof to evacuate.

But the heat from the
fire kept the helo

from getting too close.

Two people burned to death and
three others jumped to theirs.

My gosh!

It's just so horrible.

Yeah, tell me about it.

I can't believe it's been
five years since the fire.

I know you don't
like to talk about it,

but what you did that
day saved a lot of lives.

I feel like nothing
good came out of that day.

I'm still angry I
lost so many friends.

Hey, we're all angry.

Captain Dunnigan told me when
things were at their most

chaotic, especially
for the firefighters,

you stepped in and took control.

Our digital radios were down.

[sirens]

Our mayday system
malfunctioned, which should have

alerted other engine companies
that one of their own

was in trouble.

Captain Dunnigan was first in
to set up triage and report,

but he couldn't.

And I didn't know
what else to do,

so I just ran to tell
everyone what was going on.

Those faulty radios
caused so much loss.

[sirens]

Because of you, everyone
knew what was going on.

You changed the
way we communicate.

No, Captain
Dunnigan starting Saf3

changed the way we communicate.

You know, he used
his outrage over what

happened to change procedure.

He did something.

You know, Dunnigan said you
were a real hero that day.

JARED TAYLOR: I was making
water drops on the hotel.

It was frustrating being in
the air, seeing all the chaos

and not being able
to do more to help.

I did what I could
with what I had.

I just made a drop, when I saw
two guys trapped on the corner

section of a roof.

Help!

JARED TAYLOR: The
last thing they

needed was more water on there.

What they needed was someone
to get them off of it.

They had nowhere to go.

Grab it!

JARED TAYLOR: So I
lowered the water basket.

Grab it!

I got it, I grabbed it.

[sirens]

[interposing voices]

JARED TAYLOR: One of the
guys helped the other in.

- No, no, no!
- Don't worry about me!

- What about you?
- No!

JARED TAYLOR: Then he motioned
for me to lift him out.

I made it to safety with
him, but the other guy--

when I got back,
it was too late.

Talk about the ultimate
sacrifice for a friend.

I just wish I could
have done more.

and I wasn't allowed on site.

They were transporting all
the victims to the hospital.

It was procedure back then.

Now it's all changed.

By the time they
got to the hospital,

it was too late for
so many of them.

It should never have happened.

Yeah, that's one of
the main reasons why

Dunnigan created Saf3,
so nothing like that

would ever happen again.

back all the helplessness
