some of the most

respected airmen in their day.

Yeah, they changed
everything for black soldiers.

I mean, they proved
that they were no

get my hands on about World

that's burning 20 miles out.

We were called in to assist
the smokejumping unit.

Our firebreak will provide a
safe exit for the smokejumpers

if the fire turns and act
as a last line of defense.

What are smokejumpers?

They're the real deal.

These guys are
firefighters that jump

out of planes into wildfires.

You guys might not know this,
but one of my first summer jobs

was working in a
smokejumping unit.

Before you went to Swiftwater?

Mm-hmm.

And what I learned
is that smokejumpers

and hotshot crews--

they're smart, tough, and
they're very well-trained.

Mm-hmm.

Everyone grab their Pulaskis
and let's start digging, huh?

This place already looks like
it's been cleared out before.

Yeah, a hotshot crew came
in about 2 and 1/2 years ago

and cleared this path.

But as you can see,
it's been a while.

It looks like we have
our work cut out for us.

[intense music playing]

Yep.

I know you and Captain
Eriksson were originally

supposed to go together.

But I'm kind of
glad he had to bail.

[laughs]

hold or stop a forest fire?

Well, I'm glad you asked
that question, Graci.

Lily, what three things
are essential to any fire?

Heat, fuel, and oxygen.

That's right.

And in a wildfire, you can't
control heat and oxygen,

but you can control the fuel.

You see, smokejumpers
and hotshot

crews make a clear
path to anything

that can be used as fuel.

But fire can't burn dirt, so
we create an impassible line.

So this is what you did
all summer, dig ditches?

[laughs] Yes.

And after my first
week, girl, I had

blisters on top of my blisters.

GRACIELA VEGA:
What made you want

to work with a smokejumping
crew in the first place?

It's in my blood.

You see, my dad gave me the job.

He was a smokejumper.

And so was my grandpa.

And my great-grandpa, well, he
was actually one of the first.

You see, he was part of the
first all black airborne unit,

the 555th.

But the 555th couldn't fight in
World War II because of racism.

Mm.

Racism and the
military are two words

that should never go together.

Agreed.

But that's just how things
used to be back then.

Yeah, they sent the
Triple Nickles out west,

away from the front line.

And while they
were over there,

they put out a bunch of
wildfires, which entail

got them the nickname
"smokejumpers."

LILY MADDOX: If smokejumping
is in your blood,

why did you end up at
Malibu Fire in Swiftwater?

I wanted to save lives.

You see, I wanted to be the
guy who went in and saved all

the stranded hikers
and leave putting

out the fires to the hotshot
crews and the smokejumpers.

Well, since you're the expert,
how's our firebreak looking?

Um-- [laughs]--

a couple holes here and there.

But remember, this is
just a backup just in case

the wind shifts and the
fire comes this way.

That way, the firejumpers
can run our firebreak

and escape safely.

But what you're saying is
this might really need to work.

A slim chance, yes.

But last I heard, the fire
was on the other side.

But we all know how
fast things can change.
