BMXs, we both got given
these BMXs one Christmas.

His was black, mine was white,

but I wanted the white one,

because it meant I got to clean it more.

'Cause of the dirt, and in
the winter, after school,

we couldn't play golf
because it was too dark

and there were no lights on the course,

on our local course, so instead we would

race through the village on our BMXs

and we were always racing,
always winning, always losing.

And one day, my heart raced too fast.

And they found that I had HCM,

(Motorcycle whizzing)

my heart couldn't take the race,

which is difficult, as a younger brother.

When it came to golf,

if I got nervous playing, too nervous,

which I did, it meant I couldn't play.

So after a long time of
trying to persuade my family

that my heart could take
it and I could take it,

I took the bag, and we
vowed to be a team together.

His heart, my mind as my mum used to say,

and my shoulder.

- I still play.

which means the ball doesn't travel as far

in a hurting wind.

normally my seven iron,

it felt more like 330,

which means the wind hurt by about 10%.

So if 177 yards is your seven iron,

and you increase that number
by 10%, you get about 194.

So what's the difference
in distance between clubs?

goes further than a higher?

means you're playing around 194,

left, but only slightly,

How it curves down to the left?

roll with that curve

little pockets of current,

some big, like a wave a surfer can ride,

and some small, like where
a stone would tumble around.

There are uphill and
downhill waves that affect

how far the ball will roll,

like swimming with the
current or against it.

This green comes alive when
the ball rolls along it,

golf gives a voice to the
plants, and the trees,

and the grass, and the wind.

A good golfer can hear those
voices, but a great golfer,

a great golfer listens.

- So which are you?

I love running, I love the freedom of it,

and I love sweating.

I love sweating everything out.

Years of working in
air conditioned offices

have made me really appreciate
a good old fashioned sweat,

and I love my independence.

I was adopted, well,
technically, fostered,

so I love being responsible
for all of my own things,

and making my own decisions,

because I didn't really
have a say in my childhood.

My parents died in a car
crash when I was a baby.

I don't really remember,

and I was with the same foster family

until I left university, but
they died recently, last year,

so I'm on my own, and I'm
learning to live on my own,

I'm still learning to live
on my own, and it's hard.

It's getting better.

I mean, initially, I was
completely terrified.

Actually, I remember, my
first night at university,

I didn't realise that

you could literally do
anything you wanted.

You could make as much
noise as you wanted,

go to bed when you wanted.

And as much as I love my foster parents,

and I did love them like
they were my real parents,

and they really were my real parents,

but I always felt like an
impostor in their home,

like a perpetual guest.

And so I've always liked
to build my own things

and have my own things, so I'd
probably call it Mandeville,

which would be somewhere that
I would have built for myself,

and anyone was welcome.

And when you were in
Mandeville, it was your place.

- And your dad, he taught
you how to play golf?

- He did, yeah, he taught Frank and I;

that was my brother's name.

But I've only got my mum now.

Most of the time, it humbles you.

It's a game of millimetres.

A fraction in either direction

can be the difference
between fairway or rough,

water or land, winning or losing.

The ball launches at more
than 180 miles per hour,

and that speed is generated
entirely by the body.

There's no engine, no gas, nothing.

So when your body is generating that,

your mind needs to stay
calm and in control.

So there has to be a harmony

between body and mind
always, it's essential.

And with Steve, sometimes
the pressure of the occasion

can get to him, and he loses that harmony,

and he can make the wrong decision

in the heat of the moment,
and then he's gone,

and it's, that's it, that's game over.

That's a 180 miles per hour
in the wrong direction.
