Episode 2

Where is Jiaxin?

It's lunchtime.

Do you expect her to work overtime voluntarily?

She's at the canteen. Look at her WeChat moment.

What?

What mistakes did she make again?

No. I scolded her.

It turned out that I wronged her.

You wronged her?

It's impossible for her to go easy on you.

What will do you?

What else can I do?

I admit my mistake and take the beating.

I think

you should just pretend it never happened.

No way. I can't get past it myself.

Jiaxin said something right.

At work,

I'm her mentor.

But we're equal as individuals.

Bye. I'll go look for her.

Wait a second.

I wish you stay safe.

Jiaxin.

This is your favorite dish, sweet and sour pork ribs.

I brought this especially for you.

And our canteen's last bottle of Yakult.

What on earth do you want?

Jiaxin, I blamed you wrongly yesterday.

How can a mentor make mistakes?

My mentor is always right.

Even if he isn't, it's the student's fault.

No. No. No. I was wrong.

I was wrong.

Yesterday, Mr. Zhang told me

that wasn't milk tea. That was cereal.

How come?

It must be milk tea.

I'm always unreliable.

No. No. No. I'm the unreliable one.

I beg for you forgiveness now.

I'm sorry.

Speak up! I can't hear you.

Who's talking?

Are you talking to your own nose?

Are you a mosquito?

I sincerely beg for your forgiveness now.

I'm sorry.

Just a bottle of Yakult and a simple sentence.

And you want me to forgive you?

What are your condition? Name it.

As long as I can do it.

I wanna go to a popular restaurant.

That's fine.

Name it. It's on me.

Whatever I want?

Don't underestimate my spending power.

It's on me no matter how expensive it is.

Fine. I'll stop scaring you.

It's not expensive. 100 yuan per person.

But you can't book in advance.

You have to wait in line.

Waiting takes two hours on average.

On average?

I'm not afraid of waiting in lines.

I...

I think it may disrupt my work.

If I find a scalper to wait in line for me...

Is that okay?

Why don't you find a scalper to eat with me?

- Forget it. Get back to your work. - No.

I'll get in line. I'll do it.

I'll do it. I'll do it myself.

Okay.

Call me when it's your turn. I'll head over there by then.

Okay. I got it. You really...

Then we can get over it? Don't be mad.

This is over?

Put it down.

I'm just helping you check if it has expired or not.

No, it hasn't.

There's a female colleague who joined the lab with me.

I plan on finding a breakthrough from her.

Miss, let me carry these for you.

How can you carry so many?

Let me help you.

- Miss, where? - Let's go.

Over... over there.

Thanks.

Okay.

Thank you.

You're welcome.

What did you buy?

Chunran said there are online sales during Double 11.

So I bought some daily necessities.

There's nothing I can give you.

Maybe I can share some of these with you.

No need.

If you really want to thank me,

take me to dinner.

Okay. I'll buy you dinner.

Let's go.

Get ready.

Have more. The main dish is still on its way.

Go ahead.

There's a main dish?

Here it comes.

Miss. Your dishes have all been served. Enjoy.

Thank you.

Is this a dish?

Pour strong liquor on shrimps.

And it's edible after a few minutes.

It should be ready.

Not bad.

This is so cruel.

I didn't expect you to have a soft heart.

It's fine.

I won't force you if you dare not to eat it.

Who told you I dare not?

How's it?

This taste.

Isn't this just plain shrimp?

Such a waste for you.

I heard that

Miss Su

has started doing the report.

What?

I find it odd.

Mr. Sun is unable to

find the ideal stats however he tries.

How come Miss Su is able to do it?

I find it weird too.

But what a shame.

Mr. Su only allows me to see

this project's basic reports at this stage.

Share with me

if it's convenient for you.

My curiosity is killing me.

Forget it.

I understand it.

What do you understand?

Miss Su must have asked you to be cautious of

the members from Mr. Sun's team.

I don't know how to lie.

What a coincidence!

I don't like listening to lies.

Wait a second.

Hello, Jiaxin.

What?

Jianing, I read the files

you translated for me last time.

I'll start preparing for studying abroad

at your place.

You lied to me last time.

I mean...

Have you asked for aunt's and dad's advice?

I make decisions for my own youth.

It's best if they agree.

If they don't, I'll run away on my own.

I'll start preparing for studying abroad

Jiaxin.

You mustn't be so reckless with studying abroad.

Don't rush.

I'll take care of matters back home,

you just need to pick me up then.

I can't pick you up.

Why?

Because

I'm not in town.

Then where are you?

I...

No matter where you're,

I'll notify you in advance by then.

Just come and pick me up.

Wait for me. Bye.

Jiaxin.

You're really bad at telling lies.

Forget it.

Do you need my help?

No.

I thought you already see me as your friend.

Seems like I flattered myself.

It's late. The temperature is dropping.

Be careful not to catch a cold.

Let's go.

I ate something that upset my stomach tonight.

I'm not feeling well.

Are you all right?

Here it comes.

Here it comes.

Are you okay?

I brought you medicine.

Didn't you say you feel unwell?

Thanks.

You're fine?

Of course, I am.

I guess there must be

something wrong with the shrimps we ate tonight.

You haven't adapted to the local climate?

Hurry and lie down.

I'm fine. Go home.

No. Your situation is so bad.

I... I'll stay with you for a while.

Lie down. Lie down and take some sleep.

Come. Lie down over here.

Come.

Tell me if you feel unwell.

Jiaxin.

I mean...

Have you asked for aunt's and dad's advice?

I make decisions for my own youth.

It's best if they agree.

If they don't, I'll run away on my own.

I can't pick you up.

Why?

Because

I'm not in town.

So the girl who called her last night

is her sister.

If she's her biological sister,

why didn't she tell her

she has already returned from abroad?

Wake up.

You're awake.

How do you feel?

I'm feeling better.

You took care of me last night.

Thank you, Qiu Jianing.

You're welcome.

It's great that you're fine now.

I'll go then.

Let me walk you back.

No need. Get some good rest.

Jianing.

Print two copies

of all the PDF files

in this U disk.

Print one copy for me and one for yourself.

The two Word documents inside

are the updated key papers

I asked Wei to sort out.

When you've found the original papers,

read those carefully and proofread once.

It's needed for the presentation next Monday.

Okay.

Organize it, print it out, and send it to me

before you get off work tomorrow.

Okay?

Then I'll leave now.

Go ahead.

Wei.

I asked you to compile the recent result reports.

How is it going?

Miss Su,

this experiment...

Didn't you tell me there was a breakthrough last weekend?

No.

Have you brought all the files?

Yes.

How many copies do we need?

15 copies. A copy for each person.

Jianing.

You're using the copier?

You need to print files too?

It's fine. Don't rush. Take your time.

This is the experiment report

Miss Su prepared for next week?

Miss Su is incredible.

We have no success with the experiment no matter what we do.

And she has it done.

I look forward to the experiment plan

Miss Su designs for the next stage.

Shut up.

Mr. Sun has been working hard for so long without any success.

They've done it so easily.

There must be something fishy.

Have you finished?

Your team doesn't own this printer.

Can you hurry up? Will you ever stop?

Why don't you print first?

I may take a while.

The report is so long?

No, thanks.

Xiaoxiao is just like that.

Don't take it personal.

She's worried for Mr. Sun.

It's fine.

But it has been so long.

Mr. Sun still hasn't had ideal results?

So we're curious about the plan

Miss Su designs for the next stage.

But Mr. Sun is Mr. Wang's direct student.

And now he's having less progress.

He's certainly reluctant to ask for suggestions.

Let's wait for Mr. Wang to give out orders.

Why wait for Mr. Wang?

Haven't you found out?

In this project team,

Miss Su and Mr. Sun have equal powers.

If Mr. Sun asks Miss Su for experimental scheme,

then he voluntarily admits defeat.

But after Miss Su submits her report

to the headquarters and get passed,

Mr. Sun still has to listen to Miss Su.

That's different.

In one case, he admits his failure.

In another case, it's an administrative order.

That's different.

Mr. Sun asked us to have a meeting.

I'll go first.

Take your time.

Bye-bye.

Cells see no significant changes.

To sum up,

we chose ten candidate cells as test subjects

from the second batch.

But none of those cells

showed phenotypic changes.

This attempt failed.

No qualified candidate molecule has been found.

Keep testing.

Okay.

Mr. Sun.

I have a suggestion.

Go ahead.

Next week, on Miss Su's weekly meeting,

she'll submit a report for this new stage.

Only a few days are left.

Why don't we

stop our experiment for now?

People are destined to die.

Why don't you stop eating

from now on?

Mr. Sun,

Xiaoshan only wants what's good for us.

Socidart.

One of the top 5 bestseller anticancer drugs over the past three years.

During its development period,

all researchers were disappointed again and again.

After years of pre-screening,

they finally picked Socidart

out of millions of candidates.

How many times have you failed?

You already can't handle it?

Lei.

Don't worry.

I've observed Su Qian's astrolabe.

She'll have really bad luck recently.

Lei.

I dreamed about our experiment's success.

Okay. That's enough.

I don't want to listen to your nonsense.

Hurry and get back to your work.

Yes.

Then... then we'll go now.

I've printed out the report you asked me to.

Put it over there.

What?

When I was proofreading the report,

I found some issues.

If you're free,

I wish to report to you.

Okay.

Come.

Tell me.

On this report's page 8,

11, 15, and 17

are the results of four repetitive tests

on a batch of substance's cell screening.

After the first two medicine applications,

no phenotypic change can be observed.

But after the last two medicine applications,

substance No.119 and No.124

vary significantly in terms of cell growth curve.

So...

What's the problem with that?

I'm doing the third test.

After three repetitions,

the problem will be easy to observe.

I'm talking about that.

The first two and the later two applications

used the same batch of medicine,

the same batch of cells,

and the same batch of experimental sources.

Without doing

any experimental upgrade,

we had completely different results.

In this process,

I...

You've never had errors when doing experiments?

The previous two tests were obviously caused by

errors during experiments or data processing.

Oh!

I heard Xiaoding was having her period

during the first two experiments.

She always has severe period pain.

Her making errors is natural...

Zheng Wei.

How can you speak

so unprofessionally?

Go out first.

Jianing, go ahead.

Miss Su.

I have no other intentions.

I just want to ask

if there are any other unmentioned changes

in the experimental conditions.

Because we'll submit this next Monday.

I feel this report isn't

rigorous enough.

You asked me to proofread it.

That's why I report my thoughts

to you.

Jianing.

Well done.

For us researchers, we need to have such a spirit.

I only wish I haven't caused you any trouble.

Then the follow-up verification?

I'll see what I can do about that.

Then I'll leave now.

Why is Qiu Jianing such a troublemaker?

I just asked her to print files.

Who would expect her

to read a lengthy report carefully?

Why is she... ?

You know she's a troublemaker.

Why did you make things worse?

How many times have I told you?

Don't display every thought on your face.

You overacted over her reasonable doubt.

You're exposing

what we did behind everyone's back yourself.

Miss Su, I'm sorry.

I won't do this next time.

There won't be a next time.

Since Qiu Jianing has already found out,

we must be more careful than before.

Do you know Qiu Jianing's background?

I heard Chunran gossip about it before.

She went to study abroad since she was little.

She used to be a researcher

in an overseas lab.

Why did she come back?

I don't know that.

Then hurry and look into it.

I'll do it right now.

Who has connections in A City?

Bye-bye.

Bye-bye.

Hurry and go.

Jianing, bye.

Who don't you get off work?

What?

Say nothing if you don't want to.

There's something

that's pretty odd.

I read the experiment report.

Many parts were written ambiguously.

Many condition details were omitted.

Have you reported to Miss Su?

Miss Su attaches great importance to it.

But Zheng Wei's attitude is weird.

Sun Lei and Su Qian do similar projects.

Besides, Sun Lei started the project earlier than Su Qian.

But Su Qian has progress while Sun Lei doesn't.

Is it because she's lucky? Or are there other reasons?

Both teams carried out the basic experiment methods

according to company procedures.

Why can't Mr. Sun have any success?

Right.

This is weird.

Do you have time after work?

What?

Let me take you to dinner.

I feel flattered.

If it's on me,

at least, we don't have to

eat living creatures.

How about this one?

Okay.

Let's go.

Can we have this?

Okay.

Can we have this?

Okay.

And can we have this as well?

Okay.

This. This.

Please wait for a while.

What are you doing?

What?

Where are you going?

You.

What?

Why are you hiding?

What's wrong, Qiu Jianing?

Why are you running around?

What did you see?

What are you doing?

Stop it. Stop it.

Our seats will be occupied later.

Come.

So she's your younger sister.

Now you've come back.

Why not tell your family?

Qiu Jianing.

Sharing happiness makes it increase twofold.

Sharing pain makes it reduce twofold.

You think too much, Zhou Xiaoshan.

There's nothing extraordinary.

I'm just too lazy to tell them

or explain it.

You're trying to escape.

You can approach it however you want.

Anyway, I won't spend time on

unimportant matters like this.

This smells good.

Wait.

What are you doing?

Poison test.

Come. Master. Smile.

Three. Two. One.

Can I eat now?

Go ahead.

Stop playing your phone. Hurry and eat.

You're the one who asked to come here.

Hurry and like my WeChat moment post.

I need to collect 28 likes.

So I can get a dessert for free.

Do I look like I have time now? No!

I think it's really not worth it.

I waited in line for ages.

What's the point?

It makes no difference if we eat elsewhere.

That's why I said you're old-fashioned.

An internet-famous restaurant isn't a place for you to dine out.

If you like internet-famous things so much,

why don't you be an internet celebrity yourself?

Sorry. I don't have a cheesy internet celebrity face.

My face is too natural.

Sorry.

What?

Fine. Thanks for the lesson. Okay?

You have an older sister?

A sister by blood.

Look at your clumsy hands.

I knew you're not the child

in the one-child policy quota.

Considering your age,

your dad and mom weren't supposed to have a second child, right?

The fine must be huge.

I'm the child of their love.

Do you get it?

How dare you say that?

My sister and I were born by the same father but different mothers.

Is it what I think it is?

Sorry.

It isn't what you think it is.

My sister's mom broke up with my dad.

After many years,

my dad and my mom got together.

That's why I'm years younger than my sister.

What does

your sister do?

I'm afraid you'll be shocked!

Are you sure you want to know?

Tell me.

Sit tight.

A beautiful female

scientist.

How's it?

What did that response mean?

Why did you react like this?

You should give an expression

of extreme admiration and shock.

You should show how you envy me

and your awe for my sister.

Considering the way you talk,

you make a pass sound like a full score.

That's what happened to this restaurant.

You said your sister is a beautiful female scientist.

This can only be partly true.

Your sister must be

an ordinary person who looks average.

And she rinses test tubes in labs.

Your laughter sounds like pig grunts.

You don't trust me?

Fine. I'll bring my sister over one day.

You can look at her carefully.

No. No. No.

I'm afraid. I'm afraid she might scare me.

I'll definitely bring her over for you to take a look.

No. Absolutely no.

I don't want to meet your sister.

I must bring her over.

I really don't want to meet your sister.

- I really should. - No. No. No.

Eat.

Eat.

Miss Su,

I just had dinner with my friends.

Guess what I found out.

What did you find out?

I have a friend

who went to A City after graduation.

She happened to be connected with Qiu Jianing's life circle.

She said Qiu Jianing was in Harry Lab.

She was even in an important position.

I was wondering

why she ended up in a small lab like ours.

Guess what?

She was expelled because of academic misconduct.

She was expelled?

Look.

Expulsion announcement.

Academic misconduct.

If I'm not mistaken,

Harry is one of the top scholars in biology

from Europe.

Even his lab issued such an announcement.

What unforgivable mistakes

did Qiu Jianing make?

When a researcher makes mistakes,

it must be falsified results.

In this case,

this matter is easy to take care of.

Jianing.

how long have you been in the lab?

Half a month.

Then have you understood

the lab's situation?

I don't quite understand you.

Let me tell you this.

The headquarter really values PLAN O.

They have prepared 2 billion in fund.

But this money hasn't arrived

because of our experiment progress.

Only by letting the headquarter see

our substantial progress,

will they be willing to allocate the money.

So, Miss Su's report is extremely vital.

The report has flaws.

We can fix the flaws.

The key is to make sure the money gets allocated first.

Make sure the company values us.

If it keeps dragging on,

do you think the company will still have patience?

Jianing.

you're lucky that

you were assigned to Miss Su's team the moment you came here.

When Miss Su becomes project manager,

you'll share the reward too.

Right?

I'll get back to work now.

You can't go inside.

It means...

I want to report to you.

Mr. Wang.

She insisted on breaking in. I couldn't stop her.

Okay. Leave the room.

Yes.

Go ahead.

On this report's page 8,

11, 15, and 17

are the results for four repetitive tests

of a batch of substance's cell screening.

After the first two medicine applications,

no phenotypic change can be observed.

But after the last two medicine applications,

substance No.119 and No.124

vary significantly in terms of cell growth curve.

I think this report isn't rigorous enough.

It needs to be verified.

Mr. Wang.

I see.

Is there anything else?

Youngsters nowadays

really can't let go of any chance.

Mr. Wang.

Jianing has indeed mentioned this

to me privately.

But I didn't expect her to

come directly to you without my approval.

What Jianing did was indeed reckless.

But I hope you can value

the problems she raised.

You need to show it in your report.

I just reported to you.

We preliminarily concluded it's because of the researcher's inadequate health.

Of course.

We need follow-up experiments to back that up.

You can't be more rigorous.

Since we're talking about Qiu Jianing,

I don't know if you're aware of one thing.

Go ahead.

It's about her academic history.

You want to talk about

her being expelled from Harry Lab?

You know that?

Then why... ?

I have my plans.

Though I don't know your plan,

if a researcher is expelled from a lab,

and considering her behavior since she joined here,

I think we must be cautious.

Su Qian,

do you know

why I tried so hard

to employ you from your previous lab?

Mr. Wang, you gave me the chance.

About academic study and research,

breaking the barriers is most important.

Sun Lei has been working with me since undergraduate years.

His work

has formed a set pattern.

Zhang Yu,

Li Chunran,

even Xiaoxiao,

have somehow been

included into my theoretical system.

I recruited you because I wish

you can add fresh blood,

bring new research ideas.

And it proves that

you don't disappoint.

It's because Mr. Wang taught me well.

You can't build anything without breaking something.

This is what I believe in.

Whether Jianing's case is real or not,

it's now history.

Who can live a life

without making any mistakes?

Yes. You're right.

You and I should be the only people

who know about her case.

A researcher's reputation

is more important than anything.

Have you remembered that?

Yes, I have.

Qiu Jianing dares to disregard our authority and tell on us.

Fortunately, you told Mr. Wang in advance.

Otherwise, we'll...

Seems that we have a strong opponent this time.

Miss Su,

have you told Mr. Wang

the truth about her expulsion?

I told him.

But Mr. Wang's attitude toward her is ambiguous.

Ambiguous?

I thought she's just a silly overseas returnee

who doesn't know the ways of the world.

Seems that I underestimated her.

Since Mr. Wang favors her,

let's find a way to make her resign herself.

Master.

How rare! You're not late today.

Master, have you read the patients' cases I organized for you yesterday?

I sent those to your computer. Have you seen those?

I just read those.

You did pretty good this time.

Listen.

The hospital really needs talents now.

If you keep doing well like this,

when your internship is over,

you can be a permanent employee.

Master, you may be mistaken.

Actually I've been thinking

if I was too strict with you.

How do you think?

It's nothing.

It won't happen again anyway.

You said I'm mistaken?

Why?

Master, I can promise

I won't cause you any troubles during my internship.

But you have to promise me one thing.

Qiu Jiaxin, good for you.

You know how to threaten me.

I'm serious.

Master, I need your help with one thing.

What? Tell me.

When my internship is over,

write a recommendation letter for me.

A recommendation letter.

I want to study abroad.

Good. Good.

Then what?

No.

Master.

Fine. I get it.

I'll do it. I will.

Go back to your work.

Master, you're the best.

Wei.

What will we have for lunch?

A Luckin Coffee just opened nearby.

Let's order takeout for lunch.

It's my treat.

Great. Thanks, Wei.

What do you want?

Luckin Coffee.

I want a Mocha.

And a Hawaii pineapple ham roll.

And a blueberry muffin.

And...

Stop there.

Get me a Latte.

You has a pig-like appetite.

Which item from Luckin is good?

Listen, everything is good.

Jianing, take a look. What do you want?

Okay.

Thank you.

How much is this?

I'll pay you.

It's fine. It's my treat.

Thank you.

Wei, thank you for the treat.

It's fine.

Thanks, Wei.

- Has everyone ordered? - Thanks, boss.

Thank you.

Stop worrying about others.

Think about yourself.

When will you find a partner?

The takeout has arrived.

- Thanks. Thanks. - Take your food faster.

Eat a bit faster.

We'll have a meeting later.

Got it.

This is mine.

Muffin. It's yours.

My latte.

Whose muffin is this?

- It's mine. - Latte.

Thanks.

And mine.

My latte.

Where's mine, Wei?

Thanks, Wei.

This is mine.

You can trade.

- Chocolate scone. - This is mine.

What did you order?

Jianing, what did you order?

Americano. Ham and cheese croissant.

Americano. Ham.

Do you have it?

Ham and cheese.

No. It's not here.

It's empty.

Maybe the seller missed these items.

How about this?

I'll call the seller now.

I'll ask them to send it hurriedly.

But we'll have the meeting soon.

I guess you won't have enough time to eat it.

But what I ordered isn't on the receipt.

How come?

Maybe you didn't place the order successfully?

I did put it in the cart.

Jianing, have my blueberry muffin.

Chunran, you'll starve in the afternoon.

It's fine. I'll just eat something.

Is yours delicious?

Have a bite.

Wei, do you want a bite?

What is this?

Cranberry scone.

It has big cranberry pieces.

Hurry.

Check out my blueberries.

You offended Miss Su?

Zheng Wei didn't order for you on purpose.

You must have offended Miss Su.

Childish.

But it works, doesn't it?

It may work on the others.

It won't work on me.

Only the weak people seek companionship.

I don't need to.

You sit here alone,

eating a salad.

Admit it.

I'm here to do experiments.

I'm not here to share lunch bills with them.

If they want to isolate me,

go ahead.

Wei, did you just accidentally

delete Jianing's order?

What you did was so obvious.

I just don't want to eat with her.

Jianing has low EQ.

But she's a nice person.

Chunran.

You're deceived by her look.

She is so scheming.

How? How?

Do you know her background?

Isn't she

from Harry Lab?

There are wonderful research resources overseas.

Why did she come back?

Her parents asked her to.

I read her files.

She seems to be a local.

But she has applied for a dorm room.

Then she had a sad breakup abroad.

She came back to treat her wounded heart.

What a wild guess!

This is unfounded.

Gossip is what you do every day.

You're too young to understand it.

Do you know this?

She was expelled from an overseas lab.

- Really? - It's true.

- Why? - It can't be real.

That lab has issued an announcement.

Academic misconduct.

Really?

Academic misconduct.

Academic misconduct.

Expelling a person because of academic misconduct

will end this researcher's career.

Right!

Mr. Wang values a person's integrity the most.

How can she work at our place

when she just got expelled by an overseas lab?

There must be some misunderstanding.

You know it.

If a woman is pretty, she won't be too unfortunate.

Zhuzhu, do you mean you'll be lucky too?

Right?

I'm not bad.

Stop flattering yourself.

Qiu Jianing.

Qiu Jianing.

Don't be reckless.

I'll prove that I'm not a weak person.

She can't be such a person.

Miss Qiu.

Bye.

If a woman is pretty,

she won't be too unfortunate.

Are you talking about me?

You heard it wrongly.

Thank you for your approval.

I won't let you down.

I need to go to the restroom.

Xiaoxiao. Tong Mo. Come with me.

Come.

Let's go.

What do we have for dinner?

Come.

How about Sichuan food?

Okay.

Let's go.

Xiaoshan, let me give you a lift?

You should go first. I'm busy.

Bye-bye.

- Xiaoshan, you're not leaving? - Bye-bye.

Bye-bye.

Bye-bye, Jianing.

Bye-bye.

I now believe that

you're not a weak person.

Why did you get expelled?

You've heard it, haven't you?

Academic misconduct.

If I believe whatever I hear,

I can't live to this day.

You don't believe it.

I don't.

Why?

Because you're proud.

So what?

What a proud of person fears most

is letting himself down.

You're not a person like that.

Professor Harry stole the first draft of my paper.

And he published it without my permission.

When I went to confront him, I got expelled.

The article on Cure

was written by you?

Why don't you explain this

to the colleagues today?

It's not necessary.

I don't need their understanding or trust.

So mine

is unnecessary to you as well?

How about you?

Why did you come back from abroad and join PLAN O?
